This week, I'm reading the seventh chapter of the Peter David penned movie novelization of the 1991 Rocketeer film.  This chapter introduces Jenny Blake, Cliff's girlfriend (called Betty in Dave Stevens' original comic as an ode to pin up icon Bettie Paige).  That part, in the film, went to Jennifer Connelly, who you may also remember from 1986's Labyrinth.   When I was a teen, I had VHS copies of Labyrinth, Howard the Duck, Some Kind of Wonderful, Sixteen Candles, and The Rocketeer taped off the TV (often the edited for TV versions and/or missing certain scenes) and those films were often on rotation on weekend mornings for me.  This section also introduces the character of Lothar, a character Dave Stevens based off character actor Rondo Hatton. Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce return to the show! I am joined by Beth Morris and Troy Guinn to discuss the next in Universal's long running Sherlock Holmes series featuring the legendary detective in the 1940's. This entry uses one of Arthur Conan Doyle's original short stories to provide the basic plot – or does it? We look at the film's very strong ties to a certain American crime fiction writer's famous story that the script seems to borrow from. Is this a mash-up of two tales that taste great together?   THE PEARL OF DEATH (1944) is a movie that doesn't spring to mind as one of the best of the Universal Holmes films but perhaps it should. The series' regulars are in fine form and returning guest actor Evelyn Ankers gets a lot to do as the main female baddie. She seems capable of getting any job in London and can disguise herself effectively in the bargain. In fact, this film has her character, Sherlock and the lead bad guy Giles Conover so often pretending to be someone else that it plays like there is a contest between them! And the film also sports the first screen appearances of Rondo Hatton as The Creeper. We talk a good deal about the way the plot unfolds and take note of how the screenplay seems to be digging into a Holmes character flaw to drive the story. Of course, there are the usual odd asides including a Tolkien reference that is quite out of place and a short debate about the correct size of a Yamaka or skullcap. We try to use our meager deductive reasoning skills but we tend to be more Watson than Holmes. Thank you for listening to the show and thebloodypit@gmail.com is the place to send any thoughts. Stay warm and we'll be back soon.

It's a monster mash on this fresh from the grave episode of DEATH BY DVD all about FRANKY AND HIS PALS, directed by Gerald Cormier. What is Franky And His Pals, you ask? Well, let us copy and paste the write up from the official Severinfilms.com website where this movie is available to purchase, because we are to lazy to write something up ourselves and theirs is way better : From the deepest, darkest depths of the shot-on-video vaults… Hidden from view for 30 years… All your favorite movie monsters are back… And they're ready to party like it's 1990! Franky, Drak, Wolfy, Mummy and Humper – the horny hunchback – descend on the tiny mining town of French Gulch in search of lost gold, but it's Halloween Night, and the monsters soon find themselves caught up in the debaucherous festivities of the local townsfolk. Will Franky and His Pals find the gold? Will they learn the ways of love? Will Drak quench his thirst for human blood? Just how explosive is Franky's flatulence? What's that Mad Scientist tinkering on out in his barn? What the hell is a pee-pee? And does any of it really matter? Directed by veteran grindhouse and adult film producer Gerald Cormier (TERROR CIRCUS a.k.a. BARN OF THE NAKED DEAD, 101 ACTS OF LOVE) and seldom-seen beyond the shelves of small-town video shops, this bizarro monster-comedy is finally being resurrected on DVD and is positively exploding with spooky Special Features! And since I copy and pasted all that from Severin, the least I can do is also add the link so you can buy the movie : TAP HERE FOR THE MOVIEDive into the monster mash with your host Harry-Scott Sullivan and kick back and relax with this hoot and an additional hollar of an episode. Rondo Hatton was a reporter/sportswriter in Tampa, Florida but he had a problem. He suffered from the awful effects of acromegaly, which gave him unique facial features. He used his strange appearance to make a career in Hollywood. His films include The Pearl of Death, The Jungle Captive, The Spider Woman Strikes Back, House of Horrors, and The Brute Man.

