Original air date: June 20, 2023 Janine Shepherd was on track to represent her home nation of Australia in the Olympics as a cross-country skier – but then her dream, quite literally, crashed when she was hit by a utility truck while on a bicycle training exercise with her teammates. She came out the other side of that horrific accident and the 6 months of arduous recovery that followed to discover she was a paraplegic. But as she explains to Warwick, her identity as “Janine the Machine,” the elite athlete, was not to be her destiny. She had another calling, learning to fly and training others to be pilots, and inspiring multitudes who have suffered tragedies and trials to embrace loss as their lives' greatest teacher. An in-demand speaker whose Ted talk was been viewed more than 2 million times, Shepherd calls herself “a mirror to help people see their own defiant spirits." Her guiding philosophy? “Nothing comes easy, and if it did, it wouldn't be worth having.” To learn more about Janine Shepherd, visit www.janineshepherd.com To explore Beyond the Crucible assets, including our free Life of Significance assessment, visit www.beyondthecrucible.com Have a question or comment? “I am a spiritual being having a human experience.” I am getting a bit philosophical as I explore this idea of we are not our bodies or our minds or our job, ect. I get into how we can learn to drop labels we give ourselves and see ourselves as the dynamic individuals that we are. I share how we are having a mortal experience but that we are so much more than all of it. I refer to some great articles and videos that helped me understand maybe a little bit more this idea of not being all of the many things that can easily define us. Come get philosophical with me and explore this topic. For more information and show notes: www.findingthefloor.com/ep048You are not your body by Janine Shepherd at TedxKC

If I can't walk, well then, I'll fly). On this special Mother's Day episode Joe De Sena talks with Janine Shepherd. She was training with the Australian Ski Team, positioned to be headed towards the Olympics, when a tragic accident sent her to a spinal ward for 6 months. She was forced to shift everything she thought defined her. She has led her life by the concept that a broken body is not a broken person. Through her dedication to Hope Theory- where hope is a cognitive skill- based on goals, pathways and agency- she guides us to cultivate resilience within ourselves. At the end of the episode hear what Joe De Sena and the rest of the Spartan Up team learned from their mothers! What does Janine advise to thriving in the difficult times we are facing? One way is to create goals with soul. You want to be striving towards something that you really look forward to and that has you racing out of bed. Be optimistic and have gratitude towards the work that you GET to do. Remember, those around you especially your kids are learning their models of resilience by watching you. Next - start your day with a gratitude practice. Morning is best because it sets your day on the right track EARLY. Then ask - what would make today great? An last, strength is not just about the body, it’s truly about the mind. It’s important to practice “self-compassion” breaks and realize that with dedication and positivity you can Accomplish anything. Today we'll be interviewing Janine Shepherd, Former elite athlete, Aerobatics pilot, author, speaker and resilience coach whose TED talk has over 1.6 millions views and is a favourite on TED.com.
I had such a blast on this episode with best-selling author and film producer James Whittaker! After 10 incredibly successful years as a financial planner where he ran a company with over 2 Billion dollars under management, James started his own entrepreneurial journey and has since interviewed over 200 of the most successful people on the planet. He is the author and film producer of the sequel to the best-selling personal development book of all time, Think and Grow Rich: The Legacy, which shares the epic stories of Rob Dyrdek, Barbara Corcoran and Janine Shepherd (coming on the show soon!). James attributes much of his success to his ability to define his mission and strategy and then schedule the necessary actions in his calendar so that he always know what to do next. If you want to learn how to set and achieve big goals, schedule your life, and win the day every day, this episode is for you! Max Out Insights: Figure out your perfect destination in all areas of your life and backtrack it to one year, 90 days, 30 days, and today Once you have your 90 day plan, schedule actions in your calendar and tick them off every day What if this was your fault? Janine Shepherd is an inspirational speaker and writer whose books have become classics in the survivor genre. A champion cross-country skier in training for the 1988 winter Olympics, Janine's life changed forever when she was hit by a truck during a bicycle training ride in the Blue Mountains of Australia.Doctors warned her parents that—even if she somehow miraculously survived her massive injuries—Janine would almost certainly never walk again. After a risky procedure to rebuild her shattered vertebra, and almost six months flat on her back in a hospital spinal ward, Janine came home to heal. With the promise of a career as an elite athlete now gone forever, Janine faced a daunting recovery and an uncertain future.Struggling to rehabilitate with permanent disabilities, Janine rekindled her defiant spirit in a dramatically improbable way. Sitting outside in her wheelchair one day and watching a small plane fly overhead, she declared, “That's it! If I can't walk, I'll fly!”Still