The Isley Brothers (/ˈaɪzli/ EYEZ-lee) are an American soul group originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, that began as a vocal trio consisting of the brothers O'Kelly Isley Jr., Rudolph Isley and Ronald Isley in the 1950s.[1][2][3][4][5] With a career spanning over seven decades, the group has enjoyed one of the "longest, most influential, and most diverse careers in the pantheon of popular music".[6]Together with a fourth brother, Vernon, the group performed gospel music until Vernon's death a few years after its formation. After moving to New York City in the late 1950s, the group had their first successes during these early years, and rose to prominence in 1959 with their fourth single, "Shout", written by the three brothers, which became their first single to chart on the Billboard Hot 100, and sold over a million copies. In the 1960s, the group recorded songs for a variety of labels, including the top 20 single "Twist and Shout" and the Motown single "This Old Heart of Mine (Is Weak for You)", before recording and releasing the Grammy Award-winning hit "It's Your Thing" on their own label, T-Neck Records. The inclusion of younger brothers Ernie Isley (lead guitar, drums) and Marvin Isley (bass guitar), and Rudolph's brother-in-law Chris Jasper (keyboards, synthesizers), in 1973 turned the original vocal trio into a complete band and led to the group's reaching the height of their success. For the next full decade, they recorded a string of top-selling albums including 3 + 3, Between the Sheets, and The Heat Is On, with the latter peaking at number one on the Billboard 200 chart. The six-member band splintered in 1983, with Ernie, Marvin, and Chris Jasper forming the short-lived spinoff group Isley-Jasper-Isley. The oldest member, O'Kelly, died in 1986. Afterwards Rudolph and Ronald released a pair of albums as a duo before Rudolph retired to a life in the Christian ministry in 1989. After multiple lineup changes, the remaining duo of Ronald and Ernie achieved mainstream success with the albums Mission to Please (1996), Eternal (2001) and Body Kiss (2003). Eternal spawned the top 20 hit "Contagious". As of 2025The Isley Brothers have sold over 18 million units in the United States alone.[7] With their first major hit charting in 1959 ("Shout"), and their last one in 2001 ("Contagious"), they are among the few groups ever to have hit the Billboard Hot 100 with new music in six different decades and the only act in musical history to have achieved this accomplishment in consecutive decades (1950s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and 2000s).[8] The group's long R&B chart span landed them a Guinness World Record.[9] Sixteen of their albums charted in the Top 40 and thirteen of those albums have been certified gold, platinum or multi-platinum by the RIAA. The brothers have been honored by several musical institutions, including the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which inducted them in 1992.[10] Five years later, they were added to Hollywood's Rockwalk, and in 2003 they were inducted to the Vocal Group Hall of Fame.[11] They received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014.[12]PICTURE: By T-Neck Records - Billboard, page 1, 7 June 1969, Public Domain, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=27166798

On its 50th anniversary, we delve into the pivotal album that transformed the Isleys from a group to one of the greatest bands of the 20th century, with the official addition of younger brothers Ernie and Marvin and brother-in-law Chris Jasper. With songs like "That Lady," which hints at a future rock guitar icon in Ernie Isley and "Summer Breeze," which broadened the breadth of what could be called black music and offered a master class in reinterpretation, 3+3 is an album deserving of deep reflection and reverence.

