Nicholas McCarthy was born in the 1990s without a right hand. Paul Wittgenstein lost his in World War I—and then left behind a musical treasure trove that would change Nicholas' life. Listen to our collaboration with the hit podcast Snap Judgement.
“I kept seeing pieces with this name at the top… I wasn't looking for him, he was almost looking for me.” This week on Snap, Nicholas McCarthy immerses himself in left-hand only piano compositions and gets lost in the world of Wittgenstein. Huge thanks to, Nicholas McCarthy, for sharing his story with Snap! Nicholas is the first and only left-hand alone pianist to have graduated from London's Royal College of Music in it's 140 year history. He's since gone on to tour internationally and has recorded two studio albums. Learn more about his career and music on his website or follow him on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. This story was a collaboration with our friends Ilena Peng and Brendan Spiegel at Narratively. Welcome back to Iron Sights After Dark! In this episode, I sat down with recently retired cop Nicholas McCarthy who stopped by the studio to share his story for the first time since he took medical leave back in 2021. McCarthy talks about growing up in a Law Enforcement family and befriending his uncle who spent most of his life behind bars. There were two options for Nick: Join Law Enforcement or run the other way. Nick shares that the desire to be a K9 handler motivated him to be a standout cop and after 5 years on the job he was in a position to do exactly that. Without any McCarthy family handouts, Nick put in the work and established himself patrolling the streets of the Bay Area. We've all heard it...If you're looking for trouble - chances are you're going to find it. Nick's relentlessness and passion for catching "The Bad Guy" got him in quite a few really bad situations that he talks about on this show. After leaving his agency over a year ago after an officer involved shooting, McCarthy wasn't able to openly share his career and/or side of the story until now. His retirement papers have been signed and he chose to share his side of the story with the world. Regardless of what the media and/or news has covered, Nick has been: sued, investigated & interviewed by Law Enforcement countless times and his actions and that of his fellow officers have been justified by the law. The goal of this podcast was to listen and share his story publicly for the first time - what can we as a community learn from his life and choices so that we can get better and improve as a whole?Timestamps:00:00 Welcoming Nick To The Show01:44 The Law Enforcement Family03:53 School vs. The Work Force05:36 The Goal of Being A K9 Handler14:43 Policing Under The Shadow of Legends20:37 Dope, Guns & Working The Streets22:45 The Proactive Cop26:43 Examples of Leadership in Law Enforcement34:40 Fast Forward 5 Years36:55 Going All In On K9 Training44:26 Being A Successful K9 Handler46:37 The Full Story of Getting A K9 Dog54:04 How Tike (The K9) Got His Name57:51 Working The Streets As A K9 Handler1:08:27 Shit That Went Bad...Really Bad1:17:37 Saving A Woman's Life1:23:45 Leading Up To The Event That Changed Everything1:26:30 The Shooting That Ended Nick's Career1:56:43 The Aftermath of Being Shot & Being Involved2:05:31 The Media Went Crazy2:10:50 Being Put On Administrative Leave2:21:37 The Investigation That Follows2:30:21 Battling Retirement & CA Workers Comp2:45:14 Surviving Depression & Darkness2:49:50 What's Next For NickSponsors by Red Dot Fitness Online Training Programs:Red Dot Fitness Training Programs: https://www.rdftrainonline.comOnline membership (Full Access To All Programs & Virtual Coaching):https://www.reddotfitness.net/online-membershipVirtual Coaching:https://www.reddotfitness.net/virtual-coachingSelf-Guided Programs:https://www.reddotfitness.net/Self-Guided-Programs1Connect With Us:Website - https://ironsightspodcast.com/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/ironsightspodcast/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/irons
Marin County, 1978. In this graphic novel, teens Clara and Wendy get high one night alone at home. Before the night ends, they've disappeared — until five months later, when Clara is found, disheveled, but alive, in Death Valley National Park. From Clara's mysterious reappearance in Death Valley, Disciplescuts to the present day, where stories of "The California Cult" and its enigmatic — and never-caught — leader, Billy Joe, are as much a part of the popular culture as the Manson Family. Clara, the lone survivor of the cult, has adopted a new identity to protect her and her daughter, Wren. And she mostly does, until one night when the past and present horrifically collide. Disciples is a seamless collaboration between cartoonist Ben Marra and filmmakers David Birke and Nicholas McCarthy. Birke and McCarthy's script celebrates and reinvents a cult film ethos. It combines the best of 1970s era eerie-thriller-terror movies in a fresh and revelatory way, similar to how Marra has continued/reinvented the work of Abel Ferrara and George Cosmatos in graphic novels like Night Business. Join us for this conversation between the authors, moderated by Nat Freeman, recorded live on our Crowdcast channel on Tuesday, May 31. _______________________________________________ Produced by Nat Freeman, Lance Morgan, & Michael Kowaleski. Theme: "I Love All My Friends," an unreleased demo by Fragile Gang. Visit https://www.skylightbooks.com/event for future offerings from the Skylight Books Events team.

