EPISODE 76 - “MEMORABLE OSCAR SPEECHES OF THE GOLDEN ERA OF HOLLYWOOD” - 2/24/2025 Winning an Oscar is a dream for most people who work in Hollywood. But you can't just win the Oscar, you have to have a good speech once your name is called and you head to the podium. There have been some great ones — OLIVIA COLEMAN's funny and cheeky speech hit the right tone and who can forget JACK PALANCE's one-arm push-ups or CUBA GOODING's exuberance? There have also been some bad ones — don't we all still cringe a little at SALLY FIELDS' “You like me” speech? As we prepare to celebrate the 97th annual Academy Award ceremony, Steve and Nan look back on some of their favorite Oscar speeches and why they resonate. So put on your tux, don the gown and jewels, pop the champagne, and join us for a fun talk about … well, people talking.  SHOW NOTES:  Sources: “Five Times The Oscars Made History,” January 20, 2017, www.nyfa.edu; “Hollywood History: How World War II Forced the Academy to Rethink the 1942 Oscars,” April 16, 2021, Entertainment Weekly; “Charlie Chaplin vs. America Explores the Accusations that Sent a Star Into Exile,” October 24, 2023, byTerry Gross, www.npr.com; “The Most Memorable Oscar Speeches in Oscar History,” March 6, 2024, by Shannon Carlin, www.time.com;   Wikipedia.com; TCM.com; IMDBPro.com; www.Oscars.org; Movies Mentioned:  Stella Dallas (1938), starring Barbara Stanwyck, John Boles, Anne Shirley, & Alan Hale; Gone With The Wind (1939), starring Vivian Leigh, Clark Gable, Olivia de Havilland, Leslie Howard, Hattie McDaniel, Butterfly McQueen, Thomas Mitchell, & Barbara O'Neil; How Green Was My Valley (1941), starring Walter Pidgeon, Maureen O'Hara, & Donald Crisp; Sergeant York (1941), starring Gary Cooper, Joan Leslie, & Walter Brennan;  The Devil and Miss Jones (1941), staring Jean Arthur Robert Cummings, & Charle Coburn; Here Comes Mr. Jordan (1941), starring Robert Montgomery, Claude Rains, & Evelyn Keyes; Ball of Fire (1942), starring Barbara Stanwyck & Cary Cooper; Double Indemnity (1944), starring Barbara Stanwyck, Fred MacMurray & Edward G Robinson; Key Largo (1948); starring Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Edward G Robinson, Claire Trevor, & Lionel Barrymore; All The King's Men (1948), starring Broderick Crawford, John Ireland, Joanne Dru, & Mercedes McCambridge; Pinky (1949), starring Jeanne Crain, Ethel Waters, Ethel Barrymore, Nina Mae McKinney, & Wiliam Lundigan; Marty (1955); starring Ernest Borgnine. For us Texans, there's nothing new about Bible-thumping politicians bedeviling us with the foolishness of their dogmatic Christian piety. A century ago, for example, a proposal was made to offer bilingual education to Spanishspeaking school kids. But it was quashed by the governor, who solemnly declared: “If English was good enough for Jesus Christ, it ought to be good enough for the children of Texas.” But suddenly, Louisiana's demagogic Christian officials have surged past Texas on the far right. The Pelican State's governor, an Elmer Gantry wannabe, has decreed that every single public-school classroom must henceforth prominently display the Ten...Article Link

"Elmer Gantry," published in 1927, is a piercing satire of American religious fundamentalism and the hypocrisy it often harbors. Elmer Gantry, the protagonist, is a charismatic but morally bankrupt evangelist. He's a master of manipulation, using religion as a tool for personal gain and power. Gantry's rise to prominence is not due to his spiritual convictions but rather his skill in exploiting the beliefs and emotions of others.    Donald Trump's rise in the political arena, on the other hand, is a real-life story that unfolded before our eyes. A businessman and television personality with no prior political experience, Trump climbed the political ladder with a blend of populist rhetoric, media savvy, and an uncanny ability to resonate with a significant segment of the American electorate.

