Join me as I flash back to my first visit to Tahoe, Carson Valley, and the Bently Ranch. And hear how Joe is taking on the challenge of Estate distilling. In Summer 1983, Max Jones jumped on a strange new contraption called a #mountainbike and went looking for trails to ride around #laketahoe. There wasn't really any singletrack until he discovered an abandoned flume line running high above the east shore of the lake. After a few failed attempts, Max finally uncovered the overgrown track, taking five hours to “ride” only four miles, fighting through brush and hundreds of downed trees. For the rest that summer, Max cleared the trail with nothing more than hand tools and dogged determination. 40 years later, thanks to Max's efforts, the Marlette Flume Trail has become the most scenic trail in the world and a gem of recreation in Lake Tahoe. Max and his wife Patti have built a life and career around the Flume Trail, promoting the Great Flume Race for more than a decade, starting Flume Trail Bikes to shuttle visitors and opening Tunnel Creek Café to feed them at the end of the adventure. This is the story of Max Jones, a Mountain Bike Hall of Fame inductee, the resurrector of the Flume Trail and an early pioneer of ecotourism in Lake Tahoe. 1:40 – PowBot gets a new vanity license plate – MRDRPOW – on his murdered out Crosstrek. 3:45 – Experiencing technical difficulties with our podcast player while interviewing Max Jones.5:20 – Celebrating the 40th anniversary of Max Jones reopening the Marlette Flume Trail. 10:00 – The first “winter storm” on September 1; a Pacific Low coming off the ocean!11:30 – Rose to Toads TAMBA ride is going to get snow Labor Day weekend. 13:20 – SENDY Send of the Week – 11 year anniversary of Joyce Beckering's passing – Tom's mom. For centuries, the Washoe Tribe migrated seasonally between the Carson Valley and Lake Tahoe. Their presence on the land and cultural practices helped mitigate wildfire risk, as well as enhance wildlife and resilience to drought. We interviewed Rhiana Jones, Interim Director of the Washoe Environmental Protection Department, and Washoe Tribal Council member Helen Fillmore. They helped to shed light on how the forced removal of Washoe people and their practices from the land has impacted ecosystems. They also discussed how the MÁYALA WÁTA Restoration Project aims to restore and preserve Meeks Meadow by integrating traditional knowledge and culturally guided burning practices into current land management strategies.

As opposed to the event centered South Lake Tahoe episode, we’ll shift gears a bit this week, because we’re heading to an area rich with old west history. So prepare for some stories, characters, and a much more laid back feel in the high desert of Carson Valley. And when you hear that term desert, don’t let it fool you, this is very fertile land full of ranches, farmlands, incredible scenery, and the Bently Heritage Estate Distillery where I’ll take you around this state-of-the-art soil to bottle eco-system that is unlike any distillery experience I’ve had.

Welcome to the final two episodes of Season One. I’m going to take you along with me to two tourist destinations, one is South Lake Tahoe, which is known as a ski-resort destination, but I visited it during the shoulder season to see what it offered - and next week’s episode is based a destination you may or may have heard of - Carson Valley, which will not only spin you back into the old west, but which will also yield one of the most fascinating distilleries I’ve seen yet... Join me in a theatre of the mind presentation where we'll check out Heavenly Gondola, Epic Discovery, the MS Dixie II, great places for food and whiskey (since I'm gearing up for my new podcast Whiskey Lore) and a few surprises along the way. Think of this as your audio travel blog. And don’t worry about taking notes, I’ll have a full show notes page prepared with links to everything I’ve talked about in the show. So just relax, put on your seat belt and come along for a ride as I discover Nevada.