The TPP team had the privilege of interviewing Mr. Nicholas McCarthy – One-handed International Concert Pianist, Yamaha Artist, and Motivational Speaker — for our season 2 finale episode! Born without a right hand, Mr. McCarthy was told he would never succeed as a concert pianist, yet he refused to be discouraged and went on to study at one of the world's most prestigious music schools, the Royal College of Music in London where he became the first one-handed pianist to graduate in its 135-year history. Mr. McCarthy has performed extensively in the UK as well as internationally. His concert performances, recordings, and press coverage have drawn critical acclaim, and he continues to encourage young people through his work in music education. As a speaker, Mr. McCarthy has created and delivered high-impact keynote talks for the world's most dynamic brands. He has helped companies motivate their workforce, improving profitability and loyalty by sharing his truly unique and inspiring story and teaching them how to operate at a level of peak performance. During the interview, Nicholas shared stories: ✅ How he beat the odds to be accepted by the RCM ✅ His incredible international career as a concert pianist ✅ The history of the left-hand piano literature ✅ The source of his positive mindset [Nicholas McCarthy]

2020 Recap episode featuring two incredible performers from the UK. Nicholas McCarthy & Kelly Mathieson www.anygivenrunway.com
The new film, BODY CAM (2020), was oddly released only weeks earlier than the unrest that has hit the United States. The film functions as a commentary on illegal behavior by police officers after an arrest goes unfortunately wrong. The movie follows the ghost story scenario that became somewhat standard with THE CHANGLING (1980). The movie asks the basic question “Is the ghost really malevolent or is it trying to tell those it haunts something?” Renee (played by Mary J. Blige) is a police officer in a small city in Louisiana. She recently is reinstated after having been suspended for breaking police procedure. When a fellow officer is gruesomely murdered during what was a routine traffic stop, she begins to follow puzzle pieces that lead to the prior death of a young black youth. Soon her discoveries may put her in danger from what may be a supernatural presence. The movie is receiving mixed reviews though its Rottentomato score usually is solid for independent horror/thriller films. Nicholas McCarthy, writer and director of such films as THE PACT (2012) and THE PRODIGY (2019), is the screenwriter for this film that is directed by newcomer Malik Vitthal. Dark Discussions takes a look at this movie and gives their thoughts.

2019 was the hottest and driest year on record in Australia. The Indian Ocean Dipole and the Southern Annular Mode weather systems, plus existing drought conditions, all primed the continent for the horrific fire season currently raging in the east and south east of the country. Climate scientist at the University of New South Wales Sarah Perkins-Kirkpatrick is in no doubt global warming played a role in making these the worst fires in recent history. Making matters even worse is that the ferocity of the bush-fires is creating its own weather. Nicholas McCarthy at the University of Queensland studies fire-induced weather and he explains how this can help spread the fires further. January is also Veganuary, a chance for you to try being vegan for 31 days. The reasons for giving up animal products in your diet are varied, from reducing your carbon footprint to not eating animals and getting healthy. Reporter Geoff Marsh is interested in the evidence in favour for and against a vegan diet. Filmmaker Nicholas McCarthy (THE PACT, AT THE DEVIL'S DOOR) shares his career journey with Adam, Joe, and Arwen and discusses his new “killer kid” film THE PRODIGY (opening in US theaters this Friday). From falling in love with Creature Double Feature as a kid… to making short films … to an in-depth nerd-out about aspect ratios… to working with child actors who are performing adult material … this is exactly the kind of filmmaker on filmmaker conversation that you listen to THE MOVIE CRYPT for. Dr. Arwen weighs in with advice on sales agents and when (if ever) it's ok to call it quits on a project in her “Hollywood Therapy” segment, Nicholas answers our beloved Crypt Keepers' “Viewer Mail” questions, and Adam painfully accepts that it's time to retire the Aerosmith shirt he's worn since High School. Merry Christmas! From all of us at the Real Brian Show, a very Merry Christmas! In this farewell-to-2016 installment of the podcast, we bring you yet more Star Wars, plenty of talk about Christmas, and an amazing conversation with Nicholas McCarthy about his experiences as a concert pianist. In This Episode Buddy the Elf pops in! Christmas & Star Wars with Martin Donison Nicholas McCarthy has a unique handicap for a concert pianist...and yet, WOW! Wear That Cookie Well Nicholas McCarthy was born without his right hand, but he was also born with an extraordinary aptitude for piano. If that combination doesn't make sense, you will be astounded by the interview in this week's episode of The Real Brian Show. Brian and Nicholas dig in to the prejudice produced by the inherent handicap having only one hand presents and how the challenges he faced as a young person grew him into exactly who he needed to be as an adult. More than simply rising to the occasion, or facing adversity head-on, Nicholas's story is one of those rare and unique, and totally authentic, tributes to a calling deep within the human spirit. We can each have a strong desire to do or to be something, but facing the word "No" or experiencing rejection can be a show stopper. Nicholas's skills tickling ivory were too