So much of the talk when it comes to the climate crisis is doom and gloom. It's hard for many not to become a little defeatist or to throw their hands up and ignore the problem. The solution to that kind of despair is action - little actions that move us all toward a more sustainable future. And those actions - and the conversation about them - can be a happy one! Today's guest is Dr. Jiaying Zhao, who connects climate action to our own personal happiness in a way that we hope spurs some of that action - and makes you happy along the way! What happens when you provide unhoused people with a large sum of money? Jiaying Zhao shares the results of a study in Vancouver, BC, which include reduced shelter use, more spending on food and rent, and no increase in spending on “temptation goods” like drugs and alcohol.
You'd probably guess that a major factor contributing to homelessness is a lack of money. Yet, very few programs provide unconditional and lump sum cash to unhoused individuals as a solution. There are a number of barriers that have impeded the broad implementation of this type of assistance, which include the lack of policymaker support and public mistrust in homeless people's ability to manage money. Our guest this week found that direct cash transfers actually result in net societal savings over time. Jiaying Zhao is an associate professor, Canada research chair and a Sauder distinguished scholar at the University of British Columbia. She co-authored “Unconditional cash transfers reduce homelessness,” which was published recently in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal. Zhao, who has personally experienced housing insecurity in the past, joins WITHpod to discuss the cognitive taxes of poverty, rethinking the homogenous narrative about who homeless people are, the most surprising findings from the study, intended policy changes and more.
Researchers from UBC teamed up with Foundations for Social Change to conduct a study where they gave a one-time cash transfer of $7,500 to people experiencing homelessness. The results of the study were eye-opening for some, expected for others. Mind Full spoke with Dr. Jiaying Zhao, the lead author of the study, and Amber Dyce, CEO of Foundations for Social Change, about the study itself and the possibilities for ending homelessness. We gave $7,500 to people experiencing homelessness — here's what happened next https://psych.ubc.ca/news/cash-transfers-to-people-experiencing-homelessness/ Foundations for Social Change website: https://forsocialchange.org/
In 2018, Vancouver non-profit Foundations for Social Change, along with researchers from UBC, set out to do a small experiment: a one-year trial where they gave a lump sum of $7,500 cash, no strings attached, directly to people experiencing homelessness to see whether the direct cash method would provide them with a leg up finding stable housing, or if they would instead spend it on temptation goods (drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, etc.). Several local shelters were enlisted to help them find suitable candidates for their study, which was led by Dr. Jiaying Zhao (PhD, Associate Professor, Canada Research Chair, UBC). The results – published only a few weeks ago – shed light on how the homeless actually spend their money while also providing clues for what they need to succeed moving forward. For further reading on this study, check out the links below...A B.C. research project gave homeless people $7,500 each — the results were 'beautifully surprising' - CBCA Canadian study gave $7,500 to homeless people. It's Hump Day! Sam and Emma speak with Dr. Jiaying Zhao, Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of British Columbia, to discuss her recent research into the benefits of guaranteed cash transfers, and how they can help reduce homelessness. Then, they're joined by actor Shaan Sharma, member of the SAG-AFTRA negotiating committee, to discuss the recent updates on the strike and the ongoing negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). First, they run through updates on Gabe Amo's victory in Rhode Island, Saudi Arabia's oil production cut, Trump's Mar-a-Lago case, the Cop City RICO indictment, Russian bombing in Ukraine, COVID hospitalizations, captive audience meetings and AirBnbs in New York, and Google's anti-monopoly trials, before parsing through Atlanta's role as the testing ground for building massive Police day camps despite active local pushback – and how to criminalize those that won't stop. Dr. Jiaying Zhao then outlines her study into the massive impact of direct cash transfers on the lives of homeless people and on the government's pockets, with only $7,500 