When voters voted against Prop A last November, Amarillo became the first city in the United States to reject an abortion travel ban proposition. Lindsay shares about her nursing career, her early activism, and how she ended up the voice of ARFA in national news stories about Amarillo's opposition to the ordinance. She also shares with host Jason Boyett what her activism has taught her about the people of the Texas Panhandle. Arī šodien Īrijā var sastapt māksliniekus, kas seko šīm senajām tradīcijām, izpildot īru tradicionālo mūziku un dziesmas. Interesants ir fakts, ka ķeltu arfu spēlēja nevis ar pirkstu galu spilventiņiem, kā to dara šodien, bet ar īpaši ataudzētiem nagiem. Tas skanējumam deva savdabīgu nokrāsu. Bet arfisti, kas bija nogrēkojušies, saņēma bargu sodu – viņiem apgrieza nagus… Arfas zelta laikmets beidzās pēc ķeltu un britu apdzīvoto teritoriju iekarošanas. Tad tika izdots liels skaits aizliegumu, kuru mērķis bija izskaust vietējo iedzīvotāju kultūru. Viņiem nebija atļauts valkāt tautastērpus, izmantot tradicionālos simbolus, bija aizliegts spēlēt arfu, nereti viņu instrumenti tika sadedzināti. Par spīti ierobežojumiem arfas spēles tradīcijas saglabājās un arfa kā simbols Īrijā mirdz vēl šodien.
Stāsta arfiste un koklētāja, Latvijas Nacionālā simfoniskā orķestra arfu grupas koncertmeistare Ieva Šablovska Arfa vienlaikus ir viens no vissenākajiem un arī visjaunākajiem mūzikas instrumentiem. Kāpēc tā? Neraugoties uz arfas seno izcelsmi, kas meklējama senajās civilizācijās, instruments attīstījies ļoti lēnām un eksperimentēšanas rezultātā mūsdienu klasiskā koncertarfa izveidojusies tikai 1801. gadā. Kā jau stāstījām iepriekš, arfas rašanās datēta vismaz ar trešo gadu tūkstoti pirms mūsu ēras. Tā kā vienīgās liecības par senajiem instrumentiem ir tikai arheologiskajos izrakumos atrastie mākslas darbi – freskas, zīmējumi, trauki, kā arī pašu instrumentu fragmenti, var tikai iztēloties, kā instruments reāli izskatījās, kā skanēja un kā to pielietoja. Visticamāk, ka Āzijā un Eiropā arfa tika ievesta no Tuvajiem Austrumiem, precīzāk – no Ēģiptes. Viduslaikos tagadējās Britu salās klejojošie muzikanti attīstīja ķeltu arfu. Neskatoties uz to, ka arfa bija izplatīta visā Eiropā, tik lielu arfas uzplaukumu kā Britu salās tā neguva nekur. Un ķeltu arfas kā tautas instrumenta nozīme ir liela vēl šodien. Par to stāstīsim nākamajā sērijā. Paralēli Eiropai Dienvidamerikā attīstījās Paragvajas arfa, kas ir ļoti populāra arī mūsdienās. Arfa turp aizceļoja ar spāņu imigrantiem. Parasti tai ir 32-46 stīgas, un to pārsvarā spēlē ar nagiem, atskaņojot tautas mūziku. Ir zināms, ka arī citur pasaulē arfveidīgos instrumentus lieto kā tradicionālos instrumentus. Piemēram, koru izmanto Rietumāfrikas zemēs dažādos rituālos, pavadot dziedātājus. Savukārt klasiskās koncertarfas attīstība noritēja tieši Eiropā. Viduseiropas valstīs arfa gan izskata, gan pielietojuma un spēles manieres ziņā atšķīrās no ķeltu arfas, to dēvēja par gotu arfu jeb gotisko arfu. Tā atšķīrās ar īpatnējo izskatu un skaņu – tā bija slaida, ar gotisku dekoratīvo elementu klāstu. No viduslaikiem saglabājušies arī pirmie nošu pieraksti, kas ļauj izzināt tā laika spēles tradīcijas. Lai gan šobrīd vēl tiek izmantotas gotiskās arfas, uz šīs arfas bāzes sākās eksperimenti, lai radītu mūsdienās zināmo koncertarfu. 16. gadsimtā tika izveidota hromatiskā arfa, bet tā neiegāja arfistu apritē sava neērtuma dēļ. Arfa bija krasi jāuzlabo, dodot iespēju arfistiem spēlēt ne tikai diatoniski (nemūziķu valodā – tikai pa klavieru baltajiem taustiņiem), bet arī ar hromatismiem (jeb melnajiem taustiņiem). Tā 1660. gadā tapa pirmā āķu mehānismu arfa, kuru izveidoja kāds nezināms tiroliešu meistars. Spēles laikā arfisti ar kreiso roku pārslēdza āķus, lai paaugstinātu vai pazeminātu katru konkrēto skaņu, bet tas radīja neērtības spēlētājam. Lai arī tas bija ļoti liels progress arfas pilnveidē, tomēr instruments vēl bija nepilnīgs. 