Dave Olsen, president and chief investment officer of Jump Trading Group, joined this week's “What Goes Up” podcast to discuss his firm's investment in cryptocurrency markets, and why it spent $320 million to rescue a project called Wormhole after hackers made off with 120,000 tokens known as “wrapped Ether.” Learn more about your ad-choices at https://www.iheartpodcastnetwork.com
Jump Trading is one of the deepest-pocketed firms operating in the crypto market. Jump put its full scale on display earlier this month when the firm stepped up to cover hundreds of millions of dollars in losses after Wormhole—a DeFi project to which Jump contributes code—was hacked. In this episode of The Scoop, Jump president and CIO Dave Olsen explained how the firm reacted to the hack and market-bought more than $300 million in ETH to cover the losses. "This was not a syndicate or a group of folks that pool resources to go out and purchase 120,000 ether," he said, explaining: "We did debate that but what led to such a swift conclusion was what we felt that we would have a bigger impact on the community by immediately being able to tell everything that their assets were backed one-to-one and step up and kind of lead the community." Once a secretive equities trading operation, Jump Trading has become more public-facing in a bid to grow its presence in the crypto market. During this episode, Olsen dove into details that have not been historically talked about publicly—including Olsen's view on what is important in market making in both crypto and traditional markets. In Olsen's view, connectivity to as many venues as possible is one of the three "building blocks" for being successful as a market maker. "You've got to be involved and connected to and able to trade pretty much everywhere that instrument trades," he said. In addition to connectivity, you also need ample capital, he said. "So connectivity, scale, and then the ability to analyze all the information you're getting and translate that into your best prediction of what should the price be for that asset at that moment in time? Those are really the three building blocks.” Episode 13 of Season 4 of The Scoop was recorded remotely with The Block's Frank Chaparro and Dave Olsen, President & Chief Investment Officer at Jump Trading Group. Today on our show we feature an interview with Dr. Dave Olsen who is the Co-director of the Center for Criminal Justice Research, Policy and Practice and a professor in the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology at Loyola University Chicago. Today we discuss a research brief he published in July of this y ear titled "Arrests in Illinois for Illegal Possession of a Firearm, Examining the Characteristics and Trends in Arrests for Illegal Possession of a Firearm Within the Context of Crime Involving Guns." Olsen's research lays bear the propaganda that the Illinois General Assembly uses through the naming of their bills to drive the public's fear of crime and exploit it to increase sentences for non-violent crime. The research also details how despite the rhetoric around gun possession and the attempts by Mayor Lightfoot, Superintendent David Brown, and Fraternal Order of Police President John Catanzara to equate gun possession as a violent crime very few of those arrested with gun possession are charged with an associated violent crime. Almost 90% of those that are arrested for possession with a felony conviction in their history actually have been convicted of a non-violent offense, mostly drug related. Olsen also details that despite all the hype by politicians trying to exploit the violence in Chicago under Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx's time in office the sentences for possession have actually be longer than they have be throughout the rest of the state. This goes against all the reporting you see in the media and all the bloviating you hear from Alderpeople like Raymond Lopez (15), Nick Sposato (38), and Anthony Napolitano (41). You can also count in this group politician want to be Paul Vallas and Bob Fioretti. There is never a violent event that any of these people will not try to exploit. Video from today's show

Did you know that cob is one of the oldest building materials around? According to my guest, Dave Olsen, most cob houses are tiny houses because they take so long to build! Cob is a mixture of clay, sand, straw, and water that hardens into a thick, load-bearing, structure. Think curved, earthen walls and whimsical building shapes. Dave Olsen has been building with cob for over 20 years and has developed his own technique, called “Fast Cob”. Dave tells us about the benefits of Cob building, how to do fast cob, and more. A lot of small business owners struggle with getting accurate financial information because it requires specific knowledge, accuracy, and more than anything, time. And they can’t afford a full-time CFO or even a bookkeeper to do the work… so they end up feeling stuck and struggling when it comes to taking control of the financial health of their business. Dave Olsen and Shane Rowley, Co-founders of Nimbl Accounting Services, both know the pains of running a small business all too well. They also know how crucial it is to get accurate financial information to make the best decisions to grow your business. Helping small business owners has always been their passion and led them to start Nimbl. A full-services accounting company that serves NPE clients in the USA & Canada. Dave started his career in public accounting and served as CFO to many start-up and venture companies in Canada. Shane, on the other hand, started as a tax specialist in Utah and helped small business