by Ed Shanaphy There's always that guy. The guy that is on the sidelines of every tournament, from a WTA qualifier to an ATP Masters to a Grand Slam. The guy who amazes onlookers through his building of a network. The guy who continues to work, even after retirement and sleeps in the back of a Suburban on the way to the next event. The guy who finally creates such volumes of great work, it brings him to the top of his profession from roots deep in the industry. The guy that becomes a legend and works with legends. On the tennis tour, that guy is Gary Kitchell. Kitchell, or Kitch as he is called by his hundreds - if not thousands - of colleagues and friends, is known around the world as one of the leading physiotherapists who graced tournament tennis courts across the globe. From the hallowed lawn of Centre Court at Wimbledon and the hard cement of Louis Armstrong Court at the US Open to the back courts at the 1990s Volvo ATP Tour stop in New Haven, Kitchell has worked with some of the greatest tennis players of all time. From the era of Borg and McEnroe, to the following upstarts Sampras and Agassi, to Federer and through to today's Tommy Paul, Reilly Opelka and Maria Sakkari, Kitch has treated injuries, reduced stress on the body and helped strength train numerous number one players to new heights. Gary loves tennis. It's always been a part of his life. His early days saw him teaching the indoor season in his native New Jersey. Soon after, he followed the sun as most instructors do and playing in semi-professional tournaments and was noticed at a small club in Vero Beach, Sea Oaks, at which he started his road along the highways and byways of the professional tours. His views of the professional tennis tours are from an interesting objective - a viewpoint from outside the employ of either the men's or women's tour but from within the fires that comprise the professional game and the travel demanded of today's tennis stars. He sees the challenges that the professional tour faces today as the Davis Cup limps along while the Laver Cup becomes a global phenomenon. He also sees the difficulty private members clubs may have using the professional game as a catalyst to new members as the tour lengthens its season and the tournaments are diluted by so much television and streamed coverage. An understanding of the professional game helps Gary to see where tennis may be headed on the amateur level at tennis and country clubs across the country. A commitment to building a community and social network at any club needs to be a priority to continue the sport's growth as it faces challenges from pickleball and padel. As a member of several private members clubs, Gary has some sage advice for club managers and directors in the club management arena. Join Gary on the BeyondTheBaselines.com podcast.

When they recorded this episode, the metagame breakdown for Pro Tour Outlaws of Thunder Junction had just been posted. Since Gerry hadn't seen it yet, Dave decided to have a little fun with him… Maybe these sorts of predictions were why Gerry usually did poorly in Pro Tours. *** Check out our sponsor, HeavyPlay! You've spent time writing songs. You've gone into the studio to record some demos. Now it's time to get out there and pitch your artistry to the masses. But how do you go about doing it? Do you need a manager to help you thru the gauntlet known as the music industry? Is your career at a point where you would be ready for a manager? We talk with Chuck Thompson, who is a 40+ year veteran in the music industry, having worked in the Country music field as a manager for such acts as The Judds, Billy Dean, McBride, and The Ride, The Pirates of the Mississippi, Carl Perkins, Skip Ewing, Wynonna, Michell Wright, and others. Chuck explains what you need to look for, and what management will expect in return. He discusses how management is a specific need at a specific time for a specific function. We also go into what the difference is between an artist manager and a business manager. We touch base on what does a prospective manager look for when signing a new act? Is it based on their social media, their touring, or their record sales if applicable? Chuck Thompson began his 40 plus years in the entertainment industry while attending Nashville's prestigious Belmont College. It was there that a posting for an internship in publicity caught his eye. That internship turned into his first job when he was hired during his final year of study at the college to drive the media campaigns for David Allen Coe, Frizzell & West, Ricky Skaggs, The Flying Burrito Brothers, and George Strait. He cut his artist management teeth with acts Baillie and the Boys and comedy duo Pinkard and Bowden at the firm. Transitioning to the management firm The Ken Stilts Company where he would rise to the position of Vice President, Thompson and his team guided the careers of The Judds, Billy Dean, McBride, and The Ride, The Pirates of the Mississippi, Carl Perkins, Skip Ewing, Wynonna, and others. He worked alongside company principles to build an integrated corporate sponsorship/artist booking agency to work within the corporate and country music communities. While serving as Vice President/Director Of Public Relations for Pro Tours, the company launched co-branded country music tours for corporate clients GMC Trucks, Liberty Optical, The Sara Lee Corporation, and Sun Country Wine Coolers. In 1995, Thompson accepted the position of Director, Media Relations & Artist Development with the newly reorganized RCA Label Group Nashville. Working with the established RCA roster and with the BNA staff to launch the careers of recently signed artists Kenny Chesney, Lonestar, and Mindy McCready, he also created the label's media and sales opportunities' extensive catalog of masters. While leading the label's NASCAR efforts, working with the Kranefuss-Haus Racing Team, he developed marketing events for RCA and BNA artists and the race team's co-sponsors Little Caesar's Pizza and Kmart at racing events around the country. In October of 1996, Chuck left the RCA Label Group to return to the ranks of artist management as a co-manager of Decca recording artist Danni Leigh, opening the Thompson Entertainment Group's offices under the banner “Where music still has A Heart and A Soul.” He explains that tagline by saying, “In a world of broadening entertainment options, music is the thread that runs through it all, impacting every part of our lives. The truth in a great song and the heart of a great singer drives my passion, and my goal has always been to develop long-term brand strategies for each of our artists. In these unusual times, artists need new and innovative thinking from their management to adapt to the world we currently live in.” Corporate brands are also searching for innovative thinkers who understand a brand's needs and can create and execute unique, brand-driven partnerships. Harley Davidson, Coca-Cola, Panoptix, Conagra Foods, and others have turned to Chuck to help them develop and implement a brand strategy that will reach their customers through music-driven events. In 2016, the Navigator Records imprint was added to the TEG umbrella. The latest evolution in the company's growth allowed Thompson to utilize the many modern technologies and creative outlets now available to create a higher profile for the Thompson Entertainment Group family of artists. In the fall of 2018, Navigator Records released new studio recordings from Canadian Country Music Hall Of Fame artist Michelle Wright, her first new music since the 2013 release of Strong. Other Navigator releases have included Wright's recording of the Christmas classic “Silver Bells,” released to coincide with A Wright Christmas: 2019 tour across the Alberta and Ontario provinces of Canada. 