drastically reducing both the extent of time spent homeless and the net spending on aid. Then, Shaan Sharma updates us on SAG-AFTRA's negotiations with Hollywood studios, why the studios refuse to negotiate in good faith for anyone but Wall Street and the shareholders, and the complete corruption of corporate America. And in the Fun Half: Joe Rogan tells Oliver Anthony you can't just tax the rich, Jeannine Pirro thinks hurricanes started in the 1400s, Elon Musk melts down about Jews ruining his business, and Saul roasts Sam for a second consecutive day and offers his opinions on Bugattis. Environmental sustainability is one of the most pressing concerns of our time. And while this is something most of us can agree on, turning that consensus into action is more difficult. If we want to make progress on our climate targets, we need to work smarter. One tool policy-makers and organizations are turning to is psychology. If we know how people come to their decisions, we can design policies that help them make good decisions on their own. Our guest this episode felt compelled to put psychology to use in sustainability; she sees it as a behavioural problem as much as an environmental problem. Dr. Jiaying Zhao, Canada Research Chair in Behavioural Sustainability, talks with us about how to nudge people to better decisions.See more of Dr. Zhao's research at lab: https://zhaolab.psych.ubc.ca.Find her on Twitter @jiayingzhao.Listen to our other podcasts at conferenceboard.ca/insights/podcasts. On today’s episode we are joined by Dr. Jiaying Zhao from the University of British Columbia to talk about how direct cash transfers can reduce homelessness and improve wellbeing in people experiencing homelessness. Jiaying shares with us how providing homeless people with $7500 aided them in finding employment, improved their cognitive function, alleviated concerns of food security, and enabled these individuals to find stable housing solutions. How did individuals spend the money they received? How quickly did the participants find housing? How much would direct cash transfers save governments and funding agencies? All this and much more in Reducing Homelessness with Direct Cash Transfers with Dr. Jiaying Zhao!
In this episode, the Madames try in vain to figure out why our favorite S.H.I.E.L.D. agents are acting so strangely. Nathaniel Malick infiltrates Jemma’s brain to try and find Fitz, while Kora infiltrates the Lighthouse. In an effort to be unpredictable, Daisy, Mack, & Sousa follow Malick & the Zephyr into space, leaving May & Coulson to deal with Kora, who claims to want to join S.H.I.E.L.D. After a couple failed interrogations, Kora knocks out the power to the Lighthouse, which somehow allows Sybil to slither into the network. And it’s a little unclear as to whose side Coulson is actually on. Meanwhile, Malick digs into Jemma’s brain, activating an apparent failsafe that causes Jemma’s to completely forget Fitz’s existence. In cooperation with Sybil (and possibly an unwitting Coulson), Malick & the Chronicoms destroy every S.H.I.E.L.D. base worldwide. Malick & Kora are reunited on the Zephyr, though Kora doesn’t seem as comfortable after learning that Malick killed Jiaying. In this endless episode, Nathaniel Malick recruits a young John Garrett to take on S.H.I.E.L.D. While the team tries to protect Jiaying at the Lighthouse, Jemma fears for Fitz’s life as Daisy tries to bond with her mother. Malick & Garrett are busy stealing Inhuman powers, so Coulson & Gordon infiltrate Afterlife to save the hostages. But they are immediately captured, and Coulson gets a demonstration of Cora’s power & Garrett’s newly acquired teleporting abilities. Coulson eventually escapes, and along with Mack & YoYo, rescues the remaining Inhumans & takes Cora. Meanwhile, Garrett & Malick attack the Lighthouse, with the latter murdering Jiaying & fleeing before Daisy & May can capture him. Malick & Garrett hijack the Zephyr & abduct Jemma, hoping that she will lead them to Fitz. Unbeknownst to the kidnappers, Deke is also aboard the Zephyr. What’s Malick’s endgame? Your guess is as good as ours. Episode show notes Send us an email at themarvelousmadames@gmail.com Follow us on Twitter & Instagram

