From headlining comedy clubs, to showing-out on television, Dominique is a seasoned face of funny in America. She’s created laughs on stages across the world, including NBC’s Last Comic Standing, HBO’s Def Comedy Jam, Comedy Central’s “The Chappelle Show,” O.W.N’S “Herlarious,” the Adult Swim television shows “Black Jesus” and “Tropical Cop Tales,” and in the film Tyler Perry’s Boo! A Madea Halloween. Her stand-up special “Stop Me When I’m Lying” (2017) is available on Amazon Prime.  After switching careers from postal work to comedy, Dominique quickly gained notoriety for telling it like it is, raw and uncut. In the pre-internet world, Dominique’s fan-base grew quickly and word of her talent drew attention from HBO’s “Def Comedy Jam.” After a strong performance on Def Jam, Dominique moved to New York City to perform amongst the best of the best. Before long, Dominique became a fixture of New York’s comedy scene, performing alongside comics like Chris Rock and Dave Chapelle. During a chance encounter at a small comedy club, Dominique impressed “30 Rock” and “SNL” star Tracy Morgan, who immediately made Dominique the opening act for his “Caroline’s on Broadway” show. Since then, Dominique has wowed audiences all over the world, and is now based in Los Angeles, California.  In addition to stand-up and television, Dominique has drawn laughs from radio audiences across America during a regular segment on the “Tom Joyner Morning Show.” From this platform, Dominique became known as the “people’s champ,” a comedian who speaks for the common man and woman of America. Charla Lauriston is a Los Angeles based writer and producer hailing from New York by way of Boston by way of Haiti. Charla has written for TV, most recently The Last OG on TBS. She appeared on The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail on Comedy Central and co-hosts the Secret Lives of Black Women podcast. What was the one thing holding you back from accepting self-love? Childhood experiences. I don’t think that I had experiences in my childhood that modeled self-love. It took therapy to realize that, I didn’t even put those two things together. It’s very valuable to mediate on your childhood experiences and what tapes we’ve been given, what perspectives of ourselves we’ve been told to have, understanding that the way that people treated you or the ways that they didn’t protect you or love you… it’s not a reflection on you. You have the power to reframe those experiences. You can change the narrative you’ve been given. One person who changed your life for the better? Definitely my husband. I really had a lot of my revelations about self-love being called to love someone. I’m the kind of person who thought that I was such a good lover, I was really good at giving love. It’s impossible to really do that when you don’t love yourself. Those were the kinds of things I was made to face. He’s been my biggest self-love inspiration. What is the best advice you’ve ever received? Somebody told me to keep your eyes on your own paper and I just never forgot it and I repeat it a lot. Share a self-care habit that you practice regularly. I have been trying to do and say how I actually feel. Isn’t it crazy? If I don’t want to go somewhere or do something, in the past I would say sure, trying to be accommodating. I’m less and less accommodating and happier and happier every time. It has been a huge self-care moment. Calling all podcast nerds: today we’re launching a brand-new series celebrating the shows and hosts we love—that’s right, it’s time to kick off For the Love of Podcasts! And today we’re thrilled to bring you two fresh voices who started a new in the summer of 2019  and are just killing it: Charla Lauriston and Lauren Domino from The Secret Lives of Black Women! Charla and Lauren have created a space where they’re inviting all listeners to join, but they’re carving a space where black women can especially relate and be celebrated. Charla and Lauren have been friends for nearly a decade after meeting in a not-so-great workspace. Being in the trenches brought them closer together, and now they bring hilarious and poignant observations to their listeners with episodes each Thursday. Lauren and Charla share the unique challenges of being a black woman, their favorite role models—including their dream guests for their podcast (some of which mirror our own—psst, Oprah and Michelle Obama, call us!). Through podcasting, Charla and Laura have been able to confidently (and vulnerably) show who they are, where they’ve come from and share that sense of self with others as we all blaze a trail into the future.