2020 into 2021 has also given rise to a new breed of creators. Navigator Records has provided major label services and distribution to those independent artists and labels who want to maintain their creative vision without sacrificing ownership or control while assisting established and developing artists eager to build and sustain meaningful careers. www.thompsonentertainmentgroup.com www.navigatorrecords.com The Business Side of Music ™ Lotta Dogs Productions LLC Co-Produced and Hosted (by the guy who has a face for podcasting): Bob Bender Co-Producer, Creator, and Technical Advisor (the man behind the curtain): Tom Sabella Director of Video and Continuity (the brains of the entire operation): Deborah Halle Audio/Video Editor Mark Sabella Midnight Express Studio Olian, NY Marketing and Social Media: Kaitlin Fritts Executive Assistant to Bob and Tom (the one who keeps us on track and our schedules straight) Tammy Kowalski All Around Problem Solver: Connie Ribas Recorded at: The Bunker in Franklin, TN (except during the Covid 19 pandemic, then it's pretty much done VIA Skype or over the phone, with the exception for those fearless enough to come to Bob Bender's living room… and there are a few). John Ashton - Show Host That's me. I'm a terrific radio personality (in my own humble yet never-the-less expert opinion) and a lousy golfer. And I wonder how my life would have turned out if those were reversed. But, I learn to live with it. I've entertained morning radio audiences from Bangor, Maine to Atlanta, Georgia and many cities in between. I have embarrassed myself on golf courses in all those cities too. And for reasons I am loathe to speak out loud, I never, ever, took a golf lesson. And I'd tell people that like it is something to be proud of. I love to share my frustrations and challenges, wins and losses with you because I know you have done the exact same things I've done, made the same mistakes, had the same disappointments on the course. So we can relate to each other. What if you could find a Golf Radio Show that was not hosted by some washed up former Pro golfer? What if you could find a Golf Talk Show that isn't condescending (that means they talk down to you) because your average drive is not 300+ yards and your go-to club for a 160 yard fairway shot is your 6 iron, not a pitching wedge? What you are looking for is a Golf Talk Radio Show that talks to us, the average golfer; the folks who have never broken 80 in our lives; the ones who hope to live to 102 so they can "shoot their age"; the folks that realize they are mere mortals playing a game obviously designed by, and for, gods. We are that show! Those Weekend Golf Guys. You will never hear us discussing Tiger's chances of regaining his #1 position or whether Jordan Spieth screwed up his game by getting married. You know why? WE DON'T CARE! We don't care about the PGA Tour, WEB.com Tour, or any of the Pro Tours. We do care about you. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Butch Buchholz had an idea. He had an idea as to what professional tennis should look like. He had a dream and he played and toured the world with a vision. And in August of 1967 he played in front of a packed Centre Court at Wimbledon and guaranteed the presence of paid professional players returning to Wimbledon in June of 1968 and the beginning of the Open Era. Wimbledon, in 1967, had invited 8 of the touring pros - back before pros were allowed to play at all the Grand Slams. The pros were a group of "vagabonds" and the chairman of the club Herman David, said if you fill Centre Court, I don't care what the ITF says, you're invited to come play as pros at Wimbledon. They filled Centre Court. Buchholz is the man behind what we know as today's ATP and WTA Tours. In his own words he admits he turned pro too early - but he got what he wanted in the end. A tour, a tournament and a tennis life. As Executive Director of the ATP Tour, Buchholz has always worked hard on behalf of the players. He founded, almost singlehandedly, the Lipton Championships, first held in Delray Beach and now known as The Miami Open. "Golf has The Players, and we always wanted something like that for our tennis professionals." The Lipton, which began as the professionals' tournament, was the first tournament stop that had both the men and the women playing together. Butch fought the tour and demanded that the paying spectators really wanted to see the men and women compete at the same venue. And, basically, that's what we have today at Indian Wells, The Miami Open and all the Grand Slams. Butch was, and still is, ahead of his time. Andy Roddick accepts the NASDAQ trophy from Butch Buchholz He fought the neighbors of Crandon Park at the zoning board and battled the powers of Miami-Dade County to build what many players have called the best arena in the sport. His love and passion for the game and his fellow players led Buchholz to establish a fund which acted as a pension for all the professional players, which exists to this day. When journalists would rank the players long before the points system, Buchholz was ranked as high as number five in the world and was continually named the best American player. Holding the career Grand Slam as a junior long before the pros were allowed in the main draws, Buchholz travelled the world and tried to time his entry to the pro level. He looks with great fondness back on his years traveling the world as one of the Handsome Eight, and laughs when he tries to compare today's tour with the tour back in the last 60s. Junior, Be Aware Of Your Surroundings.Butch Buchholz Butch takes us through how he built his first 10-court club, Town and Tennis in St. Louis, and how he quickly realized there was so much more to the tennis industry than chasing yellow fuzzy tennis balls around a court. He had no idea the meaning of "cashflow" He met a businessman in the St Louis area, Solon Gerhman, who went on to lead one of the leading real estate firms in the country. Solon took a tennis lesson three times a week with Butch. But, as Butch states, "I got the real lesson and training and in reality received an MBA from my student." The lesson learned? "It's all about knowing your surroundings and who you are meeting and speaking with." The last time Butch hit a tennis ball was at Centre Court three years ago and Wimbledon, for Butch, is still the greatest arena holding his best-loved memories. He'll be happy if that will be the last tennis ball he hits as he sets out to keep his score on the golf links under his age!