owners save on taxes. Dave and Shane met three years ago when Dave was already up and running with a new business model for providing all kinds of financial services to many small companies. They saw a huge demand helping small business owners solve accounting and finance challenges and they officially rebranded to become what Nimbl is today. Dr. Ashley Joves is building her own dental practice, SMILE & CO., from scratch. For weeks she has been recording and publicly broadcasting her experience all over the internet. The journey has been difficult, rewarding, and revolutionary all at once. Although the path has been tough so far, she is determined to create the startup of her dreams. Join Dr. Ashley Joves and Michael Arias as they document the whole entire process of creating a dental practice, the areas to watch out for, and the emotional connotations of being a female entrepreneur.Time-Stamped Show Notes [0:40] Michael reminds us about Ashley Joves and her departure from working as an associate to creating her dream practice from scratch. [01:43] Ashley describes what has happened since episode 58. Her permits were accepted while she was attending a dental convention in Vegas. [3:25] Ashley discusses Dave Olsen, her wonderful contractor, in addition to how she found a contractor and how she began the processes of building her own practice. [4:10] The life of a contractor: With information found on chron.com, Michael explains how contractors bid for jobs. The process involves investigating the project, pricing out materials, comparing the project with past work, working out licensing and other factors, and presenting the resulting estimate to the potential client. [06:50] Check out markupandprofit.com to calculate how much you should pay for a contractor. Michael suggests that you shouldn't go cheap or choose contractors based on price. [8:33] Ashley describes her building and some pricing factors involved in building her practice. [10:32] Every day, Ashley responded when asked whether she questions the scope of what she's doing. [12:30] A lot of the time, you don't what kind of patient base you're getting. There's definitely a lot of risk involved in startups. [13:10] Learn about how Ashley found her dream building! [15:00] #DoYourResearch: Cole Sweatt, Ashley's real estate broker from tricommercial, has fantastic experience and skills. His client list and affiliations are also impressive. Always research before you hire! [16:52] Ashley and Michael discuss what happens between hiring a contractor and demolition day. [18:00] Te average debt for dental school students is $350,00+. An NYU graduate, Ashley is trying to accrue as much of her debt as possible with the help of State Farm. [19:05] Michael emphasizes the importance of due diligence, or, he puts it, The stuff you don't think about. [20:00] Ashley cancelled her escrow because she wanted to invest more in her escrow account. Learn about her experience with soft deadlines and negotiating with a frustrated agent. [24:00] With her S Corporation, Ashley is officially the president of her company. [25:00] Ashley spent around $15,000 just for due diligence. [26:04] Ashley describes her experience finding and working with her designer, Tami Teel, who is a regular contributor to HGTV. [28:00] Don't forget about IT work! Tim VanDermyden will be working with Ashley on her practice. [29:29] You can teach yourself how to do anything on YouTube! Ashley created her own Wordpress site and figured out more just by using the internet. [30:20] Now that we're all caught up, Ashley describes the trenching process that was happening at the time of the podcast interview. [31:55] If you are thinking about doing a startup, this is a must, Ashley promises as she discusses breakaway seminars and saving money during the process. [33:55] You have to find a balance between what you want, what you need, and efficiency. [36:15] Ashley discusses using IKEA products in dental practices. There are definitely pros and cons. [38:04] Stressor Of The Week: Ashley's beloved WINEBAR concept is built around the experience of being comfortable and casual. Unfortunately, there is a federal patent and trademark on SMILEBAR dental and Ashley lost the name. [40:55] Ashley strongly recommends using a Trademark Electronic Search System (TESS) to see if a given concept or name has any patents or trademarks. [41:50] Use your resources, Ashley pleads. If you have any attorney friends, ask them for help or advice. [42:15] SMILE & CO. is Ashley's new practice name. She still hopes to work with small businesses and entrepreneurs in the area. Furthermore, she still wants to use the concept of creating an atmosphere that strays from the dreadful dentistry feel. [43:20] Finding the balance between family time and business time is extremely difficult for startups. Ashley's husband and boys are immensely supportive, but it is still a huge battle for her. It's a balancing act and there are sacrifices involved, she says. [47:08] Ashley explains the importance of patience in starting a business. [48:20] Michael emphasizes that although setbacks are expected, having a solid support and resource base is crucial. [49:15] Social media is an extremely important tool in marketing [49:40] Stick to your vision, Ashley says to those who want to start business. [50:00] Ashley describes what is soon to come for her practice. [51:30] Help Ashley! : What do you think Ashley should do to build her website? Should she watch YouTube videos and teach herself how to code, or should she outsource? Should it be dental specific? Send us an email at michael@thedentalmarketer.site if you have any helpful advice.3 Main Ideas Do your