Ready to rest and fresh your family and financial goals? This year we're exploring how to have a rich life! The Challenge: Make 2023 A Rich Life Okay, that's a pretty bold statement – have a rich life. Let first back track on how I came up with this theme for the season and then we can talk about what a rich life looks like. Even before we wrapped up this last season in November, something had been nagging me about the podcast. Besides Simplify and Enjoy, I also write and run Couple Money which is focused on helping married couples get on the same page with their finances. I've really loved it. As we were paying off debts, stashing and growing our financial cushion, and eventually becoming a CoastFI family, it's been fantastic to hear from you and other families on the milestones you're reaching. Between the two, I've been writing and or podcasting about personal finance for over 12 years and it's been incredible. However as important as getting your finances squared away, it's just one piece of the puzzle. So I took time off throughout last year including one in October where I just disconnected from the work. I allowed myself to explore and read other topics besides finances to see if I could add something to this podcast that would help you and other families have not just an amazing year with your finances, but really allow you to enjoy things. The first think that clicked for me was a quote from Cal Newport. It served as a jumping-off point for me as I looked at 2023 and what I wanted to do. Do less. Do better. Know why. Instantly, I knew I wanted to dig into this. Initially, I thought about how it would in with podcast. Do less. Families are stressed out because they're doing so much. There's always this list of a million things you need to do to get your money straight. Or here's how you work, be a FT parent, and have a side hustle. It's too much noise and nonsense. I want to keep things simple and flexible so you can build and design your life as needed. Do better. With time and energy freed up because we're no doing a ton of things, how can we use that to create something special? Let's put energy into building up our relationships, levelling up on skills with work, and taking on a projects and hobbies that are meaningful to us. Know why. Productivity culture almost elevates being busy like it's a virtue, but the real challenge is having and knowing your purpose for what you're doing. This definition can then be used so you can gauge when you have enough. Resources If you're ready to jump into the year and knock out some goals, here are a few of my favorite resources and includes what we covered in the podcast. As many of you know, I have a number of things on my plate, I wear a lot of hats. From running The Financial Gym, to working with my own clients, to working on this podcast. There are many days I think I need to cut back on podcasting. But on days like today, I am so thankful for this platform and opportunity to share someone and a resource that I feel is truly beneficial and can help you live a better life. Joining me today is Elle Martinez, Elle was previously on the podcast to discuss her podcast and website, Couple Money. And she joins me today to share why she created a new podcast and website, Simplify & Enjoy and the unique approach she's taking to the FI movement. I always love catching up with Elle, especially because she makes her own alcohol. For more information, visit the show notes at https://www.martinisandyourmoney.com/show-notes/episode450

Bio: Sylvia Inks is a business strategist, finance expert, and speaker who teaches small business owners how to make sense of their numbers (so they know what to do differently) and build multiple profitable income streams. What's the process really like when you're paying off a mountain of debt? Today we get into the habits and mindset changes Toni and her family made to pay off over $100k of debt! How One Family Paid $100K of Debt I love a good debt free story. I enjoy seeing others work hard to get rid of the credit card, student loans, car loans, and other debt that is weighing them down. I also know personal experience is not always fast or even a smooth process. For us, it began with getting on the same page with how we wanted to tackle it. Then there was the reality of the numbers. My husband has his first post-grate job and I had a part time internship. With time, we found our rhythm and knocked it out. I've also had quite a few episodes on this podcast and on Couple Money sharing people's journey, including Toni Husbands. What I loved about her story is that it wasn't a ‘We paid off ‘$100,000 in year and half story'. Which in all honesty, I enjoy watching and reading too, but when that's the main narrative being shared, it's a bit discouraging because they tend to gloss over key details. When you dig into the article, you can see that both are earning six figures or I've even seen where parents chip in for them to buy a house in an expensive city. My problem isn't with those details, but the fact that it gives the false impression of how easy it is to become debt free. In many cases, it's a commitment and in that journey not only are you freeing up your finances because you don't have that debt anymore, but you're opening up options. In this episode we are discussing a lot of the nuances