September 6th, 1980, "Roklahoma" was held in Norman, Oklahoma at Owen Field with over 30,000 people in attendance for Pat Benatar, Sammy Hagar, Van Halen and Doobie Brothers. In 2007, Rocklahoma as we know it began in Pryor, Oklahoma. There was a group of individuals involved in the rebooting of the festival into a multiday, 1980's Hair Metal Festival. Max Baker Jr. was one of those individuals who helped reboot it as we discuss with Chipz Enuff in an earlier episode of this podcast. In this episode, Max, Jeff, & Jay are joined by Dani, Miss Rocklahoma 2023 and we discuss the process of entering the contest, what it was like finding out you've made it to the next round, then onto the finals, & ultimately winning, as well as how Max & Dani met at a Garth Brooks concert at the Diamond Ballroom. HAPPY BIRTHDAY MAX BAKER JR! We decided to release this Episode on Max's Birthday (he doesn't know we decided to release it early for his bday)! March 20th, 1987, The Ramones were on the "Animal Boy" Tour which came through Dallas, TX at The Longhorn Ballroom (newly reopened BTW). This was the very first time Max had interviewed an artist. Up until this point as a journalist, he had only taken photographs for JAM Magazine. He hadn't actually interviewed anyone yet. Max has said for years that he had the cassette recording of him interviewing Joey Ramone backstage at the Longhorn Ballroom in Dallas, TX. None of us believed him, & we were wrong. He did indeed interview Joey Ramone. He found the cassette & we have digitized it & included the interview in this episode. The audio from this cassette has degraded over the years. There was a few hours of clean up work needed, just to be able to understand what Max & Joey are saying because of all of the noise & things going on in the Ramones dressing room while this interview was taking place. Marky is drumming on the table in the background the whole time. The rest of the band are carrying on with whatever conversations they were having, so there is a lot going on but we did our best to clean it up enough to be able to hear Max's questions, as well as Joey's answers. On the Ramones - Animal Boy Tour, there were 2 setlists that were used but i couldn't find the exact setlist for the Dallas show. Heres is the link to the setlist from the New Orleans show in the same month - https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/ramones/1987/mcalister-auditorium-tulane-university-new-orleans-la-4bc98f92.html Here is the setlist from the Austin, Tx show the same month - https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/ramones/1987/backroom-austin-tx-53c98f9d.html Happy Birthday Max Baker Jr.! In Episode 54, Max & company discuss how Max picked up the pieces after Choice Music burned to the ground, benefit shows at both, Cains Ballroom & the Diamond Ballroom. We discuss the hate thrown towards Max on message boards & the internet. Like a phoenix, rising from the ashes, literally, Max picks himself up from being kicked back to the bottom, determined to keep going, he didn't come this far to lose.... These series of events is what gave birth to The Fabulous Baker Boys & Casino Entertainment. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
September 7th, 2004 - Dog Fashion Disco, Tubring, & Bad Acid Trip at The Rockwell in Springfield Missouri. Max was in Ghetto Boys mode, his mind was playing tricks on him.... 2 days later there was a Killswitch Engage, Eighteen Visions, Autumn to Ashes, & 36 Crazyfists at the Cain's Ballroom in Tulsa, Oklahoma. September 11th, 2004 - Family Jam - Cross Canadian Ragweed & Gary Alan at the Zoo Amp in OKC, Followed by an Infinite Records Showcase in Tulsa w/ Rotting Cycle, 80 Proof, Disjointed, Separation from All, Wither & more... 10 Local Metal Bands on 2 Stages at the Cains Ballroom. Max & crew starts to do Concert Production for Casinos... Max got to be the runner for Scott Weiland with some Velvet Revolver shows. Driving Scott was always an adventure! Max gets into concert & event production at Casino's due to a catastrophic event in his life, causing him to literally pick up the pieces yet again when Choice Music burns to the ground in a fire. We should have catered 4 fried chickens, dry, white toast, & a coke for this Episode as we begin in Blues Brothers style. We discuss the Nate Dog from Element, Tribute show on Feb. 29th, 2004 w/ Failsafe, Disjointed, Wither, Old Major, etc... This was the first show at the Diamond Ballroom where Max had 2 stages inside the venue. One stage would have a band playing, while the 2nd stage was loading on & setting up. Move forward to March for an Infinite Records showcase with Lure & more OKC bands. March 21st, 2004 @ the Diamond Ballroom, Ill Nino, Flaw, 40 Below Summer, & Element80 rolled through OKC on a $400 tour package. We finish with a show at the Coca-Cola Bricktown Event Center, where an artist did not approve of the limosuine provided to take them from the hotel to the venue... There are two ways to handle situations like this.... You can get upset, throw a fit to the promoter until you get what you want or don't get what you want, but by acting like this, you make everyone's day difficult.... or.... you can be cool, be respectful & figure out a solution without being disrespectful to everyone you're working with that day.... Twista & his camp, handled it incorrectly.... So unfortunately, strict curfew rules apply once the show is over. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
