Andie Burke began college as an English major before jumping into a pediatric nursing career. Her writing is inspired by over a decade spent working in hospitals with patients of all ages. After the last couple years spent in the pandemic ER, she escaped to an outpatient pediatric sedation unit.Andie lives in a blue house in Maryland with an alarming number of books and an embarrassing number of ultra-fine point pens. When she's not writing, she's probably feeding snacks to the two small human creatures who live with her or trying not to kill her chaotic houseplants. In the 1950s, most single, white middle-class women were expected to marry and raise a family — much like their mothers before them. But becoming a flight attendant, or a "stewardess" as they were referred to then, offered another kind of life for young women — a life of adventure. From GBH's "American Experience" program, the new documentary "Fly with Me" showcases the firsthand accounts of the pioneering women, who historians argue, transformed the workplace — both in the air and on the ground. Co-director Sarah Colt describes the stewardesses featured in the film as women filled with "wanderlust," who were "interesting and engaged with pushing boundaries. These young women were drawn to an independent life of travel and glamor. But the airlines also imposed women-only job restrictions like weigh-ins, and deliberately excluded Black women. Under the Radar host Callie Crossley spoke with Sarah Colt, co-director of the film and Julia Cooke, author and historian, about the film and the role flight attendants played in the movement for gender equity in the workplace. GUESTS Sarah Colt, writer and co-director of "Fly With Me," an "American Experience" documentary and GBH production Julia Cooke, author and historian featured in "Fly With Me"
To reassure passengers who might feel that flying was dangerous, the first flight attendants were nurses. But as air travel grew safer, the industry promoted ‘lovely hostesses of the air' as part of the travel package. How did these young women fight sexist labor practices and power the women's movement? We talk with Kathleen Barry, an academic advisor to the new PBS documentary that tells the story: "Fly With Me." Dear Techno Travelers,As the world revolves, every beat and pulse ties us closer to moments of introspection and connection. This week, in the 69th edition of The Midnight Project, I invite you to a soulful exploration that takes us through the varied landscapes of techno. We embark with Victor Ruiz and Modeā's "Bloom," a track that feels like the first breath of spring, reminding us that there's a new beginning in every ending. Vikthor's collaboration with Galluxy brings a reflective piece titled "Mirror," reminding us of the dualities of life. And while the cosmic allure of Julien Jeweil's "Mars" (remixed by Charles D) pulls us into the expanses of the universe, Supermode's iconic "Tell Me Why" gets a fresh twist with AdamK and Vikthor steering the controls.AdamK and Vikthor return with their singular creation, "Don't Give In." It's a testament to our collective resilience, a call to remain steadfast in our passions. Mladen Tomic's "Fly With Me" elevates our spirit, and by the time Ignacio Arfeli urges you to "Feel The Bass," you're already levitating. As we transition, André Pillar's plea "Have Mercy" adds an emotional depth, matched in intensity by Josh Richards' "High Roller." Push's "Hysteron" is a hypnotic masterpiece, luring us deeper into the techno abyss.Space 92's "Time" reminds us of the relentless tick-tock of life, urging us to embrace every fleeting moment. As we conclude this audial journey, Yuuta and Ado (Col) offer a warm "Welcome To" their world, a fitting finale that promises more adventures. This week's journey is not just about the beats but also the spaces in between, the silences that speak volumes, and the echoes that linger long after. It's a testament to the transformative power of music, especially when we listen with open hearts.I hope this episode finds a special place in your soul. Life is a rhythm, and we're all dancing to it.Till next time, stay connected stay inspired.Special note: The universe of The Midnight Project awaits you at https://www.sebastiaanhooft.com. Dive deeper, connect with like-minded souls, and subscribe to ensure you never miss an episode. See you next Wednesday at 6 AM.With rhythms & resonance,Sebastiaan Hooft

On this episode of GET TO KNOW YOU, we discuss another thought-provoking topic; ‘How can we value our own vulnerability as much as we value it in others?'. This week, I'll be sitting down with Anthony Lazaro (IG @anthonylazaromusic). He is from Italy, currently living in Hamburg, Germany. He's a singer-songwriter with over 1,5 million monthly streams on Spotify and listeners all over the world, from India to Brazil, from the US to France. With his main project, he straddles the path between indie, R&B, jazz, and folk, trying to find a balance between all his different influences, ranging from Chet Baker to Devendra Banhart. His most beloved songs are Coffee Cup, a hymn to coffee and love and love and coffee, Gravity, a soft serenade about letting it all go and floating on a magical cosmic bed and Fly With Me, and Strangers in Disguise, a jazzy ballad among lovers in incognito. Anthony has a flirt going on with the sync world: his songs have been used by the show All American, the Amazon Prime show Russian Affairs and many others. Tune in as we discuss Anthony's inspiration for his music, a secret tour, vulnerability through generations and cultures; why do people feel shame when expressing joyful vulnerability? And, how to accept and embrace our vulnerable moments? Stay tuned to the end of the episode to find out how you can join the conversation on the Get To Know You Café.CreditsMusic- Sara Oliveira Support the show

Meldet euch bei Marco (marco@mercicherie.at) oder Alkis (alkis@mercicherie.at)

Kelly Yang’s middle-grade novel Front Desk (https://www.frontdeskthebook.com/) features the so-called “sandwich generation” of Chinese immigrants who came to North America in the 1980s-90s. Through the eyes of ten-year old Mia Tang, we grasp the multi-faceted experiences of struggling immigrants, while holding out hope for the better. Lin's new book FLY WITH ME is available for pre-order now! books2read.com/flywithme Question of the episode: What’s your experience with learning about the world—history or geography, for example—from fiction? Heidi Stemple (@heidieys) is the author of COUNTING BIRDS: THE IDEA THAT HELPED SAVE OUR FEATHERED FRIENDS. This true story of Frank Chapman, the man who founded the first annual bird count, pays homage to a simple act of shaking up habits and traditions that resulted in a lasting conservation initiative that continues today thanks to the help of hundreds of citizen scientists. Heidi is also the co-author, alongside Jane Yolen, Adam Stemple, and Jason Stemple, of FLY WITH ME: A CELEBRATION OF BIRDS THROUGH PICTURES, POEMS, AND STORIES. FLY WITH ME is a nonfiction book unlike anything I’ve seen before. Not only are the photos stunning page after page, but there are also new, original poems included throughout the book. The book has a presence and layout the appeals to curiosity and invites readers to explore its rich content any which way the reader pleases. Two beautiful bird books and an invitation to go owling! This is the audio portion of the last live show I did on April 29. You can watch the video of it here. The next live show is on May 13 at 5:00 PM Pacific time. Watch here. My guest will be pilot/author Alex Stone. We will discuss his darkly comic "Hauling Checks" - a novel that takes the reader inside the world of the nighttime, shady operators of "Checkflight", a fictitious, but not entirely unrealistic, company of bad actors in the aviation world. It's part "Catch-22", part "Fear and Loathing..." and nothing like any of the "Fly With Me" stories I produce. This should be a fun one! Oh - the first two callers to the show via Skype will receive a free copy of Alex's book! (or you can buy one yourself at www.hauligchecks.com)
This episode is a bit different. I produced it together with Joe D'Eon from the wonderful Fly With Me podcast. Together, we explored the question of how aerodynamic lift really works - in other words: why airplanes fly. He went out and asked a fellow pilot about what he thinks how lift works. I went to the University of Stuttgart's Intitute for Aero- and Gasdynamics and talked with Thorsten Lutz. He explained the details of how it works. If his explanation still doesn't do it for you, take a look at Wikipedia. They have a couple of nice illustrations.
