My guest this week is Cameron Tucker, Head of News and Content at KMTV. Cam and I begin by chatting about the BFI-funded series Generation Why that we both worked on in which we made sure young people from across the UK were fully represented. We find out why the series has been so transformational, and has helped us look beyond the world we know. We talk about how the world is both bigger and smaller, and we find out about Cameron's love of travel. He was born in Manhattan but grew up in Hong Kong where his grandfather was a policeman. We chat about hybrid identities and one's place in the world, including in the context of sport. Cameron talks about the records e.g. photos that he has from those days, and about his new role as a father. We discuss the importance of connection and the relationships we have with childhood friends, and how we continue from where we left off when we meet them, as well as the way places evolve. We then move on to reflect on the role of nostalgia in a changing world. Cam also talks about the role that music has played in his life, e.g. how he grew up listening to the soundtrack to Good Will Hunting. We find out how Cam ended up with KMTV in Kent, after previously working as a junior reporter in Hong Kong. He did work experience too during his degree in East Anglia. He has also done a great deal of freelancing, and has been at KMTV for seven years. We talk about the infamous ‘pot plant story' when Cam was doing a report which appeared on the Jimmy Kimmel Show in the US. Cameron talks about the role of negative experiences and the impact on nostalgia and answers it in relation to a wonderful Anthony Hopkins anecdote. Then, at the end of the interview, we talk about the role of authenticity in the way we project ourselves in broadcasting, and we find out whether Cameron is a looking back or a looking forward type of person.
My guest this week is Gabriel Morris, Video Journalist at KMTV. We begin by talking about our Cardiff connection, and learn that Gabriel, who is originally from Hertfordshire, studied Geography in Liverpool and went into broadcast journalism. We find out where the spark for broadcast journalism came from, having grown up as a child with watching BBC Breakfast News each morning. Like me, Gabriel used to pretend he was reading the news from teletext. We also learn why Gabriel likes to watch himself back, and he gives away one of his tricks of the trade. Gabriel talks about his hospital radio work in Liverpool which he did for nearly two years up until the pandemic, and about the music he played and the on-air puzzles he did with the listeners. He has also done student radio, and he built his own studio in his student bedroom and was involved with ‘mission impossible' challenges. We learn that he would like one day to return to radio, and we hear Gabriel's thoughts on zoo radio and find out what happened once when Gabriel left the station without handing in the key. We talk about the intimacy element of radio and the role of podcasts. I explain too why I prefer live radio, and Gabriel talks about why it can work even better when things go wrong. We find out that one of Gabriel's reports was once picked up by The Sun and Gabriel reflects on how at the age of 15 he had interviewed James Cleverly, Jeremy Corbyn and John McDonnell. Then, towards the end of the interview, we discuss whether Gabriel knew what path he was on when he was younger (we find out that his dream job was to be a pilot) and we learn whether he is a looking back or forward type of person and how doing the interview has made him rethink his answer to that question.

Originally, she wanted to be a print journalist but Sofia explains why she especially loves telling a story through TV. Sofia also reveals how quickly one needs to learn in such a short amount of time. We learn that Sofia's favourite movie is Harry Potter and how she doesn't get tired of it, and how she also likes to watch films which take her by surprise. We talk about the ‘Sliding Doors' and ‘what if' notion, too, and about the way not having breakfast in the morning can impact in unexpected ways on how one's day unfolds. We find out about the teachers who have inspired her, including Rob Bailey at the University of Kent with whom Sofia went on to work at KMTV, and the experience of reporting from the count in Tunbridge Wells at the local elections. We learn about how Sofia and her peers have been thrown in the deep end due to the quantity of breaking news over recent years, and we discuss the local element to the news in Kent. Then, at the end of the interview, before finding out whether she is a looking back or a looking forward type of person, we have a big reveal – Sofia announces that she is moving to BBC South East in mid-June.
My guest this week is Andy Richards, Channel Director of KMTV. Born in Guernsey in 1982, Andy reveals what it was like to grow up on a small island. The first film he saw was ET and Andy discusses the importance in those days of Blockbuster Video where he worked when he was 18, and we learn about the migration in that era from VHS to DVD. We talk about the success of particular films from those days, such as The Shawshank Redemption, the role played by technology including AI, and we talk about the importance of theatre. Andy also discusses the culture and professions of those who live in the Channel Islands, and how arts and humanities were really important to him. Andy went pretty much as far away as he could to university, studying for a year at the University of Teesside. He had been told he wasn't university material, and Andy discusses how Middlesbrough was quite a challenging environment, and quite a contrast to Guernsey, and we find out why he ended up transferring to Chichester. Andy talks about his work ethic, what he has learned about himself, and what he learned about the poverty he saw around him, and how he got into journalism. We discover that Andy loved radio but didn't know he wanted to be a journalist until he became one. Andy talks about an interview that went badly and how the station asked him back and he ended up falling in love with journalism. Andy also reflects on the nature of management, and why he draws on the analogy of the end of 8 Mile in terms of the importance of owning your own mistakes. Andy, who also worked for ITV as an onscreen reporter, reveals who his heroes are, and we find out about the decision he took to finally leave Guernsey and how he ended up running KMTV. Then, towards the end of the interview, I ask Andy whether one can be nostalgic about negative experiences and whether he is a looking back or a looking forward type of person, and Andy ruminates on the future of things at Kent. He discusses how the media world and academia work according to different timescales. And Andy announces an exclusive on my podcast – that Generation Why, a series I made with KMTV and where I am the lead presenter, is going to be screening on ITV.
