This month, Shirley Robertson's Sailing Podcast hosts one of offshore sailing's most accomplished names, as multiple world record holder Brian Thompson drops in for a two part chat about being one of the fastest offshore sailors on the planet.By his own admission, multihull expert Brian Thompson doesn't even know himself how many offshore World Records he's held, but in his opening chat with Robertson, the modest British sailor does admit to knowing for a fact that no one in sailing has ever held more than he has! From Trans-Atlantics to circumnavigations, the final figure is up in the forties, a fact Brian attributes to a long time spent sailing with American adventurer Steve Fossett...:"Steve was a remarkable guy who was obsessed, and fascinated with breaking world records, and not just in sailing, but in all sorts of sports, so I think it all started with him, and we probably got fifteen world records with Steve, and later on with Lloyd Thornburg on Phaedo, we got another ten. Sometimes I've done the same record multiple times...round Britain three times, round the world twice, so in all I've probably broken near forty world records!"Further into this first Episode, Robertson and Thompson discuss Brian's first circumnavigation record onboard Fossett's PlayStation, called Cheyenne at the time of the record attempt, and his growing ability to safely sail big boats fast in big seas. It's now something that Thompson is well known for, and as his career developed, he was in increasing demand, finding himself on a star studded ABN AMRO I as stand in helm for a southern ocean Volvo Ocean Race leg that would prove pivotal to the team's overall Race win...:"I really concentrate on getting a maximum VMG where there is a sweet spot where if you go half a degree lower you're just going to fall of the cliff and stop. You could be a little bit higher, and you're doing a nice boat speed, and it's all very easy but to be gaining that extra one or two degrees of depth you have to play with fire, and I really enjoy that!"Into Part 2 and the sailing chat continues as Brian reveals the many difficulties experienced throughout much of his solo Vendee Globe campaign of 2008, before moving onto his sensational Jules Verne record onboard Loick Peyron's Banque Populaire V, a forty five day, thirteen hour record that stood for five years. This edition of the podcast is in two parts and is available to listen to via the podcast page of Shirley's own website - www.shirleyrobertson.com/podcast or via most popular podcast outlets, including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcast and aCast. To celebrate Juneteenth, Urbanist Media's Urban Roots podcast has partnered with Cincinnati Public Radio (WVXU) to bring you Juneteenth Cincinnati Shorts: weekly, 90-second tributes to people and places important to Cincinnati's African American history. Today, we're highlighting Sarah Fossett, the hair stylist and Underground Railroad conductor who — with two acts of defiance in 1862 — spurred the integration of Cincinnati's street cars. While we couldn't quite fit it into this short, Sarah would go on to help found the First Baptist Church of Cumminsville. If you want to learn more about Sarah's remarkable life of service, check out our season one episode on South Cumminsville. Find each short on the Urban Roots podcast feed or tune in to 91.7 WVXU on Thursdays at 5:49 and 7:50 a.m. during Morning Edition and again at 4:50 p.m. during All Things Considered. Additionally, episodes will air on sister station 90.9 WGUC each Thursday at 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. And tune in on the Juneteenth Holiday -- Monday, June 19 at noon and 8 p.m. -- when WVXU will present a one-hour special featuring some episodes (including the South Cummunsvill episode where we talk about Sarah) from Season 1 of the Urban Roots podcast! Credits Juneteenth Cincinnati Shorts is brought to you by Vanessa Quirk, Deqah Hussein-Wetzel, and Connor Lynch. Would you like to travel the world in a hot air balloon? You'd need a sound navigation system, a wealthy sponsor, and tireless endurance. Steve Fossett decided to do it in 1997. He managed to take off and cross the Atlantic Ocean on the 3rd attempt, but his plan failed while he was trying to fly over the Southern Hemisphere. In his sixth attempt, Fossett made it around the world in a hot air balloon: his 'Spirit of Freedom' balloon landed in Queensland, Australia, after a two-week flight across the globe. But then, the traveler mysteriously disappeared. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Most of us have heard of the Bermuda Triangle, where planes and ships have mysteriously gone missing in the Atlantic Ocean for decades. Did you know there is a similar place in Nevada? The Nevada Triangle. In a region of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Nevada and California, 2,000 planes have been lost in the last 60 years. In this remotely populated area of more than 25,000 miles of mountain desert, many of the crash sites have never been found. The Nevada Triangle is typically defined as spanning from Las Vegas, Nevada in the southeast to Fresno, California in the west, and to Reno, Nevada at the top. Within this wilderness is the mysterious, top-secret Area 51. Along with the dozens of conspiracy theories which include UFOs and paranormal activity that surrounds the air force base, similar theories have long been considered regarding the Nevada Triangle. One plane to go missing was that of a record-setting aviator, sailor, and adventurer named Steve Fossett on September 3, 2007. Fossett, flying a single-engine plane over Nevada's Great Basin Desert, took off and never returned. After hunting for a month for the plane, the search was called off and on February 15, 2008, Fossett was declared dead. Later that year on September 29th, Fossett's identification cards were discovered in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California by a hiker. Throughout the years, many of the missing planes were flown by experienced pilots and have disappeared under mysterious circumstances: and their wreckage never found. The biggest mystery is: nobody really talks about it. Let's find out why.