Those Wonderful People Out There In The Dark

History repeats first as tragedy --- radio evangelism and the good, hard business sense of Christianity in the 1920s, but next the farce --- the co-opting of religion for political and financial purposes in the 21st Century. And, in both cases, railing at, to quote a fictional preacher, “Harvardism, Yaleism, and Princetonism.” The shadowy and evil elites, of course. Woops, throw in one more “ism,” Darwinism. It's on repeat play now. And it was all seen clearly in 1926 by a guy named Sinclair Lewis. Who penned a novel that inspired a fantastic and illustrative film, 1960's Elmer Gantry, from United Artists. The novel Gantry was so scandalous that it was, as the phrase goes, “banned in Boston.” It was incredibly popular nonetheless, but almost too hot to handle until the thawing of the Production Code for film in the 50s. At long last came Renaissance man Richard Brooks, to move Gantry forward as a project and into American theaters. email: David@thosewonderfulpeople.comWebsite and blog: www.thosewonderfulpeople.comIG: @thosewonderfulpeopleTwitter: @FilmsInTheDark

The Trail of the Hawk by Sinclair Lewis audiobook. Trail of the Hawk, narrated by Mike Vendetti aka Miketheauctioneer, is Sinclair Lewis’ second novel published under his own name. It was not at the time of release a smashing success as his later works, Babbitt, Elmer Gantry, and others, but his style and immense talent are certainly evident. We travel with The Hawk, or Carl Ericson, son of Norwegian immigrants, born at the end of the 19th century through the first three adventurous periods of the young man’s life. We see him as an adventurous boy, running away with Gertie Cowels, the girl that lives in the big house in the better part of town, only to be rescued by Bone Stillman, a backwoods philosopher and influence on Carl. We travel with him as he leaves his childhood, Gertie and Joralemon behind, for a short attempt at higher education, then to pursue the hobo life, a Bowery bartender, an engineer in Panama and an aviator. It is during the aviator phase that he becomes Hawk Ericson barnstorming his way across America, an exciting but dangerous lifestyle. Leaving aviation after too many close calls, and the loss of his best friend, he becomes an automobile man, and moves into phase three. It is in phase three, love adventure, that we find The Hawk in New York, mingling with polite society quite by accident. He is smitten by Ruth Winslow, while riding on a streetcar after a fight with Gertie, and follows Ruth to a party which he crashes. I truly enjoyed narrating this novel, and believe the listener will enjoy it, a trip into post Victorian, pre-Jazz Age America. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

John Ford in conversation with David Eastaugh In 1964, Ford joined with some school mates to form a band called Jaymes Fenda and the Vulcans. That November, they released two singles, "Mistletoe Love” and "The Only Girl", both of which were written by Ford. "Mistletoe Love" got some radio play through that Christmas season, but the band split up shortly afterwards. In October 1966, Ford stepped in to replace the bass player of a South London R&B/soul band called the Five Proud Walkers, and made his debut when the band opened for Champion Jack Dupree. The Five Proud Walkers was a popular club band and played a constant stream of gigs in and around London. But, in the spring of 1967, they toured England with Pink Floyd and decided to make the shift to Psychedelic music. That July, they changed their name to Elmer Gantry's Velvet Opera. The band released three albums and several singles but, in May 1970, Ford and drummer Richard Hudson left the band to join The Strawbs.

