Sunak overleeft stemming over Rwanda-plan

It's back to school and detention for you! Jemma and Marina open on the latest batshittery from Britain's strictest headteacher who chose the most bizarre hill of all to die on: the latest Marks & Spencer Christmas advert.  And thank goodness she did, because your reactions were a joy, which coincidentally is what headteacher Kathrin Birbilsingh appears to be in short supply of.  Then it's onto the main event: the man who is currently f*cking up Twitter sat down with the man who is currently f*cking up the UK. Sunak interviewed Musk - or rather, Sunak belly-rubbed Musk, in an attempt to secure himself a new job at Musk Towers once the British people boot him out of office. It was a joy to behold. Things get very profound and thought-provoking with some words from philosopher, Noam Chomsky, before the ladies turn to the Brexit latest. Spoiler: it's grim.  And if you thought Gordon Ramsey was lacking in self-awareness, then brace yourself for Osborne and Balls as they regale you with a heartwarming tale that saw the Queen's favorite bagpipe schools saved from brutal austerity cuts, but f*ck everyone else who didn't happen to have a queen advocating for them.  Dorries and the disgraced daughter of Captain Tom Moore are the subject of the underrated tweets, before a superb pudding of Colin from Portsmouth - served up by the super talented Exploding Heads.  Thank you for sharing and do tweet us @MarinaPurkiss @jemmaforte @TheTrawlPodcast Patreon https://patreon.com/TheTrawlPodcast Learn more about your ad choices. If you could have a superpower, what would it be? Invisibility, or maybe the ability to fly? Well, in this week's episode, we're speaking to a real-life superhero called Sebbie Hall, whose superpower is perhaps the greatest of all - his superpower is kindness.Sebbie first discovered his superpower during the pandemic, whilst we were all in lockdown. He had told his mum that there was a boy in his school who was at risk of social isolation, as he hadn't got an iPad or laptop to talk to his classmates on or to do schoolwork with while confined to the house. Sebbie wanted to help his classmate, and was even prepared to give him his own iPad! Instead, they came up with the idea of raising money for charity, to help Sebbie's classmate as well as the wider community.Inspired by Captain Tom Moore's 100 laps of his garden ahead of his 100th birthday, Sebbie decided that he wanted to complete 100 acts of kindness in 10 days to raise £1,000. Sebbie's acts of kindness hugely benefitted the local community during the pandemic and spread happiness! Whether by popping notes through neighbours' doors or posting letters for people because they didn't want to leave their homes, Sebbie's simple but selfless acts brightened up hundreds of people's days! But Sebbie didn't stop there... he wanted to make more people smile up and down the country, and eventually the smiles spread around the globe! Sebbie was awarded a World Compassion Award along with $10,000. This cash award enabled the family to set up The Sebbie Hall Kindness Foundation in 2022. The foundation has the aim of helping other young people who are disadvantaged due to disability.Combatting loneliness, spreading kindness, making people feel happy inside and making a difference, The Sebbie Hall Kindness Foundation is a huge player in fighting the social exclusion of people with learning difficulties and enables them to lead fulfilled lives, always keeping kindness at the forefront. Cup only half full? My guest on today's episode is double Paralympic gold medalist archer Danielle Brown.   After becoming disabled as a teenager, Danielle realised that even in adversity we have a choice. Choose to let the things outside your control defeat you, or choose to control your response to it.   Taking up archery on her fifteenth birthday, Danielle made the Great Britain team three years later, jumping straight in as world number 1. She hung onto that position for her entire career. Danielle is a five time World Champion and 2 time Paralympic gold medallist, winning gold in Beijing 2008 and retaining her title on home soil in London 2012. She also became the first disabled person to represent England as an able-bodied competitor at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, where she won gold.   Danielle was awarded MBE in 2013 and now works as a keynote speaker and mentor. She specialises in helping others unlock their potential, break through barriers and achieve more. Always wanting to put something back, she is very passionate about helping young people achieve all that they are capable of and develop strong foundations for success.   I got to know Danielle through her work as a speaker and she has such an amazingly positive mindset I knew she'd be a brilliant guest and I certainly wasn't disappointed.   In today's interview we talk about the book and some of the incredible stories she shares in it, as well as her mission to educate boys and girls, men and women about the importance of inclusion.   I ask her about archery, and what kept her going after back for more her first experience despite not being a 'natural'. Oh, and we clarified that the middle bit isn't actually called the bullseye as I originally thought!   This conversation is really all about resilience and mindset, put into practice in the most stunning of ways.   Danielle's published works include: Be Your Best Self: Life Skills For Unstoppable Kids Run Like A Girl: 50 Extraordinary and Inspiring Sportswomen One Hundred Reasons To Hope, curated with Captain Tom Moore's family's support   You can find out more about Danielle and her work here: https://www.daniellebrown.co.uk https://www.linkedin.com/in/danielle-brown-mbe https://www.instagram.com/daniellebrownmbe  https://twitter.com/danibrownmbe

Having dealt with the size of dinners eaten by morbidly obese fans of austerity, we enter a fascinating discussion on how we go about titling each episode.  Can we take on Joe Rogan's massive podcasting destroyer with our nimble speedboat?  Pete gets his nonecdote in early this week, with a whimsical tale of a dessert given to him by a stranger from the boot of her Vauxhal Corsa. We also hear a bit about dating outdoors in subzero temperatures.  Leigh gives us a long-overdue review of the 1993 film Demolition Man, before telling us about his Crème brûlée barometer (not a euphemism apparently).  There's a fairly dull bit on how the plural works in the English language, luckily cut short by Leigh's daughter walking in on the recording. On Leigh's return, we get into a discussion about billionaire fanbois, Hobbes in space, our possible Star Trek or The Expanse future, and Leigh's big idea of levelling Idaho to make way for solar panels.  We finish off by sending off Captain Tom Moore with a bit of good ol' fashioned southern hospitality.  Cover art: @aaronsage001 Find Pete on Twitter: @kennedy121 & Instagram @feistyflaneur Maybe look Leigh up if nowt else on: @LeighHBennett