My guest this week is Abby Hook, Assistant News Editor, journalist and presenter at KMTV where she has been based for the last two years. Journalism wasn't the route Abby thought she would originally follow, and she discusses how much she loves learning, and we find out why Abby doesn't want people to recognize her for doing just one thing. We talk about the way we present ourselves and the way others will perceive us, and how one gets their personality across when covering a range of stories, as well as about how Abby uses social media as a timeline. Abby grew up in Surrey, and we learn about her wonderful extended family. We find out about the role that confidence plays in her life and how she originally associated journalism with a profession that people hate. We talk about the role of the audience, and how Abby will be recognized in the street, and how her nan keeps up with her by watching her on TV of an evening. We discuss the viewer that we will imagine speaking to when we are on TV, the things that go wrong, and about the notion of being the person who is the ‘centre of attention', as well as about the role of music and camping growing up, and doing karaoke with her mum which was more nerve-racking than going on TV. Abby talks candidly about the heartbreaking end of a relationship and how much the experience has taught her, what she has learned about herself, the importance of not losing oneself in a relationship, and having a strong sense of self. Then, at the end of the interview, we discuss the concept of ‘it's meant to be', and Abby reveals why she is a forward-looking type of person and why she has a fear of failure.

Florida man arrested for trying to buy 8-year-old girl for $100,000 A Florida sex offender was arrested after he allegedly tried to “purchase” an 8-year-old girl for $100,000 at a grocery store, police said. Hellmuth Kolb, 85, approached the child's mom at a Winn Dixie in Port Orange Thursday and made the indecent proposal, according to the Port Orange Police Department. Kolb was on probation and was banned from having contact with children after trying to buy a different child in Walmart in 2018, according to WESH-TV. Lauren Benning told the station she thought Kolb was just a lonely old man when he approached her and her daughter. “He just came up and he started making comments about how pretty she was and how good her dancing was and how he could never have children and he wanted children,” Benning reportedly said. But the interaction soon took a dark turn, Benning told the station. “Approached me in the parking lot. Actually chased me down in the parking lot and said ‘hey, I want to make a deal with you.' I'd like to buy her for $100,000. I was in complete shock.” “He needs to be locked up and not allowed to be around our children,” she reportedly said. Florida man arrested for calling sex worker on his honeymoon A Florida man was arrested on his honeymoon after he answered an ad for a prostitute, according to a local report. Paul Turovsky, 34, left his new bride sleeping in their hotel room in Tampa and went out to meet a prostitute he had connected with online, authorities said. When the self-employed businessman arrived at the Hyatt Hotel, he was placed in handcuffs, caught up in a sting operation by local police to crackdown on sex trafficking. “The only question here was, as a wedding guest, was it too late to get the gifts that they gave returned back to them,” said Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister, adding that Turovsky was one of 176 men arrested in the sting operation. A Catholic charity hired a man to simulate a mass shooting at their building, complete with actors covered in blood. The drill ended with his arrest. A Nebraska man hired by a local charity to simulate a mass shooting has been charged with making terroristic threats. The Omaha World-Herald reported that John Channels was advised by Catholic Charities, an organization with branches across the US, to make the drill realistic — which he did, complete with paid actors covered in blood. Unfortunately, the simulation caused chaos among employees who thought the shooting was real. The news outlet reported that bloodied actors laid in hallways throughout the office building. One employee told the World-Herald she heard shots behind her and jumped off a retaining wall to try and hide in a dumpster. The incident, which occurred on May 19, 2022, began with Channels firing at a conference room window of the office building in which employees happened to be gathered, according to the news outlet. One elderly employee told police she thought she was going to die. "This is it," she told the World-Herald. Channels' lawyer, Erin Wetzel, told the publication that Catholic Charities requested the 27-year-old conduct the drill in that specific manner. "It's important to note that several of (the directors) went along with it, and while it was happening, they were not informing employees of what was going on, even as they were asking," Wetzel said. Omaha Catholic Charities' executive director, Denise Bartels, said in a statement that the group hired Channels "based upon recommendations from respected sources, and he clearly misrepresented himself and his qualifications." Channels' LinkedIn page states he's a police officer for the Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska and that he's also the CEO of a security firm called Exousia Protection Agency. Neither organization responded to Insider's requests for comment. The Daily Beast reported law enforcement said they weren't alerted to the drill and responded as if it were an active crime scene. Don Kleine, the attorney for Douglas County told the news outlet that "police came, they didn't know this was happening. They thought it was a real active shooter. There were people calling 911." Local news station KMTV reported that Channels identified himself to police as an Offutt Civilian Police Officer. On Tuesday, Channels was arrested and charged with five counts of making terroristic threats and one weapons count, according to the World-Herald. This isn't Channels' only run-in with the law. In May, he was arrested and charged with three felonies which included first-degree sexual assault of a