How can a vineyard disaster become an unexpected opportunity to innovate? How does storytelling transform wine marketing? What innovative pairings go beyond red wine and red meat? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with Sally Evans, author of the new memoir, Make The Midlife Move: A Practical Guide to Flourish after Fifty. You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks Giveaway Three of you are going to win a copy of her terrific new memoir, Make The Midlife Move: A Practical Guide to Flourish after Fifty. To qualify, all you have to do is email me at natalie@nataliemaclean.com and let me know that you've posted a review of the podcast. I'll choose three people randomly from those who contact me. Good luck! Highlights Are you ever too old to start over? How do we build resilience as we get older? How did Sally's harsh initiation with the 2017 frost in Bordeaux shape her approach to winemaking? Why did Sally decide not to pursue organic certification? How did it feel to present Sally's first wine in 2018 at Bordeaux's En Primeur? Which aspects of the story does Sally hope critics understand beyond what's in the glass? Beyond scores and medals, what forms of recognition have been most meaningful to Sally as a winemaker? What was it like to be sworn into the Confrérie des Gentilshommes de Fronsac? What was the steepest learning curve in selling a physical product like wine? How has Sally found creative ways to market and sell Château George 7? Why should you incorporate storytelling in marketing wine? How did Sally pivot to minimize the negative impact of COVID on the winery? What are some unusual pairings between vegetarian dishes and red wines? How do you know when it's time to move on from something you've built? What goals would Sally like to accomplish before selling the winery? Key Takeaways As Sally shares, she was still living in the southeast of France when the previous owner of her vineyard rang to tell her that the frost had destroyed everything. While now we have barrel rooms and we have thermoregulation, we made a decent wine and that proved the process. That was a good example of how in midlife we can look at something that looks really bad, something that's happened, and actually turn around and make something good out of it. Sally says that when she hosts wine tastings, she always talks about the occasions when they're going to drink the wine: I think there's one thing in marketing where you profile the customer but I think with wine, often it's around the occasion and what you're eating and who's over and so on. That's how we drink wine. We drink it for occasions. Sally observes that when we look at the back of most red wine bottles, especially from Bordeaux, it says drink with red meat: I thought, well, that's not really helpful. I have a very close friend, Wendy Narby, she and I sat down and said, red wine goes fabulously with veggie dishes and so we've done it as a passion project where we talk about how to pair plant-based food with different Bordeaux wines. About Sally Evans After an international corporate career based in Paris and the South of France, Sally Evans completely changed her life in her fifties. She created an independent winery in Bordeaux, completely on her own with no prior experience or knowledge of wine. She threw herself into wine studies, bought a parcel of mature vines with some dilapidated buildings and created a brand-new wine chateau. She now has a boutique winery, Château George 7, in Fronsac on the right bank of Bordeaux. Her wines win high critical acclaim from leading wine critics and publications and are listed in Michelin-starred restaurants and top venues across Europe and the US. Sally has also created a wine tourism destination for tastings and events, winning accolades for its exceptional wine experience. Alongside wine, her other passion is supporting women to follow their dreams. To learn more, visit https://www.nataliemaclean.com/333.

