When she was a teenager, she dated the same guy for most of high school. I used to work at a movie theatre and I would save all my money and use it to buy him things. He loved video games so she saved up and for Christmas one year, bought him a PlayStation, tons of used video games, and a TV to play it on. It was way overkill but she was just trying to make him happy. She thought this was somebody that she was going to marry, she went to a small (less than 50 in my class) religious high school and just assumed that she would marry the first guy that she dated. So, he loved the gifts but then about three months later he broke up with her to date a woman whose sister he dated before her. She was so devastated, She told him that he couldn’t tell anyone for at least a month that they had broken up and had to return the PlayStation/tv. So, he had his Mom bring in everything and hand it to her in a grocery store bag. She wouldn’t do that again, she feels bad about it now. A gift is a gift and she was just hurt. He ended up marrying that woman and having kids and she is thrilled for them. There is no way that it would have been a good idea for them to get married. He totally made the right call. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/revisionarypodcast/support

Have you struggled to get pregnant, or experienced miscarriages? Do you have a diagnosed (or suspected) underlying hormonal issue such as PCOS or endometriosis? If *any* of that is part of your experience, today's inspiring episode is for you. I'm talking to my friend and colleague, Ashley Looft, about her incredible journey towards a viable pregnancy after dealing with multiple miscarriages and hormone imbalances. You are GUARANTEED to learn something new (at least I did!) about what you can do when nothing else works. Ashley covers: 1) The importance of "cleaning up your gut" when you are trying to get and stay pregnant 2) The need for bioidentical progesterone for much longer in a pregnancy than most doctors are going to admit if you've previously had miscarriages 3) The fascinating and scientifically-supported option available if you are at your wits-end, that you more-than-likely have never heard of before Ashley bravely shares her experiences to help you find your way to carrying your dream baby to term. Ashley Looft is a Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioner who helps women experiencing fertility and cycle struggles dig deep to find the root of their struggles and uses nutrition, supplements, and lifestyle to support their bodies in healing so that they can live their most healthy, happy, and fertile life. She came to this work through her own struggles with PCOS, Endometriosis, and 4 pregnancy losses. Ashley was tired of going to the doctor and being told that her only options were the pill or to get pregnant so she decided to take matters into her own hands and apprenticed with Nicole Jardim to become a Women's Health Coach and then continued on to go to school for Nutritional Therapy. When Ashley is not working to help others she loves to spend time with her husband and two dogs traveling, reading, cooking, running, and hiking in the beautiful Arizona desert. You can find her online at wholehealthyhappylife.com or on social media @wholehealthyhappylife.

Ep 16 - Why (and How) to Hire Someone ASAP

Success + Money + Mindset

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 7, 2020 34:06

If you are a entrepreneur and thinking to yourself… I really want to expand, and I probably know I should hire someone, but I can't seem to pull the trigger - this episode is for you. Here are my TOP FIVE tips on hiring someone ASAP to really expand your business! Tip 1: Analyze your time. What brings you joy and/or is high vibe? Step 1 - Spend the next two weeks writing down all of the things you ACTUALLY did. You can log it in your calendar, like I do! Step 2 - Write, in your journal, how you felt after each activity. Did you feel invigorated? Motivated? Or did a specific task create stress and anxiety in your life? What made you feel like you were in a really high vibrational state? Whatever doesn't feel high vibe, I give you permission to actually delegate it. But of course, be honest with yourself. There's a difference between low vibe work, and work that is high vibe, but might make you uncomfortable. Being uncomfortable but GROWING isn't low vibe. If you're uncomfortable, like you have that nervous energy, and you do something and feel great afterward, that's high vibe. So while I give you permission to delegate ANYTHING you want, make sure you know what's high vibe and what's low vibe Tip 2: Before hiring someone, be clear on your to dos Before you hire someone (and as part of the first part of this exercise) -- you need to be crystal clear on what your highest value add activities. What are the few things you do exceptionally well? Where does your skillset lie? What talents, knowledge, or ideas do you have? Tip 3: Calculate your hourly rate: How many weeks per year do you want to work? 50 weeks? 44 weeks? For me, I want to work 10 months (basically take 2 months off), and I work 5 days a week, 8 hours a day (but you can cut this back to whatever you want) 44 weeks X 40 hours per week = 1,760 hours in total Now take your ideal salary (mine is $1m) and divide it by this number. $1m divided by 1,760 = $568/hour! So if I want to be the person who makes $1m/year, I need to value my time at $568/hour. What would I do differently if I knew how much my time was worth? Some examples: Taking uber rather than driving somewhere so I can get time back and work / study / meditate in the car Ordering food in rather than walking 20 minutes to pick it up, and I get 20 minutes more of work Hiring a cleaning person to clean my house so I can workout on a Saturday morning, or call my family/friends, rather than having to spend my time cleaning Tip 4: Where to hire someone? www.Upwork.com www.Fiverr.com www.Freelancer.com www.99designs.com Tip 5: When starting out, use contractors, or part time, or just a virtual assistant When Ashley and I hire a new person, we start them off on a 90 day “trial period” and I know of a lot of entrepreneurs that do something similar Start with a VA! Have them pay your parking tickets, make reservations, etc. I think you'll find the whole process to be extremely fun and exciting when you actually get to a place where you're having someone help you with these things! Remember, hiring someone is about allowing yourself to be supported!!

