lens shift - from endless growth to societal collapse

This is a bonus episode from my 'a calm presence' substack: lens shift featuring an excerpt from e164 jimmy ung - proximity proportionate responsibility. The original text is below. The audio version was recorded on my iPhone in Vancouver on September 9, 2024 (4 minutes, 36 seconds). I also invite you to read the comments about this posting including one by Don Hill about the use of 'either/or dilemmas' in this kind of writing, which is a fair point (thanks Don). My response included that I sometimes 'do not leave enough room for the listener or reader to take their own space' (I'm working on that) but that in this case, I wanted to produce a 'polemic and provocation' given the severity of our situation. Thanks for reading and-or listening. *lens shiftfrom endless growth to societal collapseOk, are you still with me after that subtitle? :-)If so, when you get a chance, please try this exercise:Think of something you are currently doing - anything - and then shift your perspective on that activity from an ‘endless growth' lens to a ‘societal collapse' lens.Everything changes, right?Well, maybe not right away…Here's an example: You're driving a car and you're ‘endless growth' mode. You might feel encouraged, seemingly without consequence, to want a bigger or faster vehicle, whereas with a societal collapse lens, hum, you would make rethink owning a private vehicle altogether and focus your energies on other things such as on our dying planet.Same car, two very different lenses.Jimmy Ung's in e164 jimmy ung - proximity proportionate responsibility of the conscient podcast said something that I think is worth remembering at this point:  ·      ‘If we were to do an inventory of where all the things we own were made, that would give us a very interesting map of where our responsibility, our attention and our donations ought to go because our pressures on the global systems can be revealed. That's a much more reasonable way to interact with different crises than to simply read about it on the news and interact with the whole of it without the context of our footprint.'Right, context. So, having done the exercise, what does one do? : car sharing, keep our old phones as long as possible, donate strategically to charity, learn to unlearn ? There are many things that we are doing and can continue to do more of…But, the critical part is to apply this idea of ‘lens shift' in every aspect of our lives and see where it takes us.Personally, it has brought relief, relief in the spirit of the Deep Adaptation Forum's ‘embodying and enabling loving responses to our predicament'.Relief, but not in a doomist or defeatist kind of way, but relief in the sense of releasing pressure.Releasing pressure that helps me deal with things as they really are and direct my energy based on what I feel about that reality not what I imagine through the fairy tale of modernity. *END NOTES FOR ALL EPISODESI've been producing the conscient podcast as a learning and unlearning journey since May 2020 on un-ceded Anishinaabe Algonquin territory (Ottawa). It's my way to give back and be present. In parallel with the production of the conscient podcast and it's francophone counterpart, balado conscient, I publish a Substack newsletter called ‘a calm presence' which are 'short, practical essays about collapse acceptance, adaptation, response and art'. Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/177 Roger Fletcher is here to share the history of the drift boat and how it all started back in the early 20th century with a few river guides that needed a better boat for whitewater.  We discover the connection between the Rogue, Mckenzie, Grand Canyon Dories and why the name drift boat stuck over the river dorie. Roger describes how the drift boat design came to be through a few key people over the last 100 years.  Roger is the leading authority on drift boats so is very exciting to have him on the podcast today. Drift Boat History Show Notes  - I noted Jerry Briggs and the Colorado River dories. - Milo Thomson used the old scow boat and were the first boats on the river until 1925.  Milo and the early guides on the river were there to focus on drift boat fishing and guiding their clients. - We hear the story of Keith Steele and the first boats built for the Colorado River and Martin Litton - I noted the Pete Mcbride video and Martin's boat. Drift Boat Plans - We talk about the Dorie Book by John Gardner.  In this episode we didn't go deep into drift boat Plans but you can check out Drift Boats and Dories for 10 full plan sets and how to build your own boat. There are a number of drift boat plans in Roger's book but there are other resources around the web.  There are various boat school and classes that you can take advantage of. - Veltie Pruitt is the guy who built the old scow for the river. Veltie shortened the boat and made it much lighter of a boat. - in 1925 Prince Helfrich saw veltie go by in the new 13 foot boat.  So Veltie built a boat for Prince. - Woody hindman moved in around 1934 to the area from Texas.  Woody is maybe the most important person to contemporary design.  He built the first double ender and is basically what we see today in a contemporary drift boat. - We talk about Ray Heater and the 14' rapid robert has great carrying capacity and can get up on step - Joe Koffler with Koffler Boats talked about getting up on plane with a sled in a recent podcast we put together. - colorado rapids on the deschtues - The lava falls dorie and the boat rolling and dumping.  And if you thought you needed a huge drift boat to run the Grand Canyon, think again.  This guy ran it in a 13 foot drift boat. - We talked about Roger's Martin Litton interview and why Martin was a bigger than life figure. - Tom kaarhus played a big role in the evolution of drift boats by innovating plywood as the material of choice for drift boats. - Vintage wooden boat tours over in Jackson Wyoming - We talk about my Ray's River Dorie boat and how to refinish an old boat. - The winkle bar boat was a lot like the log driver boat from Maine.  This is the boat that migrated across the country and landed in Oregon. - you can get the book Drift Boats and river dories here at Anglers Book supply. - Here's the old photo of Martin's son in an early Colorado River Dorie. Woody Hindman was the biggest influence on drift boats He is the guy who created the double ender which is what has given us the current drift boat design.  His boat of choice became the 16' double ender.  He added the motor on the transom and is now the boat we see for most wood boats and drift boats. Drift Boats for Sale Resources You can go to Ray's River Dories for a new wood boat or Jason Hayes on the McKenzie.  Then over to Montana where many are stih and glue. Wooden Boat People is a great place to find and sell wooden boats. We also touched on Don Hill boats and the effect on the McKenzie boat style. DH Drift Boats is now owned by another person. - The emerald mile and the run. You can find Roger at RiversTouch.com Drift Boat History Resources Noted in the Show John Gadner and the Dorie Book Drift Boats and River Dories Drift Boat Videos Noted in the Show Rogue River Whitewater Video - Great Views Drift Boat History Conclusion We discover the history of the drift boat from the guys who wrote the book on it.  Roger Fletcher shares some great stories including how a little-known boat builder from grants pass produced 35 of the greatest Colorado river dories in history.

