Jack is holding this as his ascension to being a horse ancestor, as if he is being crowned.  This is his journey of sharing his wisdom and also our process with him. Our hope in sharing is that it continues to support when we ourselves are faced with this journey with our beloved companions and to honor the wisdom our horses have to share when they are walking this path with us.

In this episode we meet up with her at the Red Bluff Bull & Gelding sale where she's selling 4 of her Angus Bulls. A bull sale isn't much unlike a dog show... at least to these eyes. The animals are just a lot bigger. An important part of a bull's genetic makeup is that he is docile. Walking down the row of stalls where the bulls are being prepped to be auctioned is more akin to a beauty salon than a barnyard. This is where I first discovered that they have blow dryers and hairspray for cows.

We initially decided to visit Oak Ridge Angus to pursue an angle in regard to Bull Sales... it's a fascinating process and not something we'd covered before on this podcast. After some research and my interview with 3rd generation rancher Cheryl LaFranchi, there was a whole lot more to unpack. This episode will be split in two. We visited the Red Bluff Bull and Gelding sale at the Tehama County Fairgrounds to learnabout the stock dog trials and auction. In this auction 17 dogs, all border collies, exhibited their cattle herding abilities and went on to auction... with one of the dogs fetching 45 thousand dollars.

Episode 27 is an On the Fence segment. That’s where Jec and I meet on the virtual fence to talk about an issue or topic. Maybe it’s been bugging us or exciting us or simply asking us to give it a good run around the airwaves. “On the fence” is sometimes used as a phrase to indicate undecided, which is funny because us two gals are pretty decided when we meet On the Fence. In this segment, we kind of continue - tangentially anyway - with our Gender Gyrations project to talk about mare/gelding bias in the horse world. Yep. Mares are mare-ish and geldings are not. Or geldings have studdy behavior. Or whatever. And, yes, I’m using the word ‘whatever’ to draw attention to and maybe poke fun at the myriad ways in which we can discriminate against or judge horses by their gender. I think a lot of times it is fun. But it’s fun in the way making fun of someone from Texas is fun. It’s fun in the way making fun of someone who rides English is fun. Which is to say, it really just shows off how uninformed and maybe how ignorant we can be. Blaming a behavior on gender is a good way to let ourselves NOT be accountable for learning the facts and appreciating the larger picture of who this horse is and what its needs are. My guest on the ResourcefulHDR podcast his month is Dr. Rebecca Gelding. Rebecca recently started a new job as Project Officer (ARC Centre of Excellence for Children and Familes over the Life Course) Rebecca speaks about her research, her career choices and how important it is to stay true to herself. Rebecca’s award-winning PhD thesis investigated what is going on in the brain as people imagine musical pitch and rhythm. Her research has featured on ABC's All in the Mind Podcast, ABC Classic and ABC Science, and in 2019 she presented at the sold-out TEDx Macquarie University, and had the audience on their feet singing. Earlier this year she even played Chopsticks on the Steinway & Sons piano in City Recital Hall in front of a live lunchtime audience all in the name of science communication. I began following Rebecca when she was still doing her PhD and as a result saw that she was going to be ia guest on the ABC Radio Sydney and so I tuned in to hear about her fascinating research. I was then lucky enough to be in the audience for her talk at TEDx Macquarie University in September last year. Rebecca’s TEDx talk has now had over 540000 views! A 23 year-old Washington D.C male named Trent Gates claims to have pioneered a new innovation in the world of body modification. Gates, who identifies as non-binary, claims to have personally removed his own testicles and penis, desiring to render himself what he refers to as a genitalia-free ‘nullo.’ Apparently Gates isn’t the first to undergo the procedure in its own right- the phrase is used in extreme subcultures to describe biological males who have chosen to remove their sex organs and nipples. Gates claims to have received inspiration from a California nullo known as ‘Gelding.’

When I first started a racehorse adoption charity (LOPE), I was a complete novice at running a farm or training green horses. Did this stop me? No, that would have been too easy. Instead I cheerfully plunged ahead, oblivious to potential downsides of my inexperience. While my open-mindedness and optimism were terrific traits, I did end up learning many things the hard way. Like the importance of awareness when working with horses. Or of verifying information provided by other horse people (who may have issues with awareness themselves). In this episode, I share two entertaining stories of calm horses and savvy owners who weren’t quite what they seemed. They taught me valuable lessons about safety and observation skills that I never forgot.