When Ashley persuades her new husband Steve to leave snowy Canada and join her for a year Down Under, she looks forward to an easy transition. After all, Australia’s just Canada with more sunshine and strange animals, right? But they soon discover things aren’t so simple. Steve struggles to settle and Ashley fears he will come to regret both the move and the marriage – especially after she loses her wedding rings on Bondi Beach. Baffled, homesick and increasingly anxious (in a land renowned for ‘no worries’), she is preparing to return to Canada when Steve shockingly announces that he wants to stay in Australia. For the sake of her marriage and her happiness, Ashley must find an Australia she can belong to: she decides to travel the country, learn its history, decode its cultural quirks and connect with as many residents as she can meet. How to Be Australian is a remarkable memoir, at once familiar and faraway, that shines a fresh, funny and fascinating light onto the country we think we know.

We are happy to welcome Ashley Stanley as our guest for today’s podcast!  Ashley is the Humane Education Manager at Wayside Waifs, a no-kill animal shelter in Kansas City, Missouri.  She is joining us today to share her story and explain what she does in the classroom. She also describes the reality behind what it's like, working in an animal shelter, and she shares how she is navigating her journey right now as a white woman educator. About Ashley Ashley is a Certified Humane Education Specialist. She has given presentations locally and also across the United States, on topics that include using animals to support character development, using humane education to stop the cycle of violence, unlocking empathy, and understanding the similarities between pets and people. Ashley has been with the Wayside Waifs organization for the last five years, and she oversees the development and implementation of their Humane Education Program, which includes No More Bullying, and reaches more than 16 000 students each year.  About the Humane Education Program The Humane Education Program at Wayside Waifs is a curriculum with an innovative approach to ending the cycle of violence towards people and animals. About the Humane Education Program curriculum The Humane Education Program is being taught in 25 schools locally in Kansas City, as well as in other schools across the country. They developed the curriculum as a way to teach children in Kansas City, and it can also be purchased to be used anywhere else in the country. Not cut out for the public school environment Growing up, Ashley always wanted to get into education. She studied at college to become a music teacher but later realized that she was not cut out for the public school environment. So, she began looking for alternative avenues for education and started doing before and after school programs and summer camps at the YMCA. Getting burned out After spending several years working for the YMCA, she got burned out and developed compassion fatigue. So she left her job without having anything else lined up. Compassion fatigue She explains that it’s quite common for people working in non-profits to develop compassion fatigue because they are trying so hard to give back, and non-profits require a lot of hard work for very little pay.  Being a humane educator was more than she thought it would be When Ashley saw the position for a humane educator posted at Wayside Waifs, she decided to check it out, even though she had no idea of what it entailed. She went into it with the idea that she would get to work with kids and around cute animals, and she loved that. However, it turned out to be way more than she ever thought it would be. The reality of working at an animal shelter     Working at an animal shelter, you see a lot more than cute, furry animals. You also see lots of neglected animals and animals in pain, so it’s hard not to allow it to affect you, no matter how strong or stoic you are. She learned a lot, very quickly  Ashley went into the animal welfare world with no professional experience of ever having worked with animals. She learned a lot, very quickly, and she became very good at compartmentalizing the terrible things she was seeing.  Finding a balance between the best and the worst of things Now, five years in, Ashley is still learning a lot. She explains that with animal welfare, you see the worst things in the world, but you also get to see the best things. She finds that being part of the magical things that happen there tends to balance the terrible things out, and it makes them a little easier for her to swallow. Incredible training for dog walkers At Wayside, they do some excellent training. They make sure that all their dog walkers are confident and feel comfortable with the dogs. Walking into the lion’s den Ashley is more confident with the dogs now than ever before, and she has learned a lot about energy management, but even so, she still feels like she’s walking into the lion’s den sometimes when she walks into the kennels. Learning about communication  Ashley learned more about communicating with people, and more about herself and how to be a better communicator with the world around her, just by working in an animal shelter. One part of what she learned has come from working with the animals, and another part has come from being in the classroom with students. Five core values The program that Ashley teaches has five core values. They are responsibility, compassion, being humane, self-control, and integrity.  Learning to think differently Ashley wants to teach children to think differently about people and animals, to have more compassion for them, and to understand why they do the things they do. And she wants to help students and adults to have a better understanding of the world around them so that they can take better care of it. Getting involved and giving back If you want to get involved and help out in some way, you need to start by thinking about what motivates you and where your passion lies. Then, you will need to find organizations that you can support locally who are doing that work and get involved as a volunteer, spread the word, or contribute financially. What it Really Looks Like to Live Your Truth | EP 208: Ashley Abercrombie