Pam Matthews is a proven industry leader with four decades of experience in the entertainment business. She began her career at age fifteen as a runner for Mid South Concerts in Memphis. Today, she serves the live entertainment industry as Executive Director of one of its most influential trade organizations. Matthews toured as an accountant for KISS and Ozzy Osbourne in the early 80s and was part of the Pace Concerts (now Live Nation) team that designed, constructed, and managed Starwood Amphitheatre in Nashville. In 1988, after three seasons at 18,000+ capacity concert venue, Matthews accepted a marketing/accounting position with The Judds’ in-house booking agency and production company Pro Tours, Inc. In 1991 Pro Tours promoted 110 of the 128 sold-out concerts on The Judds Farewell Tour, which was second to the Grateful Dead as the highest grossing North American tour that year. As Wynonna began her solo career and restructured her business, Matthews joined the management side of the organization and eventually became Vice President & Treasurer of Wynonna, Inc. and J2K, Inc. As an officer of J2K, Inc., Matthews headed the multi-company team that produced The Judds’ sold-out New Year’s Eve 1999 concert and the 2000 reunion tour that followed. In 2000, Gaylord Entertainment selected Pam Matthews to be General Manager of Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium. During her tenure, the Ryman became one of the top-grossing theaters in North America and received its National Historic Landmark status and numerous awards including its first-ever Pollstar Theatre of the Year, Academy of Country Music Venue of the Year, and IEBA Venue of the Year honors. In 2008, Matthews resigned her position at the Ryman to be with her husband, a decorated Special Operations Team Leader in the U.S. Army, while he was stationed at the Presidio of Monterey, California. Matthews and her husband, who is now a legislative attorney with the Tennessee General Assembly, settled back home in Nashville in 2012. Matthews joined IEBA as its Executive Director in 2013. Since then, the 50-year-old organization has tripled its membership and attendance at its annual conference continues to sell-out year after year. In 2017, IEBA established its Educational Outreach Fund, a 501(c)(3) charity that has endowed over $1M in scholarships at universities across the country and awards $75k annually to students seeking a career in the entertainment industry.Matthews attended Christ Church College, Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. In 1989, she passed the Uniform Certified Public Accountant Examination. During her career, Pam Matthews has been featured in numerous publications including Billboard, Pollstar, Better Homes & Gardens, and The Tennessean. In 2006, Billboard magazine ranked Matthews on its first “Women in Music” list. Gerry and Bryan have thoughts on recently announced changes to upcoming Pro Tours and as you might expect, they’re fired up! Listen while they bring you up to speed on the curious case of the disappearing two million dollars, and why it’s completely disingenuous to write off the retroactive changes as a necessary reaction to Covid-19. In the midst of all of this, the guys are still bringing you their picks for the best decks in BO1 and BO3 for upcoming events. We talk to Chubby Chandler and Nathan Homer about the big business questions facing the professional golf tours in Europe and America. It’s a conversation that needs a bit of context, for listeners who haven’t been following what’s been happening in the golf business over the last month or so. First, there’s the obvious theme of how the four major championships and the two big professional tours in Europe and America have responded to the COVID shutdown. There’s been a marked difference in tone and ambition on either side of the Atlantic. The three American based majors went early with new dates in late summer and Autumn, while The R&A has cancelled the 2020 Open Championship entirely. Similarly, Jay Monahan, commissioner of the PGA Tour has been very quick to publish rescheduled event timetables, which seem to many observers to be on the ambitious side, while Keith Pelley head of the European Tour has been far more circumspect, sending out an email to its playing members warning of the profound effect of the shutdown on the golf economy. The story was broken by James Corrigan of the Daily Telegraph who obtained a copy of Pelley’s email and made it public, read James’ story here... Pelley writes:“Our tour has enjoyed a significant period of growth in recent years, in terms of prize funds, playing opportunities and the overall standard of our events, as well as our broadcast product. The impact of the coronavirus has stopped this rapid momentum in its tracks, and it will, in fact, require us to reassess many elements. You should therefore be prepared that when we do resume playing, the schedule and the infrastructure of tournaments could look radically different from what you have been used to. Many of the things you have become accustomed to, such as top-class players’ lounges or courtesy car services will most likely assume a different appearance, if indeed they are present at all. Then it goes on to say "Prize funds will also most likely be different. … The reality is, the pandemic is going to have a profound impact on the tour financially, as well as many of our partners, both in sponsorship and broadcast areas.”Now, running in parallel to this story is the rumours of a breakaway Premier Golf League, funded by the Raine Group and investment from the Saudi sovereign fund. In what seems like a lifetime ago now, Geoff Shackelford the blogger, podcaster and Golf Channel contributor broke the story and followed up with a lengthy Q&A with Andrew Gardiner, one of the key people behind the Premier League. I’ll put a link to Geoff’s piece in the show notes with this podcast, and it’s also worth listening to the recent State of the Game podcast with Geoff, Rod Morri, Michael Clayton and myself, where we go in to great detail on the issues arising from the story. (Geoff’s Q&A with Andrew Gardiner is here ).If I was to reduce the PGL to its bare bones, it takes the best 48 players in the world and puts them in to 12 franchise teams of four golfers competing for a world championship over 18 events through the season. So, a formula one of golf, essentially. So, for this podcast, I wanted the views of two people from inside golf to get their perspective on some of the questions that arise from all this. Chubby Chandler, founder of ISM and Nathan Homer of Now TV/Sky who was until last year the Chief Commercial and Marketing Officer at the European Tour. The first call I made was to Chubby, one of the most influential golf agents in the world, whose clients have included Rory McIlroy, Darren Clarke, Lee Westwood, Ernie Els and the cricketer Andrew Flintoff to name just a few. ISM is also an event promoter on the European Tour, most notably setting up The Turkish Airlines Open in 2013.Then, the second part of the podcast is a conversation with Nathan Homer, who has a comprehensive view of the commercial value of the sport, having been in charge of marketing and sponsorship strategy at the Tour and before that a client, in leadership roles in sports marketing at Barclays and P&G.