The song won the awards for Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song at the 2015 Grammy Awards. When the six members of THE ISLEY BROTHERS disbanded (1984), Marvin and Ernie Isley joined CHRIS JASPER and formed ISLEY-JASPER-ISLEY. Without this crucial musical component, THE ISLEY BROTHERS were no longer a self-produced, self-contained group. CHRIS JASPER brought his “unique sound” and musical talents to ISLEY-JASPER-ISLEY, and topped the charts singing lead vocals on “Caravan of Love” (1985), a song that was covered by English recording group, the Housemartins, an international #1 pop hit. “Caravan” was also used in commercials as part of a Dodge Caravan advertising campaign. He was also awarded a CEBA Award For Excellence for a Miller Brewing Company commercial. The music for that commercial formed the basis for “Brother to Brother” from the “Different Drummer” album, which supported the anti-apartheid struggle going on in South Africa at that time. His music has also been used in radio and television commercials, most recently “Who's That Lady” (Swiffer) and “Between The Sheets” (L'Oreal). When ISLEY-JASPER-ISLEY disbanded (1987), CHRIS JASPER brought his “unique sound” to his own solo projects, topping the charts with “SuperBad,” a song promoting the value of education. CHRIS JASPER has continued to write songs and produce his own R&B/Gospel music, as well as other artists, for his independent record label, Gold City Records (www.goldcitymusic.com). CHRIS JASPER's music has been covered and sampled by hundreds of new and established recording artists, including Whitney Houston, Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Gwen Stefani, Fantasia, Will Smith, Alliyah, Queen Latifah, Notorious B.I.G., Tupac, Natalie Cole, and the list goes on and on. His music has also been used in television and radio commercials. In 1992, CHRIS JASPER, along with the other members of THE ISLEY BROTHERS, was inducted into the ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME. Chris Jasper was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on December 30, 1951, the youngest of seven siblings. While growing up in Cincinnati, Chris studied classical piano starting at the age of 7 years old. After graduating from high school in Cincinnati, he moved to New York to study music composition at the Juilliard School of Music. Chris received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in music composition from C.W. Post College in New York, where he studied under noted jazz pianist and composer, Dr. Billy Taylor. He subsequently received a Juris Doctorate degree from Concord University School of Law. THE JASPER/ISLEY CONNECTION The Jasper and Isley families lived in the same apartment complex in Cincinnati, Ohio. Chris's older sister, Elaine, married Rudolph Isley. The three older Isley brothers, Rudolph, O'Kelly and Ronald, formed a vocal trio (“The Isley Brothers”) and relocated to Teaneck, New Jersey. While temporarily living in New Jersey as a teenager, Chris and the two younger Isley brothers, Marvin and Ernie, formed a band, “The Jazzmen Trio”, that played locally in New Jersey. Chris played keyboards, Ernie played guitar and Marvin played the bass. Along with Chris, Ernie and Marvin also attended C.W. Post College in New York. While in college, Chris, Marvin and Ernie played on the older Isley Brothers recordings, including “It's Your Thing”. SOLO CAREER In 1987, Isley-Jasper-Isley disbanded and Chris and Ernie embarked on solo careers. Chris formed his own record label, Gold City Records, and released two albums as a CBS-associated label. His debut single as a solo artist, “Superbad” reached #1 on the R&B charts. Eventually, Marvin and Ernie returned to record under the Isley Brothers group name, and Chris continued his solo career, releasing a total of 9 solo albums to date, including 4 urban contemporary gospel CDs. Chris has also produced a number of artists for his Gold City label, and has worked with such notable artists as Chaka Khan, writing and producing a song for her CK album (“Make It Last”). Chris's music has been covered and sampled by numerous new and established recording artists, including Whitney Houston, Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Gwen Stefani, Fantasia, Will Smith, Alliyah, Queen Latifah, Notorious B.I.G., Tupac, Natalie Cole, and the list goes on and on. The most recent addition to Gold City is Chris's son, Michael Jasper, who released his debut album “Addictive” on the Gold City label in 2010 at the age of 16. “Addictive” was written and recorded by Michael, and co-produced by Chris, who accompanies Michael on the talkbox and background vocals. Michael's is called CD "Dreams". Chris has received numerous gold and platinum albums and music industry awards, including the BET lifetime achievement award. In 1992, Chris, along with the other members of The Isley Brothers, was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. LA trio Moonchild have spent the last ten years toiling and developing their sound together. Their love for each other and the music is felt on “You Got One,” as the group cherry picks vocalist Alex Isley (daughter of The Isley Brothers' Ernie Isley) for a sweet and inviting track.

Beyond The Fame with Jason Fraley

WTOP Entertainment Reporter Jason Fraley chats with Ernie Isley of The Isley Brothers, who perform Friday and Saturday at Bethesda Blues & Jazz. They spoke in 2017 during a Wolf Trap tribute to what would have been the 75th birthday of Jimi Hendrix. You'll also hear from Hendrix's cousin, Nona Hendryx.

Enjoy An Album with Liam Withnail & Christopher Macarthur-Boyd

The Isley Brothers (pronounced “eyes-ly”) had existed as a vocal doo-wop trio since the late 50's, playing live with the pre-fame likes of Jimi Hendrix and Elton John. But in 1973 they collaborated with their two much younger brothers (and a controversial cousin) to update their sound from classic R&B to ultra-crisp funky soul. Their kid brother Ernie Isley joins the dots between Maggot Brain and Purple Rain with a laser-phaser guitar sound that rejuvenated old Isley standards and added an edge to cover versions of then-recent ‘plastic soul' hits.  It's also the 463rd Greatest Album of All Time, according to Rolling Stone magazine. Christopher Macarthur-Boyd and Liam Withnail listened to it, then talked about everything from the identity of the lady in “That Lady” to the inappropriate narration of the So So Madam Show, as well as the Doobie Brothers, rolling r's, Radiohead, car accidents, Wikipedia, and maths. All that and more, plus an underwhelming edition of Secret Posho, on episode 37 of Enjoy An Album. Enjoy!