There’s a lot of debate these days around the topic of masks…no, I’m not talking about Covid masks right now, I’m talking about the proverbial masks that a lot of us put on. Maybe we are putting on a mask that says that we think we’re perfect or our life hasn’t been hard, or maybe we’re hiding things in our past. Those masks can be so dangerous, but when we begin to remove those masks to reveal the deep layers of truth within us, that’s when we really come alive. My guest this week is Ashley Abercrombie, a writer, speaker, and author of the book Rise of the Truth Teller: Own Your Story, Tell It Like It Is, and Live with Holy Gumption. She’s also the cohost of the hilarious and helpful podcast, Why, Tho? and can be found basically wherever there is a coffee or a cheese board. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband and two sons. I had the absolute best conversation with Ashley. When I met her, I knew she was my kind of person. With no further ado, join me to hear more about Ashley and her mission. 6:00 – The Ashley Abercrombie 101 Ashley is an author, speaker, and podcaster.  When she was 21, she moved from the small town of Eden, North Carolina to Los Angeles where she met her husband and they had their first baby. Four years ago, they moved to Manhattan and had their second baby. Not long after, they realized how much they missed their home in California and decided it was time to move back to their beloved community there. Ashley has been writing since she was her little girl. Her best-selling author and chart-topping podcast were not overnight successes. Ashley has been writing since she was a little girl; hers has been a journey of 20 + years spent writing on lunch breaks, early in the morning, and late at night because she simply loves expressing herself through the written word. Writing has been a way for Ashley to process her own pain and serve the community around her. In her early 20s she became distracted from that calling and experienced a lot of pain, but was able to process it, recover, find her voice, and pursue writing and speaking full time. It took a long time for Ashley to understand how to put on her own oxygen mask first but take off her “performance” and “strong” mask to realize she couldn’t be strong all the time, every day. Especially in the Christian sphere, we can act like we need to show up with everything clean and tidy and that we can’t have messy stories, which is obviously a lie from the pit of hell. 11:36 – A Deep Wound, A Lifeline Growing up, Ashley and her brother spent a lot of time with their grandparents and great aunt while their parents worked. Ashley went to church with her great aunt every Sunday morning and brought flowers for the alter and opened the library for the pastor and church members. For Ashley, it represented a place where she could find respite and quiet from the noise of school and the hustle and bustle of trying to figure out everyday family life. When she was 16, Ashley decided to walk away from the faith community because as a teenager, she was struggling to relate to an older church crowd. At 21, while living in Los Angeles, Ashley came back to the church in one of her most broken moments. She found a community where she was loved and not judged. So many people grow up in the church but walk away from it at a young age, wrestling with their faith and what church looks like as an adult. We can absolutely be constantly wrestling with God and asking hard questions. There is so much shame around difficult conversations. Often the church makes judgements or avoids these conversations all together. The silence of shame became unbearable for Ashley and becoming more an more isolated worry what people would think about her but knowing she couldn’t tackle her struggles on her own. She started asking God where He was. One day she took a drive around Raleigh, NC and it started to storm. She started shouting at God and as she did, she felt flooded by the love the Holy Spirit had for her. She’d never experienced anything like it before, especially since she thought she had to have everything right before she could be loved by God. It was the first time she admitted to herself that she couldn’t hold things together, and certainly not on her own. It’s when she started to take the mask off and stopped caring what people thought about her. 21:30 – Leading with Story Recover communities lead with stories. The first thing you hear when you go to a meeting is other people’s stories. They also helped Ashley realize the things from her childhood that affected her as an adult. Ashley leads with stories in her book, the way she learned in recovery. It’s connective and teaches us that we’re not perfect. We don’t have to wear masks all the time, performing for each other. For the first time in her life, Ashley started to read the Bible and listen to sermons. She realized in the church she was fed a “victory narrative,” but when she took time to examine the lives of people in the Bible, she realized their lives were very hard and began to identify with the imperfection she was finally learning about. The Bible makes room for ALL people from all walks on life on all different journeys. Ashley realized she could finally stop trying to be perfect all the time because victories never came from easy times in the Bible. God uses imperfect, flawed people with imperfect, flawed stories. These biblical stories were literally the foundation of our faith and God’s plan! The more we own the dark parts of the story, the more healing it is for others who have parts of their stories they feel shame over. It’s easy for our shame to creep back in even in the midst of owning our stories in their entirety. God doesn’t lead us with shame or guilt or holding our past over our heads. We may have to reconcile our pasts, but you can identify that shame is not from God. It is not how we would speak to ourselves or anyone we love. We’re often expected in our cultures and societies to stay inside certain boundaries and stay in our little boxes. If we branch out from this, we’re told to get back in line. This is especially true for women in our culture. The reality of integrity is a deep commitment to being who we are, even when we’re working toward improving our lives. 