Lesbian Vampires embody many things - beauty, ruthlessness, man-hating and the lustful intensity of a thousand Scorpios. They also have killer wardrobes (pun intended). Torie and Maggie take their first bite into gratuitous sexploitation marred by a male victim's confusingly cringeworthy kissing in VAMPYRES (1974). They witness the most concentrated representation of Power Scorpio energy in cinema history with VAMPYROS LESBOS (1971) and low-key fetishes for True Crime in DAUGHTERS OF DARKNESS (1971).

Newlywed couple Stefan and Valerie are traveling across Europe by train, bound for Belgium then England, where they are to meet Stefan's mother. But when the train makes an unexpected stop, the couple decide to hang out for a while in a seaside hotel in the town of Ostend. Fortunately, It's winter, so they have their pick of suites, but why is Stefan so hesitant to call his Mother to tell her he and Valerie are married? And who is this new visitor, one Countess Elizabeth Bathory and her secretary Ilona? Well, whoever they are, they soon begin to fixate on the newlyweds. Meanwhile, a series of grisly murders of young women are taking place in neighboring towns, and on a leisurely trip to Bruges, Stefan shows a strange interest in a murder that's just taken place. What do Elizabeth and Ilona have to do with the murders, and why are they so determined to befriend Stefan and Valerie? And perhaps most mysterious, why do the hotel concierge and a retired policeman think Elizabeth looks exactly like someone they knew 40 years ago? Not Your Final Girl is returning to the vampire beat, this time with the expert perspective of our guest Annie Rose Malamet, film writer and host of the excellent podcast Girls, Guts, & Giallo. Get ready for a retrospective of lesbian bloodsuckers, revolving around transgressive Universal monster flick Dracula's Daughter (1936), and Harry Kümel's erotically charged Daughters of Darkness (1971). Topics include lesbians in the time of the Hays Code, sadomasochism, spunky secretaries and their boring het love interests, fucked up shit we watched in French class, the Carmilla/Elizabeth Bathory dynamic, over reliance on TV Tropes, the use of red outerwear in vampire stories, and of course, Gowns. We had so much fun and learned a lot making this episode! If you're looking for more lesbian vampire movies to sink your teeth into after these, we've got you there too. Fill up a chalice of whatever vampiric beverage you prefer (including blood - we don't judge) and let's get into it. Daughters of Darkness features a stunning cover and four authors; Stephanie Ellis, Alyson Faye, Theresa Derwin, Ruschelle Dillon. Plus! At the end of the video I have an update on the grand giveaway happening at @darkbetweenpages : https://youtu.be/RUZiWU7V8ro Conjure a copy of Daughters of Darkness: https://amzn.to/39izht4 00:00 - Introduction 4:01 - Francois Vaillancourt 4:39 - Theresa Derwin 5:33 - Ruschelle Dillon 6:19 - Stephanie Ellis, 7:44 - Alyson Faye 9:53 - The Giveaway! The last time I read a book that I can recall that involved more than one author as a short story collection was Triage featuring Jack Ketchum Edward Lee and Richard Laymon. it was fantastic and I don't have a copy anymore - had I known then what I know now I'd have hung onto it as it is hard to come by. Daughters of Darkness, on the other hand, is a fresh release that came out in February of this year so 2021 and it came out in the very middle of women in horror month, so I'm a little behind on my review. This was a graciously gifted review copy from Ruschelle Dillon, one of the authors featured here and who you may recall from a previous new releases video with her book of the stain and she had also equally graciously interviewed me for the horror tree 2 years ago. Also featured in this book are Stephanie Ellis, Alyson Faye, and Theresa Derwin. So, we have a group of four women writers who specialize in horror of varying kinds in one book. From the back cover: A quartet of established female horror writers from both sides of the Atlantic have joined supernatural forces to bring you - Daughters of Darkness - a publication from the women-run indie press Black Angel. These stories will take you across the centuries, from Whitechapel to New Orleans, from dark humour to Gothic, weaving the weird with the macabre. Within these pages, meet the myriad monsters these female writers have conjured, letting them loose to roam and cast long shadows. The gorgeous cover as mentioned I absolutely adore and it was designed by Francois Vaillancourt who is Canadian and you may recognize from many other books covers an author's if you're out there he often designs covers and then has them up for commission beautiful at work and of course on my list of things to achieve the cover by Francois Vallencourt. A fantastic collection that I do recommend if you are not familiar with these authors or just want to line your shelf with some really nice dark female offerings. I hope to see more of this being that this could be an annual tradition it would be really cool, or just more collections with more than one story by each author. I'd be very interested in collections like that as opposed to the traditional anthology. This week, Chaos and Carnage invite you to join them for a quiet drink with the blood countess in this 70s lesbian vampire surprise, Daughters of Darkness. This is a Chaos pick, and Chaos freely admits to discovering this movie through Joe Bob Briggs, who is amazing. #joebobbriggs #horrorhosts #ghoulardiCLE (http://www.theghoulardifest.com/) **Warning! There is full frontal nekkidness of both kinds in this movie, if you go look it up on Shudder. I mean, that might be more of a 'Guess what?!' to you instead of a Warning, but if so please swap them out and procede with our compliments. Everyone else, you have been warned.
