Susan Morrison (Lorne: The Man Who Invented Saturday Night Live, SPY Magazine, The New Yorker) is a journalist and author. Susan joins the Armchair Expert to discuss never wanting to subject her children to a life of moving around, marrying comedy and journalism into irreverant reporting at SPY Magazine, and loving the idea of walking through New York City as time travel. Susan and Dax talk about why humor is just the language we all speak to get by in the world, how Saturday Night Live is a monopoly for comedy, and that she could draw a line from all of Lorne's life experiences straight to the producing skills he would later develop. Susan explains that Lorne is a master of teaching people how to be in a room, why listening for the laugh during dress rehearsal is his secret sauce, and how Lorne's strategic instincts directly contributed to SNL being the longest running entertainment show in history.Follow Armchair Expert on the Wondery App or wherever you get your podcasts. Graydon Carter is the co-founder of Spy Magazine and Air Mail, and for 25 years, he was the editor of Vanity Fair. His memoir, When The Going Was Good, chronicles a time when the going was extremely good for glossy magazines and their star editors. During the golden age of magazines, Vanity Fair combined celebrity profiles with deeply reported journalism to great acclaim, and Carter, arguably, became more famous than many of his extremely talented writers.  He and Kara discuss everything from office politics at Vanity Fair to Canadian politics, including President Trump's (possible) descent into madness, the artistry involved in making a restaurant cool (as opposed to hot), and why anxiety is an essential ingredient for editors.   Questions? Laura is also an internet-famous copywriter, founder of Talking Shrimp, and co-creator, with Marie Forleo, of The Copy Cure. Laura started her writing career at Spy Magazine, New York Magazine, and then VH1 before starting her own copywriting and teaching business almost by accident. That business went on to earn a million dollars the year she turned 50–an achievement Laura wrote about for “Business Insider.” Fun fact: Laura taught Sherman Helmsley, aka George Jefferson from The Jeffersons, how to moonwalk. We covered: • How she finagled a job for herself that involved her watching a lot of TV (one of her favorite things to do) • Why getting paid to ‘'write emails to friends'' is her dream job • How inspiration comes from writing--not the other way around • The magical powers of writing on the fly • Her morning routine which includes iced coffee, a walk outside, and dicking around • The website she swears by to get her writing every day • How she deals with bouts of talker's block on social media Connect with Laura at talkingshrimp.com. THE GREATEST STARTUP IN THE HISTORY OF MAGAZINE STARTUPS—We've always had a thing for magazine launches. They're filled with drama and melodrama, people behaving with passion and conviction, and people ... misbehaving. Anything to get that first issue onto the stands and into the hands of readers. Some new ventures seem to sneak in the back door. Who saw Wired or Fast Company coming?Others are to the manner born, and from the most elite print parents. But, even with that pedigree they never gain traction, never display the scrappiness and experimentation that we've come to expect from anything new. (You know who you are). But then, one day, along comes The Greatest Startup in the History of Magazine Startups. A magazine that dares to mercilessly, and humorously, vilify high society. The one that big time journalists pretend to ignore but were first to the newsstand each month to grab their copy. The one that created packaging conceits: Separated at Birth, Private Lives of Public Enemies, Blurb-o-mat, and Naked City. Plus, the adorable nicknames — “Short-fingered vulgarian” — that persist to this day. That's right, we're talking about Spy.And in this episode we'll meet Kurt Andersen who, along with Graydon Carter and Tom Philips, founded what became an instantaneous cultural phenomenon: SPY magazine. The axis of the publishing world tilted when it hit the stands.“Spy was the most influential magazine of the 1980s,” the author Dave Eggers wrote. “It definitely changed the whole tone of magazine journalism. It was cruel, brilliant, beautifully-written and perfectly-designed — and feared by all.”There had never been anything like Spy before.Nothing since has come close. This week, Alan, Quinta, and Scott were joined once again by co-host emeritus and Lawfare Editor-in-Chief Benjamin Wittes to talk through national security news stories from the Holy Land to the Lone Star State, including:“Rebel Aviv.” Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu's efforts to dramatically reform Israel's legal system hit a roadblock this past week in the form of widespread popular protests. After sacking his defense minister for suggesting that the reforms should be delayed, Netanyahu did just that—even as he also took steps to allow his most far-right allies to set up their own militia. What does this all mean for the future of Israeli democracy? “Wake Up in the Mornin' Feelin' Like J Biddy.” President Joe Biden may be poised to try and ban TikTok from the United States in light of the Chinese government's opposition to efforts to force a sale. And if he doesn't take such steps, Congress might. But is either step legally viable? What policy approach is best for this particular moment? “Whacko We Do.” Former President Trump held his first major campaign rally this past week in Waco, Texas. Among the headliners were controversial shock-rocker Ted Nugent and a literal chorus of individuals being prosecuted for participating in the Jan. 6 insurrection. Trump followed with extended remarks that dug deep into conspiracy theories and put rival Ron Desantis clearly in his crosshairs. What should we make of the event? And what does it tell us about the 2024 race? For object lessons, Alan urged listeners to check out the world historical 2010 NPR interview with none other than Ke$ha. Quinta welcomed the return of her Succession overlords. Scott offered a double-header: an endorsement of the Maximum Fun podcast network, which is currently holding its annual MaxFunDrive; and the perfect recipe for spring time, Melissa Clark's pasta primavera. There's a secret society called the Bohemian Club that holds a two-week exclusive event every year at Bohemian Grove in the Redwoods just north of San Francisco. Tim Chizmar (of The Game fame) returns to discuss this invitation-only, elite club that offers membership exclusively to rich and powerful men (most of whom are white). Famous actors, musicians, artists, business men and politicians are among the members who dress like druids and worship a 40-foot giant Owl god voiced by Walter Cronkite. Alex Jones infiltrated Bohemian Grove in 2000 and filmed one of their rituals, the Creation of Care. Journalist Phillip Weiss from Spy Magazine also snuck into Bohemian Grove in 1989, and wrote an in-depth piece on their activities and location. And Tim Chizmar has three first-hand accounts about Bohemian Grove from former employees. But the real question to ask is, is Bohemian Grove just a summer camp for powerful, rich men or is there something else more sinister and nefarious going on among the trees and in the elaborate tunnels rumored to run beneath the forest? Thank you for supporting our sponsors!FanDuel: download the FanDuel app & use promo code JERICHO to get up a “No Sweat First Bet” up to $1,000 dollars.eBay Motors: get the right parts, the right fit, and the right prices. https://ebaymotors.comToyota: Visit https://toyota.com/GRFamily to find your perfect Toyota!Cynch: download the Cynch app or go https://www.cynch.com/ and get your first tank exchange for $10 with code JERICHO.Bosch Tools: learn more at https://www.boschtools.com/us/en/SlingTV: check out https://www.sling.com/ for special offers  STAY CONNECTED:TikTok: @TalkIsJerichoInstagram: @talkisjericho @chrisjerichofozzy Twitter: @TalkIsJericho @IAmJerichoYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/ChrisJerichoFozzyWebsite: https://www.webisjericho.com/

Kurt Andersen has been exploring the nature of American culture throughout his varied career, from co-founding Spy Magazine, writing for Time and The New Yorker, writing several novels, hosting the public radio show Studio 360, and most comprehensively through his recent two volume history of America: Fantasyland: How America Went Haywire and Evil Geniuses: The Unmaking of America. This week's episode of our New York City special is something of a departure from our normal service, in that it's much more about storytelling than menswear. You can blame Aleks for this; the chance to quiz Air Mail deputy editor and New York Times bestselling author Michael Hainey on on his extraordinary career was just too much to handle. So, in this conversation Aleks explores Hainey's career, gets his take on ‘finding your voice', and hears Hainey's thoughts on why the best journalists write up what they see, rather than what they think. The pair also chat through Hainey's cathartic experience in writing his extraordinary memoire, After Visiting Friends. If you enjoy listening, don't forget to follow us on Instagram @handcutradio, and leave us a five star review – it boosts us up the podcast charts, and helps other listeners to discover HandCut Radio.---HandCut Radio is produced by Birch, the London based creative office of James Allen. We've always had a thing for magazine launches. They're filled with drama and melodrama, people behaving with passion and conviction, and people ... misbehaving. Anything to get that first issue onto the stands and into the hands of readers. Some new ventures seem to sneak in the back door. Who saw Wired or Fast Company coming? Others are to the manner born, and from the most elite print parents. That's right, we're talking about Spy. And in this episode we'll meet Kurt Andersen who, along with Graydon Carter and Tom Philips, founded what became an instantaneous cultural phenomenon: SPY magazine. The axis of the publishing world tilted when it hit the stands. “Spy was the most influential magazine of the 1980s,” the author Dave Eggers wrote. “It definitely changed the whole tone of magazine journalism. It was cruel, brilliant, beautifully-written and perfectly-designed — and feared by all.” There had never been anything like Spy before. Nothing since has come close.