Gabe Carleton-Barnes has played in 13 Pro Tours, with 12 day twos. He has 9 PTQ wins and 1 RPTQ top 4. He just got his first Grand Prix Top 8 in Vancouver 2016. His claims to fame in our Magic: The Gathering Community include founding Draft-PDX, hosting Card Talk: The World’s Greatest MTG Podcast, and Storytelling. Gabe lives in Portland, Oregon. Click here: http://bit.ly/mtgprotutor-ep82 First Set Revised Favorite Set Odyssey Favorite Card Psychatog What makes Magic: The Gathering fun for you? Despite taking multiple breaks Gabe has stuck with Magic because he loves games and competition. He feels that playing Magic never gets old because it keeps changing and forces you to continue to learn. Gabe started going to tournaments early in his career and found that he was making friends with adults who treated him as a peer, not as a kid. He now befriends players of all ages and understands that there is always something to be learned from every player he meets. Pro Tour & Grand Prix Experience Gabe made it his goal to qualify for the Pro Tour, so he familiarized himself with the PTQ format. He stayed focused, refined his decks, and was able to regularly get the top spot in PTQs so he could attend the Pro Tour. However, when the Pro Tour came around he struggled to quickly innovate and craft a deck that would work well at the tournament. He didn’t have a lot of help at first, and the time crunch put a lot of pressure on him to familiarize himself with new cards for the format. In terms of GPs, Gabe would attend them intermittently and usually make Day 2, but never quite make it into the Top 8. Changing up his sleeping habits and altering his routine helped him follow through on a good start in order to finally make it to the Top 8 at Grand Prix Vancouver. Heaviest Magic Moment Gabe’s heaviest Magic moment came after he had played about 10 GPs and made Day 2 at all of them. He hit a Limited match at Grand Prix Boston and had a clever plan for how he was going to beat his opponent. With the game pretty much wrapped up, Gabe tried for a play to finish the match, but his opponent had the perfect counter and won on the next turn. After the match a friend of Gabe’s who was less experienced pointed out that Gabe had a card in his hand that would have won the game instantly. This led Gabe to realize that even though he thought he was a really good player, he still made mistakes in how he approached the game. He started to keep an open ear when listening to players of various skill levels so that he could learn from as many players as possible. Proudest Magic Moment While Top 8ing his first Grand Prix is wonderful, the win that stands out to Gabe is making Top 8 at a specific PTQ held by Card Kingdom in Seattle. He made it into the Top 8 without a rare in his deck, and played against Jiachen Tao, who he beat with a subtle side board card choice. He faced off against Brian Wong for the final, and after an epic first match Gabe went on to win the tournament (and a trophy). Draft PDX Gabe founded Draft PDX based on similar groups in New York which were organized by Jon Finkel and other great players. In Portland they’ve formed a group that wants to be competitive, make it to the Pro Tour, and have fun with the game while fostering a healthy community spirit. They travel to events together and look out for one another by buying snacks or coffee for a busy teammate, or even giving them rides home if they miss their flight. Best Format Limited How To Turn Limited From A Weakness To A Strength Diving headfirst into Limited and playing it as much as possible with good players is one of the keys to mastering Limited. When Draft PDX meets they start by drafting the best decks that they can, and then they split into two random teams before they build their decks. They discuss with each other what cards they might use and how to play them before coming together to play the other team. The team that wins the Draft is the team that wins the most matches—this way players get to really learn how their deck performed instead of getting benched after their first loss. With the team setting players are encouraged to play their hardest even after a loss, as their next match matters just as much for the team. Biggest Mistake Players Make One of the biggest mistakes Gabe sees players make is when they let their emotions determine the value of their play. He knows that not blaming losses on luck and variance is great advice, but what he finds more valuable is looking back at matches he won to find the mistakes he made. If you only set out to learn from losses then you are missing out on a lot of opportunities to learn, especially since most wins aren’t achieved in the most optimal fashion. To internalize mistakes you’ve made, realize that you most likely will make the same mistake again. What you can do to prevent that is to care about making the mistake, actively seek to recognize it, and find what mode of thinking led you to that mistake. What Is The Deepest Thing Magic Has Taught You? While Gabe sees himself as a competitive, achievement focused individual, Magic has taught him that he is more of a community focused player. His personal goals are important to him, but they aren’t as important as being good to people and his interactions with a healthy, thriving community of players. What's in Your Tournament Bag Dark Chocolate (for himself and distressed teammates) Deck Box Pens Paper Dice Non-Magic Activities That Make You Better At Magic Gabe plays basketball and finds that aerobic activity measurably affects his mental state and thought processes. Maintaining his physical health helps him from getting exhausted in long tournaments, and he finds that when he feels good he usually plays better. The brain is connected to the body and keeping both in shape is important to performing well in anything. Final Wisdom Gabe’s final advice is to make sure you’re always trying to learn. Magic has taught him that he doesn’t know everything, and it has helped him connect and learn from many different people and situations. Never think you have it all figured out. When you win a big tournament use it as an opportunity to say, “This is a big milestone for me and I have a lot more left to learn.” Magic Resource Card Talk: The World's Greatest Magic: The Gathering Podcast Gabe Carleton-Barnes at Back Fence PDX MTGGOLDFISH Decision Fatigue (New York Times) Decision Fatigue (James Clear) Connect With Gabe Carleton-Barnes Twitter: @uncle_gcb Like What You Hear? Click here: http://bit.ly/mtgprotutor-ep78 First Set Revised Favorite Set Revised Favorite Card Jace, the Mind Sculptor What makes Magic: The Gathering fun for you? Martin finds Magic to be a good way to relax while also exercising his competitive urges, but like most long time players, he still had to take a break from the game. He wasn’t getting to where he wanted to be with the game, but after a while he started working at a game store. Working in an environment surrounded by Magic had him Drafting twice a week and rekindled his desire to enter tournament Magic again. Early Challenge The biggest enemy Martin faced in his early days of Magic was himself. At tournaments he would be nervous in every match he played, as