It's true, the classic novel was published in 1949, but it's quite obviously relevant to this season, and to the modern day, and thus - It Happened One Year is going all-in on George Orwell's 1984! Sarah & Joe discuss the history of the novel and their reactions from recent reads. Then, the greatest marketing tie-in of all time - Michael Radford's 1984 starring John Hurt and Richard Burton, filmed during the timeframe of the novel's setting, and released in that title year! Suck it, 2012 (2009) and Blues Brothers 2000 (1998)! Finally, some little discussion of our current verging-of-dystopia here in America - the impending (possible) Biden v. Trump rematch. (This all leads directly into the bonus episode, also available right now!)

We're back at it again. John embarks upon the pointless annual journey he calls Schlocktober with the movie that started it all: John Landis' directorial debut Schlock (1973). Ryan tackles another horror franchise with The Conjuring (2013), and Dixon probably gets a little too political with his discussion of Michael Radford's adaptation of the dystopian George Orwell novel 1984 (1984). Dixon is patiently awaiting his banishment from the internet while John and Ryan quietly talk to potential replacements. For our eighth anniversary, actor Romina D'Ugo (I Like Movies, now playing in theatres across Canada) is here to honor Michael Radford's 1994 heartbreaker Il Postino -- a film that stands as testament to both Pablo Neruida's poetry, and star Massimo Troisi, who spent a decade trying to make this movie and died the day after it wrapped. Your genial host Norm Wilner is in awe of ... well, all of that.

George Orwell’s dystopian novel was made into a great film in the year of its title: 1984. I'm guessing most of you have at least heard of George Orwell's novel “1984.” It's about a totalitarian state in the future, one of constant surveillance, in which critical thinking is a crime, and authority is represented by a dictator named Big Brother. An office worker in one of the ministries, Winston Smith, starts to question authority, and initiates a secret love affair with a woman named Julia, even though unsanctioned relationships are illegal. This is the plot, in brief, but perhaps the book has become so familiar that we've neglected to read it carefully anymore. Crucially, Orwell's ideas hinged on language and the way authoritarians use it to hide and distort the facts. Making a good film version of 1984 is difficult. It's been tried a few times, with varied success. My favorite version was released in 1984, adapted and directed by a young Englishman named Michael Radford. Radford's producers and other backers were behind his project, but they insisted that the picture be released in the year 1984, when the media would inevitably start talking about the book, comparing what it said to what the year looked like now, and so forth. That meant they were in a hurry to get it done, and it's impressive what Radford and his team, under pressure, managed to achieve on a pretty low budget. The screenplay was very faithful to the book. The director's first brilliant decision was to make the production design appear, not like some vision of the future, but similar to the styles of the year the book was written, 1948. There are computer, surveillance, and television screens in the film, but all the technology looks shabby and old-fashioned. The vehicles, the offices and other buildings, the clothes, look bleak, like England did after the war. Roger Deakins, early in what would become a very long career, paints the film in stark gray—a world of grime and confinement. The color photography sometimes looks almost black and white. All the amazing visual effects, such as the crowd scenes at the hate rallies with the large screens and the image of Big Brother, were done in camera—in other words, they were shot just as they appear. Of course there was no computer generated imagery then, but Radford couldn't even afford the current technology such as blue screens. In the main role of Winston Smith, Radford cast John Hurt, who conveys a kind of wounded resentment and passivity that gives an edge to the character's rebellion. The terrible punishment Winston endures Hurt makes palpable—his suffering has a visceral onscreen power. He truly went the extra mile. As Julia, a relative newcomer named Suzanna Hamilton has just the right mix of mischief and defiant strength. But the biggest coup was getting Richard Burton to play O'Brien, the drily sinister official who represents the intellectual voice of the state machine. He was not a well man, and had trouble remembering his lines. This caused some agonizing delays in the shoot. But the final result on screen is utterly compelling, one of his great performances. Instead of trying to act the villain as a lesser performer would do, Burton's calm and deliberate manner, and the precision and thoughtfulness of his delivery, turns O'Brien into the epitome of totalitarian thinking. It was his last appearance on screen. He died of a cerebral hemorrhage two months before the movie was released. 1984 did OK at the time—not a big hit. Since then, however, its stature has steadily increased, and now it's widely considered the best film version of Orwell's great, still relevant book.
In the twenty-first episode of Season 5 (Dystopia Myopia) Kyle is joined by fellow podcaster Ben Thelen (of the Dead Reckoner podcast) and editor Kristi Shimek (of Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist) to discuss Michael Radford's adaptation of George Orwell's foundational novel about love and individuality expunged in statist conformity and thought control in 1984.
Matt introduces Andrew to the 1998 Asia Argento film "B. Monkey" in which Beatricè (B for short) is a thief who can get in anywhere. But she wants to leave her life of crime. A chance meeting with a school teacher and late night hospital jazz DJ may be her way out.