child, visual depiction of sexually explicit conduct of a child, and attempted intentional child abuse. It's unclear if the charity knew of his prior charges. Catholic Charities, Erin Wetzel, the Douglas County Attorney's Office, and the Omaha police department did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment. Australian soccer club ‘extremely saddened' after players' public sex act video goes viral A Melbourne suburban football club has released a statement to say it is “extremely saddened” after senior players were filmed performing a public sex act during Mad Monday celebrations. Video of the act, which appears to have been performed in a public bar in front of teammates, has been spreading across the internet. The shocking video shows one player exposing his genitals before another man performs a sex act on him as cheering can be heard in the background of the video. The Glen Waverley Football Club has confirmed the players involved are members of the club's senior playing group and confirmed the video was taken this week during end-of-season celebrations that were not sanctioned by the club. The Herald Sun reports a patron also claims the players were also abusive to other people in the public establishment. The Glen Waverley Football and Netball Club released a letter to its members and wider community to state the players involved will be disciplined. “The committee has been made aware of an incident which has occurred during the post-season celebrations of some of our senior playing group,” the statement said. “While this occurred away from the club and was not a club-sanctioned event, we are extremely saddened and disappointed in the behavior shown by people who should know better. “The club is taking immediate action to address the serious breach of our culture and values that has occurred within this incident. “The individuals involved, along with the broader playing group will be both disciplined and educated and if need be, counseled in the type of conduct expected by members of our club, along with the physical and emotional impact this has had on the families involved, club members, players and the wider community,” the statement said. “There is no further comment at this time, and we request that the wellbeing of those be respected as they deal with the impact from the incident.” Two Air France pilots suspended over mid-flight fight in cockpit It was a case of fight or flight. Two Air France pilots have been suspended after they exchanged blows in the cockpit during a flight from Geneva to Paris in June, an airline official said Sunday. The plane had just taken off from the Swiss city when the pilot and co-pilot got into an argument that led to one of them throwing a punch and the two grabbing at each other's collars, Switzerland's La Tribune reported. The cabin crew was forced to intervene, and one member stayed in the cockpit to babysit the pair for the remainder of the approximately one hour and 15 minute flight to the French capital. The mid-air brawl didn't affect the rest of the flight, and the plane landed safely, according to an airline rep. A spokeswoman for the airline also called the behavior of the since-grounded pilots “totally inappropriate,” Bloomberg reported. Grandpa hits daughter's fiance who had pants down in front of 5-year-old, PA cops say The grandfather of a 5-year-old girl found his daughter's fiance with his pants down in front of the child, according to Pennsylvania authorities. The grandpa walked past a bedroom in the multifamily house and saw his granddaughter sitting on the lap of 22-year-old Aaron Cunagin, his daughter's fiance, on Aug. 24, according to court documents obtained by McClatchy News. He thought this “was weird, but did not think anything else” about it, an affidavit shows. A few minutes later, the grandfather began to think the bedroom was “too quiet” and went to look, the affidavit says. He walked in to find Cunagin in the corner of the bedroom with his pants down and genitals exposed in front of the 5-year-old girl who also had her pants down and genitals exposed, the documents say. The grandfather punched Cunagin, yelled and called the police, according to the affidavit. The Middletown Borough Police Department arrived at the apartment and arrested Cunagin, according to an Aug. 25 news release. Three-time EMMY® award-winning investigative reporter Mark Pettit, returns to write the final chapter in his best-selling, and now newly updated book - A Need to Kill: The Death Row Drawings." Dramatic and chilling new evidence comes to light exposing the sinister thoughts running through the mind of John Joubert - the man behind the brutal murders of two young boys in Nebraska. In the spirit of Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood," Pettit delves into the Joubert case to tell the dramatic story from all angles as a non-fiction novel. In a series of exclusive, face-to-face interviews with Pettit, Joubert admits to a string of violent crimes and another killing that sends investigators into a frenzy ending with Joubert being convicted for a third murder and ultimately executed in Nebraska's electric chair. Now, Pettit uncovers shocking new evidence from Joubert's prison records proving the killer was fantasizing about committing more violent crimes. Never-before-seen death row drawings made by Joubert while he waited to be executed once again send a chill through Nebraska and those touched by Joubert's horrific crimes. In the updated version of his book, Pettit opens his investigative files to the public sharing never-before-scene evidence. Pettit reveals aspects of Joubert's personality from exclusive interviews and details from the death row discussions that have never been shared publicly. Criminal profiler Keith Howard--who has investigated more than 1,000 crimes--weighs in with a dramatic assessment of the death row drawings, calling Joubert as a "sexual sadist, pedophile and organized killer." Howard's full assessment of Joubert is included in the book. Pettit is a 25-year veteran journalist. A former anchor at CNN, Pettit also worked as an anchor and investigative reporter at WXIA-TV (NBC) in Atlanta and KMTV-3 (CBS) in Omaha. A NEED TO KILL: The Death Row Drawings-Mark Pettit
