Sometimes the challenges to consistency come from self-sabotage, things like distraction, boredom, imposter syndrome. But especially for folks who are neurodivergent or dealing with chronic issues or disabilities, consistency comes with additional challenges that require you to figure out how to manage unpredictable energy levels, or how to cope with executive function issues. Most common productivity advice centers on the idea of trying to do more work, to shove more into the day, to force yourself to change your behavior so you can do more. But what if you don't want to do more? What if you just want to make it easier on yourself to do the work you love?Or what if your brain or energy levels just don't work the same way that the productivity bros hawking the advice do? Then a lot of that advice is just downright useless. The real key is figuring out how your brain works and creating an environment that supports you in doing your best work. And that may take some experimentation, but it probably won't happen following someone else's hacks.Marie Poulin, of Notion Mastery, helps ambitious business owners level up their digital systems, workflow, and productivity, so they can spend more time on what matters. She's been an influential voice in the Notion community, has a big following on her Notion Youtube channel, and has created a lot of the Notion resources available today.Marie also recently discovered that she has ADHD, so her brain works a little differently and things like consistency, scripting or executive functioning–like deciding what to prioritize working on–can be extra challenging.Marie and I talk about consistency and how critical it was to her success with Notion and her course and community Notion Mastery. We also talk about how discovering she was neurodivergent explained so much about how her brain worked and has helped her figure out how to set up systems that work the way she does.Listen to the full episode to hear: How Marie uses making public commitments as an external motivator to keep herself consistent Why she learned to build in opportunities for later iteration and improvement to projects so she can be finished enough for now How Marie stumbled into her ADHD diagnosis and how she gave herself permission to accept that her brain works differently Tools for noting when and how you work best so you can minimize resistance in your schedule Learn more about Marie Poulin: Mariepoulin.com Notion Mastery youtube.com/c/mariepoulin How to Run Your Life Inside of Notion Instagram: @mariepoulin Twitter: @mariepoulin Learn more about Susan: Scalespark.co Twitter @ScaleSpark LinkedIn @thesusanboles

It’s Houston Week! We are kicking it off with Houston-based designer Marie Flanigan. Marie is an award-winning interior designer and the author of The Beauty of Home. Her work has also been featured in publications such as Architectural Digest, ELLE décor, Vogue, Southern Living, Traditional Home, and she also recently had a role on HGTV’s internationally broadcast series Property Brothers: Brother vs. Brother. We talk about Marie’s love of texture, fireplaces, breaking conventions, and the importance of how a space makes you feel. What You’ll Hear on This Episode: How Marie transitioned from her career in architecture to design. Molding or no molding? Marie’s love of using fireplaces as the focal point. How to decide on a focal point in a room. How lighting changes and affects design. Marie’s guidelines for mixing materials, particularly wood. Creating a flex space in the home using sliding doors. All about a growing topic: home offices. How Marie uses sconces. A bedroom in the Telluride project. How Marie likes to use sculptures and “found objects” as art. What is so thrilling about tension in design? Decorating Dilemma Hi Caryn, The first thing I would do is come up with a way to make the dining room feel special. Add drapery, paneling throughout the room, and I definitely think it’s important to case the entry. One thing that casing does for rooms is it allows you to start and stop a wall finish. Then I would take a look at the architecture of the space to see if first I could recess the mud function into the wall and then be able to close it off with doors. That way when you are using the dining room, you could shut off the mess that accumulates in mudrooms. If that’s not possible, I would definitely go with the paneling idea and let the mudroom cabinets be an extension of that paneling so that it follows the same detail of molding on the cabinets. Just make sure you have doors in that area so you can “hide the mess”. You could perhaps lacquer the room or choose a fun color to paint all of the woodwork so that way the garage door just disappears, or you could even have the paneling go across the doors to hide it. Another thought is if you don’t use the dining room often, you could restyle the dining room table so it’s more of a round entryway table and you relocate the chairs to somewhere else while they aren’t in use. If you really want to embrace this as a more casual room, you could even do a built-in banquette under the windows and change from a round table to a square or rectangular table that would allow it to be pushed towards the corner more. Then you could use that bar cabinet for storage. A large area rug could also help to feel the space larger. Good luck, Caryn! Marie Arlen, a holistic coach, joins me on the podcast this week. Before she was drinking her daily green juice and attending self-development workshops, she was an overachiever working in an Ivy League School helping applicants achieve their own dream.  Riddled with chronic stress and exhaustion from living a life on the go, she found her health rapidly declining.    During our conversation, she shares her courageous health journey and provides tangible steps to help you evaluate what you can do to be better in general and healthier specifically.  Despite not being a doctor nor a dietician, Marie decided to go from a state of helplessness to one of someone who can thrive and regain control of her health.   Ten years leading up to leaving Columbia University, she was living with exhaustion, mood changes, skin issues, massive brain fog, and migraines.  After years of being shuffled from doctor to doctor and thousands of dollars spent, she was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease called Hashimoto’s.   