encased in a full body cast, Janine had to be lifted into an aircraft for her introductory flight lesson. But within a year she had defied the odds and succeeded in gaining her private pilot's license. Her talent and skill as a pilot subsequently earned Janine a commercial pilot license and ultimately, her flying instructor's rating. She then decided to learn to fly upside down, and finally, to teach aerobatic flight to other pilots.Janine went on to succeed not only as a professional pilot but also to attain her University degree, raise three children and author several best-selling books. Her remarkable life story ultimately captured the interest of a prominent film company, which produced the feature length movie, aptly titled Never Tell Me Never. In recognition of her service to the community and her tireless efforts in raising awareness for spinal cord research, Janine was awarded the Order of Australia, her nation's highest honor. She is an ambassador for Spinal Cure Australia and Red Bull's “Wings for Life” and a contributor to Deepak Chopra's workshops. Janine's story has been featured on 60 Minutes, This is Your Life and CNN's Turning Points with Dr. Sanjay Gupta. Her inspirational and emotional TEDx talk, “A Broken Body Isn't a Broken Person,” has been viewed almost 2 million times. She was recently named as an “Architect of Change” in Maria Shriver's “Sunday Paper” Her latest book, “Defiant: A Memoir” was published for worldwide distribution by SoundsTrue®.Janine lives in Wyoming, USA but is frequently traveling the globe delivering keynotes and her inspirational message of “defiance.” For more information, visit janineshepherd.com.Please do NOT hesitate to reach out to me for any reason on LinkedIn, Instagram, or via email mark@vudream.comLinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-metry/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/markmetry/Twitter - https://twitter.com/markymetryMedium - https://medium.com/@markymetryFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/Humans.2.0.PodcastMark Metry - https://www.markmetry.com/Humans 2.0 Twitter - https://twitter.com/Humans2Podcast

Today’s guest is Janine Shepherd and I’m so honored she shared her story with me and my community. Janine has defeated the odds (more than once!) and is inspiring so many with her life-changing journey. She was a very talented skier on the Australian Olympic team when she suffered a life-altering and supposedly permanent paralysis. But Janine did not accept the fate of that injury and took charge to make her life goals happen by rehabilitating her injured body. Janine fought really hard, not only to get herself walking again, but she decided that she was going to become a licensed commercial pilot, licensed acrobatic pilot and a licensed instructor within 18 months of the time of her accident. “When you find meaning in suffering, suffering ceases to exist.” ~ Janine Shepherd She speaks so openly and honestly about what life was like right after her accident and how she has dealt with, and grown and learned from, more recent losses including divorce, financial loss, and chronic pain. There is something in Janine’s story that is relatable to us all. You’re going to want to hear this! I hope that what you take from this conversation is some inspiration to not let your current circumstances define your future and to allow yourself to dream bigger for your life. I’d love to hear what you think of this conversation and how you see it translating to your own life. Be sure to comment below or connect with me on Instagram to tell me all about it. Leveling Up: Creating Everything From Nothing with Natalie Jill
“When you are at rock bottom it doesn't show you who you ARE it shows you who you are NOT” Janine Shepherd was an elite athlete known as “Janine the Machine.” It was on a bike ride with her teammates while Training for the olympics that tragedy struck....she was hit by a truck head on. Janine woke up 10 days later in the ICU with her neck and back broken in multiple places, collapsed bones and ribs and paralyzed from the waist down. She spent 6 months in the spinal ward trying to wrap her mind around what had happened to her. Her body - that body that had defined her - was no longer Janine the Machine. With all consuming pain, no movement from the waist down, a catheter bottle that would become part of her, Janine recalls feeling like she was in another world - like she was in a life that was meant for someone else - not her. In this episode, you will learn: The mindset needed to overcome ANYTHING How your physical doesn't define who you are When your life becomes 'derailed' how do you create your next purpose
Janine Shepherd was a cross-country skier training for the Olympics when a utility truck ran her over and crushed her body along with her dreams. She was not expected to live, let alone walk but she did both. Not only did she learn how to walk again, she learned how to fly, earning her pilot's license and becoming a flying instructor in a span of 18 months. Her message: You are NOT your body.
When many people think of heroes, they thing of the fairytales and comic books like Superman, Batman, and Spiderman. The true heroes are not the ones who came out of imagination, but real people risking it all and making a difference in the world like the people in the military, doctors, servicemen and women, mothers and fathers, and even those who come back from the brink of death and show us what it means to have resilience, meaning, purpose, strength and vulnerability. Janine Shepherd is one of those heroes. Defiant is her autobiography. This podcast contains the lessons I learned from her story. Enjoy!

