In the wake of two Seinfeld shows disturbed by protestors, the Two Jacks take a look at the role of comedy in our society. The first point to make is a comedian with more than 50 years experience like Seinfeld, standing with a mic in his hand among a mainly adoring audience is going to sit any hecklers on their arses in quick time. The discussion enters into the best stand up comedians of all time. JTI claims Richard Pryor changed everything and is the guv'nor while arguing that Billy Connolly was the funniest man at a live venue. We then look at political language and what a politician means when they utter predictable messages. In more serious matters, Immigration Minister Andrew Giles' woes and bad judgment continue. The Reform Party moves past the Tories as the new opposition in the UK on polling at least. In sport, Dustin Martin stands atop as a champion of the big moment in AFL, Australia moves into the final eight in the T-20 World Cup while the Euros get underway.

NCAAFB – Freeman guides No. 18 Notre Dame back from 0-2 start Marcus Freeman’s started his first full season as Notre Dame coach with a stumble and a fall. Losing at No. 2 Ohio State was understandable. Losing the home opener to Marshall and sliding from preseason No. 5 to out of the rankings was not. And losing starting quarterback Tyler Buchner with a season-ending shoulder injury in Week 2 only made matters worse. The Fighting Irish responded to the precarious moment by winning seven of their next eight games — all with a new quarterback, Drew Pyne. And now the Irish are back in the national conversation again. NCAAFB – Virginia cancels game vs. Coastal Carolina after shooting Virginia has canceled its home football game against No. 23 Coastal Carolina scheduled for Saturday following a shooting on campus that left three players dead and another wounded. The win streak for the Blues comes in the wake of an ugly eight-game slide, when they were outscored 38-12. Andreas Athanasiou scored twice for Chicago, and Arvid Soderblom made 30 stops. The Blackhawks lost for the fourth time in five games. Tonight Detroit Red Wings at San Jose Sharks, 10:30 p.m. NHL – Hossa interested in more active role with Chicago Blackhawks Marian Hossa isn’t exactly sure how he will feel when the Chicago Blackhawks retire his No. 81 jersey. The Hockey Hall of Famer is certain he is going to watch some more numbers from his championship teams in Chicago go up to the United Center rafters some day. The 43-year-old Hossa gets his moment before Sunday’s game against Pittsburgh, another one of his five teams during his 19 NHL seasons. He becomes the eighth player to have his number retired by Chicago, joining an impressive list that also includes Stan Mikita, Bobby Hull and Tony Esposito. The Bulldogs’ Southeastern Conference rivals Tennessee and LSU are at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively. With three of the top six teams and only three weeks left until Selection Sunday, the SEC appears in position to put two teams in the CFP for the second straight season and third time overall. USC, the Pac-12′s best and probably last hope to make the final four, is seventh. NCAAFB – Charlotte hires Michigan’s Poggi as head football coach The Charlotte 49ers have named Michigan associate head coach Francis “Biff” Poggi as their head football coach. Poggi replaces Will Healy, who was fired earlier this season. Pete Rossomando has been serving as the interim coach and will finish out this season. Poggi inherits a team that has struggled in 2022. He is Charlotte’s third head football coach since the school’s FBS football program started in 2015. NCAAFB – USC, UCLA may cause Big Ten schools to expand recruiting map Southern California and UCLA’s pending arrivals to the Big Ten theoretically should give the league’s existing members the opportunity to expand their recruiting maps and pursue more West Coast prospects. But it apparently will take some time for these moves to have that kind of impact. Twelve high school juniors or seniors from states with Pac-12 programs have verbally committed to play football at one of the Big Ten’s 14 current member schools. Only four made their decisions after the Big Ten’s June 30 announcement that USC and UCLA would join the league in 2024. Zegras and Strome executed a back-and-forth passing game that ended with Strome’s fifth goal of the season. Tonight St. Louis Blues at Chicago Blackhawks, 7:30 p.m. MLB – Veteran skippers Francona, Showalter voted Managers of Year Terry Francona of the Cleveland Guardians and Buck Showalter of the New York Mets have been voted Managers of the Year, improving the already sparkling resumes of both veteran baseball leaders. Showalter narrowly won the National League award in a wide-open race, becoming the third person to take the prize four times and the first to do it with four different franchises. He won in the American League with the New York Yankees in 1994, Texas Rangers