With the constant bruises from getting blood drawn and the constant changes in medications with no relief, Marie realized enough was enough. She took her health into her own hands and became her own health advocate. After years of researching and trying different diets and programs, Marie has overcome the majority of the symptoms and now empower others to find their ultimate health so they can then achieve their goals.  Simple shifts in eating habits, mindset, stress management, and eliminating toxins can and will rejuvenate health. Marie says: when we focus on what our bodies need, it can perform on the highest level.  It becomes no longer about survival, but about thriving in all aspects of life. Because with health, we have it all.  Marie offers a reminder to be intentional with your time, your food, and your circle of support. And, her story is one that encourages us all to be our own advocate!! Figure out what is going to help you to take care of yourself. Don’t just cope with feeling less than vital. Look to solve it as best you can.  Feel empowered, take action.    Marie just launched Drink to Health an e-book with smoothie, juice, and drink recipes that help increase energy, boost moods, and rejuvenate your health.  She is also providing online group coaching set to launch in October for those looking to decrease toxins in their lives (body, home, relationships, mindset). This conversation is perfect for anyone who wishes they felt a heightened sense of vitality to crush their life goals and empower those around them to do the same too. We delve into a common sign of fatigue brain fog. Marie shared her personal journaling exercises that can help you to figure out your ideal healthy future self and how to no longer let anyone make you feel like a victim even if you are not a trained doctor. Do the exercises for 21-days and check in to let me know how you feel. You can go so in our complimentary Facebook group for podcast listeners. See the details below.  Highlights: During this pandemic, there hasn’t been any news or resources relating to building your own immune system. Marie describes why she decided to write a book based on the single easiest way to get as many nutrients in her body in one shot. (5:37)  How Marie found the time to write a book during the pandemic swapping empty for being intentional about her time and giving herself grace when things didn’t go according to her plans. (7:26) Her 10-year health journey that included brain fog as well as being prescribed medications that didn’t work. (9:47) Changing from, “I am a victim to my body,” to “My body is capable of healing.”  She describes how her strategy was finding people who overcame harder diseases. (12:34) What triggered her to find answers to help treat her thyroid condition and how she knew a pill was not enough. (14:58) Her journey to becoming a holistic health coach and why she wants to help others uncover what vitality could feel like in their life. (15:42) Beyond changing her diet, she focuses on a positive mindset, which was key to her health and wellness. (18:40) If you’ve tried to be healthy and haven’t been successful, Marie offers some strategies which could help. (27:08) If you let go of processed food for 21 days, moving forward it will be hard to crave processed foods, and instead, you will desire foods with more nutrients and vibrancy. (28:10) Try this exercise: Create a food feeling diary to help identify how you feel after eating a certain food or foods. (29:04) Pre-pandemic office culture - how can we avoid getting sucked back into mindless snacking while working or culture of processed food at the office. When we first started working together, Marie would list out her bills in her planner and “x” out everything that had been paid with her most recent paycheck until she got to what was “left over”. She viewed the money she had left as spending money until the next time she was paid. It probably sounds like Marie had a good handle on her money but this system wasn't working all that well for her. Because even though she was paying attention to her bills and had recently received a pay increase, she still didn't have enough money left over at the end of the day to spend on things she enjoyed and she had nothing in savings. After searching for a financial advisor, she found my site and realized that she didn't need a financial advisor. She needed a coach who could help her figure out how she was spending money day to day. In this episode, Marie talks about how we started working together and how her experience permanently shifted the way she sees money. She shares her story of only having $0 in savings to having saved more than $800 in just four weeks of us working together. She discusses the results she's seen including finally having an emergency savings and being able to ask herself if a purchase is really worth it or not. She shares how she's developed confidence around money, how she's been able to consistently keep $1500 in her checking account to go towards bills, and how she's going to increase her savings goal in the upcoming months because she now knows how to achieve it. Marie has had some really incredible breakthroughs and I know you'll find inspiration from the progress she's made over the past year! Here are just a few things you'll learn when you listen in: How Marie stumbled upon needing financial coaching services and the difference between a financial coach and a financial advisor. How she manages her money to cover her current and upcoming expenses Why Marie has found it to be easy to consistently set aside $250 a month in her emergency fund The strategies that have worked for Marie to overcome emotional spending and overspending. Beginning with a shamanic song that rocks me to my core every time I listen to it, the episode you’re about to participate in is more ceremony than interview. If you watch it on video, you will see the moment my heart cracks open — and it just gets better from there. Led by our guest Dr. Marie Mbouni, this is also one of the most meaningful and profound experiences I’ve been able to share on the show. As the social unrest unfolded over the last few months, I did a lot of soul searching and contemplation on the cultural pain body with which we are now squarely faced. It’s so clear that humanity is in dire need of healing; the powers that be seem hellbent on creating more racial and political division and many are taking the bait. The more I see, the more confident I am that the solution to all of this suffering is in discovering the truth about who we are — both as individuals and as one human race. We are spiritual beings having a brief life experience in bodies, and on the level of spirit, there is no separation between us.  