Tokyo is the capital of Japan, with a population of 13 million people, it is known as a place where the ultra modern and futuristic sits comfortably next to ancient tradition. Today we hear some legendary japanese music that broke new ground when it was released in the 1970s and 1980s as well as some modern pop music and electronic music by young artists that are active in Tokyo today. When you think of Tokyo, images of neon lights, futuristic technology, and almost science fiction-esque environments might be the first thing that comes into some peoples heads and it's true that Tokyo has for a long time been a center of technological innovation. And this is particularly true when it comes to music technology. In fact some of the most famous brands of electronic music instrumentation come from Japan including the likes of Korg, Roland and Yamaha and a lot of the most well known and recognised sounds in electronic music and modern pop come from drum machines and synthesizers that were developed by these companies in Japan. It should be no surprise then that one of the most influential and pioneering bands in the history of electronic music comes from Tokyo. In the late 1970s the Yellow Magic Orchestra a futuristic boyband formed of musicians Haruomi Hosono, Yukihiro Takahashi and Ryuichi Sakamoto emerged onto the scene with a groundbreaking form of electronic pop music powered by drum machines and synthesizers that would go on to immortalize them as important pioneers of electronic music second only to the likes of Kraftwerk who were doing similar things in Europe at the same time. Each of the members of YMO would go on to become hugely important figures in the world of electronic and experimental music. Ryuichi Sakamoto's Riot in Lagos is one of the first popular music recordings that features a Roland 808 Drum machine and that many people say can be considered to be the first example of Electro Music which would become huge in the development of hip hop a few years later in the United States thanks to music by the likes of Afrika bambaata and Hashim. Where Ryuichi Sakomoto is widely regarded for the influence he has had on avant garde electronic and film music. Haruomi Hosono is known as one of the most influential musicians in the history of Japanese Pop music in fact he is credited with shaping the sound of japanese pop music for decades. J pop is the term used to describe modern day popular Japanese Pop Music. Like K pop in Korea and Canto Pop in Hong Kong it's the type of music that fills stadiums with adoring young fans and which blends japanese lyrics and melodies with for standardised forms of western pop music. It has changed a lot since the 1960s when J-pop is supposed to have been birthed. Namie Amuro is an artist that has been called the Madona of J pop. She was active on the J pop scene between 1992 and 2018. This episode was quite focused on electronic music and electronic pop music made with synthesizers and Drum machines which in many ways is very fitting as Japan is a hub for the production of those kinds of instruments but Japan also has an amazing Psych Rock history, there's the whole world of J-pop which we briefly skimmed over today as well as plenty of other kinds of music from the country. As always this is just a snap shot and it's worth going to do a bit more digging of your own if you liked any of what you heard here.

The White Sox chased away the first of the Detroit Tigers' hopeful new tandem of pitching aces, Tarik Skubal, a bit ago as I write this. And tomorrow, they get the next in Casey Mize. I'm very excited(?) to watch the White Sox trying in futility to hit both of these top prospects. This episode, our 69th (nice), Pat and Grant join me to talk about One Piece, from Impel Down – Paramount War (or Marineford, or Summit War, whatever you prefer)! We're finally finishing up our pre-time skip One Piece chat, and we hope to be back in your ears around November to talk some more One Piece. Listen to our previous episodes on East Blue – Alabasta, Skypeia – Thriller Bark, and Thriller Bark – Amazon Lily too. Spoilers abound for those who have not read these arcs. And light spoilers for stuff after the time skip. We talked about Ivankov, including the okama and LGBTQ+ representation in One Piece, and I will say off the top that none of us are really the best folks to talk about those topics. So here's some further reading: The Dichotomy of Queerness in One Piece, Problematic faves: One Piece, One Piece and Queer Theory. That's just a very cursory Googling; if you have more articles or tweet threads or whatever, drop them in the comments, tweet them at the podcast, I'll add them here. The song you heard in this episode was "Fight Together" by Namie Amuro, from the One Piece anime. As always, you can find me on Twitter @ImpassionateK, and my co-hosts Helen (@WanderinDreamr) and Apryll (@manjiorin) on Twitter at those places in the parenthesis. You can find both of their writing at The Organization of Anti-Social Geniuses, more of Helen's writing at Narrative Investigations, and my writing at the Fandom Post. You can find Patz (@PatzPrime) at The Cockpit and ocassionally at Ani-Gamers. And you can find Grant (@grantthethief) at Blade Licking Thieves, the Super Sentai Podcast, Yatta-Tachi, and writing about One Piece over at Anime News Network, starting with episode 913. Listen Show notes: 0:53 - We talk about Impel Down! 33:44 - We talk about the Paramount War! Next time is Seven Little Sons of the Dragon and Witch's Printing Office!