Pat talks to Kurt Andersen about his book: Evil Geniuses, the Unmaking of America. Andersen is the author of novels such as Fantasyland. He co-founded Spy Magazine, was managing editor of Time magazine, lead host of NPR's studio 360 and he's covered the politics and architecture beat for various publications. While he was aware of the widening wealth gap throughout the 1970s, 80s, and 90s, it wasn't until he wrote Fantasyland and started research for Evil Geniuses that he saw the intentionality and deviousness of the systematic way in which corporate interests have shaped our political economy over the last 50 years. Evil Geniuses examines coordinated efforts to achieve conservative economical and political changes in the United States from the 1970s to 2020, and discusses how the resulting unfettered laissez-faire approach to capitalism has resulted in an extreme level of economic inequality. In addition to talking about the history of how the system was rigged, how Americans were taught to distrust the government, and how taxes and regulations have been systematically slashed since the 1970s, Andersen explains in the interview some potential solutions to wealth inequality: Universal Basic Income, Boosting Union membership and Union power, worker Co-operatives, removing the profit motive from healthcare, and more. In the open, Dan is back! We went for a longer discussion this episode to provide plenty of discussion around some of the key issues that Pat and Kurt Andersen discuss in the interview. We discussed the current Infrastructure Bill as well. This episode was edited, mixed, and mastered by CMoney Burns. Hearing from Graydon reminded me of the good old days of New York publishing and magazine life—his decadent parties at the Puck building were absolutely unforgettable, equipped with mountains of pâté, all-girl swing bands, and filled with women in Madonna-style bubble dresses.  Once co-founder of the satirical Spy Magazine and editor-in-chief of Vanity Fair, Graydon has escaped New York for the Cote d’Azur, where he has been staying with his family and surrounded by an international crowd of friends and acquaintances. Currently writing a memoir that he anticipates will be both “illuminating” and “slightly mortifying,” the editor is also working on his weekly digital publication, “Air Mail", and loves seeing his team on Zoom every Friday evening for the office’s Happy Hour tradition.  I spoke to Graydon over Zoom about why he loves newsstands, how he imagines Cannes becoming a drive-in film festival, and why he stays off of social media altogether.

Thursday, April 23, 2020, 12 noon WPKN 89.5 FM www.wpkn.org Host: Duo Dickinson Winston Churchill famously said, “We shape our buildings, then they shape us.” That was a reassuring idea for architects, who have long believed that they could define culture. These last weeks may prove the opposite. What shapes our culture, shapes what we build, and what we build shapes architecture. The order is rarely shuffled. This past month has seen our world dramatically change. A virus exploded into the global population, because in part the world has shrunk: in many places people live in a greater density than ever before. The impact of Covid19 is just the latest extreme break in our cultural evolution, and its impacts are seismic, and will change the way we build things. These events could mean that our culture is at the beginning of a flattening of a much older curve. This curve did not start with “thought leaders” it was created by commerce and technology. The world has exploded in connection since World War 2. The number of those flying went from 100 million passengers in 1966 to 1.4 billion in 2018. We connected. We became denser, and we became more vulnerable. What happens to “Density” and New Urbanism in the Post COVID19 world? What happens to architecture’s “International School”‘s base default Canon of Modernism? Will we continue to aspire to an architectural, even cultural Esperanto? Will the vernacular in all aesthetics become desirable? Will our reduced footprint in Mid-COVID19 sequestration be desirable once we all get vaccinated? Join 3 exceptional thought leaders in architecture, culture and urban visioning. Kurt Andersen helped created Spy Magazine, the Studio 360 Radio program, was the architecture critic of Time Magazine, and has recently written “Fantasyland” among many best selling books. Nikos Salingaros is a math professor at the University of Texas, architecture critic and urban designer, who has written and talked worldwide on all things aesthetic. If Don Rickles were a woman with a slight weight problem and a well-documented fondness for having sex with African-American men, he'd sound an awful lot like comedienne Lisa Lampanelli, comedy's lovable queen of mean. Lampanelli studied journalism at Syracuse University and Harvard, and briefly enjoyed a successful career in the magazine industry, working at 'Popular Mechanics," "Spy Magazine," and was contributor for "Hit Parader" and "Rolling Stone." Deciding journalism was not for her, she quit and became a party DJ in 1990, entertaining partygoers via the microphone. Following a trip to a comedy club, she took a course in improvisation, which led to her first successful stand-up performances in New York City in the early 1990s. Lampanelli's real rise to fame began in 2001, where she made a stand-out appearance on Comedy Central's Friar's Club Roast of Hugh Hefner and was invited back in 2002 as the only female comedian invited to roast Chevy Chase at the New York Friars club which would air on Comedy Central. One of the few white comedians to perform on BET's comic view, she became a regular guest on Howard Stern's radio show, produced her first stand-up special, "The Queen of Mean" in 2002, and her first album, "Take it Like A Man," tied into another cable special with the same title in 2006 peaked at #6 on the comedy charts. In 2006, Lampanelli made her movie debut along side fellow comic Larry the Cable Guy in his film "Health Inspector," and issued her second album, "Dirty Girl," in early 2007, with the simultaneous release of a concert DVD featuring the same material, which reached #4 on the charts and was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album of the year...culminating in being named "Maxim Magazine's" Bachelorette of the year. In 2008, she served as roastmaster for the Larry the Cable Guy Roast, and also performed at Carnegie Hall and Radio City Music Hall. In 2009, Lisa published her first book, a memoir "Chocolate, Please: My Adventures in Food, Fat, and Freaks." Lampanelli's other comedy albums include "Long Live the Queen," "Tough Love," and most recently was again nominated for a Grammy Award-her second- for "Back to the Drawing Board." She was a contestant on "Celebrity Apprentice," where she raised $130,000 for gay men's health crisis.