research! One of the most helpful aspects of Ashley's journey has been the team she has surrounded herself by. She attended meetings, took to the internet, and assembled a group of people who will help her create the dental practice she has always dreamed of. Learn about events in your area, check out reviews, and figure out what you need to move forward both now and in the future. You can teach yourself how to do anything through resources such as YouTube. Heck; Ashley might even learn how to code her own website. If you ever feel intimidated by a challenge with several multifaceted steps, remember that you can always figure it out yourself. Balancing family and work can be a challenge. For Ashley, this has been the toughest and most emotional facet of building her dental practice. As a women, spending time away from her two boys has been especially rough, considering the stigmas that surround working mothers. Make sure you have a strong support system around you and never forget to follow your aspirations.Help Ashley! No matter how intelligent or motivated we are, we will always have questions and issues when starting a new business. Ashley, for example, is struggling to decide how to build her website and what it should consist of. How do you think Ashley should build her website? Should she watch YouTube videos and teach herself how to code, or should she outsource? Should it be dental specific? Send her a Facebook message if you have any helpful advice, or even better email us at michael@thedentalmarketer.site for answers!Resource Of The WeekAshley strongly recommends looking up, working with, and just talking to Dr. Anissa Holmes. Today, a web page can be delivered to desktop computers, televisions, or handheld devices like tablets or phones. While a technique like responsive design helps ensure that our web sites look good across that spectrum of devices we may forget that we need to make sure that our web sites also perform well across that same spectrum. More and more of our users are shifting their Internet usage to these more varied platforms and connection speeds with some moving entirely to mobile Internet. This is a repost as Blogger.com spontaneously deleted the original post due to issues on their part. Let’s hope this one is more permanent. [Show Notes Link]Direct Download Link | | Direct download link The federal elections in Canada are the prime focus in today’s episode. Dave Olsen (podcaster – Canucks Outsider, Choogle On with Uncle Weed, etc.) chimes in with some audio detailing the election taking place on Monday, January 23rd. A newcomer to this country, he has a lot of good insight as to the process and the people involved from his perspective. Also, a brief mention about hockey and some email from listeners. Only three songs today as most of the time is spent talking about the election. Consider it an education rather than political discussion. [Show Notes Link]Direct Download Link | | Direct download link There are a few topics that we hit today that I wanted to glance over. This is the second episode this week in quick turn around fashion, but I’m getting the handle on this new mixer and feeling a lot better. Hopefully this makes up for the lack of episodes as a result of my sinus infection from last week. I hope to post another episode on Friday, if not by the weekend. Topics for today include a RadioZoom in Tech segment about some new things from Apple, Hockey Talk about the Canucks and Sidney Crosby, and some listener feedback. I also share a handful of stories in the mix of things. [Show Notes Link]Direct Download Link | | Direct download link It’s a bit late in the outgoing, but I guess you could call this my Christmas episode. I talk about a variety of things in this podcast. Holiday shopping, a little bit of hockey talk, and some email from fellow podcasters. Even got a little bit of Rebecca in on this episode. Remember, her birthday is on January 9th, so send me all your birthday wishes now to help make it a good one. Merry Christmas and thanks for listening! [Show Notes Link]Direct Download Link | | Direct download link Welcome to episode #50, eh? Today’s release marks an important announcement regarding the future of this podcast and music. As much as I love the coffee, I couldn’t help but make some observations about the coffee culture around Vancouver. I swear that none of the coffee chains and or establishments mentioned had any stake in this episode. Also, some audio feedback and email from listeners. And Apple responds regarding my lack of being listed in their iTunes Podcast Directory. [Show Notes Link]Direct Download Link | | Direct download link Today’s episode features a couple of plugs for other, Vancouver podcasts. I invite you to check out Dave Olsen’s Canucks Outsider podcast, especially if you are a Canucks hockey fan. Then a plug for the alt.cast, as Chris played a song from the Podsafe Music Network that I could just not resist. I also take a look at the Sony BMG issue regarding their DRM root kit debacle. Here are the links that I mentioned: – ZDNet UK: “Sony offers to replace rootkit CDs” – Times Online (UK): “Sony drops anti-piracy tool that lets in hackers” – idiotabroad.com: “CD’s affected by the Sony-BMG spyware” I also take a moment to do an update of how things have changed now that I live in Vancouver. I hope to make this an ongoing segment that I revisit from time to time. This isn’t just a whole new city for me, but it’s also a whole new country. The music: – The Appleseed Cast – hello dearest love – Tapes N’ Tapes – insistor – Cagey House – 1000+ – 46bliss – the way you are Please send an email or audio comment to radiozoom [at] gmail [dot] com.