In this episode, Dottie Chalmers Cutter interviews Catherine Wygant Fossett, Executive Director of the Institute for Family-Owned Business (IFOB). Melissa Fossett My name is Melissa Fossett and I have loved education from a young age. I was a diligent student and have always had a love for books and stories, adventure, and new ideas and figuring out concepts. I love kids and desire to be a positive influence and make a difference in their lives. My journey to becoming a personal tutor was bred out of years of homeschooling my own 2 children. I have 2 boys with completely opposite personalities. Watching them both learn and succeed with the right tools according to their individual personalities, birthed a passion in me to want to help every child I can succeed in the same way. I also worked for Greenville County Schools for approximately 3 years. When Covid-19 hit and changed the landscape of the public school system, I launched my tutoring business anticipating that there would be a great need for children as they navigated the challenges associated with all of these changes. I have a degree in Elementary Education from North Greenville University. I am qualified to teach children in grades K - 6th. I specialize in creating an individualized and personalized plan for students based primarily on their particular learning style. I would love the opportunity to chat and see if I can be of assistance to your student(s). Unfortunately, Dr. Fossett is in quarantine because he was exposed to someone who tested positive. Because of that, this is a replay of the sermon from September 27th. This was by far the most downloaded sermon of the year and garnered the most feedback. Dr. Fossett should be back for the live stream of the Christmas Eve service.

This episode was originally released in 2015. In Episode 4 of the History of American Slavery, hosts Rebecca Onion and Jamelle Bouie explore the shape of family life on the slave plantations of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. They make a case study of one famous plantation, Monticello, the Virginia estate owned by Thomas Jefferson. Then they take a closer look at how slavery tore families apart, and the emotional history of that trauma. They begin their conversation by remembering the life of Joseph Fossett (1780–1858), a Monticello blacksmith. Upon Jefferson’s death, his last will and testament granted freedom to Fossett, but not to Fossett’s family. It would be 10 years before Joseph could reunite with his wife and 10 children. This is the first in an occasional series of podcasts I want to do on one of my favorite topics ‘teacher entrepreneurs'. Many teachers are looking to start an entrepreneurial endeavor as a ‘side hustle' and some to do it full time. We hear the stories of teachers who are doing just that! Andy Fossett has had an interesting entrepreneurial journey. He moved to Japan to teach in a rural school where he was the only foreigner. He transitioned to founding GMB - a company providing online fitness training. They also run in-person workshops around the world. Listen on: iTunes / Podbean / Stitcher / Spotify / YouTube This podcast is sponsored by ‘AppsEvents'. We're a Google Education Partner and active since the launch of ‘Google Apps for Education' in 2006. We're a team of former educators, and experts in helping schools integrate Google into their schools and classrooms. We customize all our training for each school to make sure we have a lasting impact. Thousands of educators worldwide have earned their Google Educator Certification with our Certification Boot Camps, which take place worldwide and get you and your staff certified quickly. We also host ‘Google Summits' which are fun 2-day conference-style events with concurrent sessions & keynotes delivered by experienced Google Trainers, delivering training on a broad range of topics using G Suite in the classroom and school setting. Check it out over at appsevents.com and we can also host one at your school which is a great way to build a Google community amongst your staff to support each other, plus increase the profile of your school. It doesn't need to be a big commitment from the school and we can start with a small ‘bootcamp'. This podcast is also brought to you by Acer for Education. People ask us what Chromebooks we recommend for schools and after trying them all we always recommend Acer. We've been to Acer HQ in Taiwan to be part of product discussions and they are genuinely the best thought out, and most importantly durable devices out there. They are always innovating, including the first tablet running Chrome and the first convertible touch screen Chromebook. The latest version is the Spin 11 with Stylus and 2 cameras and we highly recommend it! The Gist of Freedom Preserving American History through Black Literature . . .