his opponents appeared to be better, older, or just different. This led him to play the game by their principles instead of his own, and he felt as though he was just losing to himself in these matches. In order to become comfortable playing Magic, Martin continued to play more and against different people and eventually eased into the competitive scene. He found that playing more helped him meet more friends, and that if he stuck to playing by his own principles things went pretty well for him in matches. Level Up Moment Martin’s biggest period of growth came when he started working at his local game store. Before that he was playing Magic less frequently, but after working at the game store he was playing almost every day. He believes the key to getting better is playing as much as you can against as many different types of people as you can. Playing more pushed him into formats he wasn’t comfortable playing, and that helped him become a well-rounded player. Proudest Magic Moment Martin cites winning the Pro Tour as his proudest moment in competitive Magic. It was his first Pro Tour in over 5 years, so he didn’t have high expectations for his performance. After winning it took months for him to fully grasp the reality of winning the tournament. He started to receive a large amount of recognition from the community and other players. This acted as a confidence boost that has helped him power through other tournaments as well. His Pro Tour win helped establish team Eureka, as before they were just a bunch of loosely affiliated guys who tested for that one event. Now they get together and test for all of the Pro Tours. Heaviest Magic Moment After winning Nationals in 2010 he got to go to the World Championships, but didn’t do as well as he liked. He placed in the 40’s, and felt that he had made a lot of errors in his matches. This led Martin into a down period where he felt as though he couldn’t focus on the game enough, so he distanced himself from tournament play for a while. After reflecting he started to see that he hadn’t prepared adequately for the tournament. This has pushed him to prepare more going forward, and has helped him form a team which was something he didn’t have before. Best Format Limited What Would You Tell Someone New To Drafting? Martin has noticed that players will show up to their first Draft not understanding anything about the format. Even if you’ve played a lot of formats, you can’t expect to sit down for a Draft and end up doing well. Learning the cards and their synergies is one of the first steps to understanding the format. You want to go into the draft with a plan, ideally three strategies that you can be flexible with. Try and stay open minded, and look at spoilers to see what certain colors and cards actually do. After the match ask the other players what went wrong with your deck and why it didn’t work like you had hoped. Biggest Mistake Players Make Players can often be too settled in the way they play Magic, and this is an attribute that Martin thinks gets a lot of players stuck early on. They will come to the game store for the first time, not having played much, and are thrown off by other’s play styles and the faster tempo of play. Having a mindset that lets you absorb these new experiences will help you adapt to game store play, and eventually tournament Magic. Deepest Thing Magic Has Taught You Martin really loves to win in Magic, but he doesn’t take losses so heavily anymore. Losses used to haunt him for days, if not months afterwards. While he still thinks about his losses now, it’s in terms of what could he have done better instead of beating himself up over them. How to Effectively Prepare for a Big Event Training for Grand Prix’s differs from event to event, but he doesn’t practice so much for the Limited portions, as he has a good grasp of the format and plays a lot at his store. Pro Tours are different. Team Eureka will set up a forum and Facebook group 3 months ahead of the Pro Tour, and anytime one of them has an idea of something to test they will post it there. They basically prepare for the full gap between Pro Tours. Two weeks in advance of the tournament they meet up and grind out games all day long. The preparation is grueling; they pair decks against one another and will play ten games pre sideboard, and then twenty games post sideboard. They will discuss the games, add new sideboard cards, tweak decks, and start all over again. They hold daily meetings where they discuss the matchups, what cards were good, but they also talk about how they felt about their decks, not just the results. What's in Your Tournament Bag Pen Paper Deck Snacks Water Dragon Shield Sleeves Final Wisdom Martin wants to emphasize that there are no shortcuts in Magic. You have to practice a lot if you want to improve, so get out into the world and play, and don’t be afraid to seek advice from everyone else out there. He saw how the old system made players hostile when they sat across from one another at competitions, dreading losing the match and losing points. Making the shift to a system where playing Magic was good, and winning at Magic was better, was Mike’s goal in fostering a healthier competitive scene. He wanted the community to be more inclusive, less hostile, all while recognizing the achievements of players who strived to be the best. At the end of a match Mike wants you to shake your opponent’s hand and say good game, not run off deducting points from your score. Heaviest Magic Moment Losing in the Top 8 of the World Championships in Toronto stands out as a sore moment in Mike’s career. At the time there was no Hall of Fame and taking the crown at the World Championship had been his dream since his early days playing. Unfortunately, Mike got out played and out sideboarded, and ended up walking away from the match feeling like he could have done much more. While it remains a high point to even make the Top 8 at Worlds, he still feels as though he lost an opportunity he can’t get back. Being even keeled is a character trait has helped Mike appreciate the loss and push him to practice more. Level Up Moment For Mike, getting a car led to a long period of growth in Magic. Being able to travel and extend his Magic intake beyond local tournaments helped open up the world for Mike. He made an 8 hour drive to a New York Pro Tour and got to play against, and defeat, Mike Long in a side event. This confidence booster helped Mike take steps to push himself further into Magic’s competitive realms. Proudest Magic Moment Mike points to winning his first team Pro Tour as one of his most memorable moments playing Magic. Playing as part of a team made for a communal experience that helped Mike feel as though he was part of something greater than just his one-on-one matches, even though he wasn’t the hero that outright clinched the win for his team. Mike had a conversation with Jon Finkel on the topic of teammates, and what Finkel said is that it’s hard to see your true self when looking in the mirror. What great friends and teammates do is help you look and see who you are. Best Format Draft Tips For New Draft Players Mike’s tip to new Drafters is establish your colors clearly. He doesn’t like to focus