1720. gadā bavāriešu meistars Jakobs Hohbrukers konstruēja pirmās vienas darbības pedāļu arfas. Pedālis ļāva pa pustoni pārslēgt konkrētās skaņas visās oktāvās uzreiz. Sākumā viņš konstruēja piecu, bet vēlāk - septiņu pedāļu arfas. Pedāļu arfas izgudrojums bija ļoti nozīmīgs uzlabojums, tomēr vēl nebija iespēja spēlēt skaņdarbus visās tonalitātēs. Pēc Hohbrukera veiksmīgāku arfu konstruēja franču meistaru Kuzino ģimene, izgudrojot pat 14 pedāļu arfu. Tā deva iespēju spēlēt visās tonalitātēs, taču tik liels pedāļu skaits apgrūtināja arfistu spēli un instruments netika pielietots. Un tikai 1801. gadā pēc arfista Žana Batista Krumholca idejām un ierosinājumiem franču klaviermeistars Sebastjans Erārs konstruēja pirmo pedāļu arfu ar dubultdarbības pedāļiem. Tāpat kā mammai gammai ir septiņi bērni – do, re, mi, fa, sol, la un si, tāpat arfai nu bija septiņi pedāļi – ar tādiem pašiem nosaukumiem. Tā bija sensācija! Tas ļāva katrai stīgai atskanēt trīs pustoņu pozīcijās – kā diēzā, tā bekarā un bemolā. Kad esat rokas stiepienā no arfas, papētiet, kā tas izskatās un palūdziet arfistam parādīt, kā tas darbojas… Tā nu ir tapusi klasiskā koncertarfa, bet ar to eksperimenti nebeidzas. Jāpiemin arī hromatiskā arfa, kuru Francijā 1895. gadā izgudroja Gustavs Laiens (Lian). Šis ļoti komplicētais instruments tā arī netika iemīļots. Hromatiskā bezpedāļu arfa ieinteresēja vairākus komponistus, taču pedāļu trūkums, kas atviegloja arfistu spēli, liedza iespēju atskaņot uz arfas vienu no galvenajiem efektiem – glissando. 20. gadsimta 70., 80. gados tika radīta arī elektriskā arfa, kas ir aprīkota ar elektromagnētiskiem noņēmējiem, lai pārvērstu skaņu un dotu iespēju pieslēgties pastiprinātājiem.

In this episode of NL Hafta, Newslaundry’s Abhinandan Sekhri, Manisha Pande and Mehraj D Lone are joined by Arfa Khanum, senior editor at The Wire.Kicking off with the Aam Aadmi Party’s involvement — or lack of it — in the aftermath of the Delhi violence, Arfa says she’s very surprised. She says she’s heard that the party “is punishing its voters who just voted them back to power for the third consecutive time”. Mehraj asks why the state government seems to have outsourced its own work to third parties. Manisha recalls many volunteers said they didn’t see many AAP workers on the ground in the early days after the violence.The panel then discusses patriotism. Abhinandan says he doesn’t see the value in patriotism. “It doesn’t have a place in the 21st century,” he says. Manisha describes patriotism as a “value of oneness”. Arfa says her country is her people, and standing up for minority rights that are being trampled is “real patriotism”. Mehraj points out how movements like the BJP and the Sangh Parivar have “blurred the distinction between nationalism and patriotism”.Moving on to the coronavirus pandemic, the panel debate whether the frenzy around it is justified. Mehraj quotes the scientific community’s consensus that this is serious, “since the human body hasn’t encountered it before”. In the context of the dismal state of India’s healthcare system, he says: “This is what you should prepare for, this is why you need robust healthcare.” The conversation also spans the media’s coverage of the pandemic, and the panellists agree that Indian authorities have done a decent job of dealing with it — unlike the US.Ending with Jyotiraditya Scindia’s defection to the BJP, Mehraj says, “This is a symptom of a dying party.” He says theCongress has become a party of grifters and there’s nothing binding their people together unlike the BJP. Manisha disagrees, saying the Congress could revive, “only if we remove the Gandhis”. Abhinandan says “Gandhi” is the party’s ideology and it’s nothing without his name.