32:47 – Consequences We can made mistakes and find freedom in forgiveness and repentance, but there may still be consequences to our actions. Even when David repents and has been forgiven, God tells him he will still have to face the consequences of what he did. When we’re brave enough to take off our masks and make mistakes and try again and do our best and be honest with our story, we give others the courage to do the same. We are supposed to value people as made in the image of God. It creates community here on earth as God designed it when we drop our performance narratives and allow our real stories to come through. 37:30 – Faith and Justice Ashley is passionate about social justice, fighting human-trafficking, and initiatives against mass incarceration. There’s a huge relationship between faith and justice and for many people in the world right now, they are waking up to it for the first time. Justice is the heart of God and goes hand to hand with righteousness in scripture. There is never a way we can hate our neighbor but say we love God. We can’t divorce our love of God from love of neighbor. When Ashley really started listening to people’s stories, she finally started to understand how unjust our systems are. God invites us to learn His ways in a relationship with Him that includes humanity. We must hold people and systems accountable to right damages and injustice that they create, which includes letting them feel the consequences of those actions.  God has a lot to say about injustice, over 300 scriptures as a matter of fact. We are to create righteous communities and connections, valuing all people in God’s image. 51:06 – A Prayer As we navigate the rest of the 2020, Ashley’s prayer for the world and for herself is that this would be a time for us to lean into what the Spirit says. 54:00 - Getting to Know Our Guest Find out what Ashley’s professional athlete hype song would be, how she’d prove she’s from the future if she could time travel, what she thinks we’ll be nostalgic for in 40 years, and a few of her guilty pleasures. Be sure to stay tuned to find out what it means to Ashley to run a business with purpose. (So Many) Memorable Quotes 10:26 “I believe that I have a voice and that it’s important that I use it. I believe that about every person, no matter our sphere of influence. I believe that God has created us so uniquely to speak and that we live in this very wild world that is looking for hope and looking for grace and looking for more nuance than our news narratives and social media narratives allow us to have.” 10:59 “I didn’t know how to let people in I didn’t know how to say, ‘I have needs too,’ and I just thought I could always be the fixer or the advisor, the one people came to, the strong one…you realize that falls apart at some point. I’m not strong all the time.” 11:19 “I had to go on a real journey of taking off my mask and getting real and stop pretending and performing and learn how to be in real relationship with people. We can be loved even though we’re broken.” 14:58 - “I’m still unlearning some of the things [in the church] that are cultural and not biblical. Even though I’ve been hurt in the church, and I think if you’re human you have and the church is not perfect (it has imperfect people in it), overall I really do love that gathering and the corporate worship, and being together.” 15:27 - “For me in some ways the church has been a deep wound, but it’s also been a lifeline.” 22:27 – “I have come to a place where I value so much more, integrity over image.” 23:32 “I really began to identify, and I began to allow myself to be imperfect because that is all I saw in the scripture … imperfection.” “The bible is so diverse and rich. It makes room for people. It makes room for people of all colors, all shapes, all sizes, all backgrounds, and I just began to cultivate a life that did that too.” 35:59 – “When you meet a free person, you feel free to speak…when you see a brave person stand up against injustice, it makes you feel brave. It makes you feel like there’s a normal person doing the right thing, so I can be a normal person doing the right thing instead of pretending this thing doesn’t exist.” “Our courage gives others courage. Our vulnerability allows space for vulnerability for others. Our love for humanity cultivates diversity, equity, opportunities for people to be together and I think that’s really what we’re here for.” 39:23 – “Justice is just not a trend. It’s the very heart of God. Justice and righteousness are present together in scripture.”   About Ashley Abercrombie: Ashley is a speaker and writer, whose work has been featured in various magazines and digital outlets, including Darling, OprahMag.com, Relevant, and Grit and Virtue. When Ashley entered high school she was the only one of her middle school friends to go to that particular high school. She found it really hard to make new friends and felt uncomfortable around all the new kids. The new kids maybe sensing Ashley’s vulnerability became more mean and standoffish which made it extremely hard for Ashley to create any meaningful friendships. This cycle pushed Ashley further into isolation and made for a very lonely high school existence. Ashley found writing to help sort out her feelings and a satisfying way for self expression. Ashley doesn’t blame all the other kids though for making her feel isolated — she acknowledges that there where things that she could have done to be more proactive in creating opportunities for friendships to take shape. In hindsight it is always easy to see what we could have done better but Ashley really wants to encourage anyone that is feeling intimidated or scared of meeting people to just lift your eyes up and look people in the eyes when you meet them. You will notice a would of difference in how they end up treating you and you are creating possibilities of connecting with people. Human connections are vital to our lives so Ashley’s advice to anyone who is having a difficult time in this situation is worth thinking about and challenging yourself to try. What’s Your Exit Strategy? – Ashley Micciche

