Cian T. McMahon is an associate professor of history at University of Nevada-Las Vegas. His research focuses on the history and identity of the Irish Diaspora. In this interview, he discusses his new book The Coffin Ship: Life and Death at Sea during the Great Irish Famine (NYU Press, 2021), a social history of migration during the Great Irish Famine (1845-55). Drawing primarily on migrants' diaries and letters, The Coffin Ship reconstructs the experience of leaving Ireland by sea during the cataclysm of the Famine of the late 1840s and early 1850s, when approximately 2.2 million people left Ireland. With chapters examining “Preparation”, “Embarkation”, “Life”, “Death”, and “Arrival”, McMahon not only provides an intimate account of migrant experiences but also places this migration into its British imperial and Atlantic contexts, tracing maritime routes from Ireland to Liverpool and from there to Quebec, the United States and Australia. McMahon's book also investigates popular memories of the Famine, not least the assumption that the “coffin ships” that passed back and forth between Ireland and Eastern Canada were sites of mass death. The Coffin Ship is published by NYU Press as part of their new Glucksman Irish Diaspora Series. This is the dramatic story of 68 soldiers in the US Army's Second Ranger Battalion, Company D — "Dog Company" — who made that difference, time and again. From D-day, when German guns atop Pointe du Hoc threatened the Allied landings and the men of Dog Company scaled the sheer 90-foot cliffs to destroy them; to the slopes of Hill 400, in Germany's Hürtgen Forest, where the Rangers launched a desperate bayonet charge across an open field; to a "quiet" section of the Ardennes, where Dog Company suddenly found itself on the tip of the spear at the Battle of the Bulge; the men of Dog Company made the difference.  1944 EMBARKATION

Hear about a cruise to Greenland as the Amateur Traveler talks to Rebecca Merrell from manopause.com about this rugged and rapidly changing country. https://amateurtraveler.com/cruise-to-greenland/ Why should someone do a cruise to Greenland? Rebecca succinctly says, “Someone should do a cruise to Greenland if they're looking to go somewhere remote without a lot of people and if they have an interest in the Arctic.” The cruise itinerary is: Day 1: Departure from Iceland Travelers fly from Iceland or Denmark to Greenland. Arriving in Greenland, travelers land at Kingirlasuak, a former U.S. base that now serves as a large airport in Greenland. Embarkation on the “Ocean Albatross,” the cruise ship operated by Albatross Expeditions. Day 2: Sisimiut The cruise reaches its first destination, Sisimiut, the second-largest city in Greenland after Nuuk (the capital). Sisimiut, which means “foxhole,” has a rich history dating back thousands of years, including various indigenous cultures and traditions. Travelers have the opportunity to explore the town, its colorful buildings, and visit local museums showcasing Greenlandic history and culture. Day 3: Qeqertarsuaq, Disko Island The cruise continues to Qeqertarsuaq, a former capital of North Greenland located on Disko Island. Travelers have the chance to explore this picturesque town, famous for its abundance of icebergs in Disco Bay.  Day 4: Uummannaq The cruise heads further north, reaching Uummannaq, north of the Arctic Circle. Uummannaq Island is known for its heart-shaped mountain and offers unique cultural experiences. Activities include hiking to the Santa Claus house. Day 5: Eqip Sermia Glacier The ship sails to the Eqip Sermia Glacier (“The Glacier at the end of the fjord”), a breathtaking location known for its massive ice formations. Travelers witness the natural spectacle of ice calving, where chunks of ice break off and plunge into the sea. The changing hues of blue in the ice, caused by varying oxygen levels, create stunning visual displays. Day 6: Ilulissat The cruise arrives at Ilulissat, the third-largest town in Greenland. Ilulissat is known as ‘the Iceberg Capital of the World'. The town is famous for its UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Ilulissat Icefjord, where enormous icebergs calve from the Sermeq Kujalleq Glacier at an astonishing rate (100 feet per day or 20 million tons of icebergs). Travelers have the option to explore the icefjord by small boat and marvel at the towering ice formations. Day 7: Sarfannguit The cruise reaches Sarfannguit (“the place with the little stream:), a very small settlement with approximately 40 residents. Travelers visit the community center, where they can purchase local crafts, such as beadwork, paintings, and other products. The unique monument, a modern glass igloo, is also worth a visit. Day 8: Return to Kangerlussuaq The cruise returns to Kangerlussuaq, the point of embarkation, where travelers disembark. This marks the end of the expedition. Throughout the cruise, travelers have the opportunity to hear lectures on Arctic topics, hike, museum visits, and interact with local communities. The stunning Arctic landscapes, icebergs, glaciers, and wildlife, including birds and marine mammals, provide a constant backdrop to this unforgettable Greenlandic adventure.