THE FARM HANDS are one of the most exciting and in demand bands in Bluegrass Music. Since their inception in 2010, the band has won an unprecedented 24 major awards including BAND OF THE YEAR at the 2018 Bluegrass Music Awards. Personnel includes Bluegrass Hall of Fame inductee Tim Graves on resophonic guitar, #1 hit songwriter Daryl Mosley, super picker Keith Tew, and champion banjo player Don Hill. The four are known for their exquisite quartet harmonies and tight instrumental talent. ‘Colors' is the band's current release on Pinecastle Records. GRANT MALOY SMITH is a singer/songwriter of heartfelt country/roots music - an artful blend of country, bluegrass, folk, and pop music. His songs tell heartfelt stories about real people, and are unfailingly optimistic and forward looking. His current album "Dust Bowl - American Stories" spent 17 weeks on the Billboard charts. On this epic album, three years in the making, Smith takes you on a trip back through time, to the American Great Plains of the 1930s where over-farming, combined with a terrible drought that went on year after year, turned lush farmland into a wasteland. But within the hardship lie stories of love, joy, and the solid backbone of the American rancher and farmer. These stories are told in each song on this album. WoodSongs Kid: Phoebe White is an award winning 8-year-old singer from London, Kentucky.

In 1994, Don Hill and his family sold their home in Canada's Rocky Mountains. The house was haunted. It was your typical haunted house: mysterious noises, chilling waves of terror, and even a ghost -- a luminous, transparent thing -- that vanished. Frightened and intrigued, Don set out to discover what it was that haunted him and his house. He kept a diary (you'll hear and can read parts of it). He consulted psychologists & spiritual experts. And he volunteered as an experimental subject in a brain-science lab where his terrible experience in Canmore, Alberta was reproduced; he learned firsthand about the effects of electromagnetic and geomagnetic forces on human perception. Subscribe to the podcast. It's free. Download the e-book chapters -- -- one for every episode -- you'll read about new and cutting-edge research that advances a modern understanding of the supernatural and perspectives once thought preposterous. There's also a surprising twist to the 'ghost' story. How it informs current scientific theories of interdimensional reality; the probability of humanity living in a simulation; and why space travellers on a mission to Mars are likely to hallucinate along the way.