The Retirement Wisdom Podcast

What's a business owner's retirement plan? It's often based on the business itself. And to retire smarter, that means you need a sound exit strategy. Don't Put Off Your Exit Strategy An exit strategy is easy to put off. But it's a crucial component of retirement planning for small business owners and entrepreneurs. Putting it off can create unnecessary risk and uncertainty. In fact, a surprisingly high percentage of business owners do not know the valuation of their business. And that leads to the possibility that you won't be able to retire on your own terms when you're ready. Our guest today is Ashley Micciche, QPFC®, CRPC®, who specializes in qualified retirement plans like 401(k)s, Profit Sharing Plans, and Cash Balance Plans. Ashley shares her wisdom on developing an exit strategy and what she sees with business owners planning for retirement. We discuss with Ashley: How she became involved with exit planning What she thinks are the essential components of a good exit strategy What gets in the way of having a sound exit strategy in place How far in advance of retirement should business owners develop an exit strategy The unique things business owners need to think about with retirement planning What she hears from business owners these days on planning for retirement Ashley joins us today from Portland, Oregon. _________________________ Wise Quotes "What I found was a lot of these business owners I have been working with and was working with at the time; a lot of them were close to retirement. A lot of them had pretty much everything tied up in their business. And when you're a business owner, the decision to retire is much more complicated because not only do you have to figure out what you're going to do about when you retire. [There's ]Social Security and do I have enough to retire? All those things. But then you have this big elephant in the room, which is the business." "And so that led me down this path to focusing more on, 'Okay, how is your business a component of your retirement?' It's usually a pretty big component. And so I started talking with my business owner clients more and more about that. And then about eight years ago, one of my business owner clients died very suddenly of a heart attack. And he had done no planning or anything. And I watched from the sidelines as his business crumbled, his long-term employees were very quickly let go and laid off. The company was sold for pennies on the dollar to an East Coast competitor. We're on the West Coast here. And just everything that could have gone wrong after he died did go wrong. And it was very hard to watch. And I thought, I need to go deeper into this with clients; talking to them and helping them and carving out a plan for exit. And along with that, what happens to your business? How can we protect your business and protect your family, if things don't go as planned." _________________________ Bio Ashley Micciche specializes in qualified retirement plans like 401(k)s, Profit Sharing Plans, and Cash Balance Plans, and has earned both the Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor® and the Qualified Plan Financial Consultant® designations. Ashley works with her business owner clients to help build and maintain successful retirement plans that recruit, reward, and retain good employees while controlling costs. Most importantly, her goal is to help maximize the number of employees who retire with adequate savings. Ashley started her career as a financial advisor in 2007 after graduating magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Finance from Portland State University. When Ashley joined David as a financial advisor in 2007, she jumped in with both feet. “My dad threw me to the wolves,” she laughs, explaining that she took on some complex clients right from the start. She noticed that the vast majority of financial planners offered a “something for everyone” service model,

Ashley continues to pour out her heart and shares her story....As she realized that she was feeling obligated to heal people Ashley decided that she would only talk to people about their problems if they are already seeking help themselves. Brad Pitt: The more love you have, the more love lost  you will have. This brings back a saying that I heard many years ago: It is better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all.Ashley explains how she learned that she needed to love herself more. She also realized that she was never able to speak to her parents about the emotions she was feeling and this is something that eventually she would need to do in order to grow herself and help her parents. When she did bring this to her Dad he didn't speak to her for 8 months afterwards. While this wasn't good, it was out in the open at last. Since that time they have had swings between talking and not talking and Ashley says that she is more like her Dad and her emotions had been harbored to a point where she was a ticking time bomb. Other people's opinions upset her so much that it would control her life for days. Her therapy sessions helped Ashley come to terms with this fact and now she has a great relationship with her Father.Question: How do your decisions affect other people?Last Summer was the last blow up that Ashley and her Father had as he was still being abusive to her Mother. This came to a head with Ashley letting her Father know that unless he changed she was not going to let her kids be around him when she has them. In addition she said he couldn't walk her down the aisle whenever she gets married. Yes, this is harsh but it had to hit home so that he understood the seriousness of the situation and his actions.Ashley's words are getting through to her Father as her Mother says he is now helping around the house and being more attentive. She wants the best for Family and will always love him, even if this is from afar. A few months after this conversation Ashley's Grand Father passed away and death brings reflection to family. When Ashley went home she saw her Father for the first time in months and he did apologize for the things he had said and how he had acted, which is progress. The lesson here is to share your emotions and face what is happening so that you can clear away the clutter and learn to love yourself. Being confident in who you are and being able to try something new without fear of what other people will say will help you to achieve your dreams. You own your decisions and they should be based on what you want, not what other people want for you. Yes, you will fail as you grow but when you learn from these temporary setbacks it is a good lesson. After a relationship break up Ashley went into a depression and it took a lot to get out of that. She leaned on her friends a lot, which shows the value of having to tight inner circle. The was about 4 years ago and looking back now Ashley cringes as she realizes her self worth was so low. She now understands that the only limitations we have exist in our own minds. Therapy helps you find the real you and identify your inner challenges so that you can overcome them and move forward.Summary:Understanding your self worthDeveloping confidence in yourselfGet rid of internal baggageLearn to love yourselfGet a support groupTherapy is goo d to help you understand why you are who you areFailure is good - fail early and fail often! As parents you influence your kids future - be happy so that they can be happyYou can connect with Ashley on Instagram. You can connect with me at:Website: www.Chris-J-Baker.comEmail: Chris@Chris-J-Baker.comFacebook: Release Your Unconscious PageFacebook: Leadership Excellence with Chris BakerLinkedIn: Chris BakerInstagram: chris _j_baker_ryuTo purchase my book 10 Steps 2 Freedom from Amazon click here.To purchase my book Organizational Culture and Leadership click here