Showrunners are husband and wife: Maurissa Tancharoen and Jed Whedon FEEDBACK [42:56] E-MAIL Oh8four to stargatepioneer Shield 710 feedback I'm so stressed out. You can't really go wrong with a well-prepared villain, and wow, is Nathaniel Malick prepared. He just oozes dislikability (is that a word?) and you can't wait for him to get his comeuppance. Just the little taste of him momentarily being hurt by Jiaying was satisfying, and then watching him kill her for it was brutal. And with James Paxton doing a pretty decent impression of his late dad (and having so much fun doing it), we're left with two incredibly unlikable guys getting the best of our team in nearly every way. And that's honestly where I want to be two weeks before the 2 part finale. I'll take my sunshine and rainbows later on; give me the despair now. The rest of the episode impressed me, considering the masterpiece that it had to follow. Daisy's first talk with Jiaying gave me goosebumps knowing what was in their future. And hearing that future retold through the voice of an a-hole later on wasn't just exposition to me; it was a twist of that knife. Guys, I'm really excited to hopefully watch this guy die. That'll be all for me this week, I'll just be sitting here wondering why Coulson could instantly remember random bits of history from Shield Academy but not what John Garrett looked like when they were SHIELD recruits. I'm pretty sure they were both trained together by Nick Fury. It'll take a little bit of time to headcanon my way around that. Until next time! When things are "Stolen", the good guys must make it right. In 1983 Nathaniel Malick is determined to create anarchy everywhere. He steals the powers of the captured Inhumans and give them to his mercenaries. And he's recruited a young John Garrett to help him by having Sybil show him what his future holds. Our heroes must protect Jiaying from them and free Afterlife. But Malick has the upper hand. And it may be that he's not really after Jiaying at all. Jay and Josh promise to give the powers back after they're finished with them–honestly–on this week's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Case Files.
In this episode, we journey back to Afterlife as YoYo seeks Jiaying’s help in regaining her Inhuman power. At Daisy’s suggestion, May joins YoYo for that mission while the rest of the team remains aboard the Zephyr in hopes of fixing the time drive. Mack & Jemma look to a depressed new Coulson for answers, but he has neither the knowledge nor the spirit to help. Sousa, Deke, & Enoch also strike out, so it’s up to YoYo to regain her super speed & remove the problematic piece of the time drive. With help from May & Jiaying, YoYo releases the buried feelings that have been suppressing her power, but Nathaniel Malick crashes the party. With a force of HYDRA goons, Malick attacks Afterlife and recruits Jiaying’s dangerous daughter, Cora, to his side. May & YoYo escape, with plans to rendezvous later with Jiaying & Gordon. Once back on the Zephyr, YoYo regains her power & is able to “pull the plug” on the time drive. But something goes wrong, & the Zephyr is once again pulled through time with no idea where or when they are going. This week the Agents are still in the 80's but we take a trip to a place we've been before in previous seasons: After Life. To help fix the time drive, Elena needs her speed back and to figure out what's wrong, they need someone familiar with Inhumans. Enter Jiaying, Daisy's mother. There are several key things that happen this episode: May's "empathy" powers are increasing. She now doesn't have to touch someone to feel what they're feeling Elena's powers were never gone, she was just holding herself back. Also turns out that when she uses her powers, she doesn't have to bounce back to the place she started. She's just a regular speedster Jiaying had another daughter (Daisy has a sister) who was supposed to die but has now teamed up with Malik (who is now evil Quake). With Nathan taking over Afterlife and driving Jiaying and Gordon out, it makes me wonder if this is when Jiaying meets up with Calvin Zabo and conceives Daisy? That last one there brings up the interesting question again of how much is actually changing in the history of Shield and the Agents. Maybe in some ways all these things were meant to happen. It will be interesting seeing how all this plays out. Also it's well past the time to start worrying about where Fitz is. Like what you hear? Subscribe so you don't miss an episode! S2:E20 - Jess and Jared recap and discuss “Scars”. Jiaying and Gonzales show their true colors just in time for Coulson to find a balance in being the Director of a joint S.H.I.E.L.D. Fair warning, the comic connections section is the first 20 minutes, and is mostly about the joys of letting go of specific adaptational expectations, and Jared may go into a Pride/general representation rant about how certain franchises and shows are putting Marvel to shame. We are really starting to regret that Hot Pocket earlier. This episode, Joshua and Lani finally discuss who Skye is in the 616, the evil(?) of Jiaying, and wonder why this NuSHIELD storyline happened at all.