and struggles that can come up. We'll get into: Some of the hurdles and challenges she had to overcome Which habits helped and what she would do differently Opportunities that opened up now that's she's dumped her debt Let's get started! I have for you today, the perfect episode especially piggybacking on last week's interview with Couple Money's Elle Martinez. I realize it's pretty bold to call something the number one factor in determining success. The truth is success is a combination of lots of factors. With my more advanced private clients, there are certain habits I like to check in with them about. We're all human and we all have a tendency to drift if we're not intentional. One of those habits and one that is near and dear to me is being on the same page with your significant other about your money. You see, back when Melissa and I were drowning in over 130K of non-mortgage debt, we didn't have good communication around money. Now, it's one of the factors I consider most responsible for the success we've experienced over the past decade. Listen to today's episode as I share the exact strategy we use to be on the same page with our finances. It's not always easy but it's certainly worth it! Here are some important links. One of the most common questions I'm asked is, “How do I get my spouse/partner onboard with money?” For that reason, I'm excited to have Elle Martinez, host of the Simplify and Enjoy Podcast to share tips and strategies for being aligned as a couple. Elle has a great financial story of her own and a very down to earth, relatable, teaching style. Lots of gems are dropped but I love the discussion on gaining alignment with goals, values, and priorities. There is no better time to gain alignment with your spouse than now as we enter a new year. Summer 2021 is right around the corner and with it comes a wave of weddings and social gatherings that have been postponed since last year. With invitations rolling in, how do you keep savings stacked without coming off as a post-COVID scrooge? Joining us to help navigate the lines between big-roller, sensible, and miser is Elle Martinez, the well-suited creator behind the Couple Money blog and podcast; Len Penzo from the LenPenzo.com blog, and our very own OG. After we're done dishing out wedding success tips, we do you one better: how would you like to win money for just knowing about money? Okay, truth be told you (the reader!) may not be eligible. BUT, United One Bank President Teri Williams joins us to share how the children in your family or neighborhood could win $1,000 for flexing their money brains. Plus, do you have cryptocurrency FOMO after multiple headlines about people striking it rich? Stacker John calls in and tells us his son has seen some pretty rapid gains (and drops) since buying cryptocurrency. John's son decided to buy a few other cryptos to diversify, and while that makes sense on paper, John feels like pouring money into the digital currency is closer to gambling than investing. Of course, we always save some time for Doug's trivia game-show. It's unbelieva-bull.... Enjoy! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Seeing that it’s the end of the year and it seems that everybody’s publishing lists I thought I’d share my list of top lessons learned from our guests in 2020 on the #1 topic that we’ve discussed this year; Money Mindset. 6 takeaways from this year’s episodes on our number 1 topic - Money Mindset Our money habits are shaped by our past and our values When looking to get on the same page with your partner about money: It’s important to understand how their current relationship with money may be influenced by negative experiences and habits modeled for them earlier in their lives. Cultivate empathy for your partner. Realize that they could be dealing with guilt, shame, embarrassment related to their money past Think collaboration, not compromise. Aim for the “sweet spot”, something that piques each person’s interest and feels good while honoring shared values. Seek common values when discussing money with your partner. As long as values are aligned, differing specific methods of pursuing those values can be worked through. It’s important to understand our own money past and habits as well as our partner’s Our money habits are shaped by behaviors we unconsciously pick up growing up; we tend to either emulate or do the opposite Understand your own Money Past. Ask your questions like: What were you taught about money? How did your parents behave with money? Mindset and budgeting; be flexible, communicate, keep it simple Budgets are personal and unique to every situation; there are no “one size fits all” answers or simple formulas to determine the right approach. The best budget is the one that each partner buys in to. Unity of purpose between a couple is more important than having the “perfect” financial plan Allocating dedicated money in your budget for each partner (no questions asked) can help to reduce the chances of secret spending by one partner. Talk to your partner before starting a budget. The mechanics can primarily fall to one partner, but decisions need to be 50/50. Each partner should have a role in the budgeting process based on their strengths Keep your budget simple. Complicated budgets can discourage participation Budgeting at the level the granularity