When Ashley was just a young girl she discovered the idea of death and the thought of losing her father made her write up a contract for him to sign that he would not die. I can only imagine how a pure and innocent gesture like this from ones child would rock any parents soul to the core. But since this early day of childhood, Ashley has had to go though the heartbreaking experience of losing her father and she has come out the other side as a grown woman with a new understanding on life’s contracts and how there are honored… through the beauty and mysteries of life… for her father is still with her in spirit and soul. So they raised capital from investors (family and friends) and also secured an SBA loan. In this episode, Ashley will answer: Should I self-fund or raise funding? How much money should I raise? What are different options for raising funding? What does the funding process actually look like (investors vs bank financing)? What’s an important next step after raising funding? Ashley’s so glad that not having her own money saved up didn’t stop her from starting. The countless impact and life change through her gym business made it all worth it! Ashley explains her thinking around rest days, and changing our mentality from just resting our physical bodies, to resting our mental and emotional selves as well. Even when we skip the gym, we are often still turned-on and mentally stimulated — we can take these days to break our patterns and to put away our phones and computer. “You create your own reality in terms of what you choose to digest in the way of content”. When Ashley moved from Vancouver to Toronto last year, she found freedom in the reality that feelosophy will continue to thrive in Vancouver while she builds it up in Toronto. “I never wanted feelosophy to be about Ashley Brodeur, I wanted it to be about rest, and connection, and slowing down, and touch. And because of that other people can teach it, it doesn’t just have to be me”. Being in the yoga and wellness space, Ash talks about avoiding the comparison trap by using her 5 year vision to re-focus on herself and what she is working towards. Ashley from Bothell is a nurse who says dating apps have taken all the mystery out of the process and she wants to try something more spontaneous. We offer her a choice between Country Boy Charles, who is from Kent, and City Boy Nick, who is also from Kent. Charles suggests tubing on down the river and then some BBQ. When Ashley says she can’t swim, Charles doesn’t seem too concerned about that and doesn’t suggest much in the way of a plan B although he says they can do something else “outdoorsy”. City Boy Nick wants to get out of Kent, hop the Sounder to Seattle and go bar hopping. The guys are not terribly detail-oriented and Ashley seems a little lukewarm on both of them, as are the P1s, several of whom offer themselves as alternatives! She does pick one, reluctantly, and they went out. We did not have high hopes to be honest but when we revisited Monday morning, Ashely says the guy she chose ended up being much more interesting in person than he was on the phone. We, however are not super convinced...

Last, but not least, as a wine lover, Ashley is also WSET Level 3 Certified Sommelier and shares her love of wine through wine education and wine consulting. Fitness, Business & Wine are her passions along with helping others create an Authentic Life! Once you tell others about your idea, they’re going to have opinions: and it’s not always fun to hear them. When I started my podcast, Success Unfiltered, people thought it wasn’t a good idea. They said that I didn’t know what I was doing. So many people said it would be a waste of time! I had been interviewed on so many sales podcasts before, though, and knew all the questions and what people wanted to know and hear. But I also knew what people weren’t talking about: the raw, real, nitty-gritty stories. Those stories that are only shared one on one. When I sat down and thought about how I could be different… I decided I wanted Success Unfiltered to be about: those real, raw stories that maybe you might be a little embarrassed about. Sometimes we rely on that validation from others, but what happens when we listen to that gut intuition? When we choose to listen to our gut, we often find our greatest success! This week’s guest on Success Unfiltered, Ashley Drummonds, created protein pancakes that she could eat while training without sacrificing good food. She invested in a business coach, paying 5 figures for him to help train her. Then, when she brought her idea to him, he laughed it off and called it “cute”! Ashley followed her intuition, and made ABS Protein Pancakes a reality, and also earned an appearance on Shark Tank! Are you tired of others thinking your idea is a waste of time, or laughable? Here are a few key secrets we talked about in this episode: Michelle introduces Ashley Drummond. Ashley shares how she was inspired to start ABS protein pancakes. By meeting her own personal needs, Ashley was inspired to start a business, meeting that same need for others. Ashley invested five figures into a business coach, trying to learn everything that she could to run her business. When Ashley had the idea for ABS protein pancakes, she went to him for connections and advice, and he told her that she would fail. This person was someone that Ashley was relying on and looking up to and was supposed to believe in her and he basically temporarily convinced her to not run with her pancake business idea. Devastated, Ashley turned to friends and family for validation. “When we're faced with decisions in life we tend to seek outside opinions because we were fearful. We're scared because if we solely go with our own gut intuition and if it fails then we feel like somehow we have failed.” ~ Ashley Drummond Nobody can tell you what to do because they haven't been in your shoes. They don't know what ideas are coming up for you. They don't know the path or the process. All they can do is provide you with information that they've done in their own lives. “People think that you go on Shark Tank, your episode airs, they see you get a deal or you don't get a deal on there. People think it's all rainbows and sprinkles and that your business is just set, that you never have to work again in your life. The reality is that it is vastly different than that.” ~ Ashley Drummond After her Shark Tank episode aired, Ashley found herself looking for partners. She initiated a conversation with Weight Watchers because they aligned with her values, and they asked her to put together a custom product for them with specific macronutrients. “It was more nerve-wracking for me to sit in front of the board of Weight Watchers Executives than it was for me to go on Shark Tank.” ~ Ashley Drummond After Ashley put together a custom Weight Watchers product, she didn’t hear back from them right away, until 7 months later, she got a message saying that they had “decided to go another direction.” Ashley set aside her business for some time, to refocus and go on her own “Eat, Pray, Love” journey. As she did, she found herself going back to her core desires of helping people; stopping chasing illusions of what would make her business a success and going back to the heart of what she wanted to do with her product. Ashley shares one thing that she would share with her younger self. Connect with Ashley Drummond: ABS Protein Pancakes Website Facebook YouTube Instagram Pinterest Everyone Gets Rejected In Sales. Ordinary People. Ordinary Things. with Melissa Radke

