Long Term Thinking for Business Success
Navigating Challenges and Cultivating Trust: Insights from Paul Wehbe, Infrastructure Engineering Group

Long Term Thinking for Business Success

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 4, 2024 40:43

In this Long Term Thinking for Business Success episode, I sit down with Paul Wehbe, Managing Director of Infrastructure Engineering Group (IEG). With over 20 years of experience in the electrical infrastructure industry, Paul walks us through his transition from a corporate role at Ausgrid to starting IEG, which focuses on delivering innovative, client-centered utility solutions. What began as a side business offering 3D design and modelling services evolved into a fully-fledged consulting company specialising in high-risk utility infrastructure projects. Paul shares the early challenges of managing a small business and learning how to deal with demanding clients, quoting uncertainties, and avoiding scope creep. He reveals that becoming an entrepreneur wasn't originally planned, but his passion for pushing boundaries and trying new things made it a natural transition.  One of the early lessons Paul highlights is understanding how to manage risk and uncertainty while ensuring clear communication with clients. He believes success comes from delivering great work and building lasting relationships through trust and transparency. As we delve deeper into the discussion, Paul discusses the importance of company culture and personal branding for himself and his team. He emphasises the idea of being selective with clients, focusing on alignment with their values and leadership, which has been critical to IEG's growth.  Paul also discusses building trust and accountability within a team, sharing stories from his leadership experiences to set the right example. He believes that employees should reflect the company's values and build strong personal brands so that clients remember them for their excellent service. Paul is proud of the team culture at IEG, particularly the feedback they receive from clients who request specific team members by name, even if they weren't initially assigned to a project. He notes that this kind of client loyalty comes from consistently providing a "red carpet experience," which has helped IEG establish a reputation as a trusted advisor in the utility infrastructure space. One of Paul's top insights is the importance of strategic hires in scaling a business. He realised early on that to achieve stability and growth, he needed to hire a team he could trust unconditionally. He also highlights the need for flexibility and a "flex strategy" when scaling to handle surges in demand. This approach has helped IEG manage periods of rapid growth without compromising on quality.

Engineers across the globe, from China to East Africa and the US, are turning to a new, nature-based solutions to fight floods, which are becoming more likely in many places because of climate change. They're taking a pickaxe to asphalt and concrete and instead are restoring wetlands, parks and riverbanks, turning our metropolises into so-called ‘sponge cities'. Plants, trees and lakes act just like a sponge, mopping up rainwater instead of letting it pool and eventually flood our homes. Professor Priti Parikh tells Jordan Dunbar how these spongey solutions have many benefits beyond flooding, encouraging biodiversity, helping our mental health and storing the planet warming gas, carbon dioxide. The BBC's China Correspondent, Laura Bicker, meets the man who came up with the concept, Professor Kongjian Yu, and visits Zhengzhou, a sponge city in the making. And Katya Reyna tells Jordan how her NGO is helping low-income communities in Portland in the US to ‘depave' disused car parks, turning them into plant-oases. The group's focus is building cash-flow breakeven projects with product-market fit.  Early investment themes include wellness and corporate productivity. Before Post-PC Labs, Han was SVP of Engineering at Upwork, where he led one of the world's most distributed engineering teams:  350+ engineers in 40 countries around the world.  In this role, Han was responsible for any function that had anything to do with a computer, including Information Security, IT, QA, Application Engineering, Cloud Engineering, Data Science, Infrastructure Engineering, and Program Management.  During his tenure at Upwork, Upwork's revenue doubled, and the company went public in 2018.In a previous life, Han was an influential mobile engineering leader, having incubated world-class teams for eBay and Netflix.  Han's early work in mobile proved that it was possible to sell billions of dollars of goods and entertain hundreds of millions of people globally using just a mobile phone.  Together with his teams, Han helped launch and scale the eBay and Netflix programs from small incubation teams.  At eBay, he was the first engineer on his team. When Apple announced its one billionth download in the app store and celebrated the top 25 apps in the store of all time, eBay and Netflix were both on the list.Han started his career in enterprise software specializing in the finance and human resources domains and was a co-founder of Buddystumbler.com.  Han has a B.S and M.S in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research from U.C. Berkeley with a minor degree in Computer Science and a Management of Technology Certificate from the Haas School of Business."That's the language that you need to communicate with your colleagues, your peers. That's what everybody else understands. They're not going to understand, 'Oh, we need to migrate the data center to the cloud.' They're not going to understand that, 'Hey, these are all the technical reasons why a forklift could be very complicated.' You have to put it in terms that the business is going to understand. That is going to be the art, and along the way, I think if you use that framework, it helps your own teams understand why their work is relevant to the business.”- Han Yuan   Join us at ELC Annual 2023!ELC Annual is our flagship conference for engineering leaders. With 75M+ domain names under management, GoDaddy powers the world's largest cloud platform dedicated to side hustles and small businesses. As a SaaS provider, GoDaddy’s infrastructure needs to be high performing and highly secure, but invisible to customers. The company recently made a shift in IT infrastructure strategy, moving to hybrid cloud. GoDaddy’s VP of Infrastructure Engineering, Adnan Adil, stopped by to talk about what the company is learning in the early days of its hybrid cloud implementation and how a workload optimization strategy influenced their planning. By pivoting to hybrid cloud, GoDaddy will lower the TCO of its IT infrastructure, enable faster innovation, and be able to enter new markets quickly while maintaining a consistent customer experience. And because Intel powers many of the world’s data centers, GoDaddy can move to different cloud providers with ease and confidence. For more information about GoDaddy, visit GoDaddy.com.