To open the second season of Till The Bottom we bring you Jiaying Lin, a Chinese PhD candidate researching urban planning in TU Dresden. Jiaying joined us to talk about a personal topic with huge resonance potential. For an innumerable amount of immigrants the so-called "cultural shock" associated with settling in a new home is an external as well as an internal struggle. The internal upheaval unfolding as one adapts to a new environment can amount to no less than an "identity crisis", or more positively, an "identity revolution". Jiaying has gone through a bit of both. In this episode we explore Jiaying's own identity revolution as she weighs the merits and drawbacks of the "Eastern" way of life on the one hand and the "Western" lifestyle on the other. We talk about stereotypes, collectivism vs individualism, cultural templates of success and even the curious quirks of the dating scene in some Eastern cultures. Hope you enjoy! Today on Mindset Monday I speak with Jiaying Zhao about the Scarcity mindset and how it impacts everyone. She brings her own story about growing up in China living in an area experiencing poverty and tells us that is has led her to dedicate her life to researching and helping some of the most vulnerable and poor people. She shares her lens on this topic as well as some research and statistics from her work. Meet Jiaying Jiaying has her PhD in Cognitive Psychology and is an Assistant Professor for the Department of Psychology at UBC. She is a Canada Research Chair (t2) in Behavioral Sustainability. She belongs to the Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability. She loves her work of research, supervising students, research projects, teaching, and service. On The Synergy Mindset Podcast, she takes us back to the beginning of her story and shares about her life growing up in China. She tells us she grew up poor and had intimate experiences in her family and in society at that time. Her family got out of poverty and she was able to pursue an education in Canada. She was interested in poverty because of her personal experience and when she was in graduate school, one of her Ph.D. advisors was working on poverty. Jiaying jumped on board immediately because it was a personal interest and passion of hers since childhood. They wanted to understand what makes the poor poor and for the last decade have been investigating a psychological cognitive explanation of the behaviors of low-income individuals. Scarcity Mindset is a condition of not having enough or the feeling of not having enough. This can be money, time, calories, pretty much anything. It is experienced by pretty much everyone in the world. When someone is feeling scarcity they begin to tunnel their resources. They focus only on the task at hand and can end up making poor decisions due to a lack of seeing the big picture. Jiaying uses the example of money scarcity and how people borrow money, such payday loans, with high interest to solve the moment's problems. They neglect everything else and those other things are equally important. This is a cognitive phenom. There are other scarcity mindsets. There are social driven ones as well. In society, we tend to view low-income individuals as lazy or not-competent and it is most of the time, unfair and not true. The poor suffer a lot of stigma because of their poverty identity. Therefore, a poor person may be worried about how others view them based on the perception that they know the average person will view them. These are mental burdens on the poor. It uses cognitive resources and the worry has effects. This constant worry reduces IQ, decreases performance and testing, When Jiaying grew up in China in the 80's everyone was poor therefore she experienced equality. Here in Canada, we have inequality of super-rich to all ranges which causes even more of a stereotype. We need to change the public perception of the poor and there are several initiatives on the way. Self-fulfilling Prophecy A vicious cycle, the person perceives the stereotype is true about them, therefore, acts with behavior that is destructive or will be in ways to confirm the belief and ends up becoming the person that the stigma projects. It can be broken by realizing the stereotype or belief is not true. This is how we can begin to dissociate the situation from the individual. The individual can change their belief about themselves and therefore change their behavior. Policymakers can help make a difference as well. Jiaying has met with leaders to discuss how the government can help by increasing the overall income for low-income people. She suggests that we look at the impact the cash incentives will have on a person and what their individual needs... --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/lvmountaintops/message

