Trump's Tariff Power Play: Why It Might Work (If We Stay Patient)

Uncommon Sense with Ginny Robinson

In this episode of Uncommon Sense with Ginny Robinson, I'm giving my take (to the best of my ability—because I'm not a tariff expert and neither are most of the people chiming in right now) on Trump's gutsy new tariff move. It's the one that's got half the country cheering and the other half clutching their pearls. While the media yells “economic suicide,” I'm here to suggest that this strategy might actually work—but not overnight. We'll talk about the possibility of long-term gain, the reality of short-term discomfort, and the cultural obsession with instant results when what's often required is patience. I will also go over our collective short attention spans and why longer attention spans are needed for understanding complex issues like this. Every answer won't fit in a 15 second soundbite. At the end of the day, we'll have to pray, wait, and see. Some of the smartest plays take time to unfold.—https://noblegoldinvestments.com/learn/gold-and-silver-guide/?utm_campaign=21243613394&utm_source=g&utm_medium=cpc&utm_content=&utm_term=noble%20gold&seg_aprod=&ad_id=698073353663&oid=2&affid=1&utm_source=google&affiliate_source=googleads_brand_bmbc&utm_term=noble%20gold&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADQ2DzJSJ_mi5cJo8dO2FNUs7uNy-&gclid=CjwKCAjwktO_BhBrEiwAV70jXtjSCyioSM2Hz1McTAlR3f8t3KCDDN3-XBWLaIzwJmiEGe0ztxIk5RoCnM0QAvD_BwE

In this episode of Passing Judgment, we delve into the legal complexities of President-Elect Trump's proposed tariffs. Jessica Levinson explores how power over foreign commerce has shifted from Congress to the President, highlighting key laws like the Reciprocal Trade Agreements Act of 1934 and the Trade Act of 1974. The episode also covers President Biden's controversial pardon of his son, Hunter Biden, examining the constitutional power of presidential pardons, historical precedents, and political implications. Here are three key takeaways you don't want to miss:1️⃣ Congressional Abdication of Trade Powers: Jessica Levinson points out that Congress has gradually ceded its constitutional authority to regulate foreign commerce to the executive branch over the past century. 2️⃣ Legal Hurdles for Trump's Proposed Tariffs: Despite President-elect Trump's promises to impose sweeping tariffs on countries like Mexico, Canada, and China, there are significant legal and procedural hurdles to clear. These include mandatory investigations by the Department of Commerce, and potential court challenges under doctrines like the major questions doctrine and nondelegation doctrine.3️⃣ Presidential Pardons and Political Implications: The episode delves into President Biden's pardon of his son, Hunter Biden, explaining the broad and exclusive presidential power to grant pardons for federal crimes. Today on Sojourner Truth: Haiti is yet again in revolt with tens of thousands of protesters across hitting the streets on Sunday, June 9,, followed by general strikes on Monday, June 10, and Tuesday, June 11. Several protesters were killed and many others injured. Protesters are continuing their demand that the U.S.-backed President of Haiti, Jovenel Moise, step down. His government, along with the two previous administrations, have been implicated in an official report about the disappearance of over $4 billion dollars from Venezuela that was meant to assist the Haitian people. A journalist covering the corruption scandal was killed in a targeted assassination. Additionally, a series of brutal massacres and targeted assassinations have affected communities opposed to Moise, as well as community leaders. The massacres have been the largest since the days of the brutal Duvalierist dictatorship. The U.S. has warned against traveling to Haiti. We speak with journalist and Haiti expert Kevin Pina. In Los Angeles, four people were killed by police on the same day. Whats going on? For our Campaigners for Black Lives series, our guest is Joseph Williams, a campaigner with Black Lives Matter Los Angeles. Laura Carlsen joins us to give reaction to the deal between the Trump administration and Mexico to crack down on migrants passing through Mexico to reach the U.S. border. Also, an update on the uprising in the Sudan. Our guest is Khalid Mustafa Medani.

Even as he again hailed his administration's last-minute, much-heralded deal on Friday with Mexico as a "successful agreement" to address illegal immigration at the southern border, President Trump on Sunday bluntly suggested he might again seek to impose punishing tariffs on Mexico if its cooperation falls short in the future. On this week's episode of Tape Talk, Quint and Daniel review the recent volatility around Mexico Tariffs and speculations surrounding the Federal Reserve's next moves. The Mexico Front Tariffs and trade wars have still been in the news as of late but the battlefield may have shifted. Recently the President announced increasing tariffs on goods from Mexico in an effort to ward off illegal immigration by persuading the country into complying with requests to take a more active role in deterring the flow of people across the border. A Battle On Many Fronts The news about Mexico isn't just about the potential tariffs but the reality that tariffs may be the bargaining chip with other countries beyond China moving forward. As the message soaks in that the trade war has moved beyond just a spat between the US and China, companies and investors alike must consider the ramifications for any products and materials brought in from overseas. The Copper Tell While the economic outlook is not currently bleak it's important for investors to watch for changes. Quint gives investors a look at what he's watching here to keeps tabs on the evolving economic outlook to take action with early signs of changes ahead.