The Ferment Podcast - Conversations About Worship And Transformation

Calvin Rodgers is a Chicago native and drummer who has been credited with revolutionizing the voice of gospel drumming. His parents realized at a very young age that Calvin shared their love for music and an even stronger love for the drums in particular. Both parents worked very hard to invest as much as they could into their son's promising future. Around the age of 9, Calvin began shadowing his father, a well-known gospel musician, and songwriter, as his personal drummer. This afforded Calvin the opportunity of learning from some of gospel music's most prolific songwriters, artists, and musicians. By the time he entered high school, he was traveling with GRAMMY-nominated choir master Ricky Dillard & New Generation. Around the same time, he became a part of the Ravinia Jazz Mentors program, spearheaded by jazz pianist, Ramsey Lewis. Upon graduating high school, Calvin began touring with Lewis and learning his way around the studio. While recording a radio commercial for Rice A Roni, Calvin met R&B crooner, R. Kelly. Kelly invited Calvin to join his band for his upcoming world tour, TP2. Upon completion of that tour, Calvin decided to place his focus on becoming a recording drummer. He also began finding his voice as an arranger and a producer. With over 200 live/studio albums listed to his credit, he has also recorded and toured with artists such as R.Kelly, Ramsey Lewis, Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, Dionne Warwick, Destiny's Child, Ronald Isley,  Ernie Isley, Avant, Jonathan Butler, Kirk Franklin, Marvin Sapp, Fred Hammond, Yolanda Adams, Israel Houghton, Donald Lawrence, John P. Kee, Tommy Simms, Tamela Mann, and many, many others. Though quite accomplished, Calvin continues to push himself in all areas while making sure to sow into the next generation through mentoring and private lessons.     In this episode of The Ferment, Calvin and Adam talk about the church as a safe space to raise up musicians and the necessity of continuing to expose yourself to new styles and skillsets to become a well-rounded player. Calvin also gives some solid advice about bringing yourself humbly into unfamiliar gig environments so as to be in service to the songs and the intention of those who hired you while also offering what makes you unique.  The conversation touches on investing in upcoming players, staying true to your roots, encouragement for the Vineyard Movement, and Calvin's personal fermentation process. Hi there you sacred “OwlHeads”, it's time again to join me on a retro journey through my song/demo archives. Episode 21! Wish I was 21 again… still - there's no point in crying over spilt milk, is there. This month's show has some intriguing escapades, I fancy. We will travel into Edgar Allen Poe territory where a new song of mine reveals the story of America's first ever vampire…. creepy/good. My devotion to the 70s Motown chartbuster's albums I collected as a kid comes into focus, particularly the work of “Soul God” Marvin Gaye. I'll spin a more than rare demo I wrote with the man who penned ‘Boogie Wonderland' for Earth,Wind and Fire… when my European pop roots met LA sophistication for the first time. Bootsie helps a rich London lord get back his ‘mojo' - M'lord's elitist confidence was suffering, it seems. It's a pathetic, sorry tale. Staying with the soul vibes I'll play a brand new song that reeks of my admiration for the Average White Band and Gino Vannelli. I even attempt a pseudo Ernie Isley guitar solo !!! And - you'll witness a real emergency in my studio as it happens live on the air - when my world perception is shattered, when I realize that I don't live alone… that some other entity shares my bachelor pad with me. You'll witness a grown man panic and dissolve into a blob of vibrating jelly of fear. Not a pretty sight, I do admit…. Sprinkled throughout will be the usual suspects - tracks from the ancient song vault of my long career. Lovely to have your company sacred OwlHeads - lay back and strap on the headphones. Martin

Morris Lee Mills (born June 10, Greenville,Texas , United States) is an American, rock and  funk singer-songwriter. For Black musicians "Rock" is a 4 letter word. The music genre of Rock has a handful of engineering craftsmen who have taken ownership in the art from while being members of the African-American culture. To be Black & a Rock musician is a small exclusive club. Single synonymous names like Prince and Jimi are distinguished not only as talented musicians, but identifiable figures in Rock music. Forerunners such as Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Thin Lizzy, Shuggie Otis & Ernie Isley opened doors for Rick James, Lenny Kravitz, Fishbone, Ben Harper & Living Colour. This passing of the torch includes the fusion of Jazz, Soul, Funk & Pop. It's a handshake amongst musicians that in this life of Rock is rare but sincere. Morris Mills now adds his name to that book of music. www.morrismills.com www.joekelleyradio.com