Claire's response to how to deal with Matt is pretty reasonable. "Davai, Davai.." Man, that was a new way to see how to kill someone, dropping an fire extinguisher from 20 meter down onto his head. Hmmm, so that just incapacitated him. Daddy Murdock not sticking to the plan...will this end like Butch on Pulp Fiction or Homer, when Angel-Moe had to come to rescue him? What the Dickens (Orphan Black reference) is Claire wearing there? But like KKK. A medically savvy KKK. Matt listening if Russian friend will live. Well that depends when/if somebody finds him in that dumpster. I wouldn't be surprised if kid Matt actor is really blind or just a great performer. All in all I felt the actors were more comfortable with each other, although they most likely shot most scenes out of sequence anyway. My eyes are falling asleeeeeeeoe bye now Andi...somehow forgot in first mail to add my name. _________________________________ Andreas Kuehn May 13 (13 days ago) to stargatepioneer After last weeks cliffhanger, I would expect Skye entering the house, finding "stoned" Gonzales and figuring out that something is seriously wrong with Jiaying. Jiaying telling Gordon to "take care" of Gonzales, meaning blasting everything to pieces to destroy every evidence. Sure Lauren did the "maaaahp" sound from Sterling Archer, after they blasted the building. Like me. Holy Frak how Skye took out that Agent! But May really shouldn't try reason with her right now. Jiaying's plan to distrust seems to work. Ugh! Man, all that plus the May vs. Skye bonnanza, and that was just the pre title logo sequence! Perfect, so Jiaying has powers like X-Men's Rogue! Aaaaargh, pushing that needle under Bobbi's fingernail is too brutal for me. Gutting, chopping off heads, no problemo, but this...uhrrrrr. Really beginning to dislike Agent Weaver. How disrespectful she talked to Mack. Simmons finding out about Cal's substances...I have a BAAAAD feeling about this! No surprise that Jiaying would kill Raina, but that Skye would see it from the bushes. Please! Let it be May posing as Agent 33, while Kara is still sleeping!!! Poor Cal, being the puppet for Jiaying. But man are the SHIELD people dumb for taking Cal to the medical wing from where he can escape. If Gordon and Lincoln doesn't understand it by now, when Jiaying opens up the briefcase with the crystals, then they can't be helped. Nice, Coulson taking out the battering ram from Winter Soldier out of the closet. And managing to derage Cal. Quite a feat! Hahaha, Mack asking for these skills from Skye! Last episode I was wondering which unconscious body they carried through the ship. So that was Skye. "Ginger Ninjas" *rachelsnort, at least Lincoln is finally beginning to question of what is going on. I predict, in the end he will sacrifice himself. Only in the end they show Bobbi's chair was chained to the ground. First suspected she would try to knock down the rifle. In the end sliding into the line of the bullet. Next best decision. This two-parter is bannanas! Now May managed to trick kara to pose as May, to go to Ward and Ward to shoot her. Wow!! Mack mentioning Fox News...priceless! If there wouldn't have been talk about a Spin-Off show, I would feel way more anxious about Bobbi's current critical condition. How did Skye know about her mother using the crystal on the ship to kill Beardy Agent? Really Simmons??!! Now you are bringing up this delicate topic?! As if Fitz doesn't need anything extra to cloud his mind during this crucial mission! Skye vs. Ginger Ninjas and all the rest is more grand than some action movies in the cinema. Really Skye??! Talking with your mom while her goons load the crystals on a plane?? "And together we can rule the galaxy as father and son....oh mother and daughter". Very Empire Strikes Back. I was so freaking out when Skye let her mom come closer...to freaking touch her and suck out her life energy!!!!! How they decided to make Skye's eyes bleached out, hen Jiaying tries to kills her. Though Skye still had some energy left for that power move to push the plane from the ship. So that happens when two different objects try to exist in the same space: Bye Gordon, really liked you but Jiaying had you already around her finger for many years. FRAAAAAK!...was that quick thinking by Mack! Jamie Lannister sends his regards. Awwwwww, Cal doing the deed for Skye to snap Jiaying's neck. Daddy really loves his Daisy. Well that concludes everything, right?? Oh, what happened to Ward in the meantime?? What plans is Coulson printing back at base? So he will become a Real-Life-Decoy? My guess, May took vacation to hunt down Ward. Ohhhh, the feels again at the end with Cal and Skye....Oh noes so they gave Cal the "Magical