so much on reading other player’s signals, but rather approach it from an angle of “What am I going to accomplish in this draft that will give me flexibility and a line of play towards winning?” He has noticed many new players don’t understand their play style well enough to bring it into their drafts. Getting consciously comfortable with your style is a great area to focus on, as it’s a tough concept to grasp since it isn’t something totally tangible. Biggest Mistake Players Make Mike has noticed that some players simply don’t play enough magic. If you want to succeed and get better, you really have to put in the time to do extra drafts and put in your reps. Players actively striving to rise to the top tier of Magic players often put in 35 to 40 hours a week. While that’s clearly not an option for many players, what you can do is actively incorporate Magic into your life more fully. Go play Magic, and afterwards go somewhere and hang out while talking about your matches. Think about the game in your day to day life until you get to the point Mike was at when he was muttering “Ancestral Recall” in his sleep. Deepest Thing Magic Has Taught You One of the things Mike learned about himself through Magic was that he cares deeply about winning. He doesn’t outwardly express his craving for victory like some other players; his demeanor conceals that desire. Mike generally views himself as laid back and easy going, but Magic has shown him that version of himself only applies in some scenarios. When he becomes engrossed in a competition he can focus on winning 100%. Reader Question: How Do You Tell When A Card Is Good Or Bad? A big area of focus for Mike is understanding the casting cost to power ratio. Look at the cards and see what their drawbacks are, and even more importantly, see how or if those drawbacks can be turned into an advantage. Removal spells are always going to be excellent in Limited. One of the most important lessons Mike has learned is not to get trapped holding onto an awesome card when your opponent plays a bad or low level card, especially early on. Having the mindset that you don’t want to drop an amazing card on something weak can come back to destroy you later on in the match. Final Wisdom Mike believes the key to getting better on your Magic journey is to make sure you are having fun every step of the way. Magic is a game, after all. It’s supposed to be fun. Enjoying the game is the only way you are going to be able to play over and over again in the years to come and stay engaged with the game. There are thousands of other players pouring their whole lives and hearts into the game, so don’t go approaching Magic halfheartedly and expect to rise. Gabriel Nassif has a long and storied history with Magic: The Gathering. His accomplishments include 6 Grand Prix Top 8s, one of which was a win in 2009, and 9 Pro Tour Top 8s! Three (3) of those were 2nd place finishes and 2 of them were 1st place finishes! His first championship was in 2005 at Pro Tour Atlanta and the second was in 2009 at Pro Tour Kyoto. He also has 3 Worlds Top 8s for good measure. Gabriel has been recognized as one of Magic’s greatest players and was inducted into the Magic: The Gathering Hall of Fame in 2010. Gabriel lives in Paris, France with his wife. Click to Tweet: I got a ton of value from Gabriel Nassif when he shared his story on #MTGProTutor today! Click here: http://bit.ly/mtgprotutor-ep75 First Set Ice Age Favorite Set Tempest Favorite Card Crystalline Sliver What makes Magic: The Gathering fun for you? In his years playing Magic, Gabriel made a good many friends which helped keep him in the game. His ability to compete at a very high level, and Magic’s ability to stay interesting and fresh from year to year are also reasons why Gabriel has stuck around for so long. While he has continually competed in Pro Tours, he finds that renting a house before the tournament and training with his friends is almost more fun than the Pro Tour itself. Early Challenge In his early days of playing Magic Gabriel found himself not valuing cards correctly. Like many players, he would trade cards based on what seemed cooler as opposed to their tactical value. It took hours of playing the game and thinking about Magic while scribbling deck lists in his notebook at school for him to hone his evaluating skills. Gabriel also acknowledges getting into the game at a young age helped develop his Magic intuition, as he was able to fully immerse himself in the game and absorb all of its facets. Level Up Moment Gabriel’s level up moment came when he first started playing Magic, as there was the most room for improvement then. He finds that once you get closer to the top it’s much harder to keep ascending. When he was growing up he frequently played at his local store and was lucky to learn from the many excellent players that lived in Paris. This was back when deck lists weren’t on the internet or shared in many magazines, and Paris Magic players were notorious for being brutally good at the game. They often joke that if Magic Online hadn’t come about Parisian players would have dominated the world. Proudest Magic Moment Gabriel has had an amazing Magic career and can cite a dozen great moments that stand out to him. In his early days of Playing Magic he managed to win a Black Lotus at his local shop in Paris. At his first Grand Prix in London he made it to Day 2, and was convinced his opponent who flew in from the United States, Brock Parker, was a big cheater. Gabriel end up crushing him in their matches and realized Brock was just another player who loved the game just like he did. Heaviest Magic Moment Losing to luck or variance doesn’t bother Gabriel much, it’s the losses he takes due to his own mistakes that get to him. He notes that back in the day he was an excellent deck builder, but made a lot of sloppy mistakes in play which took him a long time to mentally recover from. Magic was his entire life, and losing a Pro Tour left a wound that took him almost an entire year to heal. When he was getting really good at the game he didn’t realize he’d become a little arrogant and wasn’t treating his friends well. He even threw his deck through the air after losing a feature match at a Pro Tour. It took one of his friends calling him out on his behavior for him to reel himself back in. On Cheating While cheating isn’t nearly as rampant as it was years ago it can still rear its ugly head from time to time. Gabriel says if something happens to you in a match, even if it just looks like sloppy play or an accident, you should always get a judge involved so a record can be made. Someone may have accidentally flipped your card over while shuffling your deck, or they may have made it look like an accident but actually have a record of doing it. Biggest Mistake Players Make Gabriel thinks one of the hallmark mistakes new players make is blaming their losses on luck. Be honest with yourself and take the time to analyze your deck in a meaningful way. He finds that when players first start building decks they are prone to not playing enough lands. Building your deck and playing it is how a player determines what needs to be adjusted, and looking at deck lists similar to