We sit down with 5 of our playwriting peers in this awesome supersize episode. Our special guests: Chris Bishop, Michael Radford, Bill McCann, Lisa Holt, and Bill Brohaugh offer insight into their playwriting process, thoughts on working with others, and talk about some of their projects - past and present, as well as pet peeves, and more in this wide ranging discussion.Note: We recorded this podcast over multiple days and times, and were originally going to cut this into 2 episodes, but wanted to present it in its entirety since we found the subject matter and our guests fascinating. As such, the original ending and beginning of another episode is heard, and the guests may be out of the recorded order. After this recording, Michael Radford and Bill McCann were named the winner and runner up, respectively, in the Kentucky Theater Association Roots of the Bluegrass Playwriting contest for their 10 minute play entries this year, and we want to congratulate them both on this accomplishment. Great work!

In this week’s minisode, Will and James discuss Michael Radford’s 2004 adaptation of The Merchant of Venice, starring Al Pacino, Jeremy Irons, and Joseph Fiennes’ distinctive mullet. Despite its sumptuous costume and scenery that Pacino avoids chewing during the course of his humane performance as Shylock, the movie still doesn’t quite work. The guys break down why and discuss whether Merchant can work as a movie today. // CREDITS // Intro Music: Jon Sayles, "The Witches' Dance" (composed by anonymous); Outro Music: Jon Sayles, “Saltarello” (composed by anonymous); Illustrative Excerpt: “The Merchant of Venice,” dir. "Shylock." The very name of Shakespeare’s infamous Venetian moneylender overshadows the plot of this complex and twisted comedy about love, marriage, and the importance of always reading the fine print in your credit card agreement. Is he an anti-Semitic caricature? A representation of vengeful legalism run amok, contrasted with the concept of mercy and grace? An anti-hero who deserves sympathy? The voice of one of Shakespeare’s most humanistic and moving speeches? In this episode with discussions of everything from The Sopranos to capital markets in the Mediterranean to critiques of the merchant Antonio’s moronic business practices, Will and James argue that the answer is “all of the above.” // CREDITS // Intro Music: Jon Sayles, "The Witches' Dance" (composed by anonymous); Outro Music: Jon Sayles, “Saltarello” (composed by anonymous); Illustrative Excerpts: “In Camelot,” The Sopranos, dir. Massimo Troisi had a driving passion to make The Postman, so much so that he put medical care off to get it made. This lead to his death immediately after principal photography, but his passion project was able to be seen by the world. But would it have the success story it has if it wasn't for the Miramax marketing machine? Hard to say, but we don't think so, despite it being an absolutely adorable film. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our Foreign Language Films Nominated for Best Picture series with Michael Radford's 1994 film The Postman (Il Postino). We talk about the nature of foreign language films being left out of the Best Picture race from the early 70s to the mid 90s and why that may have been. We also talk about the nature of the Best Picture award and what a film should have intrinsically to get that nomination, but how marketing efforts really led to shifts there. We discuss Troisi's passion for this film and how it pushed him to get it made, regardless of his health. We look at the nature of a biographical story and why including Pablo Neruda in this film doesn't make it biographical. We chat about the power of Neruda's poetry and why it works so well in this film. We touch on Radford as a director and Luis Bacalov's incredible score. And we look at other films that were left out of the Best Picture race. It's a beautiful and heartwarming film. Maybe not Best Picture material, but certainly something that warmed both our hearts. We had a great time talking about it so check it out then tune in to this week's show! The Next Reel – when the movie ends, our conversation begins. In perhaps our most detailed exploration so far, we dive into the '84 adaptation of 1984 by Michael Radford, weighing the quality of translation, the missing & present underlying themes, the classic story's applications to modern society, and what Orwell was up to with this idea. Plus, a TON of creative pondering on what a modern adaptation might be like. It's a cinephile's delight in this deepest of dives, where little is left untouched. Il Postino: The Postman, was a hugely successful Italian film made in 1994, but behind the scenes tragedy had played out during production. The lead, Massimo Troisi was plagued by heart problems relating to a childhood illness. The film’s British director, Michael Radford, was faced with a difficult decision, to finish the film or stop, as Massimo’s health deteriorated on set. He opted to push on with the production, but Massimo didn’t quite make it. He died the day after principle filming ended. Michael went on to complete the film, wanting to make it something that Massimo would have been proud of. Nineteen Eighty-Four, also known as 1984, is a #1984 British dystopian science fiction film written and directed by Michael Radford, based upon George Orwell's novel of the same name. Starring John Hurt, Richard Burton, Suzanna Hamilton, and Cyril Cusack, the film follows the life of Winston Smith, a low-ranking civil servant in a war-torn London ruled by Oceania, a totalitarian superstate. Smith (Hurt) struggles to maintain his sanity and his grip on reality as the regime's overwhelming power and influence persecutes individualism and individual thinking on both a political and personal level. The film, which features Burton's last screen appearance, is dedicated to him.[6] The film was nominated for a BAFTA Award for Best Art Direction, and won two Evening Standard British Film Awards for Best Film and Best Actor. The film stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Lenny Kravitz, Stanley Tucci, and Donald Sutherland.[5] The story takes place in a dystopian post-apocalyptic future in the nation of Panem, where a boy and a girl from each of the nation's 12 Districts are chosen annually as "tributes" and forced to compete in The Hunger Games, an elaborate televised fight to the death. Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) volunteers to take her younger sister's place, and with her district's male tribute, Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson), travels to the Capitol to train and compete in the games. #ww4 #NineteenEightyFour --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/vegansteven/message
In the latest edition of make/remake Dakota Arsenault and Stephanie Prior talk about George Orwell’s novel 1984 and two different cinematic adaptations of it. In 1949, George Orwell published his landmark novel detailing what the future might look like if we allow our civil liberties to be eroded and for extreme ideologies to take hold so strongly that the very fabric of society would crumble. It only took eight years for the first film adaptation of the book to be made directed by Michael Anderson and staring Edmond O’Brien as Winston Smith. The 1984 version of 1984 directed by Michael Radford and staring John Hurt as Winston, portrays communism just as dangerous as right wing authoritarianism. Dakota and Steph discuss what similarities both films employ to tell the same story along with what differences the filmmakers decided to diverge from each other. Both contexts are looking at the pros and cons of the director’s choices. Ryan and Dave consult the authority on authoritarianism, George Orwell, for director Michael Radford's adaptation of the famed author's frightening 1949 novel, which conceived a world where the very thoughts in your head could be criminalized. Set to a soundtrack by Eurythmics. Because the '80's. John Hurt is fantastic as rebellious hero Winston Smith, and the most well-known of Liz Taylor's husbands makes for quite the terrifying inquisitor. Also, Ryan and Dave share nutty/scary factoids about North Korea, the modern day "Eastasia", if you will. In addition, Ryan clears up confusion over whether anybody in Canada could actually be prosecuted just for being a transphobic douchebag, while Dave searches far and wide to come up with an example of discrimination against white people for the color of their skin. It's like a rare Pokemon, but you too can see it if you're in JUST the right place at JUST the right time! Next week, Dave's fascination with animal/human hybrid stories leads your hosts to... "The Island of Dr. Moreau" (yes, THAT one)!