How are innovators making art and wine more engaging and accessible? What is it about the art and wine worlds that makes business and pleasure often one and the same? Is authenticity in art important? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with author Bianca Bosker. You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks Giveaway Three of you will win a copy of Bianca Bosker's terrific new book Get the Picture: A Mind-Bending Journey among the Inspired Artists and Obsessive Art Fiends Who Taught Me How to See. To qualify, all you have to do is email me at natalie@nataliemaclean.com and let me know that you've posted a review of the podcast. I'll choose one person randomly from those who contact me. Good luck! Highlights Are the art and wine worlds still ruled by gatekeepers? How are innovators bringing in new voices and making art and wine more engaging and accessible? What's the role of the social grapevine in the art and wine industries? Why is mentorship a critical aspect of moving up the ladder in these industries? What is it about the art and wine worlds that makes business and pleasure often one and the same? What are some creative ways to develop your taste and understanding of art and wine? Is authenticity in art important? How do forgeries and fakes impact the art world? What can the art and wine worlds learn from each other? Why was it important to Bianca to be in the action in the art world when writing Get in the Picture? Which wines would Bianca pair with iconic artists and artwork? Why would Joan Didion be Bianca's ideal companion for sharing a bottle of wine? Key Takeaways Bianca says, “With art and wine, some people say there are no rules, you can engage with it any way you want." She found that advice really frustrating. She thinks that it is important to give people the tools to think for themselves to engage with art or with wine on their own terms. Bianca observes that mixing business and pleasure is part of getting ahead in these different worlds, but it can be unfair for up-and-coming artists. It's hard to spend all of your time bopping around openings and networking. With art, the idea of a forgery is actually a relatively recent invention, Bianca notes. We haven't always cared what was original and what was a forgery or what was a fake. About Bianca Bosker Bianca Bosker is the author of the New York Times bestselling books Get the Picture: A Mind-Bending Journey among the Inspired Artists and Obsessive Art Fiends Who Taught Me How to See and Cork Dork. A contributing writer at The Atlantic, she has also written for publications such as The New Yorker, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal. Sabrina didn't realize how sensitive she was to the weather. Right now, the weather is lovely in London and her mood has soared. She just feels great being able to be out in the sun and soaking up the heat like a lizard! Sonia C. is in New Orleans with Sonia T. and she is also overwhelmed with how warm and humid it feels right now. This week's theme is: Cleaning out bad friend vibes. Highlights: Are your friends just a Dorito chip? [3:00] Good friends will make you feel light and sweet. Like a soufflé! [6:15] Sonia C. noticed she had some friends who only wanted to ruminate on the dark times that she was going through. She's already moved on, why haven't you? [8:15] Let's talk about friendenemies. [11:45] It's time to be gator-friend aware. [18:45] What does a soufflé friend look like? [21:45] Are you guys best friends or are you guys just trauma bonding? [27:45] Tool of the week. [33:35] Question of the week. [37:35] Sonia C. has had a lot of conversations this week from clients who are really affected by the company they are keeping. It's so important for us to have enough self-awareness (and self-love!) to seek out kind energy and energy that lifts up our spirit. Sometimes that means we have to make some hard decisions in sending away people who might not serve you. Sonia T. calls them Dorito friends. They taste good at the moment but they make your stomach hurt after they've ‘settled'. A big indicator that you're not with good people is when you feel like you're talking too much or trying too hard to be liked. Sonia C. falls into that pattern and it feels icky. Sabrina shares a recent story of how her spirit was calling her to this new potential friend. She personally wanted to be introverted and stay home, but her spirit was drawn to this person. She was so glad she listened because meeting this new person really uplifted her and she was able to connect with someone who was on the same good vibe. It is sometimes worth pushing yourself and putting yourself out there! Tool of the Week: Check your pantry and clean out those doritos. . 321 Your Innate Worth Throughout life we are told from an early age what to do, what jobs would be best for us, and what society expects of us. Quite often this leaves us in a job that doesn't bring us fulfillment, so we end up looking for that fulfillment and sense of worth by exploring other career paths as well as life paths, and exploring what makes us feel our innate worth. In this episode Sarah Elkins and Corree Roofener discuss how labels impact us and our skill sets from an early age, and how through hard work and dedication to one's self you often find yourself in a fulfilling position in life. Highlights Are you labeling someone despite seeing them through only one lens? What labels were you given that you still think about? Do you define yourself or do others? What is your natural skill that you do exceptionally well and what can you do