We believe all neighborhoods deserve to be covered in a meaningful way.We amplify positive stories, cover development and local school council meetings and serve as watchdogs in neighborhoods often ostracized by traditional news media.Ground-level coverageOur neighborhood-based reporters don't parachute in once to cover a story. They are in the neighborhoods they cover every day building relationships over time with neighbors. We believe this ground-level approach not only builds community but leads to a more accurate portrayal of a neighborhood.Stories that matter to you — every daySince our launch five years ago, we've published more than 25,000 stories from the neighborhoods, covered hundreds of community meetings and send daily and neighborhood newsletters to more than 130,000 Chicagoans. We've built this loyalty by proving to folks we are not only covering their neighborhoods, we are a part of them. Some of us have internalized the national media's narrative of a broken Chicago. We aim to change that by celebrating our neighborhoods and chronicling the resilience of the people who fight every day to make Chicago a better place for all.

This 1993 classic blends romance and drama, following Justice (Jackson), a grieving poet, and Lucky (Tupac), a mail carrier with dreams beyond the streets, as they embark on a life-changing road trip from Los Angeles to Oakland. Alongside them are the fiery Iesha (Regina King, Watchmen, If Beale Street Could Talk) and her troubled boyfriend Chicago (Joe Torry, Tales from the Hood), whose turbulent relationship adds layers of tension. Directed by John Singleton (Boyz N The Hood, Higher Learning), the film delivers powerful themes of love, loss, and resilience, intertwined with heartfelt poetry from Maya Angelou. We react to the most iconic moments, including Justice & Lucky's First Meeting at the Hair Salon, The Road Trip Begins, The Heated Argument at the Gas Station, The Beach Scene, Chicago & Iesha's Explosive Fight, and The Emotional Finale. The do's and don'ts of hair salon rules are under scrutiny after an MP revealed it's illegal to serve hot drinks in the working part of the salon, but she wants to change that. National's East Coast MP Dana Kirpatrick is pushing a private members bill to lift the ban - that most salons seem to be blissfully unaware of and are breeching on a daily basis. The owner of high end Auckland hairsalon Grant Bettjeman spoke to Lisa Owen.
There's a push to alter New Zealand's laws to allow people to indulge in a tea or coffee while at the hairdressers. It's an offence to serve a drink in a salon's service area – deemed unsafe under health regulations. National MP Dana Kirkpatrick has added a bill to the ballot to remove the law. Rodney Wayne Chief Executive Julie Evans told Mike Hosking the offence is news to them, as their salons have long served tea and coffee to clients. She's unsure why it was never brought to their attention when the council conducted checks of salon dishwashers, to ensure they worked to legal standards. One East Coast MP seeks to overturn the law banning people from indulging in a cuppa at the hair salon. It's currently an offence to serve a drink in a salon's service area as it's been deemed unsafe under health regulations. Dana Kirkpatrick has added a bill to the ballot to remove the law. Kirkpatrick says the same law says it's illegal to bring a dog to the hairdressers. "For some reason, they decided that you couldn't take your dog to the hairdresser - but these days, we take them to the pub, the café, we take them to the office." The relationship between a stylist and their repeat guest is special. But if you build that special relationship with enough people over time, you might feel maxed out because your days are so busy. You have a waiting list. So you raise your prices, but that waiting list doesn't get any shorter. Though you may feel like you can't handle one more thing, this could be the perfect time to bring on an associate - a recent hair school grad to work with you behind the chair. And if you're worried that bringing on an associate might upset that relationship you've built with your guests, Paige Lowe is here to allay your fears. Paige Lowe is a Summit Certified Associate Trainer and a stylist at Glam Street Salon in Grayslake, Illinois, where she currently works with three associates behind the chair! In this episode, Paige and host Blake Reed Evans dispel some misconceptions about working with associates and discuss how to develop a partnership where both stylist and associate can grow. Episode 028: Parents Crying in the Hair Salon – Wait... What?! The Influence Every Day Show with Dr. Ed Tori In this compelling episode, Dr. Tori dives deep into an unexpected revelation shared by a hairdresser: parents are increasingly shedding tears while watching their children in the hairdresser's chair. What's causing these tears? The answer may surprise you: it's not the haircut—it's the rare moment of uninterrupted eye contact between parent and child. Dr. Tori explores the profound implications of this moment, especially in a world where digital devices dominate our attention. He shares insights on how technology has shifted not just our work but also our relationships, and how we can combat the disconnection it creates by being deliberate in our interactions. Key Takeaways: Small talk as a powerful tool: How a simple analogy of a hallway full of doors can transform your conversations. Hairdressers and barbers as master conversationalists: Discover how their environment lends itself to deep human connection. The heartbreaking reason parents are crying: A shift in family dynamics caused by the omnipresence of screens and the lost art of eye contact. Technology's impact on relationships: Learn why it's essential to be intentional with our communication in an age of scrolling and distractions. The power of deliberate listening: How to recognize conversation gateways and avoid missing crucial moments with loved ones. Memorable Quote: "In the midst of a sea of rapid change, we should get really good at what doesn't change—how to influence others, how to build rapport, and how to cultivate deep relationships with those who matter most." Action Step: Take a moment today to put down your device and make meaningful eye contact with someone you care about. Be deliberate in your conversations and listen with intention. --- Support the Show: If you found this episode impactful, share it with someone who needs to hear it.