Place" treatment. Do you think he asked for that or not? Come ON!!! Fitz not seeing that he opened the box!!!! Or was he mind-controlled? All in all grandiose Season Final and gripping 2nd season. Now Dichen Lachman can return to "The 100". This week on Agents of Steranko, our Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD podcast, we are chatting episode 220 “Scars.” After Age of Ultron, Coulson and the gang get back to the main story as the two SHIELDs become one again and the inevitable confrontation with the Inhumans leads everyone down a dangerous path. This was a nice setup for the two-hour finale. With a wrap-up of the two-SHIELDs plotline we move back to Afterlife and the Inhumans. It was nice to see them resolve that story, and the shocking end to the episode keeps the momentum going into the finale. We both really enjoyed Raina in this episode, her motivations were unclear and well masked throughout the episode. The turn of Jiaying was a dark and disappointing turn for Skye and her troubled family, but it set us up for an explosive finale. It's time to choose a side as S.H.I.E.L.D. gets ready to index the Inhumans in Agents of SHIELD: Scars on IMDb, and Skye is caught in the middle. Everyone admirably justifies their own positions, but who's right and who's wrong? Everyone from Coulson to Jiaying, from Gonzales to Cal, has to make their argument, and it's difficult not to agree with everyone! Join us for show news, episode analysis, our new "Sassy Coulson Moment" feature with Faith, and our "Sandbox Mailbox" for listener feedback! This week we talk about Kara's double cross, Mack's departure, Bobbi's self-doubt, Coulson's concessions, and Skye's tough decision moving forward. Read more... Even "Scars" tell stories. Now that we know Coulson's secret Theta Protocol was all about a helicarrier, we can build a better SHIELD with Gonzales and Coulson working together. Their first assignment is trying to develop a friendly relationship (aka, putting them on the index to keep an eye on them) with the Inhumans. So Coulson sends Gonzales to negotiate things. Raina is busy trying to manipulate things back at Afterlife, but it seems as if Jiaying has her own plans when dealing with SHIELD. Things begin to go horribly wrong for just about everyone as we careen uncontrollably towards the season finale. Jay and Josh may be spending way too much time together on this week's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Case Files. Download now, to decrypt the data-stream directly to your MP3 player!
This weeks on Agents of Steranko, our Marvel's Agents of SHIELD podcast, we are chatting episode 217 "Melinda." We finally find out how Melinda May became known as The Cavalry and Mind Na Wen blows it out of the park with one of the most emotional performances the show has seen. Meanwhile Skye is finally getting answers, both about how her Inhuman powers work and another great emotional scene as she finally meets her mother, Jiaying. Chloe Bennett has been on a role all season, from her scenes with Brett Dalton's Grant Ward to her amazing growth as the first SHIELD member with powers. We both loved this episode and dive right in to chat about all the tie-ins this episode gave us. The Melinda flashback was well tied to the story of Jiaying, Skye and a darker vision of the Inhumans and Afterlife. We also found the scenes with Gordon and Raina surprisingly compelling and nuanced. A lot of ground is being laid in these last few episodes and "it's all tied together," as we will soon come up against Avengers: Age of Ultron and the setup for a new SHIELD spinoff show. Have no fear! The Cavalry is here! That's what they call Agent "Melinda" May. And this week, we find out why. It all had to do with a mission to Bahrain, where she and Coulson took a group of agents in to collect a Russian woman with some very inhuman powers. It took a serious turn for the worse and it's connected to Jiaying and the Afterlife. And Skye is going to find out all about it. Jay and Josh need your pain on this week's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Case Files. Download now, to decrypt the data-stream directly to your MP3 player!
Gonzales' team continues to pick away at Coulson's secrets, giving Bobbi doubts and inspiring Fitz and Simmons to enact a brilliant con in Afterlife. With Skye figuring out her "gift" and Mike Peterson back in business, will powered people be instrumental in Coulson getting his team back? Join us for show news, episode analysis, and our "Sandbox Mailbox" for listener feedback! This week we talk about May's limited choices, Bobbi's doubts, Simmons' sandwich, Jiaying's survival skills, and the true motives of Gordon, Lincoln, and others at the Inhumans retreat. Read more...