We resume the adventures in Oklahoma Music history, chronologically we start this episode in 2004. Find out how Max & company were sneaking looks at his rehearsals that they were not supposed to be watching. Oops.... See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
We decided to release Episode 45 a little early.... So bare with us as we get out of order on this one. Episode 44 has not been skipped. It will still drop on Monday as originally intended. Part of getting older that no one likes to talk about or deal with is, losing those close to us along the way. Many of these people played a huge part of Max's life, concerts, event productions, building stages, driving artists all over this state & being part of the Adventures of Max Baker Jr. On February 22nd, 2023, we lost another legend, Ronnie Gene Simpson (63). Max met Ronnie at a very young age riding mini bikes, ripping through the southside as well as getting banned from a school talent show. They reconnected as young adults and began working shows & events together, leaving a trail of stories along the way. This episode is a tribute to several of our fallen brothers that helped create these stories.... See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In the concert business, not every show is a success. Sometimes you hit a homerun, & sometimes you lose it all. There were 2 Pantera shows in Oklahoma in 1990, one in OKC at The Diamond Ballroom & one in Tulsa at the Cains & we talk about them both. During this time period, Bricktown OKC was dark & dangerous at night and the canal didn't exist but a club called Kinetics did and held shows by NIN, Pantera, LA Guns, & more. Lots of legendary shows through the end of 1991. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

From Ashes To New planning on releasing new music by the end of the year? That's Lance Dowdle lead guitarist of the band says they're shooting for-working on a concept and new songs as we speak. Lance guarantees this next album will be the one that keeps them on the rock landscape permanently. Enjoying success off of their latest album "The Future", Lance says that it's been a wild ride so far. The band has undergone a few lineup changes over the past few years but has found the right combination of people joking around with each other and not getting offended. They've created a comfort level with each other that is crucial in any situation where you're going to be in a confined space for an insane amount of time while being on the road. Lance touched on the success of their song "Crazy". He said that song wasn't originally on the record. It was a late addition after the album got handed back to the guys from the record label and told "You need more". They went back into the studio and recorded "Crazy" in 40 minutes. The rest is history. Such an ironic story in terms of the writing process. When it feels right, it can take you no time at all. Unfortunately, there are many times where it doesn't happen like that and you have to drudge through the drudgery. Lance and From Ashes To New were at the Diamond Ballroom earlier this week. He talked about their last experience there with a scorpion onstage. A conversation about phobia's broke out. With the amount of critters hanging around the Diamond Ballroom, Lance suggested they should open a petting zoo. New music is on the horizon and perhaps we'll get it by the end of the year. Hear the full conversation with Lance Dowdle of From Ashes To New on episode 94 of the DOMKcast. #DOMKRocks

Sevendust, Mark Tremonti and Cane Hill make a stop in OKC at the Diamond Ballroom in March and would be worth the drive. Devin Clark joins the DOMKcast for the first time this week. From humble beginnings in a Tapdong parking lot 12 years ago, the Stepping Stone indie rock festival celebrated another success in 2015 in spite of heavy rain, intense winds and a washed-out beach due to Typhoon Chan-hom. The Korea File was at the festival's Plan B, Daemyung Resort's Diamond Ballroom on Hamdeok Beach, to speak with festival organizer Kim Myoung-su and some of the bands, including Romantiqua's guitar-heavy post-rock, the Mogwai-esque soundscape harmonics of Apollo 18 and the dynamic folk punk of Jeju's own Zen Alone.