99 Years Old. Served his country in the 2nd world war and won medals for his heroic achievement. Worked as a sales manager before finally retiring in 1987. Beat skin cancer and several hip-related surgeries. Raced and won numerous motorcycle contests and even contested in T.V shows. You might think that Captain Tom Moore would be content with his long list of life achievements to retire from any kind of service and take it easy. But oh no, Captain Tom Moore has recently broken a long list of records by raising over 33 Million Pounds in a donation to support the NHS in the current Covid-19 pandemic. On 6th April 2020, Captain Tom, aged 99 began taking walk laps with the goal of raising 1,000 pounds by his 100th birthday. Twenty four days later on his 100th birthday, Captain Tom had inspired over 1.5 million individual donations, with the total number of donations amassing to over 32.79 Million pounds. Captain Tom's Bio Born at Keighley, in the West Riding of Yorkshire, on 30th April 2020 Captain Tom served in the British army during the 2nd world war from 1940 to 1945. Captain Tom has been awarded four medals for his war service during the war. After leaving the army, he worked as a sales manager for a roofing company in Yorkshire, and later as a managing director of a Fens-based company manufacturing concrete, “Cawood Concrete Products Ltd”, which was later renamed “March Concrete Products Ltd”, after he led a management buyout in 1983. The company was sold to ARC in 1987, and for 64 years he organized the DWR annual reunion. Breaking records with his Music Career. To Mark Captain Tom's 100th Lap, singer Michael Ball sang "You'll Never Walk Alone" for him live on a BBC Broadcast. The performance was made into a digital single featuring the NHS Voices of Care Choir, and Moore's spoken words. The song was released on 17 April, with all proceeds going to NHS Charities. 7 days later the song went straight to number one on the weekly UK singles chart. Making Captain Tom the oldest person to achieve this feat. Moore's story of love and resilience has inspired similar charity walks by several other individuals in the U.K. And by doing so, proved that age is just a number. You're never too old to craft that new life you've always dreamed of. And that above all, there's always a ray of hope and sunshine even in the darkest of days. (0:00) Show Open Here's What to Do When You Run Into Someone Who Isn't Social Distancing With stay-at-home orders relaxing and more and more places starting to re-open, you're bound to run into people who aren't taking the social distancing guidelines as seriously as they should.  Here are four tips on how to handle it . . . Speak up.  Especially if you're in a higher-risk group for the virus.  If you're not able to move out of the way to avoid the person, try asking them to take a few steps back . . . and mention that it's because you'd like BOTH of you to stay safe. Don't get angry.  Shouting at someone isn't going to get them to change their behavior.  So if you DO speak up, keep it cool and respectful. Don't assume you know why someone isn't following the guidelines.  Give the person the benefit of the doubt, especially since the guidance on social distancing and face masks has changed over time. And some people aren't able to wear face masks for legitimate health reasons, like if they have breathing problems or are extra sensitive to touch and textures.  Thank people who DO practice good social distancing.  It reinforces their effort and helps YOU have a more positive mindset by focusing on the good instead of the bad. (22:45) KL, Have you ever milked the cucumber? The New Trend Is . . . Milking Cucumbers? Apparently, there's a new trend from TikTok going around where people are MILKING CUCUMBERS. Here's what that means.  You cut the end off of a cucumber, then start rubbing it in a circular motion against the area of the cucumber you just cut it from. And as you do it, white stuff starts coming out of the edges of the cucumber.  Then you brush off that stuff and eat the cucumber . . . and, believe it or not, it TASTES BETTER. Why?  Apparently, that white stuff is an organic compound called cucurbitacin, and it causes the bitterness you sometimes get in cucumber slices.  So by "milking" your cucumber, it can taste fresher and less bitter.  (Buzzfeed) (30:05) Rick Springfield Promoting: his new song and accompanying video  "Wall Will Fall”   ...Digital downloads of “The Wall Will Fall” will be available to purchase Friday, May 8 on Apple iTunes and Amazon Music. We could cut the time it takes to test a vaccine by a few months if 100 people are willing to get the trial version AND be infected with the virus.  So a site called "1 Day Sooner" is letting people sign up.  And over 20 THOUSAND have already applied. A 7-year-old in Wisconsin was planning a lemonade stand before everything shut down.  So she launched a virtual one with coupons, and it's raising TENS OF THOUSANDS of dollars for charity.  Enough to feed over 600 families a week. A guy in Belgium who has access to a crane has been taking it to nursing homes, so people can visit family members at their windows on high floors.  He was driving by a home recently . . . saw a guy yelling up to his mom from the sidewalk . . . and realized he could help. Someone made a site called IsolationCreations.org to celebrate all the creative stuff people have done in lockdown.  Like music and art projects. All next week, Krispy Kreme is congratulating 2020 graduates by giving them free donuts.  If you show up in your cap and gown, or something that says "Class of 2020" on it, you get a dozen donuts free. Captain Tom Moore is a British World War II veteran. He recently raised more than $36 million for the National Health Service by completing laps of his garden with the help of a walker.  Capt. Moore turns one hundred Thursday. In response, well-wishers have sent him more than 125,000 birthday cards. I'm sure Capt. Moore remembers the days when he was spry and youthful. He probably thought as a young soldier that his deployment during World War II was his greatest service to his country. But his commitment decades later to help those in need has made him a global hero.  We can learn a lesson here: God's people never retire.