This episode carries content warnings for body horror, mass death/genocide, mind control, and extreme heat.  For months, even before the sun bulged red, the only way to think about events on Palisade was with large numbers. Troop maneuvers. Logistical networks. Centuries of oppression. A continent of power. But now all of that has collapsed. Now it is minutes, not hours. Meters, not miles. Guards, not battalions. A set of hallways. A set of doors. A set of people trying to breach them. And beyond them, a question: Tomorrow, will there be any events on Palisade at all? I step all around the pieces on the floor / Wires and cords, and records, and tapes Dossier People Stargrave Elcessor (she/her): Leader of the Bilateral Interecession's occupation of Palisade, assigned personally by Cynosure Whitestar-Kesh. As a Stargrave, she has been granted the means and “right” to detonate the star at the center of Palisade's star system if she determines that those here are an existential threat to the Principality. Connadine (he/him): Commander of the BIS on Palisade. An expert in psychological operations and folklore. As a composer, his opus is the Adagio, a plan to get everyone on Palisade operating in ways not only predictable, but scripted. As a conductor, his orchestra now turns towards the second movement. Routine Rennari (he/him): Half-Apostolsian, scion of a minor Kesh noble house, and the Blue Channel's heavy.  Mustard Red (she/her): A cyborg who once served as a member of Brink Proxy, with a speciality in surveillance. Joined the Cause during the Devotees expansion onto Palisade. Midnite Matinee (she/her): Leporine scout and member of the Blue Channel. She and her trusty Pack-model light AutoHollow Popcorn used to run a repo company, but now are tentatively committed to the Cause and Millennium Break. Factions STEREOMA: Pact truebeliver Cor'rina Corrine (cor/cors, they/them) and cor rival Misericorde (he/they) have begun building a surgical, anti-Bilat hit squad on Paliade.  The Pact of Free States: One of the two factions vying for leadership of the Principality, a joint operation by Stels Columnar and Apostolos. The New Asterism: What was once a schism between Received and Progressive Asterism has now been healed by the false prophet Gur Sevraq (he/they), or at least someone in his name and face. The New Asterism claims that to be a citizen of the Principality is to have an obligation to "better the world," in the sense that one invests in property or in the way that a settler “rehabilitates” or “improves” the places they claim by violence.  Places Chimera's Lantern: The second moon of Palisade, shaped oddly like a wasp's nest or paper lantern. New arrivals to the world find its occasional glow unnatural and frightening. Thisbe and the Figure found evidence that it could be tied to driving the bulk of ancient Divine Principality forces off of Palisade. Home to the Chimeric Cadent (they/them, it/its), an amalgam of the ancient Excerpt ⸢Signet⸣, the mysterious Waking Cadent, and the Divine Belgard. As one being, they protect the corpses of a number of Divines, including Sagacity, Dissent, Felicity, Barricade, and Bounty—its newest resident. Objects Gambeson: The Gambeson is only about 10 meters tall (less than half an Altar), but it is nevertheless a terrifying scourge of the battlefield. Modeled after an iron maiden, except with it's tortorous doors attached to its back serving as wings. Its head features a metalworked face, twisted into extreme and offputting smile.  Its skeletal frame serves not only as body, but cage: pilots are criminal conscripts forced to pay off their “debt” to Kesh by the Divine Plight, earning their freedom through combat achievements. Paramerion: Cori's new Altar, as designed by her brother Formido. Constantly twitching and rippling underneath the regal embellishments of its filigreed armor. Massive metallic wings stay folded on its back, a smaller pair cover its eyes like a visor and the sickles jut out from its forearms when stowed. A halo shaped like a crown rotates above its skull-like head. The Stellar Combustor: A weapon of immense destruction, capable of destroying countless star systems if deployed without a firebreak. Has been used in some form or another since the time of the earliest Divines. In current form they take the form of a twirling, 3-ringed space station that rotates around a system's sun.  BAC Secateurs: Designed and built on Chimera's Lantern by the Blessed Armory of Consecration, an Altar who holds itself in the form of a tortured saint, with sharp, crystaline “holy expressions” emerging from its body, like wounds in reverse. As it pulls these from its body, its form glows like heated glass, then reverberates back into place.  