For Becky Elder, education entrepreneurship is nothing new. In 1963, her parents founded a private school in Wichita, Kansas. Becky then homeschooled her own children even before the practice was legally recognized. In 1993, she helped to launch Northfield School of the Liberal Arts as a small, classically-oriented school for approximately 50 middle and high school students in Wichita. Dalena Wallace is a next-generation education entrepreneur, following in Becky's footsteps. She is a homeschool mom of 6 children ages 8-15 who lives in a small rural community about an hour outside of Wichita. Dalena has been running a popular homeschool co-op for several years and received a microgrant from the VELA Education Fund which helped to connect her to other local education entrepreneurs in the greater Wichita area, including Becky. Dalena and Becky, along with some of the other Wichita education entrepreneurs I have had on the podcast, created the group WISE - Wichita Innovative Schools and Educators— to support the growth and success of more microschools, low-cost private schools, learning pods, homeschool collaboratives, and other innovative K-12 education models. Check out my case study of education entrepreneurship in Wichita! Sign up for my free, weekly email newsletter on education trends at fee.org/liberated.
On this episode of What's Up with Mike McShane, Dalena Wallace, a homeschooling mom of six, talks about AIM education which involves her co-op of homeschooling parents and operating a hybrid microschool.

On this episode we had the pleasure of talking to Frank Dalena who is a former D1 football player at Fresno State, trained with the Olympic Bobsledding team, onion farmer and current host of the Bring The Juice podcast. We talked about positivity, mindset, sports, podcasting, being a better man and much more. "High level athletes leverage athletic ability and an elite mindset to make it to the top. Frank Dalena sits down the athletes we watch on TV, draft to our fantasy teams and cheer for in big games to discuss how that same elite mindset has helped them in business, investing, helping their community, and chasing greatness as a human. Tune in Thursday mornings to hear how today's high level athletes Bring The Juice." Walked-On to his Division 1 hometown team Fresno State and played his 5 years of football before moving to Park City, Utah to chase a new Olympic venture. Frank was training with with Team USA as a skeleton athlete for two years and then discovered after a race he had a large blood clot in his leg, limiting him from competition. Going from competing with world class athletes everyday to normal life outside of sports was tough, but finding a way to take that same attention to detail in sports and applying it to life was something Frank was trying to figure out. That is when the Bring The Juice podcast was born. Jennifer Propeller, 3 tracks deep and a further EP in the wings. They are the self-styled dreamy end of indie-alternative melancholia. And they are a unanimous success here. It's the combination of dreamy guitars and Dalena's voice that really make Jennifer Propeller stand out. Luckily for us, we've also managed to have a sneak preview of some of their upcoming work. We can't share that with you, our listeners, just yet, so please be patient. However, the moment that JP are ready to allow release we shall be amongst the first to broadcast this excellent new material. Secondly, we have unreleased music from an unsigned and untitled band. Who'd have thought it? Two chaps in the gestation period of their new band have submitted some tunes. We've listened through the lot and offer our opinion on what we consider to be the best. You'd think that these two alone, nestled in the middle of Tobin's box-ticking bookend, would be more than enough. No. We are heading quickly into the final trimester of Season II and so we are cramming. Jamie excels this week, surpassing even his own high standards. Ida Mae are Jamie's choice which sets the scene for our Listener Recommendation this week. Julian has been in touch and we get him on the line to introduce his choice. Think you can do better? OK, we're all ears - get in touch.