I love today’s guest. My friend Ashley Berry is a life coach, entrepreneur, cancer survivor, mom, foster mom, and woman of strength and wisdom. She loves and touches everyone she comes into contact with. Ashley is passionate about coaching and seeing lives changed for the better. She has overcome breast cancer and many other obstacles in life and is a pure inspiration. She also proves God's love even in times of uncertainty. In this episode, we have a no holds barred conversation about life, love, and parenting. Ashley shares her perspective on today’s society and culture and gives some wonderful ways that we can all make our world better. She lives by example and cares for everyone she meets. We talk about men, raising children, respecting each other, and how Ashley turned her breast cancer journey into the inspiration to start a nonprofit to help others in need. You can find Ashley here: Living ZoeInstagram:  @ zoecoachingFacebook:  @livingzoecoachingashley@livingzoe.net Show Notes [07:20] Ashley was dating her son's father in college. It didn't work out for them, but Ashley has a son named Cayden and now has a good relationship with his father. [09:32] As a result, Ashley is teaching her son to take care of his responsibilities. [10:15] Ashley met her dad when she was 12, and it was a series of let downs after that. [11:26] Ashley is ready to get married. The type of guy who is going to be in her life has to love God first. [13:59] About six years ago, Ashley was praying and she visualized herself sitting with Jesus. That moment changed her relationship with Christ and has helped her to love people differently. [17:02] Ashley grew up with her grandparents until she was seven, and her grandfather was an alcoholic. [19:41] Ashley worries about whether Cayden will be seen differently, because he is black. [22:32] She wants to protect him, so she sets an example of how to be respectful. [25:50] All people deserve the same mutual respect. [27:08] Saying negative things in front of our children leaves a much stronger impact then we realize. [28:13] When we all decide that we are all valuable and worth so much more, and we start truly caring about each other we will stop being mean and start caring about people. [31:07] Melissa shares an example that Oprah told about how pit bulls are loving, but they are feared because of all the bad things people hear. Oprah made the same analogy about black men. [32:12] There are so many good strong intelligent black men who are leaders in this country. These men are setting the pathway for younger black men behind them. [33:17] We can teach children to respond in such a way that doesn't continue the vicious cycle. [33:58] Ashley is also a foster care parent. She has been fostering since August. She now has a 14 month old little boy. [34:57] He is a joy. He sleeps all night long and eats really well. [35:42] People need to show these children what family looks like and break the cycle of dysfunctional families. [37:21] Ashley refuses to allow circumstances to define her. Breast cancer was one of those situations. [38:49] There's no point in just existing. We need to dig deep and get it done. [39:45] Ashley is a life coach and the owner of 3 event venues. [40:27] She also helped her best friend with catering. [40:43] She is also starting a nonprofit called East Texas Cancer Alliance of Hope. [40:58] There is a significant need for tangible hope for people with cancer. [41:56] They will provide tangible hope in the form of gas vouchers, food vouchers, hotel bills, co-pays, and things that will make it easier for people not to have to choose between treatment and paying the bills. [42:30] When Ashley sees a need for something, she goes ahead and does it. [43:57] Do what you can with what you have. Nothing should hold you back. Someone is waiting for you to tell your story. Be authentic and inspire and help someone. [45:20] Ashley loves people, and where she is today is where God has taken her. [47:45] Ashley answers the rapid fire questions. [51:47] Live in such a way that if someone spoke badly about you, no one would believe it. That is how Melissa feels about Ashley. Thanks for joining us on Ordinary People Ordinary Things. We talk through a few characteristics typical of a Type 8 (The Challenger) & Type 2 (The Helper), how they relate to each of us, and how we work around these traits and embrace them to be a powerhouse team of two. Music “Sunny” by Bensound.com. What We Talked About in this Episode: A recap on our enneagram types Billy is a Type 8: The Challenger Ashley is a Type 2: The Helper These types are more similar than they seem both desire impact & influence but have different ways about achieving it Type 8 is direct and results oriented Type 2 is people-oriented and altruistic Type 2 is nicknamed The Helper and it couldn’t describe Ashley more perfectly. She has built her career on helping others and takes this on in her personal life too. Type 8 loves to challenges but loves to give other the opportunity to be challenged and convinces others to take on challenges Ashley often tells Billy when she convincible When we started this podcast, Billy always asked “What’s the end result?” to which Ashley responded “Just to have fun.” Later, he convinced her to start business which they officially started in February 2019. Type 2 can be seen as a fairy-godmother Unknowingly, Ashley often jokes about being a fairy godmother to the many scholarship recipients of the non-profit she runs How Ashley needs a wand Type 8s love control and hate being controlled, which completely describes Billy Even physically, Billy hates certain positions when cuddling because he doesn’t have control of his body Ashley had difficulty working with this when before she was always the one who was forced to make plans She doesn’t desire control, but likes to fill needs and help others Type 2s are empathetic and are in tune to others, Type 8s like results and often loses emotional contact Billy doesn’t walk into situations wanting to make friends, but recognizes that others might & that’s where Ashley’s skillset shines Ashley often serves as a consultant for Billy when communicating emotions with others Type 2s help others so much, it often is to the detriment of their own health When Ashley gets tired or stressed, her emotions come out. Billy then asks himself, “What can I do for Ashley to help her, so she’s not always being the helper?”