your deck will help fine tune how many lands should be included. Listener Question: Do You Think There's A Herd Mentality When It Comes To Deck Building? Following deck trends is a phenomenon that Gabriel concedes very well might be affecting the Magic community at large. He misses his early days of playing Magic, as there weren’t deck lists online to influence players. Showing up to a tournament with a carefully brewed deck could give a player an amazing edge. Gabriel sees how a herd mentality affects how players prepare for events like the Pro Tour, as everyone now looks to see what decks are placing well in tournaments. This can be detrimental and hinder deck creativity. Gabriel notes that the Eldrazi decks he saw while playing Magic Online influenced his deck in a negative way, as they weren’t representative of what he faced in the last Pro Tour. If he had more of a clean slate Gabriel thinks he may have crafted something much more effective. Final Wisdom Gabriel’s advice is simple: try to play with people that are better than you, work on making friends in the Magic community, and love the game until you can talk about it for hours on end, just like him. Favorite Card Bitterblossom When Brian started to get competitive Bitterblossom played to his creative sensibilities. What makes Magic: The Gathering fun for you? The first thing for Brian is the competitive aspect. Big tournaments, Star City opens, Grand Prixs and the possibility of hitting a Pro Tour—basically the challenge of playing amongst the best. The second thing is the ability to be creative in deck building. This creativity and competitiveness make Magic Brian’s favorite game. Early Challenge Brian admits he was terrible at Limited when he started. It took watching better players for him to realize he was behind and needed to up his game. Local Magic Scene: Atlanta A lot of big stores in Atlanta have fostered play for about 20 solid players, but they’re scattered around the area. Brian finds smaller groups playing at local stores on the weekends. Level Up Moment Most of Brian’s growth happened when he first started playing. He played around people that were way out of his league, but being able to team draft with them gave him invaluable feedback. Brain thinks limited is the key to becoming a better Magic player, as the skills needed translate over to different formats. Heaviest Magic Moment In his first Grand Prix Brian made it to the second day but went 0-4 and lost against weaker players. This loss helped him realize his skill level and pushed him back to the drawing board. Brian analyzed the winning player’s strategy at the same Grand Prix to figure out what he was doing wrong. Proudest Magic Moment Brian doesn’t have a specific, glorified moment that sticks out to him. What comes to mind for him is was placing second after his first time hitting the top eight at a Grand Prix. While bittersweet, he still is proud of how all his hard work and confidence materialize into a 2nd place finish. What does a typical week of MTG look like for you? Being a full time student and playing Hearthstone cuts into his Magic play, but Brian still tends to play one Magic Online draft a day. His playing incentives are driven by how fun the format is and what he gets if he wins. What is the deepest thing you’ve learned about yourself from playing Magic? Brian had a tendency to be impulsive and get caught up in the moment. Having a friend point out how he unnecessarily went all out early in a match helped him slow down. Favorite Format Limited How to choose a deck to play at a Standard Event If you want to have a good time with a descent finish, playing with a stock list with one of the better decks is the way to go. If you want to take down the whole tournament you have to do something that sets you apart—something like a tweaked deck or extra tech, and figuring that out comes from exposing yourself to different deck archetypes. Brian likes to do this to discover ways to exploit certain decks’ weaknesses. Biggest Mistake Players Make “When you play Magic it’s a bloodbath…take every small edge you can.” Brian can confidentially say that giving away tells during a match is something newer players don’t take into consideration. Looking frustrated and throwing your hands up in the air is a surefire way to throw away a game. Make it hard for your opponent to know what you have in your hand, and better yet, use your tells to mislead them. Sealed & Draft Tips Sealed: Brian believes the key in Sealed is to focus on the long game, play greedy, don’t focus too much on synergy, and make sure every card in your deck is a good standalone. Don’t ignore the early game, but understand what your deck wants to do. How to Effectively Prepare for a Big Event Putting too much emphasis on results can ramp up nerves, but going in with an experimental mindset to learn can make the experience a lot more fun. Talking with friends and getting feedback from a small group is invaluable when it comes to theory crafting and polishing your deck. Online forums are a great source too if you are a local player and don’t have any in-town connections. What’s in Your Tournament Bag? Brian likes to travel light to conserve energy during a long tournament day: Deck Notebook Pen Dice Water bottle Snacks Nuts and Bolts of a Playtest Brian thinks that playtesting can be hindered by trying to jam as many games into one session as possible. Fast games can feel inorganic as it’s not comparable to how you will play outside the test. Going through deck lists with a group of friends and theory crafting while arguing back and forth about what should and shouldn’t be in the deck helps get to the root of your deck. Magic Resource Star City Games Decklists Grand Prix Top 8 Decklists How Can a New Magic Player Break In? Magic is about creativity and flexibility, and when you build a Cube out of commons you can start a lot of discussion about deck building and have fun playing whatever version of Magic you can. Put yourself to the test and develop your skills. Final Wisdom If you’re a new player aiming for the competitive sphere it’s easy to get wrapped up in playtesting and not getting results. So whatever you do make sure you have fun with it, and remember, there’s no shame in taking a break if the fun fades. Connect With Brian Eason Twitter: @bloodyfaceHS Like What You Hear? The competitive aspect and friends you make along the way. Early Challenge Limited is Chester's weak point. Talking to those who are better has been Chester's best way to improve. Other than jamming a bunch of Limited games. Level Up Moment Shifting to Magic Online and primarily playing there. This lead to his first PTQ win in 2011. Proudest Magic Moment Making Top 8 at Grand Prix Sydney 2015. Best Format Constructed. Chester likes seeing your win rate go up as you practice with a certain deck (in Modern or Standard). When you're first learning a format, pick a deck and stick with it. After you have a feel for the format you can switch decks. How to Choose a Standard Deck Knowing your own play style is key to picking a deck. By playing Magic with different decks and against different decks you will learn what you like. Build the popular version of that deck