Lynn Mabry, born in a musical family & raised in church, singing was as natural as breathing. In 1975 she audition for Latin artist Coke Escovedo at the suggestion of a friend. To her surprise, she was hired as one of his lead singers and began performing weekends at the historic King Richards Night club in Jack London Square in Oakland CA., and opened for Earth Wind & Fire. The rest is musical history. A few months later, seeing her professional potential, her cousin Sly Stone (of Sly & The Family Stone) hired her to sing on his solo project “Heard You Missed Me” album, and followed with a promotional tour opening for Parliament Funkadelic and Bootsy Collins. During the tour, George Clinton enlisted Lynn with the other back up singers for many of his production projects. By 1977, she and the other singers were asked to join the band. She toured & recorded with the funk family P-Funl for over 4 years. Through this, Clinton launched and produced her first album as one of the original Brides Of Funkenstein, entitled “Funk or Walk” that topped Billboard’s Top 10 dance charts in 1978. She became a proud parent of her daughter Akasha born in December of ’79. Although she took a 2-year break from touring, Lynn was being sought after, and eventually returned back to the scene in 1981. Touring internationally with Rita Coolidge, and immediately following, became a member of the Talking Heads (’82 - ’84). Starred in their highly acclaimed hit feature film “Stop Making Sense” and video “Naive Melody”. Went on to appear in other musically driven motion pictures such as “Tape Heads” & “The Night Before”. Also appeared in and co-wrote the opening track for “Chasing Popi”. In 1988 she was hired as featured vocalist for George Michael’s ‘Faith” tour & “Cover to Cover” tour in 1991, and on to other tours with Don Henley, Feetwood Mac, and Stevie Nicks. From ’92 thru’94, performed as featured vocalist on tour with Bette Midler and appeared in Midler’s HBO Special “Diva Las Vegas”. Frequently appearing on many variety & award shows including The Tonight Show, David Letterman, Pat Sajack, Grammy, American Music and Image Awards among many others. 2013 appeared on Jimmy Kimmel, and Ellen backing up Kenny Rogers and The Killers. Over the years Lynn has also recorded, toured, and or appeared in videos with artist such as Mick Jagger, Elton John, Rod Stewart, Celine Dion, Eric Clapton, Dave Stewart, Sheila E., Ernie Isley, Chris Isaac, Neil Shawn, and many more, including some of the mega A-list Japanese artist like Namie Amuro, Ichiki Yazawa, Ruichi Sakamoto, Minako Yoshida, and Masayoshi Takanaka. In 1995 retired from touring and ventured into the music business by partnering with world-renowned performing artist & entertainer Sheila E., by becoming Vice President & Executive Director of their newly formed music production company Heaven Productions Music. Shortly after, she began managing Sheila exclusively in 1997 thru 2012. In 2011 launched her new management company White Rose Entertainment & Investment Group and adding to her management roster, songwriter & performer: Havis, Image Producer & Wardrobe Stylist: Roni Burks, and her newest client pop and R&B Artist: Justin Avery. She was featured in the Academy Award winning documentary “20 Feet From Stardom” 2014. In addition to Lynn’s extensive previous music business involvement, she embraces her passion for children as a philanthropist. She is Co-Founder of the Elevate Hope & Elevate Oakland Foundations, promoting music and arts education for at risk youth in public and private institutions, as well as an alternative form of therapy for children with special needs. Music and the arts continue to be her main focus to assist in making a substantial difference in the world. At present, she has returned to the stage performing with Sheila E., as well as being a proud grandparent of 2 lovely grandchildren.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lynn_Mabry

A. Deep Aries Live! The show that plays multi-genre music, notable interviews

There are singers and then there are Vocal Architects. Maxayn Lewis is the latter - not only a coveted session and touring vocalist but a passionate and conscientious instructor and coach for people in all walks of life to use their voices to their maximum capacity. Just call it "The Max Factor!" The resume of Maxayn Lewis is an impressive one that includes recording with artists ranging from Dionne Warwick, Diana Ross and Celine Dion to Michael Jackson and Madonna. She has toured with Quiet Storm greats Brenda Russell and Gino Vannelli, jazz legend Les McCann and renowned blues man Bobby "Blue" Bland, as well as many superstars in the Japanese pop world such as Omega Tribe, Toshinobu Kubota, Anri, Akina Nakamori, Sanno Motoharu and Namie Amuro.     Maxayn (pronounced max-ann - the "y" is silent) grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma as Paulette Parker, a region renowned for producing great musicians - from rocker Leon Russell to funk masters the GAP Band (both of which she has worked with). She came upon her vocal gifts naturally from her mother, C. Lorene Parker, who was a fantastic gospel singer but, more practically, a chef by trade. Maxayn cites her as well as the incomparable Nina Simone as major inspirations. She sang in a classical conservatory and later honed her chops in jazz nightclubs and the particularly demanding Marshall amplified music of rock clubs.     Her big break arrived when the legendary Tina Turner blew into town and recruited her for a world tour. On this tour, Maxayn wowed critics and musicians alike including English rock royalty David Bowie and Mick Jagger, who referred her for gigs.
