There's nothing on the planet quite like live events. IEBA President *Wade Asher* of Chippewa Valley Music Festivals is eager to kick off his comeback year with Country Fest in June and Rock Fest in July. In this edition of IEBA Interviews, he reminisces about watching his favorite bands play the songs he loves and seeing the electric connection between artists and fans at his events. Plus, with the IEBA conference on the horizon in October, IEBA Executive Director Pam Matthews and Wade share what they love about the organization - from collaborating and building relationships with respected industry leaders to bonding over shared passion for the fundamental element of our business: incredible music.
Not even COVID could take down the world's longest running broadcast. The Grand Ole Opry remained on the air without a live audience for half of 2020. Then in October, the big red curtain came up for the show's 95th anniversary with a limited-capacity audience. Recently, capacity was increased to just over 1,000. The Opry's VP/Executive Director *Dan Rogers* joined us on a Zoom call to share how his team adapted their procedures and worked with the city to allow this crown jewel of Nashville to welcome fans back to the Grand Ole Opry House.
The San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo's mid-to-late-February timing means that its 2020 edition was one of the last large-scale concert events before COVID struck the US. Having just produced the adapted "Retro Rodeo" for 2021, *Mallory Hines,* who serves as Entertainment & Exhibits Officer, spoke with us about the lessons learned while re-inventing her show and how good it felt to bring live music back to the masses once.
Pam Matthews is a proven industry leader with four decades of experience in the entertainment business. She began her career at age fifteen as a runner for Mid South Concerts in Memphis. Today, she serves the live entertainment industry as Executive Director of one of its most influential trade organizations. Matthews toured as an accountant for KISS and Ozzy Osbourne in the early 80s and was part of the Pace Concerts (now Live Nation) team that designed, constructed, and managed Starwood Amphitheatre in Nashville. In 1988, after three seasons at 18,000+ capacity concert venue, Matthews accepted a marketing/accounting position with The Judds’ in-house booking agency and production company Pro Tours, Inc. In 1991 Pro Tours promoted 110 of the 128 sold-out concerts on The Judds Farewell Tour, which was second to the Grateful Dead as the highest grossing North American tour that year. As Wynonna began her solo career and restructured her business, Matthews joined the management side of the organization and eventually became Vice President & Treasurer of Wynonna, Inc. and J2K, Inc. As an officer of J2K, Inc., Matthews headed the multi-company team that produced The Judds’ sold-out New Year’s Eve 1999 concert and the 2000 reunion tour that followed. In 2000, Gaylord Entertainment selected Pam Matthews to be General Manager of Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium. During her tenure, the Ryman became one of the top-grossing theaters in North America and received its National Historic Landmark status and numerous awards including its first-ever Pollstar Theatre of the Year, Academy of Country Music Venue of the Year, and IEBA Venue of the Year honors. In 2008, Matthews resigned her position at the Ryman to be with her husband, a decorated Special Operations Team Leader in the U.S. Army, while he was stationed at the Presidio of Monterey, California. Matthews and her husband, who is now a legislative attorney with the Tennessee General Assembly, settled back home in Nashville in 2012. Matthews joined IEBA as its Executive Director in 2013. Since then, the 50-year-old organization has tripled its membership and attendance at its annual conference continues to sell-out year after year. In 2017, IEBA established its Educational Outreach Fund, a 501(c)(3) charity that has endowed over $1M in scholarships at universities across the country and awards $75k annually to students seeking a career in the entertainment industry.Matthews attended Christ Church College, Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. In 1989, she passed the Uniform Certified Public Accountant Examination. During her career, Pam Matthews has been featured in numerous publications including Billboard, Pollstar, Better Homes & Gardens, and The Tennessean. In 2006, Billboard magazine ranked Matthews on its first “Women in Music” list. Recent honors include Nashville Business Journal “Women in Music City” and VenuesNow “Women of Influence.” Matthews has served on the Board of Directors of the Opry Trust Fund, Nashville Downtown Partnership, Leadership Music, and Americana Music Association, and currently serves on the Music City Music Council’s Leadership Forum and Leadership Music’s program committee. Last year was a time of deep reflection on issues of equity, but merely asking ourselves difficult questions is insufficient. Concrete action is the next step, and few have taken this to heart as deeply as Fitz and The Tantrums' *Noelle Scaggs.* Struck by the lack of diversity in her professional environment, she created *Diversify the Stage* ( https://ieba.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?e=7b52d78f29&id=6d48163757&u=54a106a9ff9e76f7693267f2a ) in Spring 2020 with a mission to transform the live performance and concert touring industry to reflect our diverse communities. In this edition of IEBA Interviews, Noelle discusses Diversify the Stage's programs and puts a call to action out to IEBA members for *:* * *Mentors* * *Internship opportunities* * *Contributions to fund Summer Internship Scholarships*.