The goal of this episode is to bring out the better side of Covid-19 and to find the calm from within the chaos. Our guest for today is Rachna Johary, who is a nurse for 20 years at Centra State hospital in Freehold, NJ. Rachna talks to us about how the 'front liners' are coping with the situation physically as well as emotionally. In addition, since this situation has a global impact, I want to present a global perspective of the better side of Covid-19. We have three other contributors, each from different fields of profession and different countries. They are from London, Canada and New Zealand. Each of them spoke to us about the better side of Covid-19 in their countries and surprisingly each of them brought to us a unique perspective of it. Paul Howden from United Kingdom found the better side of the situation in how the citizens of UK are coming together for each other and shared a fascinating example of Captain Tom Moore who is 99 years old and is able to collect 29 million Sterling Pounds for the health care workers. You can read about Captain Tom at this link: http://justgiving.com/fundraising/tomswalkforthenhs. Captain Tom turns 100 this week. Fauzia Hemani Madhani from Canada found the better side of the current situation in a newly developed sense of community, going back to the basics, spending more time with her family and being able to develop skills and do the things that she normally would not have the time to do. Shahina Oberoi from New Zealand found the calm within the chaos from the safety she and her fellow countrymen feel from the transparent, direct, and clear way their Prime Minister Jacinda Arden is handling the crisis. Her narrative was thorough and detailed and kept me wishing that the same was true in USA. It was amazing how each person agreed that Covid-19 is also bringing us some new beautiful beginnings but from where that was coming from was very different for each one. Let us together continue to find the 'calm from within the chaos'. I will return with the 2nd episode of season 2 of 'Sharing Life Lessons' next Wednesday. Now, we're taking all our Series 1 coaching work and putting it together to craft your own version, your own definition of "happy and successful no matter what". We explore the idea of an artisanal approach to developing your definition. First by looking at how marketing has "artisan-washed" so much around us - from cocktail ice and Scotch eggs to coffee and fancy toast! Then, focusing on the essence of the word, we discover how considering our happiness as artisanal supports our self-coaching. We add to this by understanding what it means to have Shokunin Kishitsu for our Happiness and what we can learn from Japanese master woodworkers about purpose, contribution and patience. Lastly, we revisit Powerlessness and cultivating your Inner Power. We apply what we learned in previous episodes about our 3 Inner Choices to our Happiness picture. Coach Julia Seal takes all this, including the discoveries from all 47 past episodes, and combines it into the new free coaching tool - The Happiness Checklist. Use this to sense-check your definition, your coaching goal of Artisanal - Shokunin Happiness and to ensure you've created a robust definition for yourself, one is based on solid research, the world's wisdom and your own life experience, and not one-sided or limited based only on what you're finding difficult or unpleasant in your life right now - a definition that's well worth your while, well worth your precious human life... Captain Tom Moore has made the honours shortlist after an outpouring of support to get him a knighthood, according to reports. The 99-year-old Second World War veteran has raised more than £28 million for the NHS by walking laps of his garden ahead of his 100th birthday next Thursday. However much the Tories are now clapping for our NHS, we must remember that they are fundamentally opposed to public services, and will soon forget their panic and revert to form. There is a revealing article making this point by a former insider now disillusioned with the world view that anything funded by the state (except of course infrastructure that furthers the interests of the rich) is wrong. Additionally, there have been a number of structural changes as well as commitments to increased funding that superficially make it appear as if the strengths of a public national health service are now being acknowledged, together with an implied criticism of much of the reforms of the last near decade.