Elmer Gantry was a novel written by Sinclair Lewis in 1926 exposing so much of the preaching culture that thrived on hucksterism and hypocrisy; hell-fire, damnation and sweet salvation. It was made into a 1960 film that garnered several Academy Awards and was condemned by a variety of Protestant church leaders. All religious people, Christian and other traditions, we need to be kept honest. So if we know what hypocritical evangelism looks like, what about the real thing? This week, Jesus of Nazareth and his 72 disciples. Episode 019: To Be Nineteen Again The Who - Our Love Was (UK 1967) One of the most famous exports from the UK who are more known for their bombastic 70's anthems, Pete Towsend and co spearheaded the mod sound and broadcast it to the world with their debut anthem "My Generation".  Their lone psychedelic effort "Sell Out" yielded gems such as this one, a tale of a love once stale that is now revived and soaring.  The Gibsons - City Life (Australia 1967) A snooty mod pop big city anthem with an inexplicable feline inspired middle eight by an little known outfit from Australia that relocated to the UK.  They released a handful of singles during their brief two year career. The Tony Hendrik 5 - Said My Say (Germany 1968) Quintessential freakbeat by this obscure band from Cologne, Germany that features a prolific singer-songwriter and producer at the helm.  They released one album and many singles during their career, all of which are worth investigating. The Creation - Midway Down (UK 1968) The UK's finest mod art combo and an unsung influence on many a guitar hero, this 1968 single - a cover of an even more obscure US psych act John Wonderling - catches the band winding down before their eventual demise.  This vivid single was the closest the band would get to psychedelia and is one of the last they'd record and release.   The Loot - Baby Come Closer (UK 1967) The sound and feel of this song captures the mood of the mod love song like no other.  A stomping beat and catchy riff lead way to a too cool to care vocal that still oozes a desire for his love's affection. The band would release stellar examples of the genre during their brief two year career.Spooky Tooth - Do Right People (UK 1968) A non-album b-side that shows just how serious this band's chops were, the Spooky's definitely took a page from Traffic's sound and turned it up a notch on this one.  One part bass and organ driven soul stomper and one part proto-prog mind melter, this is a perfect example of a band showing off it's roots while showing us a vision of the future.State of Micky and Tommy - With Love From 1 to 5  (UK 1967) A truly classic mod pop anthem by this clever duo and a song that deserved to be a hit worldwide.  This unsung duo only released two singles in their time, but both of such high quality that they are known as staples of the era and are often compiled.Elmer Gantry's Velvet Opera - Flames (UK 1967) Freakbeat in the truest sense in that this is essentially a turned up and blown out version of a Motown riff.  The classic eighth note bass notes that kick it off is an instant nod to their influences before launching the sound into the stratosphere.  The band's two albums are essential listening. The Twilights - Cathy Come Home (Australia 1967) One of the most prolific and successful bands from down under, this proto-powerpop number displays the wonderful songwriting and harmonies of this tight unit  Somebody's Image - Hide and Seek (Australia 1968) Another obscure Australian band that only released three singles during their time - of which this pop-sike beauty is their last - and featured a young Russell Morris who would go on to solo fame. The Consortium - The Day the Train Never Came (UK 1969) A shortened version of UK pop group The West Coast Consortium, this band released a handful of singles through the late 60's and early 70's that featured a pristine harmony pop sound as evidenced here.  The half time middle break is truly a stand out moment in an already magical genre. The Cedars - For Your Information (Lebanon 1968) Lebanon's prime freakbeat export that combined their native sound with the burgeoning UK freakbeat/pop-sike sound to great effect.

Eavesdropping at the Movies

Play Episode Listen Later May 29, 2020 54:44

On a very special Eavesdropping at the Movies requested by our listeners, José takes us through the career of Burt Lancaster, every one of whose films he has been watching during the lockdown. Lancaster is a star through whose career a whole history of movements and evolutions in Hollywood can be tracked, from the studio noirs of the 1940s right through to the anti-war allegories of the 1970s, taking in all of the social, political, stylistic, industrial and aesthetic shifts that would take place in a constantly changing America. On screen, Lancaster was capable of moving fluidly between genres and styles, including noir, action-adventure and Westerns, won the 1960 Oscar for Best Actor for Elmer Gantry, was regularly amongst the top box-office stars from 1950-1965, and worked with some of the great screenwriters and playwrights, including Tennessee Williams and Arthur Miller. Off screen, he was one of the foremost independent producers of his day. He fought against McCarthyism during the height of the Red Scare, employing blacklisted screenwriters when nobody else would, later made a number of anti-racist revisionist Westerns, and championed progressive causes throughout his life. José argues that Lancaster conceived of the cinema as a national theatre of ideas, a place in which conversations could be had and arguments advanced, a conception that ties his entire, varied career together. Mike, on the other hand, has barely seen anything of Burt Lancaster's, and José has put him on a crash course of five or six films in order to get a sense of his work, style and persona. He's left with questions to throw at José: Why Lancaster hasn't lingered culturally as strongly as some of his contemporaries? Is it his politics? His acting ability? His style? Is his reputation for muscles, teeth, and little else, justified? Burt Lancaster, José concludes, represents the best of America. His work is ripe for rediscovery, and offers rich insight on a constantly changing culture and industry. Recorded on 19th May 2020.