Seriously, thank you to all of our emergency responders, and the dispatchers that work with the public right now. Dalena Garcia is my mom. She's been actively working on writing sort stories for some time now, and has been looking at becoming a voice actor. Specifically for reading books. So make sure you keep an ear out for her in the future. And of course James Waldon. Who I got to read a story, because I slipped it into the scripts for my other show, Now Hear This Canby. And James has the greatest voice in the entire world. Thank you James. The rest of our readers come from the Cast of Fables of Refuge, Fables on YouTube. Carter Michael, Jess Ayers, Lora Dailey, and the Dapper DM himself Jarrett Sullivan all came to play with us this Halloween. And of course the return of friend of the show Aly Fitzgerald. Aly really took the challenge and ran with it. She wrote a story, then did my job of producing a great piece for us. She really did a MUCH better job than I did, in my humble opinion. The whole cast of the show, Fables, did an outstanding job. From Lora Dailey going out of her way to perfect a French accent for a story, to Jess Ayers reading so well, I got literal goosebumps while listening. From Jarret hitting the tone of his story perfectly to Carter Michael making me feel bad for a freaking zombie. Hats off to this amazing cast of actors. @loradailey @jessnextdoor @jarrettsullivan @carterhmichael @_alyfitzgerald If you want to show them some love and support, please go check out their amazing show Fables of Refuge on YouTube. This is the third installment in a special series of conversations with fellow authors of the recently published cookbook and anthology, "The New Filipino Kitchen" (available on Amazon) that features Filipino cooks, writers, and thinkers all across the globe. We take a peek into how they view the world and their cuisine. For this “Halfsies” edition (all 3 of us are of mixed heritage, me being Chinese-Filipino and Alexa and Dalena being half Caucasian), we feature: - Alexa Alfaro (for another round!), an Alaska-born Milwaukeean who, after a 10-week trip to the Philippines, was inspired to open her city’s first Filipino Food Truck “Meat on the Street” with her younger brother in 2014. This involved dropping out of her Engineering degree but weeks from graduation. Since then, the pair have opened a brick-and-mortar slinging their famous BBQ sticks and pork adobo to the masses. - Dalena Benavente, born and raised as one of the only Filipinas in the Southern state of Tennessee. She has worked as a recipe developer and product tester for Kraft, filmed with Paula Deen, and hosted numerous cooking segments on a variety of radio and TV channels. She is also an accomplished author with her memoir “Asian Girl in a Souther World”. We talk about: - The realities of straddling racial and cultural lines and what it’s like to go “back home” to the Philippines. - The ways we balance being relatable to our many communities without diluting who we are. - Balancing the expansion of your business while serving your Home Team and your "Day Ones”. - Balancing affordability/access with charging what you think you’re worth. - Staying sane be it in the Food Truck business or trying to balance a day job with the side hustle. There’s a lot of nuance in these conversations that I think often gets overlooked in favor of simpler narratives so if you’re also a Halfsie or find yourself straddling multiple worlds, “jobs”, and identities, give this episode a listen. ---- For more information including notes to the show, please visit hiddenapron.com/podcast.

Dr. Taylor is an assistant professor at the University of Central Florida. She’s also the Center for Play Therapy Training and Research Director, as well as the Play Therapy Certificate coordinator. She earned her graduate degrees from the University of North Texas. She learned from many of the leaders in the Play Therapy world. Dr. Taylor is trained in Adlerian Play Therapy developed in the early 1990’s by Terry Kottman, Ph.D., Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor, NCC, LMHC Adlerian’s belief is that people’s behavior is purposeful and goal-directed. Their early childhood experiences influence their behavior, as well as how they view themselves, others and their world. 4 Phases of Adlerian Play Therapy (1) Relationship Building – This phase of the therapy is non-directive and supports safety in the play room. By creating a shared power, the client can really feel like a significant person in their world. This phase supports building trust within the child. (2) Investigating the Lifestyle – In this phase, the therapist becomes more directive in their work. A focus is placed on how they view themselves, others, and the world. There are a lot of things to take into consideration for the client, especially information on their personality, how do they feel like they matter in the world. (3) Gaining Insight – At this point in the therapeutic process, the therapist has a really good idea how the child is viewing themselves, others and world. The treatment plan is developed after phase 2, once the therapist has a good idea of who the child is and how they view the world. (4) Reorientation –In this phase, the therapist teaches the children skillsets through role play, family work, and more. One of the goals is to directly support their ability to generalize the skills in different settings to support their self-efficacy. The therapist looks for signs that the child is ready to move into each phase. It’s important to truly understand the child’s lifestyle. These 3 things are across each of the categories in the lifestyle: Goals for Change Strategies Progress Parent consultation is an important component of Adlerian Play therapy. Half of the session is spent with the child and ½ of the session is spent with the parent or every other session with parent then with child is scheduled. During the therapy, the parent is also following the 4 phases. During the parent consultation, how the parent is viewing the world is explored since it greatly influences their parenting approach. During the parent consultation, the parent learns many of the same skills as the child, so that they can respond to the child in a different way that is supportive of the treatment plan for the child. Dr. Taylor highly recommends reading Partners in Play by Terry Kottman 3rd Edtion. Crucial C’s of Adlerian Play Therapy Courage Connect Capable Count It’s important for each therapist to choose a theory that aligns with how you also view the world to foster authenticity of delivery of services. The relationship is the most critical element of the therapy. http://education.ucf.edu/playtherapy/ https://www.eventbrite.com/e/ucf-center-for-play-therapy-research-and-training-first-annual-play-therapy-conference-partners-in-registration-26582158953 https://playtherapycommunity.simplero.com/page/73863-free-download-tips-for-supporting-grieving-children https://www.facebook.com/PLAYTHERAPYCOMMUNITY/ https://www.facebook.com/groups/parentingintherain/ https://www.facebook.com/groups/1130971706932394/ https://www.facebook.com/groups/schoolcounselors/ https://www.facebook.com/counselinginbrevard/ www.counselinginbrevard.com www.playtherapycommunity.com www.parentingintherain.com www.jackieflynnconsulting.com https://twitter.com/jackieflynnrpt