Janine Shepherd reveals the story of the accident that changed her life and how you can learn who you really are by overcoming obstacles . Janine Shepherd is a former Olympic skier-turned-pilot. Her career as an athlete ended when she suffered life-threatening injuries when hit by a truck during a training bike ride. Before the accident, she had been in contention to win Australia's first ever medal at the Winter Olympics. Though she was told she would never walk again or have children, and doctors had significant doubts as to whether she would survive at all, she defied all of these, and her story later became the focus of national attention, as well as a popular telemovie. She is the author of the new book Defiant: A Broken Body Is Not a Broken Person. Podcast Highlights Who is Janine Shepherd? Janine started her athletic career at the age of 6 which is the age where she discovered her “superpower”. Janine found her love of the hills, she learned that by loving the hills she became physically stronger than her competitors but also mentally tough. That is where she earned the nickname “Janine the Machine”. There is always another hill. Once you accept that life has hills, the hills don’t matter anymore. How did you go from running to Olympic skiing? Australia is not known for winter sports but it actually has ideal conditions for winter training. Janine decided early on that she was going to be the one to break the 4-minute mile of Australian winter sports. She was invited by the Canadian Olympic team to train in preparation for the 1988 Calgary games prior to the accident that changed her life. Janine’s mindset around hills made cross country skiing the winter sport that she knew she could excel at. The Day Janine’s Life Change Most athletes competing at a high level need to be extremely focused. During a long day of training, Janine suffered a terrible accident. Janine was struck by a speeding truck which resulted in a number of life threatening injuries, injuries that she was not supposed to survive. After 10 days in extensive care and a death experience, she returned to her body and realized there is a difference between what happens to your body and what happens to you. As an athlete, Janine defined herself with her body. When her body became damaged, she had to make the choice to redefine her identity and experience life in a completely different way. After extensive surgery and six months in the recovery ward, she was told that the damage was permanent and she would never be able to do things she did before. Janine felt like a prisoner in someone else’s body and became depressed. After a frank discussion with a doctor about Janine’s sex life, Janine felt like she hit rock bottom and had lost everything. Rock bottom doesn’t reveal who you are, it reveals who you are not. Who are you Janine? Janine is not her body. There is something inside of you, your spirit, that is independent of your physical body. Janine still loved the hills. If you tie your self worth to things that are outside of you, you are doomed for failure. Life is a dance between letting go of who you are and becoming who you will be. What have you been able to do since? Janine had a moment of clarity one day and decided that if she can’t walk, she could fly. She booked a trial flight with an instructor and that day discovered her love of flying. There is no greater metaphor for freedom than flying. The magic happens on the other side of the hill. Within 18 months, Janine became a fully licensed pilot and ended up teaching others how to fly at the same place she received her first training flight. Janine found a sen

"Sometimes we hold onto the life we think we're supposed to have. But in letting go, we get new possibilities." Janine Shepherd grew up an athlete in rural Australia. At 24, she was training for her first Olympics. On a 5-hour training ride, she was hit by a truck. Janine was left with a broken neck and back, massive internal bleeding and blood pressure at 40 over nothing. Janine Shepherd was not expected to survive. Miraculously, 10 days later, the internal bleeding stopped. She was in the hospital for six months. When she came home, she was paralyzed from the waste down, wrapped in a plaster body cast and attached to a catheter. She was told she'd never be able to do any of the things she did before. Janine decided "Maybe I can't do the things I did before, but I am going to do something extraordinary!" You don't want to miss what Janine has done in the 20+ years since her accident. Join us on this amazing interview. SHOW NOTES: A one time Olympic-destined skier, Janine has found deeper purpose in "hills" - "The magic happens on the other side of the hill. You don't have to like hills, but you have to learn to love them; to understanding the value in challenge." The gift of rock bottom is that there is no where to hide. It doesn't show you who you are; it shows you who are not. I let go of all of my Olympic dreams and, in that moment, I realized the only way to heal comes not from running from an experience but living through it. Sometimes we hold onto the life we think we are supposed to have. But in letting go we get new possibilities. The day she decided to become a pilot, she was still covered in a body cast. It was her dream and it changed her life; it gave her a reason to get out of bed. She learned to manage her chronic pain through focus and acceptance. I am not my body. This was the most important thing I've learned. Get her book Defiant: "Say yes to life regardless of your challenges, that's defiance." Hear her TED talk here. JANINE SHEPHERD'S INSPIRED 7 1. What is the best book you’ve ever read? Man's Search for Meaning, by Viktor Frankl. "We want to know that our life counts and has meaning. There's no meaning of life, there's only meaning in life and we create that meaning by how we live." 2. Tomorrow you discover your wealthy uncle shockingly dies at the age of 103; leaving you millions. What would you do? I would love to find a cure for spinal cord injury. 3. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? Nothing. Nothing in that house really counts. They are just things. 4. You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? Jesus and Buddha. I would ask: "How do we get people to remember that it's all about love, tolerance and acceptance?" 5. What is the best advice you’ve ever received? When my daughter was learning to ride a pony, her riding instructor said to me: "Hasten slowly." What it means to me is slow down, be deliberate, savor the experience. 6. Looking back, what advice would you give yourself at age 20? Hasten slowly. What you think is important now, when you get older you'll realize it wasn't. 7. It’s been said that all great people can have their lives summed up in one sentence. How do you want yours to read? Janine embraced her defiant human spirit. *** Live Inspired – IN STUDIO: Registration is NOW OPEN for a very limited time. Today I have a special guest who has overcome challenges both physical and financial in her life. Janine Shepherd is the author of Defiant : A Broken Body Is Not A Broken Person. She was […] The post ACP136 Overcome Challenges in Your Life and Career with Janine Shepherd appeared first on Aviation Careers Podcast.

Do you ever wonder how you'd behave in extreme situations? If you were training for the olympics as a cross country skier, got smashed by a truck, were diagnosed as a paraplegic, were in rehab for six months, what would you do? I can tell you that I'm pretty confident that I wouldn't become an aerobatic flight instructor as soon as I was discharged. That is, however, what Janine Shepherd did, and she is my guest on the podcast today. Janine has written a memoir about her incredible years after the accident; how she became a flight instructor, how she was told that she wouldn't be able to have children, but yet she did; some of the more intimate details of what her doctors told her, how she was treated, and how she overcame. The book is called Defiant: A Broken Body is Not a Broken Person Through powerful and emotive storytelling, there is something for everyone in Janine's message of hope. DEFIANT topics include the following: Why some people don't give up and can succeed against all odds. Struggling to rehabilitate with permanent disabilities, Janine rekindled her defiant spirit in a dramatically improbable way. Seeing a small plane fly overhead one day, she declared, “That's it! If I can't walk, I'll fly!” How to come back from a major loss. It's not about whether or not you will face adversity, it's how you approach it. Once she let go of “Janine, the athlete,” which was how she had always defined herself, Janine was able to create a completely new life. Her ultimate goal: become a pilot, even though she'd never flown a small airplane and was disabled. Little goals kept her going along the way. A broken body is not a broken person. Janine's mantra: You are not your body, and you have the choice to create new dreams. Be defined not by what you've lost, but instead by who you are and what you can become. What to do when things don't go as planned. Janine's real strength didn't come from her body. This realization changed everything. She was no longer tied to a set path, and was free to explore life's infinite possibilities. Janine's recipe for healthy defiant living. Janine learns about how to not just survive, but to flourish in the face of adversity. Challenges and change are not to be dreaded, but actually welcomed as opportunities to thrive in unexpected ways. The concept of disability. Janine inspires those coping with physical disabilities and other challenges to believe in the power of potential. Her accomplishments (and mindset) far outweigh any disability. Janine Shepherd is an inspirational speaker. She was awarded the Order of Australia, the nation's highest honor, for her service to the community, her inspiration and her work in raising awareness of spinal cord research. She is a contributor to Deepak Chopra's workshops and has been featured on 60 Minutes, This is Your Life and CNN's Turning Points with Dr. Sanjay Gupta. Do you ever feel your problems are insurmountable? Well, today's guest, Janine Shepherd, author of DEFIANT: A Broken Body Is Not A Broken Person, will inspire you to never give up. Her memoir chronicles her remarkable life as an Australian elite ski racer, known as “Janine the Machine,” who was hit by a truck during a bicycle ride in the Blue Mountains of Australia, just before competing in the Calgary Winter Olympics. Doctors did not expect Janine to survive after her accident, and when she did, they warned her that she would never walk again. She not only learned to walk again, she learned to fly. DEFIANT takes us from the pinnacle of elite athletics competition to the pain and fear of being wheelchair-bound and facing the shattering reality of life-threatening and permanent injury; from the exhilaration of flight to the struggle of taking one difficult step at a time on a long road to recovery, which continues to this day. Jeanine shares life lessons about dealing with adversity.