and then tweak it as you continue playing. Biggest Mistake Players Make Keeping really loose keeps is a big mistake players are making. Especially with the new mulligan rule players should be keeping a lot fewer hands than they are. You have to be familiar with your deck and the match up to make the optimal keep or mulligan decision. Don't show up unprepared. Take snacks and water and get sleep. Card Evaluation Tips Compare new cards to similar cards in older formats, then consider how good that card was in the old format and use it as a baseline for how good the new card is. Sealed & Draft Tips Sealed: Sort cards by color and then take out the unplayables. Next see which colors are playable by identifying if your pool can support a certain archetype. In Battle for Zendikar you want a fast or bomb-centric deck. Removal is key in any Limited format. Drafting: Look at content online before you dive in to a format. By having an idea of what the archetypes in a format are ahead of time you'll be better prepared to draft than if you just showed up and sat down. Read articles and watch videos. How to Effectively Play Test Drafting two or three times a day is how Chester prepares for a Limited Grand Prix. Then he will talk about his decisions with others. For a Constructed Grand Prix he will get in reps with his deck so he can identify lines of play and become more familiar with his deck. Shi Tian love that there are lots of interaction and synergy between cards and that the games is refreshed every time a set comes out. He also enjoys the people reading part of Magic too. Looking for tells when playing against an opponent is fun for him. Early Challenge Being a Professional gamer is not highly regarded in Hong Kong so Shi Tian was constantly asked "When are you going to get a real job?" from those around him. Until he made Platinum it was a constant challenge standing up to the pressures. Level Up Moment After Shi Tian's first Pro Tour Top 8 Wizards unbanned Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle which allowed Shi Tian to play the Scapeshift deck. Shi Tian also joined with Taiwanese player Kuo Tzu-Ching, who was on the winning team of first ever World Magic Cup, to form the team MTG Mint Card. This period of his career was full of growth and level ups for him. Proudest Magic Moment Top 8 at Pro Tour Honolulu. The Pro Tour was during a tumultuous time for Hong Kong and Lee Shi Tian was proud to bring attention to the issues his countrymen were facing. Best Format Draft & Modern How to Choose a Standard Deck Players at Grand Prix are much more diverse so Shi Tian plays the safest deck. The one with the best results. For Pro Tours he tries to surprise the field because the format is relatively undiscovered by that point. Biggest Mistake Players Make Limited: You should know your game plan and always track the game tempo. Know your role for the match up. Are you the aggro player or the player with inevitability? Card Evaluation Tips Review the spoiler several times and identify supported archetypes. Sealed & Draft Tips Evasion is Shi Tian's secret. Get lots of cards with flying. Draft: Remember the 3 best cards in the pack. Do that with every pack to get a feel of what color people are in. To "read the draft" you should identify the best commons in each color. You see commons more and it's easier to pick up on what is open if you track the commons. Always draft a good curve. Team Building Teams are great because when you're going solo you don't have time to play every deck. Team mates help round out your knowledge. How to Effectively Play Test Know your meta game. What's going on locally and how can you beat it. As you scale up change your side board accordingly. Improvement Suggestions Watch videos online to pick up on the latest strategies. Read articles. MTG Pro Tutor - Insights, Tips & Advice from Magic: The Gathering Pros
Andrea Mengucci is a cultured Italian man who has made it to the Top 16 in one Grand Prix as well as the Top 16 and Top 8 in two Pro Tours. We will definitely see more of him in the years to come. Click to Tweet: I learned how to mulligan from Andrea Mengucci when he shared his story on MTG Pro Tutor today! Click here: http://bit.ly/mtgprotutor-ep35 First Set Champions of Kamigawa Favorite Set Innistrad Favorite Card Bloodbraid Elf What makes Magic: The Gathering fun for you? You always have changing formats. From tournament to tournament the decks change drastically even though the cards in the set are the same. Early Challenge Keeping bad hands was Andrea's early challenge. Just because you have a good spell, if you have one land you can't keep the hand. Learn how to mulligan to overcome this. In Limited your hand is the main concern in whether you mulligan or not. In Constructed, the match up is the main factor in your mulligan decision. Level Up Moment Finding someone who was at the next level and playing with him constantly helped Andrea improve. He also watched tons of videos and learned from the pros and won a PTQ because of it. Proudest Magic Moment Making it to the Top 8 of Pro Tour Atlanta. Andrea took control of the situation and asked Mike Sigrist if he could room with and practice with him for the Pro Tour. This friendship has helped Andrea grow. Best Format Standard. The best results go to the player who practices the most. Follow the decks every week to stay ahead of what's going on. How to Choose a Standard Deck Look at the decks that performed well recently and brainstorm their weaknesses. Consider what deck is best positioned to exploit those weekends. Biggest Mistake Players Make Not knowing when to mulligan. Showing up with the wrong deck. Watch your opponent. Do they think a lot during combat? That could mean a combat trick. Likewise, even if you don't have a trick you should take a few seconds before passing priority so your opponent thinks you have a trick. Card Evaluation Tips First, lay out your decks and identify which cards can be strictly replaced by new cards. (This applies to all formats; Standard, Modern etc...) Then identify powerful cards in the new set that are build arounds and build every Standard deck around that card that you can. Sealed & Draft Tips Pre-release: At a pre-release play your rares, even if they aren't that amazing, so you can try them out and see what they do. The pre-release is not a big tournament that Andrea says "I need to win". He just wants to test new cards. Draft: Don't pass a great card just because there are other good cards in that color. In fact, if you do that and that color doesn't come back that means that you know how many other players at the table are in that color. Take the best card regardless of color but lean more towards the color of your first pick. How to Effectively Play Test Know your opponent's deck list and play around what they have. Track deck lists and identify the cards that always appear in a certain archetype and know them cold. Playing with people in real life is better than playing online. When possible, go to your local game store and draft with real people. Improvement Suggestions When you're first getting in, pick a deck and stick with it. As new sets come out just get the pieces you need in your colors.