On this spooky season edition of Parallax Views, documentarian Joe O'Connell joins us to discuss his latest feature, RONDO AND BOB, about the parallel lives of Robert A. Burns, the behind-the-scenes art force behind such cult classic horror movies as Tober Hooper's THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, Stuart Gordon's RE-ANIMATOR, Joe Dante's THE HOWLING, and Wes Craven's THE HILLS HAVE EYES, and Rondo Hatton, an acromelgaly-afflicted journalist of the early 20th century who made his way to Hollywood to become Tinsel Town's 1940s equivalent to monster movie icon Boris Karloff. Before getting into RONDO AND BOB, however, Joe and I discuss his previous documentary DANGER MAN. Said film focused on the life and times of stuntman Gary Kent, who was involved with a plethora of B-movie and independent films in the 1960s and 1970s. Kent also is one of the stuntmen upon which Brad Pitt's character in Quentin Tarantino's ONCE UPON TIME IN HOLLYWOOD was based. Specifically, the fact that Gary Kent had an encounter with Charles Manson while filming a movie on Spahn Ranch (where the Manson Family were living before the Tate/LaBianca murders) became a plot point in the aforementioned Tarantino feature. We then delve into the stories of Bob Burns and Rondo Hatton, including the similarities and differences in their lives. Burns was someone who appeared normal on the outside but was an eccentric in life and also felt unlovable. Rondo, most known for his appearances as "The Creeper" in films like the Sherlock Holmes caper PEARL OF DEATH, HOUSE OF HORRORS, and THE BRUTE MAN, appeared odd on the outside but was a normal, affable, and much loved man in his every day life. What can we learn from the lives of these two creative individuals who lived life on their on terms? That's the question in this fascinating edition of Parallax Views. Among the topics discussed: - The career of Gary Kent, who went to Hollywood with no experience but grew to become a long-running stuntman in Hollywood who often worked on the independent/grindhouse/drive-in movie circuit productions of Sam Sherman, Al Adamson, Don Jones, and Ray Dennis Steckler; his credits include movies like Schoolgirls in Chains, Bubba Ho-Tep, Psych-Out, Hell's Bloody Devils, Satan's Sadists, the Bruce Willis vehicle Color of Night, and Monte Hellman's Ride in the Whirlwind; how the documentary Danger God came together; the challenges of stunt work; Gary Kent's role in Rondo and Bob - The strange and fantastic lives of Bob Burns and Rondo Hatton; Rondo's early life, involvement with WWI, and his career in Hollywood; Bob's eccentric personality and loneliness; the continued fandom around Bob's work; Bob's acting as serial killing drifter Henry Lee Lucas in Confessions of a Serial Killer; Bob's movies Mongrel (with Hollywood star Aldo Ray) and his unreleased comedy Scream Test; Bob's home-made pinball machined based on the adult movie comedy Deep Throat with Linda Lovelace; the ways in which Rondo and Bob's lives mirror each other and the tragedies in their lives; Bob Burns, Tobe Hooper, and the University of Texas tower shooting - The influence of the George Lazenby/James Bond 007 documentary Becoming Bond on Rondo and Bob; the half-documentary/half-documentary approach of Rondo and Bob And much, much more!

TVC 544.3: An encore presentation of our March 2019 conversation with Will Ryan, Nick Santa Maria and Michael Schlesinger. Will and Ryan are the stars, and Mike is the writer, producer and director, of The Misadventures of Biffle and Shooster—the Rondo Award-nominated DVD collection of 1930s-style comedies that pay homage to The Three Stooges, Abbott and Costello, Laurel and Hardy and other vintage comedy teams from the Golden Era of Hollywood. The Biffle and Shooster shorts were filmed over a five-year period in the early 2010s, yet they look and sound as if they were actually unearthed from the 1930s. Want to advertise/sponsor our show? Struggling sculptor Marcel De Lange (Martin Kosleck) is depressed about events in his life, and decides to commit suicide. Just as he's about to kill himself, he sees a madman, known as "The Creeper" (Rondo Hatton), in the process of drowning, and saves him. Taking the disfigured man into his care, he makes him the subject of his next sculpture and calls it his best creation. When critics denigrate Marcel's work, he has the Creeper start killing them. Marcel becomes obsessed with Joan, a beautiful female reporter who believes the deaths are related. When Marcel invites her over and she sees Marcel's sculpture of The Creeper, she suspects that Marcel knows the killer. Later, Marcel decides that Joan knows too much and commands The Creeper to kill her. The Creeper is reluctant to do, however, when he discovers that Marcel plans to turn him over to the police. The Creeper kills Marcel, and is about to kill Joan when he is shot by the police.

Lee and Daniel start an extended series looking into film adaptations of Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories. First up, they check out two examples from the 14-film series, starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, that one could argue really captured the imagination of the general movie-going public and cemented Holmes and his stories as a solid well to keep going back to for film adaptation ever since. The two films are "The Hound of the Baskervilles" (1939) & "The Pearl of Death" (1944). Episode 039 - Rondo Hatton: The Pearl of Death (1944) / House of Horrors (1946) / The Brute Man (1946)     NOTES, SOURCES, & FURTHER READING For an overview of Universal Horror in general, the bible remains Tom Weaver, Michael Brunas, and John Brunas’ Universal Horrors: The Studio’s Classic Films, 1931-1946 (second edition, McFarland & Company, Inc., 2007) For more on the workings of Universal during the Classical Hollywood era, we recommend chapters 1, 6, 13, 18, and 23 of Thomas Schatz’s The Genius of the System: Hollywood Filmmaking in the Studio Era (1988) Very few scholars have devoted much ink to Rondo Hatton over the years.  Aside from the Weaver/Brunas/Brunas tome, our main source of information on the reluctant thespian has been Cory Legassic’s ‘“The Perfect Neanderthal Man”: Rondo Hatton as The Creeper and the Cultural Economy of 1940s B-Films’ in Recovering 1940s Horror Cinema: Traces of a Lost Decade (Lexington Books, 2015). For more on Martin Kosleck, consult Harry M. Benshoff’s Monsters in the Closet: Homosexuality and the horror film (Manchester University Press, 1997).  There’s not much there, but the quality of the information surpasses its brevity. James O’Neill’s Terror on Tape (Billboard Books, 1994) includes capsule reviews of The Pearl of Death and The Brute Man, but inexplicably omits House of Horrors despite mentioning it in the other reviews. John Stanley’s Creature Features: The Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Movie Guide (updated edition, Berkley Boulevard, 2000) includes capsule reviews of all three Creeper films discussed in this episode.   Intro Music: The Pearl of Death Main Titles by Paul Sawtell Outro Music: The Bute Man Main Titles