to nurture that skill? Asking for help is one of the first steps in growth. Bringing in others with different skills who can help you, can make you thrive. Build a diverse board of personal directors. Quotes “You learn about people as you are exposed, like you said having connection. Whether that be in a live event or just having a written connection like you said on LinkedIn. Someone responds to something you say and there's this immediate conversation happening, or almost immediate conversation happening, and that feels so different.” “I think, I don't think I actually know, I feel that when we begin to kind of unravel or open up those petals of that flower, we come back to what we innately know about ourselves, and we know it we just put it aside, because it's, One: Not comfortable. Two: Not Successful. Three: Not a career. It can be a hundred different things, but what we do is we walk away from what we innately do so well or we cover it up. When we can start to own that, take value in that, we begin to find that “This is what I'm supposed to be doing.” but in that, what do we have to do? We have to ask for help. Which is so hard.” “And just connecting with that fact that, those side hustles, we're gonna go right back to the beginning, typically are going back to who we are innately. We crave that as humans, we crave what we were created to do innately and we tend to change what that looks like because “Success says you should do X, Y, and Z.” Or, “Mom said I should do this.” Or, “Dad said I was good at this.” and so we stop and we don't go back to that thing. One of the things for me that I had to really own, I've always been good with numbers but keeping synced “Oh I'm living that!” But what I had to realize is that my worth, my value as a mother was the message that had to be shared.” “It's just so scary because again you're speaking this dream out loud to the universe, to your peers, whoever it is, and you have no idea what it's going to look like. And we so adamantly connect the word failure if it looks different than how we originally envisioned.” Dear Listeners it is now your turn, What is that side hustle you've been considering? What could you go back to from your younger days when you had an idea of what you were really good at. That you don't necessarily need to make income at it, but you would like to explore again. Jot it down in the comments, share it with me privately, I am your audience for that. And, as always, thank you for listening. About Sarah "Uncovering the right stories for the right audiences so executives, leaders, public speakers, and job seekers can clearly and actively demonstrate their character, values, and vision." In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I've realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don't realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they're sharing them with. My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home. The audiobook, Your Stories Don't Define You, How You Tell Them Will is now available! Included with your purchase are two bonus tracks, songs recorded by Sarah's band, Spare Change, in her living room in Montana. Is America headed for another civil war? The George Floyd riots that burned cities throughout the nation, along with the rise of patriot militias surging to record numbers has a number of pundits saying just that. But all this of course raises the question: what would, God forbid, such a civil war look like, and even more so, who would win? Highlights: ● “Are we basically two different countries within a single nation? Have we in many respects already separated from one another, and now we just need to close the deal, as it were?" ● "Republicans now dominate 80 percent of the nation's land area, The Democrats have become an almost entirely urban, metropolitan party. Note that this regional disparity completely does away with the notion of red states vs blue states; there's actually no such thing!" ● “In other words, red regions are armed to the teeth, whereas blue regions simply aren't!” Timestamps: [02:53] Red and Blue States: A growing divide? Summary: Are we witnessing the shortest stock market correction in history, or is there more to come? I sit down with Avi Gilburt to discuss the correction as well as inflationary circumstances that have created a lot of economic speculation. We also talk about energy, which has had great returns, but is not necessarily indicative of the economic state. Tune in to hear more valuable insight on the economy and all of its happenings. Highlights: -Are we witnessing the shortest stock market correction in history? Or is there more to come? And what's happening with inflation? -We have hit the minimum target with the correction -If the market doesn't pull back correctively from the next high, this is going to put us back on track to looking at one more test before we try again -A lot of this is speculation, and getting an edge -Energy has had great returns -We're expecting more rally within energy -The big energy issue lately has been natgas -Some people think higher oil is indicative of the economy doing well, and others think the opposite -The economy follows the market -The stock market seems to have always been the leading indicator of the economy -Inflation isn't what everyone is making it out to be -Prices are going up in certain aspects, but the purely economic definition of inflation says that all prices should be going up -We have a large increase in the money supply, but no velocity of money -We still have price displacement -Disappointed with the action of gold -The IWM is setting up to outperform again -The dollar is going to be getting more of a rally Useful Links: Financial Survival Network Elliott Wave Trader
