SHOW NOTES: https://jewishbooks.blogspot.com/2024/11/creature-double-feature-part-ii-emi.html TRANSCRIPT: https://otter.ai/u/LlqEguYzidUDn_uqBHgEK5B1QKY?utm_source=copy_url For the month of November 2024, we've got a 2-part series, CREATURE DOUBLE FEATURE: ANTISEMITISM AND THE SUPERNATURAL. Our guest for Part II is Japanese American Jewish author Emi Watanabe Cohen. Her debut novel was The Lost Ryū (about dragons), and her sophomore novel is Golemcrafters (about golems, of course). I loved The Lost Ryū so much that I volunteered to review it for The Sydney Taylor Shmooze blog, because I wanted to point out a moment of allyship that touched my soul. Then, along came Golemcrafters. I must admit I was wary at first, because golems are kind of overdone, but this book drew me in even more than The Lost Ryū, with how much it mirrored my own emotional response to antisemitism. Both of these books are like hands reaching out to hold yours. I highly recommend that you reach back, and read both books yourself. Creature Double Feature Part I features an interview with Deke Moulton about her vampire and werewolf middle grade novels, Don't Want to Be Your Monster and Benji Zeb Is a Ravenous Werewolf, which make great companions to Emi's books. Our first guest is Deke Moulton, author of Don't Want to Be Your Monster (about Jewish vampires) and Benji Zeb Is a Ravenous Werewolf (about Jewish werewolves). These middle grade fantasy novels go beyond simple adventures with supernatural heroes. I love how they both delve deeply into the very nature of prejudice. I love how they both imagine worlds in which kids defeat hate. AND they are also fun, fast paced magical adventure stories. Creature Double Feature Part II is an interview with Emi Watanabe Cohen about her dragon and golem middle grade novels, The Lost Ryū and Golemcrafters, which make great companions to Deke's books. We can't stop talking about animals! After just finishing our 'Creature Double Feature' series on Patreon covering animal films we decided to do another on the main feed. This time we're talking horses! We brought an expert on the subject, Zach's mom, Donna Zweifler, to talk about the 2003 film 'Seabiscuit' about an underdog horse that inspired America during the Great Depression. We also discuss the 2015 documentary 'Harry & Snowman', another true inspirational horse tale. Donna dishes on her love of horses, her own horse history, and also a shocking revelation about rabbits!Listen to the entire Creature Double Feature series!Join the Extended Family on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/FilmwithFamilyYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@FilmwithFamilyInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/filmwithfamily/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@film.with.familyTwitter: https://twitter.com/filmwithfamilyFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61551928799003Email us at filmwithfamilypodcast@gmail.comLetterboxd: Austin C. Time to adjust the old rabbit ears, Slackers! This week is dedicated to the old ultra high frequency television channels of our youth. Kids these days have no idea what VHF or UHF even mean, because even broadcast TV went digital in 2009! But we had two dials, one on top and one on the bottom. The cool stuff was always on the lower dial and in New England we had channels like 25, 38, and 56. Some of my fondest memories are of watching TV on Saturday afternoons - after the cartoons were over - and seeing the “Creature Double Feature” or later, “Kung Fu Theater”. The “Creature Double Feature” gave us Japanese monster movies (kaiju) like Godzilla and Gamera, or classic horror from Universal and Hammer Studios. Think Christopher Lee's Dracula. And lots of Roger Corman flicks.“Kung Fu Theater” brought the best of Chinese martial arts to America. Remember Pai Mei from Tarantino's “Kill Bill”? Do you remember that same character from the martial arts movies in the late 70's & 80's? Check out the Shaw Brothers “Shaolin” films. And with the advent of cable TV, similar shows were broadcast nationally with “Commander USA's Groovie Movies” and Elvira's “Movie Macabre”.Such a fun time to be a kid and getting to watch some really absurd, totally surreal filmmaking!

Peter N. Dudar & L. L. Soares are two talented best buds who definitely know their way around horror! The Bram Stoker Award-Nominated, Dudar, having written such memorable titles as "A Reqiuem For Dead Flies", "Blood Cult of the Booby Farmers" and "Goat Parade" unleashed his newest grimy Grindhouse nightmare in late 2022, "The Mississippi Glory Hole Mutilations" from Grinning Skull Press. And because truth is stranger than fiction, Soares took home a Stoker the same year Dudar was nominated for his first novel, "Life Rage". Since then, he's published skin-crawling yarns such as "Rock 'N' Roll", "Hard", "Buried In Blue Clay" and his newest, "Teach Them How To Bleed", from Bloodshot Books. In this first BRIG of season 5, we get the goods on both of their newest books, before diving head first into a sprawling conversation about Creature Double Feature! In true Ridoctopus fashion, we each picked one classic monster flick that was played on the program and proceed to have an absolute blast talking about them! In this episode, Andrew almost weasels his way out of recording during the crew's first Creature Double Feature, but alas the show must go on. Nick and Kelsey forced him to watch it anyway and well you know he hated it... Quarantine is a found footage film centering around a news crew who goes out on a call with their local fire department during an exposé and bites off a bit more than they can chew as they get trapped in apartment building who's residents are biting each other's faces off. Filmmaker Nicholas McCarthy (THE PACT, AT THE DEVIL'S DOOR) shares his career journey with Adam, Joe, and Arwen and discusses his new “killer kid” film THE PRODIGY (opening in US theaters this Friday). Dr. Arwen weighs in with advice on sales agents and when (if ever) it's ok to call it quits on a project in her “Hollywood Therapy” segment, Nicholas answers our beloved Crypt Keepers' “Viewer Mail” questions, and Adam painfully accepts that it's time to retire the Aerosmith shirt he's worn since High School. The seven seas bring many a creature from the depths. Whether it's the Old Ones with tentacle features or a killer whale with vengeance on its mind, the oceans breed many an unsettling monster for us humans to face. Yes, in honor of The Meg, Double Edged Double Bill is doing a good old fashioned Sea Creature Double Feature. Adam Thomas and Thomas Mariani first contend with is Stuart Gordon's Dagon, an HP Lovecraft adaptation that brings on the spooky atmosphere and ghastly wet horrors from the deep. Then, the infamous 1977 Jaws rip off Orca. Basically, it's Moby Dick if the whale was Captain Ahab and the monster was an asshole fisherman played by Richard Harris. If you're confused, don't worry. They'll be plenty of whale exposition from Charlotte Rampling to catch you up to speed. Sit back and listen to a whale of a tale now! In this episode I interview writer Scott Goudsward. Scott's love of vampires began at an early age watching Bela Lugosi, Christopher Lee, and Peter Cushing on Creature Double Feature on Saturday afternoons. Scott always said he was going to write the massive vampire epic novel. Trailer Trash was not it. Scott's first published story, also called “Trailer Trash,” appeared in the anthology The Darkest Thirst. The novel was based on that story. Since then he has penned the screenplay for the short film “Granite Voice” and co-written two non-fiction books with his brother, David (Shadows Over New England and Shadows Over Florida). Currently he’s co-editing two anthologies for Chaosium with Rachel Kenley, Once Upon an Apocalypse, volume 1 and 2. Scott's short fiction has most recently appeared in the Stoker Award-nominated anthology Epitaphs, and the forthcoming Carnival of the Damned and Atomic Age Cthulhu. Visit Scott’s web site at http://www.goudsward.com/scott/ Goudsward is spelled g-o-u-d-s-w-a-r-d. Note: This interview was recorded at a convention, so there are varying levels of background noise.