The challenge is in helping those entrapped by the illusion of separation and the fear that that illusion creates. True, lasting change must take place in the quantum realm of energy before it can manifest here in the physical plane of matter. Luckily, there are few voices more capable of helping people understand our shared consciousness and the collective power we wield than Dr. Mbouni. With years of experience as both a Western doctor and a spiritual guide, she’s able to make Shamanic healing practices more accessible to a Western audience. Maintaining a positive mindset in times of adversity can seem impossible to some, especially when they feel their life is slipping through their fingers. But having faith and believing that all the hard lessons have a scope and a meaning, and visualizing what’s on the other side of the struggle can really help with overcoming almost anything.Today, I have a real hero with me, Marie Zoutomou-Quintanilla – a cancer survivor that has become a blessing to others. We discuss how she managed to win her fight against disease, what she’s doing now to help others that go through similar experiences, and the importance of choosing self-care first and foremost.Marie is the epitome of perseverance and determination. As a teenager, she moved to the US from West Africa - unable to speak, read, or write in English. She dabbled in entrepreneurship as a teenager by selling cookies she baked herself, and eventually, she enrolled at the University of Phoenix, ready to pursue the dream of owning her own business.Marie turned adversity into action when, at the age of 31, she received the unexpected news of having Stage Three Breast Cancer. She had a difficult time accepting the diagnosis, especially because she knew she had led a healthy lifestyle, and the cancer was not genetic, but that didn’t stop her to keep pursuing her dreams.According to her, God gave her another chance to life, and now, years later, she’s a tremendous motivational speaker, a volunteer – raising money every day for different cancer projects – and most important to her, she’s a mother of a healthy three-year-old girl. As another way of giving to others, Marie wrote the book “You Are Being Tested” in the hope that people dealing with cancer can be motivated to not throw their gloves, yet.Listen to Episode 41 of Rejuvenaging, to find out more about how her positive mindset, her fierce determination, and commitment to her goals have helped Marie become a real inspiration for anyone, regardless of what they’re going through. (05:56)How did you use positivity to deal with cancer and to become resilient as you did? (06:43)What about the author part of you? What have you written? My guest Marie Young unexpectedly found her true calling in a dark moment of her own binge eating and self-comparison. It happened the moment she snuck into her husband's Facebook account to stalk his ex-girlfriend. For years, Marie had an unhealthy relationship with food and being thin. She chose careers based on status and people-pleasing, and food based on calories and how it would supposedly make her look. Disconnected from her body, she used food to punish herself instead of nourish, yet once she made the change from disconnection to connection, everything else transformed for the better. Marie is a holistic nutritionist and "food freedom" life coach via her website: Bloom with Marie. Her signature nutritional expertise combined with spiritual life coaching helps women free themselves from food obsession, so they can finally love the way they look and feel. We discuss: Marie's upbringing on a sailboat in the South of France Her people-pleasing career choices in sailing boats and flying airplanes The deep dark secret that led Marie to a plant-based vegan diet The Skinny Bitch diet book and how Marie found pleasure in creating food Discovering balance and feeling good eating a plant-based diet How food quality instead of counting calories helped her feel good Marie Forleo says: "Don't drink the compareshlager!" How Marie stopped comparing herself and felt healthier inside out Marie's approach "from filling a hole to feeling whole" Intuitive eating and being open on a plant-based diet Ditching labels and feeling free to choose foods in a healthy way How Marie suffered from Hypothalamic Amenorrhea and healed with plant-based foods Mothering, food choices as a family, feeding kids, and enjoying meals The communal connection of eating together Mentioned: Ashley Gordon, Badass Manifester Podcast Connect with Marie: Bloom with Marie website Instagram: @bloomwithmarie Facebook: Bloom with Marie Thank you for listening to Plantfull Life Podcast! Marie Forleo has been an inspiration, a friend, and a mentor to me ever since I left corporate and started into the world of online business. When it comes to business she's seen it all, from humble beginnings offering life coaching for free to being on stage with Oprah (yes, that Oprah). Needless to say, she has accomplished a lot. Marie feels strongly (and I agree!) that we need more brilliant, creative humans to believe in themselves so that they can go out and make a difference in the world. That was the inspiration that pushed her to write her brand new book, Everything Is Figureoutable. I recently sat down with Marie to talk about the book and I picked out topics that I thought would be especially helpful for you to hear. Marie held nothing back and shared some gems that I know you're going to love. This episode will have you feeling like everything really is figureoutable. Here’s a sneak peek of what we covered: How Marie finally decided to write her book (and why she waited, even after being courted by publishers) Listening to that little voice in your head (Marie tells how her mom was the first to teach her about this inner guidance system!) Marie's quick test to determine whether you're acting out of fear or intuition How your beliefs are shaping you (a great model that I've been following for the last year, but Marie takes it even deeper) Calling out your excuses (she explains how a slight change in semantics can be a game-changer in your life and business) What to do when fear creeps in (and you know it will!)  Getting clarity on what you actually want (believe it or not, most people are not crystal clear on what they want to create, but there IS a way to get clear) Avoiding the pitfalls of perfectionism (learn about the severity of the destructiveness of perfectionism)   You’ve gotta get your hands on Marie’s book, Everything is Figureoutable. Pre-order it now and get the 5-day coaching experience that Marie's offering to all pre-orderers.