Two horses died Thursday morning in a freak training accident at Del Mar, track officials confirmed. Mac McBride, director of media for Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, said one of the horses, Carson Valley, was an unraced 3-year-old trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert. The other horse, a 2-year-old named Charge a Bunch, was trained by Carla Gaines. Jockey Assael Espinoza — who was riding Carson Valley — was transported to a local hospital, Del Mar said in a statement. “He's OK, he got lucky,” said Brian Beach, Espinoza's agent. “It's just a mild sprain of the back. He wasn't riding [Thursday], so he will rest up and hopefully be able to ride this weekend.” Story: https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/sports/horse-racing/story/2019-07-18/del-mar-horses-die-freak-training-accident

The Genealogy Gems Podcast with Lisa Louise Cooke - Your Family History Show

Have you thought about telling the story of your personal history? Most of us at some point have, But let's be honest: continuing the genealogical research of our ancestors probably seemed more appealing, and frankly, it's probably easier than sitting down and figuring out how to capture our own story. I've spoken to a lot of genealogists through the years, and I often hear comments like “ah, my story isn't all that interesting or important.” But nothing could be farther from the truth. When we don't tell our own story, we not only take a big risk that the memory of our life will be lost down the generations, but we rob our family and our community of an important piece of THEIR history. Karen Dustman is the author of the book Writing a Memoir, from Stuck to Finished! She's been helping folks capture and record their stories for several years in her community in the Sierra Nevada which spans Central and Eastern California, into Western Nevada. She's known widely there as a local historian, writing on her blog and in the local newspaper about the history of the area.   Karen's Book !   It was Karen's story of the history of not a family, but an old house in the Carson Valley that shed light on the fact that one of its' inhabitants was at risk of being forgotten. And no one wants to be forgotten.  In this episode we're going to explore the life and death of 10 year old Roy Thran. How his story tentatively made its way through the generations of the family in one simple box to the hands of his great grand-niece Krista Jenkins. It was Krista who connected the all-important dots eventually culminating in a museum exhibit that is now telling an important part of the Carson Valley history and touching the lives of its residents. In this episode we travel back to 1925, to a sparsely populated ranching community to hear the story of Roy Thran, and how it's being shared today. My hope is that Roy's story will transform your thinking about sharing your own story. The second Pony Express Station encountered when traveling east from Friday’s Station at the California/Nevada State Line is Van Sickle Station at the bottom of Old Kingsbury Grade in Carson Valley. In 1857, rancher Henry Van Sickle constructed a two-story hotel with a bar, kitchen and a store to cater to the needs of emigrants traveling to California as a rest stop before the climb over the high Sierra Nevada Mountains. When the Pony Express started operation in 1860, it became a station where the riders stopped to change horses. Continue reading →

Taking the Leap of faith! Family of 7 the Manzano family sell it all and take a leap of faith to go sailing! Jack Andrys interviewed Paul Manzano to learn how they did it! Here is what they say:   About We are a family of seven setting out on an incredible adventure to sail around the world and explore our God's amazing creation.  We are from the beautiful Carson Valley in the state of Nevada. So we sold our 5,400 square foot house that we spent years remodeling and gave away 95% of our stuff. We saved some home décor and family mementos and photos. That's about it. We are temporarily leaving our beloved friends and family, and our cat and dog. We can't imagine not coming back home to Nevada.  We are very sad about this but very excited to have the chance to go out and see new places and meet new people. We will be purchasing a sailboat in the Mediterranean Sea, Turkey to be exact. We are so excited to see the boat in person and start making our new home on the water.  How cool is it going to be to take our home wherever we want to go? Our friends and family have been very supportive of our decision and have helped us get to this point in so many ways.  Thank you friends and family! We love you all so much! Terri Jay enjoys a solid reputation as an intuitive, medium and animal communicator. She is also renowned as a medical and veterinary intuitive. She regularly talks to people and pets who have passed in the course of her work, particularly when helping people deal with the loss of a loved one. Along with her work on the “other side,” Terri also works with people who have communication disorders such as autism, Alzheimer's, traumatic brain injuries, people who are comatose, and babies who have just not yet learned to talk. She is adept at remote viewing and sensing and her readings produce amazing results and incredible details. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, she remembers being drawn to horses at an early age. She began riding lessons and by age 16, she was showing horses on a Class A circuit as a junior rider and also taught riding locally. She went on to attend Ohio State University where she studied Animal Science. By the mid1970s, Terri had moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, where she started a free, horseback therapy program for disabled children. In 1985, she moved to Reno to become the first Executive Director of the Nevada Commission for the Preservation of Wild Horses, a position she held until 1990 when she decided once again to offer a horseback therapy program. It was during this time that she discovered her gift for telepathic communication with disabled children that soon grew to include horses and other animals. Terri has always been in front of the media spotlight for her therapeutic riding program, which received local and national coverage. During her stint with the Wild Horse Commission, she was featured in an episode of "Unsolved Mysteries" about the killing of hundreds of wild horses in Nevada. She went on to appear on countless television news shows for her intuitive work, in national and international magazines and newspapers and on the TV series "Texas Justice" as an expert witness. Terri enjoys a full-time career in providing readings by phone and in person and doing workshops around the country. She has also had successful shows at local casinos. She much rather enjoys the area of animal and non-verbal human communication and she specializes in communicating with world class competition horses. Googling Big George