in 2004 and Baltimore Orioles in 2014. The other four-time winners are Hall of Famers Bobby Cox and Tony La Russa. Rizzo had opted out of his previous contract with New York, giving up a $16 million salary for 2023. Since joining the Yankees at the 2021 trade deadline, Rizzo had provided needed left-handed power for New York. NFL – Bears place RB Herbert on IR because of hip injury The Chicago Bears have placed running back Khalil Herbert on injured reserve because of a hip injury, a big setback for a team leading the NFL in rushing yards. Twelve high school juniors or seniors from states with Pac-12 programs have verbally committed to play football at one of the Big Ten’s 14 current member schools. Only four made their decisions after the Big Ten’s June 30 announcement that USC and UCLA would join the league in 2024. NCAAFB – University of Virginia mourns for campus shooting victims The University of Virginia community is mourning as new details emerge about both the three football players killed in a campus shooting this week and the criminal charges the suspect faces. Authorities have said university student Christopher Darnell Jones Jr. joined a group of about two dozen others who traveled by bus Sunday to Washington for a field trip. After the bus arrived back on campus, authorities say Jones opened fire, killing the three players and wounding two others. Jones was scheduled to make a first court appearance Wednesday. NHL – National Hockey League Last Night Anaheim Ducks 3, Detroit Red Wings 2 – OT Ducks 3, Red Wings 2 – OT – Ducks beat Wings, snap 3-game skid on Strome’s OT goal Ryan Strome scored on a pass from Trevor Zegras with 49 seconds left in overtime and the Anaheim Ducks snapped a three-game losing streak with a 3-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings. After John Klingberg scored his first goal for his new team with 46 seconds left in regulation to force overtime, the Ducks earned only their fifth win of the season when a clearing attempt by Detroit’s Tyler Bertuzzi hit Strome in front of the net. Baltimore’s Brandon Hyde finished second to Francona in the American League, while Dave Roberts of the Los Angeles Dodgers was runner-up in the NL. MLB – Rizzo, Yankees agree to $40M, 2-year contract First baseman Anthony Rizzo is staying with the New York Yankees, agreeing to a $40 million, two-year contract. Rizzo gets $17 million in each of the next two seasons, and the deal includes a $17 million team option for 2025 with a $6 million buyout. Herbert will miss at least four games. He was hurt returning a kickoff near the end of last week’s 31-30 loss to the Detroit Lions. Herbert is the team’s second-leading rusher behind quarterback Justin Fields. He has 643 yards on 108 attempts while sharing duties with David Montgomery. Golf – LIV/PGA – McIlroy says Norman needs to ‘exit stage left’ from LIV Golf Rory McIlroy says golf cannot begin to come together as long as Greg Norman is running Saudi-funded LIV Golf. McIlroy says no one is going to talk unless there’s an adult in the room and that Norman needs to go. McIlroy is in Dubai for the DP World Tour Championship that ends the European tour season. McIlroy says it will be difficult to get anywhere until lawsuits in the U.S. and the U.K. are sorted out. He also takes issue with Norman saying Tiger Woods should be thankful for LIV forcing the tour to provide more money to plays. Olympics – Summer 2024 – 2020 Olympic champ Sunisa Lee to make a run at Paris 2024 Sunisa Lee is going to make another run at Olympic glory. The 2020 women’s all-around gymnastics champion has announced she will return to training at the elite level following the end of her sophomore season at Auburn. Lee became the fifth straight American to win Olympic gold when she edged Rebeca Andrade of Brazil in the finals at the 2020 games in Tokyo. Lee still fulfilled her commitment to compete at Auburn, helping the Tigers to the NCAA finals last spring. Lee says she doesn’t want her gold-medal moment in Japan to be a once-in-a-lifetime thing. The Washington Commanders turned methodical drives into scores and took advantage of turnover-prone Philadelphia to stun the Eagles 32-21 on Monday night and send them to their first loss in nine games this season. Behind Jalen Hurts, the Eagles were 8-0 for the first time in franchise history and the last team in the NFL that could make a run at Miami’s 17-0 mark in 1972 and the lone perfect season. The 2007 New England Patriots came close, going 18-0 before a Super Bowl loss. The Commanders also spoiled Pittsburgh’s 11-0 start in 2020. Hurts threw for just 174 yards. NCAAFB – Suspect caught in fatal shooting of 3 UVA FB players Authorities said a University of Virginia student and former member of the school’s football team fatally shot three current players as they returned from a field trip. The shooting set off panic and a 12-hour lockdown of the campus until the suspect was captured Monday. Students who were told to shelter in place beginning late Sunday described terrifying hours in hiding. While police searched for the gunman through the night, students sought safety in closets, dorm rooms, libraries and apartments. They listened to police scanners and tried to remember everything they were taught as children during active-shooter drills. The suspect was identified as 22-year-old Christopher Darnell Jones Jr. NCAAFB – Coach: Slain Virginia football players ‘were all good kids’ Three University of Virginia football players killed in an on-campus shooting are being remembered by head football coach Tony Elliott as “incredible young men with huge aspirations and extremely bright futures.” Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr., and D’Sean Perry were returning from a class trip Sunday night when authorities say they were killed by a fellow student. The young men were athletes who’d been journeying through varying periods of transition in their college football careers. One was bouncing back from a season-ending injury. Another had changed positions on the team. And yet another had recently transferred in from the University of Wisconsin. CAS has registered an appeal from the World Anti-Doping Agency and says WADA is seeking a four-year ban to start on the date CAS makes its ruling. That would cover the next Olympics in Italy. NFL – National Football League – Week 10 Yesterday Washington Commanders 32, Philadelphia Eagles 21 Commanders 32, Eagles 21 – Commanders end sloppy Eagles’ perfect season 32-21 The Eagles’ bid for an undefeated season is over. Third-ranked Houston and fourth-ranked Kentucky picked up the remaining first-place votes in Top 25 with only slight changes from the preseason rankings. Baylor, Kansas, Duke, UCLA, Arkansas and Creighton round out the top 10. Tennessee fell 11 spots while Villanova fell out for the first time since February 2019. No. 24 Texas A&M and No. 25 Connecticut are the new additions. NCAAWBKB – Women’s College Basketball Tonight Oakland at Michigan State, 7:00 p.m. NCAAWBKB – No. 1 South Carolina, No. 2 Stanford showdown set South Carolina remains the unanimous choice at No. 1 in The Associated Press women’s basketball poll. The Gamecocks will face second-ranked Stanford on Sunday in the 63rd meeting between the top two teams in the poll. Texas, Iowa and UConn round out the first five. Ohio State moved up six spots to eighth after beating then-No. 5 Tennessee last week. The Lady Vols fell to 11th. Villanova and Utah entered the rankings at No. 24 and 25, replacing Princeton and South Dakota State. First up on the show, David Glanz from Refugee Action Collective (Vic) joins Marisa to discuss the new Albanese Government's approach to refugees and asylum seekers during its first 10 weeks in Parliament. He analyses their tendency to celebrate few high-profile positive announcements (such as permanent residency for the Nadesalingam 'Biloela' family) while downplaying cruel business-as-usual policies in the background, attributing lack of systemic change or plans to Labor's fear of being seen as 'soft' on immigration. He talks about Immigration Minister Andrew Giles, differences with the LNP, and RAC-Vic's recent press release, welcoming the spirit of the Ending Indefinite and Arbitrary Immigration Detention Bill 2022, introduced into parliament this week by independent MP Andrew Wilkie. David's take-home message is "Let's celebrate our victories - like the Home to Biloela family - but remember there are thousands of people who haven't won yet, and we need to keep campaigning and we need to keep on the street." For more information on their next Rally & Open Mic for Permanent Visas, at 2 Lonsdale St on Wednesday 24th August, you can check out the Facebook event, or call Lucy on 0404 728 104. RAC Vic also have weekly meetings every Monday 6pm at Kathleen Syme Library in Carlton (all welcome). Check their Facebook page for more details and options for online attendance. Later, Marisa invites Andreea Lachsz, Head of Policy, Communications & Strategy at the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service (VALS), to give us an in-depth look at the Ombudsman's report on investigations into the use of force at the Metropolitan Remand Centre and the Melbourne Assessment Prison. She notes the Ombudsman's reporting of "concerning behaviour or poor decisionmaking" by officers in all 8 incidents in his report, and discusses increasing prison and remand populations in Victoria, particularly of Aboriginal women and children. Andreea also draws links with the 2021 IBAC report on corruption and abuse in the prison system and how both of these reports look at difficulties in surveillance such as failures to utilise body cameras, and expands on why reform is necessary in the area of police and prison staff surveillance from a legal aid perspective.  We encourage listeners to read and sign the VALS petition to fix Victoria's broken bail laws here.