great to allow any form of rejection to get in his way, and it is incredibly inspiring. The Noise of Negativity Negativity makes a lot of noise. Nicholas and Brian talk about this noise and how it can seem to drown out everything else around you. No matter how many people tell you something positive, the negatives are what seem to make the most noise. This manifests in a lot of ways. After the 2016 presidential election, for example, the negativity around the results was extremely loud and prolonged. All I remember from the first couple days after the election are the riots. A couple years ago, on the other side of this, Brian and I interviewed Greg Weisman (known for his work on comic-book and animated television series). He brought up the excellent point that when reading reviews about his own work, he can recite the negative reviews verbatim, and yet recall very little from the positive reviews. Constructive criticism is my bread and butter. The only way to grow and improve is to keep at what you love doing and use the input from others to make adjustments as necessary. But, in the words of my one of my favorite authors, "few of us really have the heart to be in love without encouragement." It is hard to love anyone, or anything, without the encouragement to do so. While it's useful to have people in our lives who tell us the truth, in a more critical way, it is equally important to receive positive feedback. Even more importantly, it is important to listen to and trust positive feedback. If you aren't getting any positive reinforcement for your endeavor, don't give up yet - make some adjustments. Try a new audience. As for feedback differently. Try to get to the root of why you're surrounded by negativity. Don't let the noise overwhelm you, try to drown it out with a healthy balance of input from the opposing force. Links Join The Real Brian Show Facebook Community! Probabilistically speaking, if you were born without your right hand, what are the odds that you would become a world-class concert pianist? You might be mistaken (and forgiven) for assuming that the chances would be relatively low. However, that's perhaps because you have not heard of my guest on this week's episode. Meet Nicholas McCarthy. Nicholas is a world-class concert pianist who has played all over the globe. He was born without his right hand. He was the first left-hand only graduate of the prestigious Royal College of Music in London. He has played alongside Coldplay at the opening ceremony for the 2012 Paralympic games, has a wonderful solo album, was a guest presenter at the BBC Proms, is a radio host and will soon launch his own podcast called "Of Note". He has also appeared on several prominent podcasts, including the Tim Ferris Show. Nicholas is hugely inspirational. In addition to this however (and as usual as this show's USP), I apply a risk lens to Nicholas' story and it provides some wonderful insights into the question: "how can you turn the odds of something you want to achieve to your favour?" We cover loads of great stuff in this incredible conversation: Nicholas' background growing and how he got interested in the piano (and some great insights on parenting here); The challenges that he faced in studying the piano at a world-class level (there were several!) Left-hand repertoire, the style of playing in which Nicholas specialises; The balance between talent and diligent practice; Risk and risk-taking; Much, much more I am delighted to bring this conversation to you and I hope you check out Nicholas' work. Nicholas McCarthy (@NMcCarthyPiano) was born in 1989 without his right hand and only started to play the piano at the age of 14. He was told he would never succeed as a concert pianist. Fortunately, the doubters were wrong. His graduation from the prestigious Royal College of Music in London in 2012 appeared in press around the world, as he became the only one-handed pianist to graduate from the Royal College of Music in its 130-year history. Nicholas has now performed extensively throughout the world, including the U.K., U.S., South Africa, South Korea, Japan, Malta, and Kazakhstan. He has also played alongside Coldplay and given a rendition of the Paralympic Anthem in front of an audience of 86,000 people and half a billion worldwide viewers. His first album, entitled Solo (Warner Music) features 17 stunning pieces of left-hand repertoire spanning three centuries and has been released around the world to great acclaim. In early February, composer & musician Ronen Landa spoke to KQEK.com about his latest scores: the comedy Cavemen(2013), and Home (2014), his second feature film score (after The Pact) for horror director Nicholas McCarthy. Landa’s skills extend to scoring comedies, dramas, documentaries, and horror, but one of his major influences remains Ennio Morricone, whose work with the famed Gruppo di improvvisazione nuova consonanza inspired the more experimental aspects of Home. Songs and two score cues from Cavemen are available from Lakeshore Records, whereas Landa’s Home will be released later this year. His prior score for director McCarthy, The Pact, is available from Moviescore Media. Special thanks to Ronen Landa for his time, and Beth Krakower at CineMedia Promotions. The right hand may be the belle of the ball but the left hand is no dowdy Cinderella. The left hand is a fundamental part of piano music - literally, the fundamental is the root part of every note on the piano. A strong left hand is crucial to successfully playing Bach, but what motivates a pianist to tackle the fiendish work of Godowsky who transcribed the already difficult Chopin preludes for the left hand alone? For some, such as Nicholas McCarthy who was born without his right hand, left-handed repertoire is the only option.