needed to make adjustments when things don’t go according to plan Be sensitive to the fact that some partners are resistant to discuss money because they don’t want to feel controlled, others are intimidated by the subject and feel they don’t understand it Budgets can be too restrictive. Simple pleasures are often habits, for lasting change back away from them gradually like you would when trying to change any habit. Budget needs to be realistic for your lifestyle, your needs, and sustainable. Beware of Financial Enabling - can hurt both the giver and receiver of money Underspending is as much of a problematic financial behavior as overspending Know your financial “Why” If your partner is being secret about their financial behavior, Look to understand the “why behind the what” When seeking to engage your partner in a discussion about your finances, start with your why Make sure you and your partner are working towards the same goals Discuss what you would like to do with your time if money was not an issue Understand one another’s motivation, then come up with a plan Accept responsibility Be open to seeing how your own behavior could be a factor in your partner’s reluctance to engage in discussions about money Money Mindset episodes to check out: Amy Westbrook - Certified Life Coach, professional Wealth Coach (1) Lindsey Bryan-Podvin - Financial Therapist, Author, Host, Mind Money Balance Podcast (2) Karen Ford - Master Financial Coach and Author (3) Assel EL-Baba Financial Therapist and Money mindset Coach (5) Adam Kol - Couples Financial Counselor, Host of the Equal Partners Podcast (6) Dan Hinz - Financial Coach and Founder of Adulting with Money (7) Elle Martinez - Creator of CoupleMoney (website and Podcast) (8) Les Nienow -Coaching Liaison and Senior Financial Coach at Ramsey Solutions (9) Suzanne Johnson - Ramsey Solutions Master Financial Coach (12) Jed Jurchenko - Life and Leadership Coach (13) Annette Schmidt - The FinSavvy Mom, host of the Scared to Savvy Podcast (15) Ericka Young - Founder of Tailor Made Budgets and Author (21)

Don't talk to strangers. Make your savings automatic. Don't buy so many lattes. How many pieces of unsolicited advice have helped you become a better version of yourself? Today our contributors are helping us walk through a recent blog post that delivered exactly 68 pieces of advice to help you live a better life financially AND mentally. Helping us with today's show are our near-and-dear contributors: Elle Martinez (of Couple Money), Len Penzo of LenPenzo.com, and our very own OG. Halfway through the show we'll take a break from the unsolicited advice (that you should totally listen to by the way), and we'll learn some strategies on keeping your children engaged and responsible while everyone is stuck at home. During our Fintech segment, Gregg Murset of BusyKid will also share how his app can help your family learn better habits, and put their allowance to good use by teaching them to save, give, and be a part of a community. Ever hear the phrase, "just because you can, doesn't mean you should"? A few weeks ago we asked our friends on Twitter to give us their best answer... but with finances in mind. During our Magnify Money segment we'll share our favorite replies, and our contributors will even share a few of their own answers. One last note: Remember the story in the news recently about the elderly man who ejected himself from the French fighter jet? We won't give away too much, but Doug has some heart-pounding trivia for you on today's show. Today's podcast is another high flier! Enjoy!
Communicating with your partner about money can be difficult in the best of situations, let alone staying inside for weeks on end. That's why to kick off our rewind week the Fintern picked a topic that will hopefully keep you out of some hot water: how you can stop fighting about money! You can check out the original show notes below: Looking for the perfect budget? Maybe the key isn't counting every penny or finding the perfect spreadsheet. Elle Martinez, author of the new book Couple Money, believes that whether you're single or married the answer might lie in communication, and we'll tackle how to have money dates and stop fighting about money on today's show. In our headlines segment, we share a story about comedian Tracy Morgan. Apparently Walmart, who paid him $90M after a severe accident in 2015, wants more proof about his injury. We'll discuss disability coverage and more from that fallout. Then we throw out the Haven Life line to Susan, who asks about taking out a student loan for her son so he can establish credit. We'll also answer a letter from Julian about Roth IRAs, help Doug bring down the trivia, and sprinkle in some pick up lines along the way.
This episode’s name comes not only from my guest’s amazing podcast but also because it’s exactly what we discuss! Join Elle Martinez as she shares lessons from her decade of experience helping couples navigate their finances and relationship. I promise Elle will leave you feeling like she really understands your situation, and you’ll get actionable steps along the way. Be careful, because once you tune in to this podcast, your interest is sure to...compound. Tune in on Tuesdays for new episodes featuring real-life stories, money and relationship experts, and lots of fun along the way!