Divines The Divine, Arbitrage (it/its): The amoral machine turned de facto treasurer keeps the Frontier Syndicate a step ahead in all matters of commerce. Sole minter of “glint,” a newly popular currency on Palisade. The Divine Plight (she/her): Plight is a 40 meter tall, humanoid Divine cast in black metal armor, and wearing the of a judge or inquisitor. She conscripts the guilty into her army as Gambeson pilots, compelling their loyalty with terrible, Divine feelings of guilt. Hemlock, whose interest is fundamentally in punishment and not justice, was born heir to a mid-tier Kesh House, but jumped at the chance to become an Elect. The Divine Consecration: Though humanoid in shape, like most Nideo Divines, its chest is a vacuous cavity that serves a living forge. This open wound burns brightly, and Consecration can reach inside of it to produce a range of objects, or a sort of Divine molten metal which rapidly hardens as it is shaped by the Divine. But this is only half of its fearsome nature. Guided by the hand of its elect, a Sovereign Immunity devoutly committed to his role as armorer, Consecration also operates as Nideo's chief weaponsmith, Altar designer, and forge.  The Divine Souciance: When the burgeoning Divine Principality left Palisade behind, the Divine Souciance carried doubts about the project. So bloody was the Embarkation, so strenuous the objection of those who opposed the Glass Duchy's rule, that Souciance—ever committed to careful consideration and compassionate concern—never found their place in the Empire, however grand the vision Nideo had presented before his death was. But, devoted to steady study, Souciance played their part for generations. It was not until the Divine Clash that they came to their decision: They could not be part of an empire so vast, so terrible, so cruel. And so they sought out a place where they could do what Divines no longer could. They sought out a grave. Mysteries The Iconoclasts: Something beyond the human, desperate to eradicate subjectivity itself. After their messenger, the Usher of Truth, was delivered to The Witch in Glass, they have found themselves serving a new master. Axioms: Once, these beings were made by a so-called "Post-Divine" as embodiments of particular ideals, supposedly detached from mortal perspective or subjectivity. Now, they are the emanation of one woman's ideals, given perfect, violent form. In this way, The Ingrate is the first of its kind. Perennial (she/her):  The Principality's so-called 'adversary,' who lives at the center of the galaxy and whose chaotic whims spread through her "Perennial Wave," an ever-present nanoparticle that has recently bonded with Kalmeria. This episode carries content warnings for vomiting, mass death/genocide, mind control, manipulation, body horror, forced body modification, and extreme heat.  They arrive in the long rings of the Stellar Combustor to no greeting, and this they are thankful for. The path to their objective is known, but what lies on it (and what they'll find at its end) are not. As they travel the length of the arc, spanning half the circumference of the sun, they wonder: How are their friends, now traveling through lunar shadow, far across the solar system? How are their comrades? Might they find freedom in the dark as we search for it in the searing light? Futures tricked by the past / Spectre, how he laughs Dossier People Stargrave Elcessor (she/her): Leader of the Bilateral Interecession's occupation of Palisade, assigned personally by Cynosure Whitestar-Kesh. Home to the Chimeric Cadent (they/them, it/its), along with the warded corpses of a number of Divines, including Sagacity, Dissent, Felicity, Barricade, and Bounty—its newest resident. BAC Secateurs: Designed and built on Chimera's Lantern by the Blessed Armory of Consecration, an Altar who holds itself in the form of a tortured saint, with sharp, crystaline “holy expressions” emerging from its body, like wounds in reverse. s2e29 History of Prints Claude Lorrain

Platemark

In s2e29, Platemark hosts Ann Shafer and Tru Ludwig talk about Claude Lorrain, the arbiter of landscape painting in the 17th century. He worked most of his life in Rome and elevated landscape as a subject up the academic hierarchy by including small figural groups and naming the compositions with mythological or biblical subjects. He's known by various names that can be confusing. He was born Claude Gelée in the independent duchy of Lorraine, which is why the French call him le Lorrain. The English, who collected his works assiduously and even now have the highest number of his works (by country), refer to him simple as Claude. He created an amazing cache of ink and wash drawings of each of his painted compositions in a first catalogue raisonné of sorts. He dubbed this book the Liber Veritatis («the book of truth»). Claude told his biographer Filippo Baldinucci that he kept the record as a defense against others passing off his work as theirs. This bound group