Summary: Are we losing freedom as a product of health issues and government mandates? In today's podcast, George and I tackle freedom, health, and finances to collectively consider the cost-benefit analysis of government involvement: how does this affect our overall well-being and happiness? We get into the financial consequences of some of the current world issues, in which the government's deficit spending may reflect quantitative easing—which could result in continual inflation. Tune in today to get an interesting perspective on some of the most pressing global considerations right now, and to probe into what health and wealth mean in an era of immense change and regulation. Highlights: -Are we losing freedom? Is it the biggest casualty of the health issues we've seen over the years? -We are encouraging people to think about what wealth is -From an economic standpoint, goods and services make money count -When you look at policies, we must ask ourselves if they produce more or fewer goods and services -We make ourselves poorer if policies produce fewer -Even if you have a substantial net worth, limitations on where you can go/what you can do de-value these assets. -Freedom and health go hand in hand -If you are a proponent of increased government involvement for the sake of safety, you must ask yourself: at what point will you believe the government has gone too far -At a certain point, you must do a cost-benefit analysis -there is a point where the government can take away so much of our freedom to where the costs outweigh the benefits -Everything being done right now by governments in the name of health does not necessarily promote overall happiness and well-being. -At what point is life not worth living? We can keep ourselves safe for the rest of our lives by separating from the outside world, but is that life worth living? -We could see a scenario where the dollar goes up on the DXY, but that doesn't mean that the cost of general goods will go up or down—nor will the stock market necessarily go up or down -From a financial standpoint, people need to consider what is going to happen with government spending -Dollars come out of economy and are re-distributed -What has happened in 2020 and 2021? Consumer price inflation -Is the government going to continue deficit spending? -Quantitative easing (QE) -Government deficit spending may resemble QE—must increase to achieve the desired effect on the economy, which puts it in a state of comatose -General goods/necessities will increase in price -Real estate - ideal to own at 30 year fixed rate mortgage -CDC's control over eviction moratoriums -Foot in the door theory - when people accept a smaller request, they are more likely to accept a larger request later -Foot in the door theory holds for things like COVID guidelines -Is this circumstance simply the global elite using the foot in the door theory? “We are nothing if we don’t have good relationships with other people.” (click to tweet) Sometimes we let people into our life because we feel forced to. Sometimes it’s because they are family, maybe it’s someone who is a friend of a friend, or maybe it’s someone you feel would be a good networking connection. The truth is, if you don’t have a high level of trust it’s not a relationship you are benefitting from. You need to be able to trust them, and it’s just as important that they know they can trust you. If this two-way road doesn’t exist, there will always be friction. You won’t be able to move forward and you’ll end up wasting the most valuable thing you have in this world: time. To dive deeper into the importance of relationships, especially the one you have with yourself, I brought on an amazing expert: Tanya Dube. Tanya is a Transformation & Personal Development Coach, International Keynote Speaker and published author, Tanya-Marie Dubé is the creator and founder of the Thriving After Divorce Radio podcast, an interview-based series geared to women who are going through divorce or separation and who need the fundamental building blocks to permanently overcome debilitating fears, self-limiting beliefs and feelings of victimization so they can thrive in both their personal lives and businesses. Tanya-Marie has been a life coach for 26 years and has a background in Social Psychology and is currently completing certification as a Tony Robbins Results Coach using the methodology and techniques from within Strategic Intervention, a program offered by Tony Robbins and Cloe Madanes at Robbins Madanes Training. Download this episode today to hear all of her insights from years of practice. “Who you are and who you think you are two different people.” (click to tweet) Highlights Are you a leader and are you building leaders? When you build a relationship with yourself, you start to see how you fit into the world. Take the focus off of you and put it onto them. Who you are in the world is created by your actions. Often times your decisions aren’t your own, they are your parents. It’s ok to fail. We cultivate reality throughout thoughts. What comes out of your mouth about other people is a reflection of how you feel about yourself. Pay attention to what you're doing with your body. Notice the language you are using - both internally and externally. The most important conversations you have are the ones you have with yourself. Go ask yourself what it is you really want. “High trust relationships are everything.” (click to tweet)