In our fifth episode of the pod, we talk about movie score composers, and it's surprisingly... informational?! We couldn't believe it, either. Don't worry, there's still a few goofs in there. Featuring: Take a trip to the land of giants (please don't actually do that thing); Audrey argues against herself and wins (or loses?); the other on-screen monster was Weeping Angels; shed a tear for Alex North; also shed a tear for our horrible pronunciations of international composers' names. Following a free screening of Michael Radford's adaptation of 1984 in early April as part of a nationwide event, Film Comment Editor Nicolas Rapold moderated a panel discussion about present-day doublespeak and dystopia. This week's episode of the FC podcast presents the conversation, which took place at the Film Society of Lincoln Center. Using the film's aesthetics and narrative as a starting point, the panel—featuring critic and curator Ashley Clark; filmmaker Petra Epperlein, director of the Stasi documentary Karl Marx City; and New York Magazine book critic Christian Lorentzen—considers the Trump administration's manipulations of memory, motifs in modern dystopian literature and film, the role of media in public discourse in the UK and Russia, and how Orwell's original text resonates in 2017.

George Orwell’s classic dystopian novel 1984 is one of Missing Frames host Shawn Eastridge’s all-time favorites. And though Michael Radford’s film adaptation (released in 1984) has a decent reputation thanks to Roger Deakins’ stunning cinematography and John Hurt’s esteemed lead performance, Shawn has avoided it out of fear that it wouldn’t live up to his expectations. But no more.Join Shawn and co-hosts Brandon and Lindsey Kendrick as they discuss 1984 and the risks that come with adapting a beloved novel to the big screen. And remember…Big Brother is watching you…NOTE: As if 1984 wasn't depressing enough, we got the news that John Hurt had passed away while we were recording this episode. We want to extend our deepest condolences to his friends and family. He was one of the all-time greats and we're glad we could honor his memory with a viewing of one of his finest performances.HOSTSShawn EastridgeBrandon KendrickLindsey Kendrick