#006: Talking about money with your spouse can be tough, especially if it hasn’t gone well in the past. Having the same life goals doesn’t necessarily mean you have the same financial goals or the same ideas about how to get there. In today's episode, Elle Martinez - founder of Couple Money and author of Jumpstart Your Marriage and Your Money - shares how managing money with your partner is all about learning to work better together as a couple in all areas of life. It’s not about blame—it’s about self-awareness and compassion and respect. If you work on understanding your own money mindset first, then your partner’s, it’s so much easier to create and stick to a plan that will take you where you both want to go. When should you start talking about money in a new relationship? We know that financial stress can have a negative impact on our relationships, while healthy money conversations can strengthen a couple’s connection—and even lead to better gay sex! But when is the best time to bring it up? On this episode of the podcast, we’re sharing the results of our couples money conversation poll in the Queer Money Facebook Group, offering our insight on why talking about finances is crucial for couples who cohabitate and what questions it’s okay to ask early on in a new relationship. We walk you through our top five money tips for gay couples, explaining why it’s best to have the initial money conversation in public and how to work together on improving your credit scores. One of the top three financial goals people have is getting out of debt, but few actually knock it out. Today we’re diving into key money systems couples have used to become debt-free! Best Strategies for Couples to Dump Debt Faster How are you doing?! I hope you’re having a wonderful week. We’re back. New Year, a new season of the podcast. I want to start off by saying thank you. Your support has been incredible and because of it, we’re here for season 10! When I started the site Couple Money and even the podcast a few years, my goal was pretty simple. Help couples not only get their finances in a good spot but find a way for money to be a way to work together instead of being a source of stress. Whether you’re paying down debt, saving for a dream, or going down the path of financial independence, the main focus is doing it as a team. We’ll definitely be covering that this season again, but there’s another issue I’ve been seeing that has added a layer of unnecessary stress when it comes to finances. As I look at my newsfeed on my phone or catch some stories that get picked up, I just see this trend of HUGE stories. Debt-free stories where the couples have paid massive amounts of debt – six-figures- in a crazy short amount of time. Couples who have saved 60%, 70% of their income in a year. These are incredible stories and I’ve found them at times to be motivating and challenging us to look at how we spend money. I’ve even had a few of them on the podcast. However, when these are the stories that get picked up again, and again, you kind of get a bit fatigued and when the headlines only tell part of the story – like the fact they were making incredible amounts of money, then you can feel discouraged. Add on that many of these stories don’t talk about that key step – aligning your goals and getting on the same page. If you’re not there, then you almost can feel like throwing up your arms and just giving up. I don’t want to give up. I would love for you to tackle those big goals, but more importantly, I want you two to feel comfortable and excited about the plan you two carved out for yourselves. How? By acknowledging while there are certain financial principles that are incredibly helpful, we all have different approaches to how we tackle our goals. Today we’re going to do that with one of the most common goals families have with their finances – paying off their debts. Today I want to share some guests we’ve had on the show who have become debt-free, but had different amounts and time tables. In this episode we’re looking at: The step by step process of how to set up a system to pay off your debt faster Some of the most common hangups couples have with becoming debt-free Tools and apps to make it easier Let’s get started! Welcome to Simplify and Enjoy, the podcast and community focused on helping families have less stress and more options thru minimalism and financial independence! I’ve been in the personal finance space for almost 10 years. Besides running Couple Money and now Simplify and Enjoy, I’ve also written for other sites like Business Insider, Turbotax, LendingTree, Entrepreneur,…you get the idea. When people see this online or maybe a friend finds out what I do, many assume that my husband and I talk about money. A lot. But that’s not the case. For us, money is a tool that we use to reach our goals. Whether it’s deciding where to live, being able to work from home, having more time with the kids, and saving up enough to become financially free or even independent – all of these require being wise with the money coming in. The big question we’re personally tackling is how we can work towards becoming financially independent while raising our kids? We’re grateful that so far we’ve managed to pay off debts like the car loan and student loans, which gives us more options to save and invest our money. We have been able to explore options like working from home because we have the buffer. A big part of the how is through pursuing minimalism and financial independence. But as we have taken this journey as parents and as a couple we’ve also had to make some choices that may have skewed from what’s typically shown in the media. We’re above average savers, but we’ve also pulled back at times because we want to enjoy the now with our little ones. We cut back on eating out, but we’re still foodies. Travel is a part of our budget. While we’ve taken on some DIY projects around the house and our tech, we also have no problem calling in contractors or splurging on some tech we know we’ll use and enjoy. We’re trying to balance raising our kids while being wise with our time and money. So if you’re parents looking to give your family more options to design a life that reflects what you love, Simplify and Enjoy is for you!
We dearly love to interrogate couples about how they negotiate money, and for this latest round we caught Owen and Sue just before they went on a date and forced them to tell us how they talk about money with each other. Well, we say "forced"...but it didn't take too much effort on our part, because it turns out that this married couple with young kids has their money communication strategy down cold. It's a beautiful thing to see, and we're excited to share it with you. Timestamps: 5:30 - Owen and Sue's amazing, incredible, all powerful money meeting 12:10 - What changed when they had kids? 15:15 - Why Sue budgets in a Word Doc (and Owen DOES NOT) 25:03 - What would Owen and Sue do with a surprise $3,000? 26:10 - How do they figure out what's 'fairsies'? 32:50 - What's the advice you would give to other couples managing their money?