His music has also been used in radio and television commercials, most recently “Who’s That Lady” (Swiffer) and “Between The Sheets” (L’Oreal). CHRIS JASPER’s music has been covered and sampled by hundreds of new and established recording artists, including Whitney Houston, Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Gwen Stefani, Fantasia, Will Smith, Alliyah, Queen Latifah, Notorious B.I.G., Tupac, Natalie Cole, and the list goes on and on. Chris’s older sister, Elaine, married Rudolph Isley. The three older Isley brothers, Rudolph, O’Kelly and Ronald, formed a vocal trio (“The Isley Brothers”) and relocated to Teaneck, New Jersey. While in college, Chris, Marvin and Ernie played on the older Isley Brothers recordings, including “It’s Your Thing”. The most recent addition to Gold City is Chris’s 20-year old son, Michael Jasper, who released his debut album “Addictive” on the Gold City label in 2010 at the age of 16. The music for that commercial formed the basis for “Brother to Brother” from the “Different Drummer” album, which supported the anti-apartheid struggle going on in South Africa at that time. His music has also been used in radio and television commercials, most recently “Who’s That Lady” (Swiffer) and “Between The Sheets” (L’Oreal). When ISLEY-JASPER-ISLEY disbanded (1988), CHRIS JASPER brought his “unique sound” to his own solo projects, topping the charts with “SuperBad,” a song promoting the value of education. CHRIS JASPER has continued to write songs and produce his own R&B/Gospel music, as well as other artists, for his independent record label, Gold City Records (www.goldcitymusic.com). His music has also been used television and radio commercials In 1992, CHRIS JASPER, along with the other members of THE ISLEY BROTHERS, was inducted into the ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME. BACKGROUND AND EDUCATION Chris Jasper was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on December 30, 1951, the youngest of seven siblings. While growing up in Cincinnati, Chris studied classical piano starting at the age of 7 years old. After graduating from high school in Cincinnati, he moved to New York to study music composition at the Julliard School of Music. Chris’s older sister, Elaine, married Rudolph Isley. The three older Isley brothers, Rudolph, O’Kelly and Ronald, formed a vocal trio (“The Isley Brothers”) and relocated to Teaneck, New Jersey. While in college, Chris, Marvin and Ernie played on the older Isley Brothers recordings, including “It’s Your Thing”. THE ISLEY BROTHERS YEARS In 1973, Chris, Marvin and Ernie brought the songwriting and musical component to the older brothers vocal trio, making The Isley Brothers, a self-produced, self-contained six-member group. Their debut release as a 6-member band on their CBS-associated label was the 3+3 album. Chris was the primary songwriter, producer and arranger of The Isley Brothers music from 1973 (“3+3”) through 1983 (“Between the Sheets”). His arrangements and instrumentation as a classically-trained musician, and his expertise on the keyboards and synthesizers, have been credited as the foundation of the legendary “Isley Brothers Sound.” In 1984, the 6-member group disbanded due to internal problems. ISLEY-JASPER-ISLEY In 1984, Chris, Marvin and Ernie formed Isley-Jasper-Isley, a self-produced, self-contained trio, with Chris as the lead singer of the group, as well as the primary songwriter, producer and arranger. Isley-Jasper-Isley recorded 3 albums on their CBS-associated label, and earned recognition with their #1 hit, “Caravan of Love”. “Caravan” was covered by English recording group, the Housemartins, who made the song an international #1 hit. Chris’s music has been covered and sampled by numerous new and established recording artists, including Whitney Houston, Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Gwen Stefani, Fantasia, Will Smith, Alliyah, Queen Latifah, Notorious B.I.G., Tupac, Natalie Cole, and the list goes on and on. The most recent addition to Gold City is Chris’s 19-year old son, Michael Jasper, who released his debut album “Addictive” on the Gold City label. “Addictive” was written and recorded by Michael, and co-produced by Chris, who accompanies Michael on the talkbox and background vocals. Chris has received numerous gold and platinum albums and music industry awards, including the BET lifetime achievement award. In 1992, Chris, along with the other members of The Isley Brothers, was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Chris lives in New York with his wife of 30 years, Margie, and his three sons, Christopher, Nicholas and Michael. There is no doubt that among the great soul/funk groups of the 70s and early 80s, the Isleys were the baddest. They had the look down better than anyone; they had the smoke coming up from the ground in their concerts; and, more importantly, they could move from smoking funk songs like "Fight The Power" and "That Lady" to sweet ballads such as "For The Love of You" and "(At Your Best) You Are Love" with a seamlessness no one else could match. And while it is clear that Ronald Isley's magnetic voice and Ernie Isley's searing guitar solos were deserving of the kudos they've continued to receive to this day, Chris Jasper's influence on the unique sound of the Isleys has often been overlooked. His keyboard and moog work was the underpinning of the group's great dance tunes and was a key to their classic ballads such as "Groove With You" and "Between the Sheets."

Alex Isley is the daughter of Ernie Isley of the famous Isley Brothers. Don't expect to hear anything that resembles “Between the Sheets”; she's independently carving her way with her own unique sound in her debut project “The Love/Art Memoirs.” One thing, though, similar to the Isley tradition is undeniable smoothness. “Into Orbit” will send you there, while “The Boy Who Cried Love” puts a spin on love's karma. Self-written and produced, her lush vocals, harmonies, thought-provoking relatable topics, and soothing production make for easy listening.