I visit beautiful Lake Tahoe to hang with the mysterious and magnificent Big George, aka Dr. Ra y Sid ney. Ra y was the fifth employee hired at a Silicon Valley startup named Google, which later gained prominence for taking over the world. Today he is Lake Tahoe’s most prominent philanthropist, enthusiast of the epic sport of curling, and master of trickery and gravity-defying stunts on the wake surfboard. Ray has had a wild ride , emanating from a lifelong fascination with mathematics and peak performance in general. He hails from the highest levels of academia, having g raduated from Harvard and then grabbing a Ph.D. from MIT in math) , then headed west to land on the ground floor at Google. H is first workplace was sharing a bedroom in a Palo Alto duplex; later he was the guy in charge of ordering fitness equipmen t for an early corporate campus! He was in charge of database security, and once (unknowingly) blocked the CIA from doing Google searches because they were flaunting the rules! Feeling burnt out from the crazy pace of Silicon Valley startup life, he took a sabbatical of a few months, which is stretching into a few hundred months, most of which have been spent on the water or frozen water with his tremendous passion for athletics. An important takeaway from Ray’s story, especially in today’s era of celebrity worship, wealth obsession, and social media posturing, is that he never intended to strike it rich in the romanticized fable of the dotcom world. Rather, he enjoyed math, and academics, and solving software engineering problems for the pure challenge. In fact, Ray reveals that his plans during sabbatical were to work on some personal math projects! Alas, transitioning to sudden wealth and expanded opportunities have Ray diverted from the singular focus of software engineering to become involved in a dizzying number of causes, programs, and athletic interests. He is a competitive curler who funded Lake Tahoe’s fledgling curling club and travels around North America for camps and competitions. He is widely recognized (or barely recognized, depending on his attire) as Lake Tahoe’s leading philanthropist. He has donated millions to create fabulous athletic facilities around Tahoe and down in Carson Valley, including a new football/track stadium at Douglas High School and a championship running track at the middle school. His seven-figure donation supported free bus service to transport Tahoe casino workers to and from Carson Valley. He was the founding sponsor of Brad Kearns’s kids fitness charity called Running School. He supports a variety of academic causes like giving back to the Hertz Fellowship program that supported his academic journey and the X Prize Foundation. He recently earned an MBA degree from UC Berkeley just for fun! This show will get your reflecting on the beauty of a pure motivation for life goals, the value of a focused, precise mathematical appr oach to peak performance, and the importance of getting over yourself even if you are a heavy hitter. Indeed, George takes none of this stuff too seriously, as evidenced by the nickname he bestowed on his eco-friendly architecturally wondrous home on the lake: Tahizzle —of course a nod to Snoop Dogg , who has yet to visit but has a standing invitation. Cruise on his boat named Jorge Mucho ( como “Big George” in Español ) and you are more likely to get Borat impersonations than Warren Buffet stock tips. One can agree that Ray is living the good life and doing a great job giving back to all whom he encounters, but he also reveals that for all his freedom and folly opportunity, he struggles with overstimulation and a tendency to distraction like the rest of us. Brad and Ray agree to a future show addressing these matters of importance.