Real Retirement Planning for Real Life Gotta love analytics. You all that data floating about. Once a week I look over things including what people searching when they discover Couple Money. It’s a big question for sure, but I don’t think it’s the right question. At least not to start with. As you probably discovered with that first question I asked, retirement can be completely different things to everyone. And sometimes you two can have differing opinions. So how do you figure what you need to do? You have to look at it at two different angles. Of course, there’s the technical part with the specific investments in your portfolio. But you before you do that you need a game plan. One that is robust and at the same time, can adjust as your life changes. Which is why I brought the Retirement Answer Man himself - Roger Whitney! Wrapping Up a Big Year at FinCon LLast week, I went to Dallas to attend FinCon, a conference of independent personal finance publishers, fintech companies, and media focused on a positive money message. I had an incredible week chatting with buddies in the personal finance space. We've chatted throughout the year via Zoom or Skype, but it's special to hang out in person. Many of us got started because we were getting out of debt or saving for a dream. I also got to see what was going on with fintech. There are so many developments and right now, apps are coming out that are designed for couples. Got to enjoy some time with the HoneyFi team as well as a few others. And I was especially honored and grateful that Couple Money won best family finance blog for the second year in a row! But besides taking home a sweet trophy I also brought back a bug and I'm finally feeling more like myself. My voice is a little weak, but I didn't want to miss another week. It's the season finale and I want to talk about a few things that have been on my mind and some of what I heard on yours. In this episode, I want to discuss with you: tackling big goals while avoiding burnout budgeting for time off upcoming plans for the podcast and this site Hope you enjoy! Before Marc Ruskin was an undercover FBI agent, he was an assistant DA in Brooklyn. Why did he give up his career as a powerful attorney to join the FBI academy? Well, in order to prosecute criminals, you have to catch them first. It didn’t take long for Marc to become an undercover agent. For 27 years, he slipped into various different characters busting criminals ranging from drug dealers to Wall Street insiders. At one point, Marc was juggling three or four cases at a time – switching back and forth between identities. He wrote a book about his time at the FBI appropriately titled “The Pretender.” When I first discovered his book I immediately shot him a message. Luckily for me, he agreed to share some of his stories. In the late 80s and early 90s, San Juan Puerto Rico had one of the highest murder rates of any US city. Some of the violence can be blamed on the Machetero, a separatist group actively trying to make Puerto Rico and independent country. Marc: "So I had gone from being an attorney in New York where the biggest thing I had to worry about was a papercut. Now I was in the streets of San Juan Puerto Rico as a combatant to the Macheteros. We learned at one point that the Macheteros had a plot to assassinate an FBI agent. The problem was, we didn’t know who the FBI agent was." Listen to my interview with Marc Ruskin on part 1 of "The Pretender" on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts. You can find The Pretender on Amazon.com or at your local bookstore. Also a special thanks out to St. Martin’s Press for letting me share Marc’s story with you. https://www.amazon.com/Pretender-My-Life-Undercover-FBI/dp/1250068630/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1504062442&sr=8-1&keywords=the+pretender+ruskin Also, you can follow Marc Ruskin on Twitter http://twitter.com/mhruskin Also, listen to my new favorite podcast at: Moms and Murder: http://momsandmurder.com/ Pints and puzzles: http://pintsandpuzzles.libsyn.com/ Pleasing Terrors http://pleasingterrors.com/ Twisted Podcast: http://www.twistedpodcast.com/ Couple Money: http://couplemoneypodcast.com/ Triangle Tactical Podcast: https://triangletactical.net/ Learn more about your ad choices. Today on the show, I'm joined by Elle Martinez. Elle is the creator and award-winning blogger behind Couple Money, a site and podcast dedicated to helping spouses build their marriage and wealth together. Each week she interviews financial experts and real-life couples who've achieved impressive financial goals like becoming debt free, starting a business, and retiring early. Through her podcast, she finds patterns and habits that help couples become successful. In addition to Couple Money, Elle has been a contributing writer to such major media platforms as Business Insider, TurboTax, Entrepreneur, Lending Tree, and many more. In her debut book Jumpstart Your Marriage & Your Money, Elle shares her four-week plan to help couples stop worrying about money and start building wealth together. The book helps couples build open and honest communication and get started on the path to financial freedom. By combining personal stories as well as lessons learned from interviewing hundreds of successful couples, Elle shows just how "personal" finance can be, and teaches you how to live a simpler, more stress-free life. Here's my conversation with Elle Martinez, in episode 239 of Informed Choice Radio.
Looking for the perfect budget? Special thanks to M1Finance for sponsoring our show! We couldn't do any of this without the support of some pretty awesome companies.
We share a ton of laughs and talk all things managing money in a relationship, with Elle Martinez the Founder and host of the Couple Money Podcast, CoupleMoney.com, and the author of the upcoming book titled Couple Money. In her new book, Elle shares a four-step process that will help any couple get their finances together. Check it out.