Join Historian and African American Artifacts Collector, Philip Merrill on The Gist of Freedom as he lectures on Rev. Peter Fossett and other historical related topics. Entrepreneur and Underground Railroad Conductor ~Rev. Peter Fossett (1815 -1901) At the age of 11, Fossett's life took a turn for the worst in 1826. On July 4, 1826, Jefferson died. While Jefferson freed Fossett's father in his will, the remainder of the Fossett family still remained in bondage, being sold at auction in January 1827. Peter Fossett was enslaved by John R. Jones. Fossett's father attempted to purchase Peter's freedom, but Jones refused to sell his son Peter so him. In 1843, after purchasing several family members' freedom, Joseph Fossett moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, leaving Peter behind in Virginia still in bondage. Joseph Fossett made several trips back to Virginia to see his enslaved family members. Twice, Peter Fossett tried to run away to join his family in Ohio. Both times his owner recaptured him. ------ In 1994, Philip Merrill founded the organization Nanny Jack & Company, an archives and consulting agency specializing in creating projects that illuminate the African American experience through memorabilia, oral history and research. The company would eventually house over 30,000 artifacts, including photographs, rare books, folk art, documents, music, dolls, furniture, and quilts. Nanny Jack & Company would go on to collaborate with various educational organizations and television channels, including The Smithsonian Institution's Anacostia Museum and Center for African American History and Culture, the Discovery Channel, the Maryland Historical Society, Maryland Public Television, and the History Channel. In 1996, Merrill became an appraiser with the Public Broadcasting Service's (PBS) television show Antiques Roadshow.
This is Episode 3! Today we'll be talking with Chef Craig Hartman, pit master and cook extraordinaire of The Barbecue Exchange located in Gordonsville, Virginia. Even though he started years ago in fine dining, including establishing the kitchen at The Clifton Inn, and bringing accolades to Fossett's at Keswick Hall, he's landed at the smoker and we're so glad he did. Chef Hartman brings artisanal technique to simple food and explains in the long run, it's anything but simple. In this episode we talk pig, Puerto Rico, ketchup, bologna, and why there are so many restaurants in Charlottesville. What's the secret to running a successful restaurant anyway? And is Charlottesville magic? Listen to find out! This episode is sponsored by In A Flash Laser.

Astonished, Omidyar contacted the winning bidder to ask if he understood that the laser pointer was broken. In his responding email, the buyer explained: "I'm a collector of broken laser pointers."[8] The frequently repeated story that eBay was founded to help Omidyar's fiancée trade Pez candy dispensers was fabricated by a public relations manager in 1997 to interest the media, which were not interested in the company's previous explanation about wanting to create a "perfect market".[9] This was revealed in Adam Cohen's 2002 book, The Perfect Store,[7] and confirmed by eBay.[9] Reportedly, eBay was simply a side hobby for Omidyar until his internet service provider informed him he would need to upgrade to a business account due to the high volume of traffic to his website. The resulting price increase (from $30/month to $250) forced him to start charging those who used eBay, and was not met with any animosity. In fact it resulted in the hiring of Chris Agarpao as eBay's first employee to handle the number of cheques coming in for fees. FLASH The Shockwave player was originally developed for the Netscape browser by Macromedia Director team members Harry Chesley, John Newlin,Sarah Allen, and Ken Day, influenced by a previous plug-in that Macromedia had created for Microsoft's Blackbird. Version 1.0 of Shockwave was released independent of Director 4 and its development schedule has since coincided with the release of Director since version 5[citation needed]. Its versioning also has since been tied to Director's and thus there were no Shockwave 2-4 releases. Shockwave 1The Shockwave plug-in for Netscape Navigator 2.0 was released in 1995, along with the standalone Afterburner utility to compress Director files for Shockwave playback. The first large-scale multimedia site to use Shockwave was Intel's 25th Anniversary of the Microprocessor. The event is yearly commemorated by the Phoenix festival which celebrates Tullamore's resurrection from the ashes following the accident.

On September 3rd, 2007, adventurer Steve Fossett took off from Yerington, Nevada on a short flight in a Bellanca Super Decathlon, and went missing. After more than a year, a hiker found some of his personal effects high in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California on September 29, 2008. Two days later, authorities spotted wreckage from his aircraft. Possible human remains were also found at the site. The aircraft crashed into a steep granite slope at an elevation of about 10,000 feet, seven miles west of the town of Mammoth Lakes, California. The crash site is about 93 miles or 150 kilometers south of Yerington, Nevada. Pieces of the plane were scattered over a steeply sloped area, with the engine about 300 feet from the fuselage wreckage. There was also evidence of a post crash fire. Fossett was the only occupant.