of drawings was collected and owned by the Dukes of Devonshire from the 1720s until 1957 when it was given to the British Museum (in lieu of estate taxes upon the death of Victor Christian William Cavendish, the 9th Duke of Devonshire). While Claude died in 1682, his renown in England was enough to prompt the print publisher John Boydell to hire artist Richard Earlom to create prints after the drawings nearly one hundred years after Claude's death. Two hundred etchings with mezzotint were created between 1774 and 1777, and were published in two volumes as Liber Veritatis. Or, A Collection of Two Hundred Prints, After the Original Designs of Claude le Lorrain, in the Collection of His Grace the Duke of Devonshire, Executed by Richard Earlom, in the Manner and Taste of the Drawings.... Later, a third volume of an additional 100 prints was published in 1819. Earlom used etching to mimic Claude's ink lines and mezzotint for the wash areas. They were printed in brown ink to mimic iron gall ink. Hugely influential in England, the books were popular with collectors and were used by artists as models for copying. The Liber Veritatis also inspired J.M.W. Turner to produce a similar project of 71 prints after Turner's painted compositions, which he called Liber Studiorum. They may appear old fashioned to contemporary viewers, but rest assured, landscape was just getting its legs under it. Boring imagery? Maybe. But important for our story of the history of prints in the West. Episode image: Claude Lorrain (French, c. 1600–1682). Seaport with Ulysses Returning Chryseis to Her Father, c. 1644. WATCH THIS PODCAST ON YOUTUBE: https://youtu.be/msv-7m_sk4QOriginally started with barges to transport goods through Europe's rivers, River Cruises have grown in popularity over the past 50 years and only have between 150-300 passengers on board. Embarkation and disembarkation is much simpler than cruising on massive ocean cruises with thousands of passengers. You receive more personalized service, and with smaller ships, you are able to visit lesser known ports. Nomad Futurist is delighted to welcome Emma Grace Myers, sales representative for Honeywell Building Technologies in the Data Center Vertical, for a podcast episode focused on navigating the data center industry through the lens of the younger generation.Nomad Futurist had the pleasure of meeting Myers in Texas at a conference, and when we learned her story, we felt it fit in perfectly with what we've been trying to share with the world. In her own words: "I like to say this industry found me rather than the other way around.""I had the opportunity to intern with Honeywell in the summer of 2021, and I showed up on my first day to find out my assignment and what group I would be in, and they told me I'd be in the data center group. So my first question was great, what's a data center??"And so from that point on, Myers spent time learning about data centers and the ins and outs of Honeywell, including the players in the space, as well as the administrative side of things that come with any new job. When she first signed up for the internship, her goals were to gain experience with an organization with a broad reach."If I got to Honeywell, I figured I would have the opportunity to move around and find what my interests really were. And lo and behold, I find the data center industry very interesting. So I'm still here!"Myers is the youngest guest to join the Nomad Futurist podcast, so Phil and Nabeel asked her where she felt the significant gap is between younger audiences and this industry."There is a gap because it's not talked about. I had not heard the word data center before that first day at my internship, and if the word were out and people talked about it, I think that would gain interest in itself."Myers also opens up about what it's like being a minority in this industry."Being a young female in this industry, I found that really most every conversation that I have, I have to prove that I know what I'm talking about and work harder to gain someone's confidence in me."Myers says she's keeping an open mind for the future and is excited about the many industry opportunities ahead for her. The timing of this podcast also couldn't be any better, with Carrie Goetz launching her book- Jumpstart Your Career in Data Centers, which Myers has been using on her journey."Her book really explains things in a very simple way and gives definitions simple enough for me to start to connect all of the pieces."Emma Grace Myers is a sales representative for Honeywell Building Technologies in the Data Center Vertical and holds a B.S. in Industrial Distribution and a Business minor from Texas A&M University. Before joining Honeywell in January 2022, Emma Grace spent time in the roofing distribution industry, where she realized her passion lies in solution-based selling.