EP.14: ON FAILURE PART 2, FAILING WELL: ASHLEY GOOD

Bounce! Conversations with Larry Weeks

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 7, 2017 69:05

NOTE: This is part two of a series on the subject of failure. On this episode, we talk with Ashley Good on how companies can fail intelligently. Part one is with Ryan Babineaux. How does a company deal with failure?   Can companies “fail well” and use failure as a catalyst for innovation? Ashley Good is the CEO and Founder of Fail Forward – the world’s first failure consultancy – that supports people and organizations to acknowledge and adapt to failure in pursuit of innovation.  They do this by offering clients a set of tools and best practices to deal with failure intelligently. Ashley offers a way to build the skills necessary to fail well. She says it's a skill that we can practice but it's one we're often not taught. We're just taught to avoid failure at all costs. We want to create space to take risks and mess up and help our organizations make their way into the future and adapt as they go... when the inevitable failures happen along the way we're able to maximize what we can learn from those experiences to go forward more wisely - Ashley Good This was a very fun interview because there was no pressure. We took failure off the table as any kind of “issue” as we were going to use any mistake we made as part of the show. There is lesson #1, reframe your failures as case studies and experiments. I still I still fail all the time but I have the luxury of being able to use myself as a case study as opposed to as opposed to I think what other people suffer through their failures - Ashley Good And we made no mistakes, the conversation flowed. Funny how that works. Perfection pressure is not conducive to good work or clear thinking. Seems obvious on a personal level but not so corporately.  Ashley says IF you as a manager can bypass shame and defensiveness teams are more productive and if someone does fail, you can find a productive way of working amid failure. A lot of people write and talk about productivity in the workplace. Never heard how defensiveness or shame may impact productivity. Maybe we should address that.   It’s part of our conversation for this podcast: We do talk about failure on a personal level but focus on companies. How would a large business allow for failure while trying to mitigate it? Intelligent or incompetent failure Again, want to be clear here, we are not glorifying failure. Especially within a company. There are things that can sink a company, like losing a big client, a lawsuit, etc. Lesson #3, not all failures are created equally. Ashley says intelligent failures is what want to create room for because we know we need to try new things, experiment and adapt. But we need to acknowledge that there are high consequence failures that we should be avoiding at all costs. There are failures that are blameworthy, where we intentionally deviate from a linear process. "Failure isn't fatal, but failure to change might be" - John Wooden F**ck-up nights, better days Here is something fun I learned talking with Ashley that I wasn't aware of. There are networking events called F**ck-up Nights that have entrepreneurs coming together talking about their start-up mistakes and failures.  It's all about changing the conversation about failure and making it ok to share. People get up and talk about their screw ups that may have unwittingly resulted in eventual success. Something that we could all learn from and emulate. We expend too much energy in success proving and importance posturing. Opening up about your failure not only helps you get over it, but also helps others (and you) learn from it.  Failure, rebirth / reinvention When Ashley tells her personal story about how she started her company, I couldn't help but think of the many people I've talked to who found their calling or passion through some form of failure or pain.  Sometimes the phoenix must burn. Ashley was at one of the lowest points of her life, everything was hard and nothing made sense and all of a sudden a light went on. “This intolerance that we have for those dark moments our inability to deal with them really spoke to me in my moment of darkness." And she was grateful for the experience because she says, up until that moment she hadn't I hadn't really failed at anything.  We don't really practice failing in ways that really matter to us to get good at it, to recognize that we can come through it. Consider this podcast a form of vicarious practice. Give it a listen and learn from Ashley.

And I've got good news –  As a rule, adversity reveals genius and prosperity hides it.”  —  Horace  Tweet This Cliff Feightner‘s Poem This Week You need to be having a dreamTo outline your life's schemeIt's your decisionIn having a visionThat helps you rise to the top like the cream Episode – 07-14-17 Title: N/A Subtitle: N/A Summary: What happens when you've made enough? A provocative, ambitious, and engaging producer, Adryenn Ashley has taken the independent film community by storm with groundbreaking documentary and feature projects. She has never been shy about tackling a hard subject or a controversial fire storm. When Ashley's early acting career was cut short by an injury, the tenacious Northern Californian stayed in the game seeking original independent projects to produce. Her first feature, Metal, was shot in just 8 days in the rough neighborhood of Hunter's Point, San Francisco. Ashley's production of this gritty and dramatic portrayal of a poor black family in turmoil went on to receive stellar reviews and awards at festivals worldwide. It premiered, and was a critical favorite, at the Mill Valley Film Festival, won the Jury Prize at the Pan African Film Festival, and Best Picture at the Seattle Underground Film Festival and continued to win prizes around the globe for 2 years. Her IMDB is stacked with other juicy projects and at present, Ashley has four television shows in pre-production with her company, 21st Century Pictures Group, and is venturing back in front of the camera to host The F Word.  She is also the founder of Crowded Reality, the world's first crowdfunding platform for reality tv and talk shows that gives content creators the ability to not only fan-fund their pilot, but attract sponsors and distribution as well. http://21stcentury.org