The American economy crosses borders, oceans, time zones, cultures, languages and great walls. And therefore, compensation and benefits has gone global, too. For many multinational companies, figuring out how to scale employee benefits for a global population is a critical element of their economic competitiveness. Here at the Council, we’re engaged on global benefits in numerous ways, from functioning as the U.S. chapter of the International Employee Benefit Association (or “IEBA”) to serving as a private-sector advisor to the U.S. delegation to the Organizational for Economic Cooperation and Development. We’re also focused on practical matters for global employee benefit plan sponsors like governance, controlling costs, health plan offerings, employee mobility, mergers and acquisitions and much, much more. In this episode, host Jason Hammersla talks to Mark Azzarello, vice president, global compensation & benefits, for the International Paper Company. Azzarello is a member of the American Benefits Council’s board of directors and chair of the Council’s Global Benefits Committee. In this wide-ranging conversation, Azzarello describes the objectives of the Global Benefits Committee and the upshot of the group’s October 2019 meeting. He also describes International Paper’s distinctive approach to employee benefits policy including global governance, employee financial wellness and electronic disclosure.

Welcome to another episode of Making It with Chris G where we have Conversations with people in the world of entertainment who are making it, from behind the scenes to the spotlight. Sharing their stories and insight to help you get one step closer to Making It. Today’s guest. Alec Vidmar is a true hustler! He’s someone that’s patient, and always gives more to his relationships than he asks from them. From day one when he was a student at UCF he dived in head first into the music business. He started working with the UCF Concert Committee which lead to him being able to work with AEG Live as a runner and promoter rep, and also interning with Fly South Music Group, a management company based in Orlando, FL. Then he worked as a Talent Buyer for Club Firestone which is now Venue 578 in Orlando, FL. He worked in Artist Relations with me at The Plaza Live in Orlando, FL, while also managing artist for Average Joe’s Entertainment. He learned every aspect of the business as a promoter and manager, and then became a booking agent which lead him to move to Nashville. As a booking agent he continued to hustle and work hard for his artist’s which landed him a job with The Agency Group which later on got bought by United Talent Agency. One of the biggest booking agencies in the world. Alec lives by example by making the music industry not a career, but a lifestyle. And he gives so much to that career and his artist, that he recently got recognized nominated by IEBA – the International Entertainment Buyers Association for Young Professional of the Year. Alec’s work ethic is going to continue to bring him great experiences, and he’s someone that’s going to be very successful in this business. I’m very happy to share his journey up to this point with you in this interview with Alec Vidmar. As promised in the intro of this episode. Here is my graphic on elements that make up one's story.
Dave Kusek is a digital music executive and is responsible for helping to create the market for digital music and in 1980 he founded the first music software company, Passport Designs, which made it possible for musicians to record and produce their music at home with its award-winning software. Kusek is the co-author of The Future of Music – a best-selling music business book. He also provides advisory services to the music and media industries via Digital Cowboys. He is a co-developer of the Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) industry standard that opened up electronic music to millions of people. His efforts, along with others, set the stage for the multi-billion dollar digital music market that exists today. He created a hugely successful online music school berkleemusic.com for the prestigious Berklee College of Music. Berkleemusic has become the world's largest music school teaching over 15,000 students a year globally. Kusek has written for or been featured in the NY Times, Boston Globe, Billboard, Wired, Associated Press, MTV, CNBC, Forbes, NBC-TV, Nightly Business Report, NPR, Financial Times, and is a featured speaker at Midem, Digital Music Forum, NAMM, AES, IEBA, MacWorld, Comdex, Digital Hollywood and has been a featured guest on radio and television stations around the world.
Wade Asher is the general manager of Country Fest and Rock Fest - 3-day festivals drawing 25,000-30,000 per day to his grounds in Cadott, WI. We sat down with Wade to hear how he creates a hyper-engaged community around his events, why he attends marketing conferences outside of the music industry, and to hear about his brand new event Upheaval, which comes to Michigan this summer.
With the volume of show cancellations facing our industry, everyone is poring over their force majeure clauses to see what their options are. In this IEBA Interview, industry veteran Bob Cavalieri demystifies the provision and explains the legal doctrines of impossibility, impracticability, frustration of purpose, and more.
ASM Jacksonville's Zane Collings and Fiserv Forum's Raj Saha spoke with us about how their venues are serving the community during the fight against COVID-19 and preparing to reopen when the "back to business" signal is sent.