It's the most wonderful time of the year of course, by wonderful, I  mean living in the state of total, unending, frantic chaos and constantly forgetting that you have to buy stamps and your out of Scotch tape. BUT we have an amazing show providing two very interesting looks inside the beautiful business that we call show to wrap up the 2016 year. Pete Aronson is here. Pete is the head of programming and development at the Independent Film Channel, not only is the executive who shepherded my show Stan Against Evil through development and production, he is also is an old friend of mine, who I met first as a writer, and I thought, as we wrap up the year, who better to give you an executive's perspective on the TV business, but in the way regular people can understand and relate to. Pete is smart, funny and a profoundly decent human being, but he's managed to stay working in show business despite that. Also, Kliph Nesteroff and Drew Friedman are here. Kliph wrote one of my favorite books of 2016, The Comedians, a history of stand up comedy in America, now in paperback, and Drew Friedman, Drew is something of a legend. He is an cartoonist and caricature artist. You've seen his work on the cover of The New Yorker, the New York Observer, the late, great, SPY Magazine, but his notoriety goes all the way back to the underground comics of the early '80's like Weirdo and Screw. His book Any Resemblance To Persons Living Or Dead Is Purely Coincidental is one of the single funniest things I have ever read, and his new book, More Heroes Of The Comics, is out right now. http://DanaGould.com

Getting emotional at the office is typically a big no-no. Expressing anger can be particularly nasty. But is it really healthy to keep it all in? (Black Mirror Season 3 watchers will know the answer to that.) Maybe Trump really is right (yes, that's not a typo) and what happens at work IS, in fact, only business? Cue Anne Kreamer, one of the founders of Spy Magazine, a Fast Company columnist, and author of the book (cue drumroll)...It's All Personal. Anne gave us the full frontal on anger at work, and we didn't cry once. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In 2009, Lisa published her first book, a memoir "Chocolate, Please: My Adventures in Food, Fat, and Freaks." Lampanelli's other comedy albums include "Long Live the Queen," "Tough Love," and most recently this year was again nominated for a Grammy Award-her second- for "Back to the Drawing Board." She was a contestant on "Celebrity Apprentice," where she raised $130,000 for gay men's health crisis. Lampanelli is currently performing in the world premiere of her off-broadway play, "Stuffed," which explored the complexity of women's relationship to food and body image through her signature comedic style. At the Mcginn/Cazale Theater at 2162 Broadway at 76th street.

Then I did this risky thing that shouldn't have succeeded, I started this magazine. And it did encourage me to think, ‘Eh, how bad can it be if it fails? Sometimes these long shots work. So fuck it, try it.’” Thanks to MailChimp, MasterClass, The Message, RealtyShares, and Prudential for sponsoring this week's episode. Henry Alford is a very funny writer. I've been laughing at his writing since about 1990, when he erupted in Spy Magazine, with hilarious speculative pieces like, "What If The Pope Were A Dog?"Not long ago, he was asked to review a collection by another funny writer, Garrison Keillor. He did it, keenly aware that many people who find him funny are the kinds of people who find Keillor tiresome. And, maybe a bigger problem, Keillor had written some columns about gays and atheists that riled up not just Alford's fans, but people he knows pretty well. So what's a critic to do? Alford actually admired some things about the book, and said so. There was pushback. We'll talk about that today on The Scramble.