World leaders've gathered on the beaches of Normandy, France to mark the 75th anniversary of the D-Day invasion. In speeches, French President Emmanuel Macron and President Trump praised the soldiers, sailors and airmen, the survivors and those who lost their lives. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the D-Day fighters "took a gamble the world had never seen before." Sudan’s pro-democracy leaders say they'll keep up their civil disobedience campaign until the ruling military council is ousted and killers of protesters are brought to justice. The African Union has suspended Sudan from all AU activities over the deadly military crackdown on protesters. Mexican and U.S. officials are scrambling to stop threatened U.S. tariffs on Mexican imports before they're to take effect Monday. Trump says a "lot of progress" must be made to halt the taxes. Mexico's president is planning to hold a "unity" rally in Tijuana on Saturday to "defend the dignity of Mexico."

Fiat Chrysler Scuttles Renault Merger, Mexico Tariffs Loom Large For The Auto Industry

Daily Detroit

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 6, 2019 13:36

Welcome to a very Motor City-centric edition of your Daily Detroit. Today, we’re running down a pair of big stories from the auto industry, speaking with Kristin Dziczek, vice president of the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor. First up: Fiat Chrysler has withdrawn its $35 billion proposal to merge with French automaker Renault just 10 days after FCA first announced the proposal. It comes after the Renault board on Wednesday failed to reach a decision on the proposal, citing the French government’s request to postpone a vote. The Wall Street Journal also reported that Nissan’s two representatives on the Renault board also objected.  Renault owns a stake in Nissan as part of a long-running alliance with the Japanese automaker, while the French government owns a 15% stake in Renault. Fiat Chrysler’s board met Wednesday evening and voted to withdraw its proposal with immediate effect, saying that although it remains convinced of the compelling rationale for the merger, “it has become clear that the political conditions in France do not currently exist for such a combination to proceed successfully.”  Secondly, we discuss the news that President Trump may levy 5% tariffs against all goods imported from Mexico starting next week and gradually ramp them up to as high as 25%. As Dziczek explains, that’s problematic for a host of reasons, since automakers source many components including wire harnesses from Mexico for cars sold in the U.S., and about 15% of cars sold domestically were actually built at factories south of the border. Even for consumers, there’s a good chance that those replacement windshield wipers or brake pads you buy from O’Reilly’s were made in Mexico. It’s a fascinating conversation. Thanks for listening to Daily Detroit. If you like what you’re hearing, tell a friend about us, leave us a review and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, or support us by becoming a Patreon member.

***  So I started with the idea that illegal aliens are "exports," and as such are commodities that can have tariffs to help pay our Treasury for them, and to raise the cost of goods coming out of Mexico to punish Mexico for being nothing but a transit waypoint on the journey to U.S. welfare.  30 minutes in we had a great discussion with Kirke over the naming of a local bridge.  It's amazing how much passion can go into local issues.  In the second hour, Josie joined in talking about the assault at the Rep. Matt Gaetz rally, the 10 Action Radio comprehensive immigration bills, the idea to create an 11th bill to eliminate the classification "undocumented," by not allowing anyone into the country who is "undocumented," and make them go back and get their Documents!!!  A whole lot of surprises, spontaneous outbursts, new commercials including my book, and an idea for a new comedy travel ad for the "caravans."  This was a great show! President Trump says he is placing a 5% tariff on all Mexican imports, effective June 10, to pressure Mexico to do more to crack down on the surge of Central American migrants trying to cross the U.S. border. He says the percentage will gradually increase — up to 25% — “until the Illegal Immigration problem is remedied.” Mexico's president says his foreign relations secretary will lead a delegation to seek a negotiated solution. Hungary's foreign minister says underwater visibility is "practically zero" in the Danube River where a sunken tour boat that was filled with South Korean tourists is located. He says the wreckage is more than 20 feet under water..and the river's expected to keep rising because of rainfall. Several people've been been confirmed dead and others are still missing. Eight kids are sharing the title at the Scripps National Spelling Bee after bee organizers ran out of words that could challenge them. The ending was unprecedented in the 94-year history of the bee.