The rise of the speakeasy was one of many unintended consequences of Prohibition - and others were much deadlier. Not coincidentally, at the same time Prohibition was taking effect, the Klu Klux Klan rose to power. They combined Prohibition’s anti-immigrant rhetoric with violence. As the number of speakeasies continued to grow, and states continued to buckle down, suppliers couldn’t keep up. Quality went down. Most bootleg alcohol from the time had elements of stuff that would kill you. But people everywhere still wanted to drink - and they would go to any length to get one.Almost everyone could see there was a problem with how Prohibition was actually playing out, but no one could agree what the solution was.No Place of Grace by T. J. Jackson Lears is a fantastic book to learn about the roots of modernism and anti-modernism in American culture. Allan Levine’s The Devil in Babylon also explores these themes, specifically how these impulses played out in 1920’s America. For more on the author of Elmer Gantry, Sinclair Lewis: Rebel from Main Street by Richard Lingerman is a great read. And to understand the relationship between the Ku Klux Klan and Prohibition, Paul Angle’s Bloody Williamson: A Chapter in American Lawlessness and Thomas Pegram’s articles and books, including One Hundred Percent American are essential reading. Again, Lisa McGirr’s The War on Alcohol explores these topics quite thoroughly and connects them to the rise of the modern state. A few different articles have delved into the dirty political campaigns of the 1920s, including this good summary by Mental Floss.Support us by supporting our sponsors!

The Producer's Perspective Podcast with Ken Davenport

Des McAnuff is the American-Canadian former artistic director of the Stratford Shakespeare Festival and director of such Broadway musical theatre productions as Big River, The Who's Tommy and Jersey Boys. He was artistic director of the La Jolla Playhouse, which he revived in 1983, during which time the theatre won more than 200 awards. For the Playhouse, he directed Romeo and Juliet, A Mad World, My Masters, Big River, As You Like It, A Walk in the Woods, Two Rooms, 80 Days, Macbeth, Three Sisters, Elmer Gantry, Much Ado About Nothing, The Who's Tommy, and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. He has directed two motion pictures, The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle (2000) and Cousin Bette (1998). Des has directed some of my favorite shows on Broadway. On top of his directorial credits, Des has been the Director-In-Charge at both the La Jolla Playhouse and the Stratford Festival, taking both organizations to new heights during his reign. As you can imagine, he and I had a lot to talk about, including . . . How starting a theater company with other like-minded up-and-comers helped launch his career (that theater company is the now powerhouse producing org, The Dodgers, by the way). How he develops a show . . . which is never the same way twice. How the Broadway/Regional Theater enhancement model was born  . . and why he thinks what’s happening in that market today is “dangerous.” The challenges of creating a musical with pre-existing music (Tommy, Jersey Boys) and his tips on how to do it. What show (or should I say “shows”?) he’s dying to direct . . . and why.   Keep up with me: @KenDavenportBway www.theproducersperspective.com Learn more about your ad choices. In the eighty years since the publication of Elmer Gantry, it has become almost impossible to satirize the American evangelicalism any more. Names like Jim Bakker, Jimmy Swaggart, and Ted Haggard quickly come to mind as allegedly committed followers of Christ who have committed great scandal. Christians often wonder how to make sense of such acts committed by individuals claiming to be followers of Christ. They ask, "How can Christians do such things?" and "How can they continue to do them for so long?" Eventually, they will ask, "Are these individuals saved or not? Were they ever saved to start with? Will they go to heaven when they die?" All of these questions are legitimate and the Bible provides answers for us. The Bible never shies away from difficult issues. Regarding this particularly difficult issue, the Bible uses four kinds of passages to present the biblical perspective on those who fail to persevere in the faith they profess. We will examine these four types of passages.
