In this episode of Fresh Bites on The Bitey End of the Dog, I chat with Jessie Kasper who has an extensive background in all aspects of the rescue world. A very common issue we can face is making decisions about dogs in a rescue or shelter system that have a history of aggression. Difficult conversations are likely needed when considering the potential outcomes for dogs that do have such a history, and Jessie unpacks many of those conversations in this insightful episode. For additional resources on helping dogs with aggression, visit:https://aggressivedog.comIf you want to take your knowledge and skills for helping dogs with aggression to the next level, check out the Aggression in Dogs Master Course and get a FREE preview here:https://aggressivedog.thinkific.com/courses/aggression-in-dogsDon't miss out on the third annual Aggression in Dogs Conference 9/30-10/2/22:https://aggressivedog.com/conference/About Jessie:Jessie Kasper is the Office Coordinator for a training company called I Got This Sit, LLC in Elgin, IL, which is just outside the Chicagoland area. Their focus is on humane training techniques while specializing in positive reinforcment, creating good foundation skills and behavior modification. They offer drop-off programs such as Day Training and Live-In and Learn, as well as group classes for reactivity. Jessie is also pursuing a formal education to help people and their companions thrive together with private, in-home training. Jessie grew up around Dobermans and has a passion for power breeds and having responsible, realistic goals for the breed in front of you. Jessie volunteered with Illinois Doberman Rescue Plus for nearly 10 years, eventually sitting on the Board of Directors where she was introduced to (and fell in love with) positive reinforcement training. Jessie helped hundreds of dogs during her time in rescue and focused most heavily on behavioral fostering and medical cases such as severe skin infections, heartworm recovery, surgery rehabilitation, and cruelty cases. She was responsible for new foster training, processing adoption applications, helping review owner and shelter intakes, managing social media and appearing on WGN News. All this has helped Jessie to bring a unique and empathetic perspective on the needs of the average pet owner. She realizes there are no one-size-fits-all solutions in dog training and understands the challenges of integrating a new dog into your home safely. Educating the public on safe and responsible pet ownership - especially when children are involved - has always been an important topic for her. Support the show

“People said I should be banned from posting photos of myself because I'm too ugly. So, I'd just like to commemorate the occasion with these 3 selfies.” Melissa Blake Writer and disabilities activist The Artwork: Blake's portrait in the Fearless Portrait project consists of an ink drawing of her, based on one of the selfies she defiantly posted, “to commemorate the occasion.” I've drawn her on a map of her hometown, DeKalb, Illinois. The Story: After writing an op-ed on CNN.com in August 2019, Melissa Blake discovered 100s of comments mocking her appearance. While hurtful, Blake was accustomed to the abuse and usually took it in stride. But something was different this time. Reflecting on the episode, she writes, “As a woman writer with a genetic bone and muscular disorder, I'm used to being called names like ‘blobfish' and ‘whale,' but there was one comment I just couldn't shake. Someone said that I should be banned from posting photos of myself because I'm too ugly. The more I thought about it, the more I knew I wanted to respond in some way. Not directly to the person, but as a general statement.” Blake settled on a set of selfies on Twitter as a suitable response, posting: “People said I should be banned from posting photos of myself because I'm too ugly. So, I'd just like to commemorate the occasion with these 3 selfies.” The defiant tweet quickly went viral and her Twitter follower count rocketed up from under 8,000 to over 100k. Buoyed by the army of supporters, Blake began posting a selfie everyday under the hashtag #MyBestSelfie. Weeks went by. Then months. More than a year later, Blake continues to post her “best selfie” every day, saying “I post selfies to unapologetically take up space and demand to be seen as a disabled woman.” People around the world have joined the movement, posting their own photos. Her daily discipline has inspired other disabled people and educated legions of enabled people. More importantly, Blake found a new level of personal confidence: “With each selfie, I felt more comfortable in my own body and discovered a freedom I'd never really felt before as a disabled woman,” she says. Background on Blake: Born on August 4, 1981 in DeKalb, Illinois, Blake has Freeman-Sheldon Syndrome, a rare bone and muscle disorder that primarily affects the face, hands, and feet. The disorder gives people a distinctive facial appearance. She's had nearly 30 operations, including surgeries on her knees, hands, hips, and spine. While she uses a wheelchair to maneuver the physical world, she's under no such limitations online and she's become a force for positivity on the internet. Blake is a writer and her work has appeared in publications as diverse as Glamour and The New York Times, and her personal blog, So About What I Said. P.J. McGuire - as a child, P.J. McGuire dreamed of creating new products and selling them on television, much like the home shopping shows she watched while spending time with her grandmother. In 2016, she made that dream come true when she appeared on the Home Shopping Network (HSN) as a finalist for the HSN/Good Housekeeping “American Dreams” contest. She introduced her invention, the Wrapperoo®, a unique all-in-one T-Shirt Hair Towel & Protective Styling Cape, selling out the product on the first show. HSN customers loved the Wrapperoo so much that PJ was invited back to appear on the network a second time. Before she came to realize her entrepreneurial dream, P.J., a native of Lima, Ohio who holds a degree in biological sciences from Ohio University, worked in the corporate sector in sales and management roles. In 2006, she founded her first independent business venture, Modet Inc., a professional development, business etiquette, and international protocol consulting firm. P.J. also developed the P-to-P Success Skills training program, which she taught to employees at Procter & Gamble, The Boston Consulting Group, Kraft Foods, Marriott, and Miller Coors, along with students from The University of Chicago Booth School of Business, as well as numerous small businesses and individuals. Fueled by her annoyance with the mess of her hair and beauty routine – and the final straw being the morning she ruined her favorite silk blouse with hair product – P.J. created the Wrapperoo in 2015 by cutting a towel and gluing on some Velcro. After tinkering with her idea for a single product that would be useful for multiple hair, skincare, makeup, and other grooming tasks, she secured a patent on her invention in 2017. Today, the Wrapperoo is a favorite among a diverse customer base that includes natural hair and curly hair advocates, hair and beauty digital influencers, professional makeup artists, hair stylists, barbers, and DIYers. P.J. and her products have been featured on Good Housekeeping, ABC’s Good Morning America, MSN.com, Entrepreneur, Forbes.com, and WGN News, among others. After initially sourcing materials in China and beginning the process of moving her manufacturing operation there, changes to international trade agreements negatively impacted P.J.’s ability to create product, forcing her to rethink her entire supply chain in 2018. While turning to alternative materials sourcing and resuming production in Chicago with a small home-based sewing team, the COVID-19 global pandemic hit, slamming micro businesses like Wrapperoo especially hard. Pivoting once again, in March 2020 P.J. started home-sewing and donating protective face masks, using leftover Wrapperoo fabric and N99 filters she had on hand. She was spurred to action after hearing the anguished stories of her healthcare professional friends treating COVID-10 patients in Chicago-area hospitals. To meet soaring demand for both donated and for-sale masks, P.J. launched a “buy one, give one” sale that has generated donations of more than 1,000 high-quality, multifunctional, reusable masks to medical workers in the Chicago region.