McMahon's book also investigates popular memories of the Famine, not least the assumption that the “coffin ships” that passed back and forth between Ireland and Eastern Canada were sites of mass death. The Irish Coffin Ship is published by NYU Press as part of their new Glucksmann Irish Diaspora Series. If you are a first time cruise passenger, there is actually a lot to know. In episode 10, we talked about Cruising 101 and how to prepare for your cruise. Today, we take things a step further and tell you everything you need to know to board your ship and have the perfect cruise. We talk about embarkation day. What to do when you first get on the ship. How to be prepared for the muster. How to communicate with your travel companions without breaking the bank. How to make sure you get booked for the shows and excursions you want. How not to get left at the port, and we even share a smart tip, so that you won’t end up getting off the ship in your pajamas.   Show Notes [01:57] Embarkation day. Time to get on the ship. [01:54] You may not have access to your cabin right away. Grab a map and get the lay of the land. [02:16] Learn what's on each level and where the pools and bars are. [02:33] It's your seven day home away from home. [02:53] You can grab lunch and look into booking services and reservations. Look into the shore excursions that you want to check out. It's important to book fast, because things can sell out. [03:42] Muster drills are like a fire drill for adults. You need to know how to get off of the ship if there is a problem. You are required to go to your muster point. Have your life jacket and plan on getting comfortable. Get there early and find a seat, if possible. [05:07] Most ships provide you with a daily newsletter. Some also have an app. [06:47] Highlight what you want to do. [07:14] There are excursions in a port of call. [07:34] Shore excursions are available on the cruise line website about six months in advance. [08:19] Di loves snorkeling. Chris loved going to Pompeii, walking through the ruins with a headset. It's like going back in time. [10:24] Hiking, shopping, and all kinds of adventures are available. [10:57] If you go on your own, the cruise line won't wait for you. [12:12] The ship is quiet when at shore. You can relax on the ship too. [12:49] Many cabins are equipped with phones. Most ships are cell phone friendly now. Check with your provider. Some ships have Wi-Fi. [14:19] Make sure you are in airplane mode when you step onto that ship. [14:55] Walkie talkies can also be an easy way to keep in contact. [15:18] The ship is a cashless system. [16:22] Have some cash for tipping or when you get off the ship. There is a currency desk, where you can get local cash. You can see your balance on the TV channel. [18:03] Flex or open seating options. Assigned seats with the same people. [19:00] Having the same waiter is one of Di's favorite parts of cruising. They treat you like royalty. [20:02] There is a buffet and a lot of fast dining options. [21:16] Celebrating special occasions. They have packages with decorations, cakes, etc. You can renew your vows or get married. [22:34] Tipping policies are different. You tip about $12 to $14 a day. You can get the automatic tips removed. These are for your steward and waiters. [24:58] After seven days you have to settle your itemized bill. Go through it and make sure it is correct. There is a long line on the last night. Take care of things beforehand. [26:32] It's going to take awhile to get the bags off of the ship. You need a carry on in your stateroom, so that you will have clothes for the morning. [28:12] Have a plan for transportation getting back home.   Links and Resources: Episode 10 Cruising 101 Get a Free Month of Audible and a Free Book WhatsApp   For pictures, tips and more, be sure to check out our Fly with Chris and Di Facebook page and signup to download a copy of The Best City for You.
