L'attentat antisémite de Bondi, qui a endeuillé l'Australie le 14 décembre dernier, pourrait fracturer plus profondément le pays. Malgré une politique migratoire très stricte, l'Australie se faisait le champion du multiculturalisme. Ainsi, certains signes inquiètent : forte progression du parti d'extrême droite One Nation, progression des groupuscules néo-nazis, mais aussi une multiplication des actes racistes, ciblant en particulier la communauté musulmane. De notre correspondant à Sidney, À la mosquée de Lakemba, la plus grande d'Australie, située dans la banlieue ouest de Sydney, c'est la dernière prière du vendredi avant le début du ramadan. Cette année, le cœur n'est pas à la fête. La mosquée a reçu deux lettres de menaces en à peine dix jours et sa page Facebook est noyée sous les commentaires haineux et insultants.  D'après Jamal Kio, le porte-parole de l'association qui gère le lieu de culte, les fidèles aussi sont victimes de cette haine. « Certains se font insulter, d'autres se font cracher dessus et des femmes se font arracher leur voile, témoigne-t-il. Cette forme de racisme direct, qui devient violent, est inquiétante. »  Lubna, qui fréquente régulièrement la mosquée, n'a pour sa part pas subi ce genre de violences, mais cela ne l'empêche pas de vivre dans la peur. « Je vis dans un quartier musulman, donc je ne me sens pas rejetée ou mise à l'écart. Mais si je devais sortir de ce quartier, je ne me sentirais pas en sécurité, affirme-t-elle, et je me sentirais en danger parce qu'après ce qui s'est passé en décembre, tout le monde accuse les musulmans. »  À lire aussiAustralie: au moins 16 morts dans une fusillade visant la communauté juive à Sydney, dont un assaillant Un racisme ancré historiquement Ce sentiment, partagé par la communauté musulmane, se traduit également dans les intentions de vote. Un récent sondage crédite ainsi One Nation de 26 % des voix, un niveau encore jamais atteint par ce parti d'extrême droite, qui, depuis trente ans, dénonce l'immigration non européenne.  Plus inquiétant encore, des groupuscules néo-nazis gagnent eux aussi en popularité. « Ils ont probablement doublé leur nombre en 2025 et pour eux, Bondi, c'était comme un trophée, analyse Kaz Ross, qui étudie depuis des années l'activité de ces groupes en ligne. Parce que leur argument, c'est de dire que ce massacre n'aurait pas eu lieu s'il n'y avait pas eu de juifs et de musulmans. Nous devons réintégrer tous ceux en Australie qui ne sont pas des Blancs d'ascendance européenne. »  Face à ce danger et suite à l'attentat de Bondi, le gouvernement a durci ses lois réprimant les discours de haine, ce qui a entraîné la dissolution du plus connu des groupes néo-nazis, le Réseau national socialiste.  Reste que pour Jordan McSwiney, spécialiste de l'extrême droite, le gouvernement pourrait mieux faire pour combattre le racisme : « On ne peut pas combattre efficacement le racisme en isolant une forme particulière de racisme, comme l'antisémitisme ou l'islamophobie, défend-il. Elles font partie d'une forme plus large de racisme et de suprématisme blanc qu'il faut absolument combattre. » De fait, la forme la plus négligée de racisme est aussi la plus ancienne, c'est le racisme qui cible les Aborigènes. Le 26 janvier dernier, à Perth, un homme a jeté une bombe artisanale en plein milieu d'un rassemblement aborigène, qui n'a heureusement pas explosé. The rise and rise of the unit market is keeping the Greater Sydney market busy, although below the exceptional levels seen in some of the other market jurisdictions across Australia.  Unit markets are considerably more positive than house markets in our most expensive capital city and the market share of attached dwellings continues to rise. In our latest analysis, well over half of all residential sales across Greater Sydney are attached dwellings. In most of the Greater Sydney municipalities where sales activity is strong, it's the unit markets that are most active. Outer ring house markets are generally subdued, suggesting that those seeking affordable options are choosing apartments and townhouses.  The dominance of attached dwellings in Sydney market performance can be seen in various metrics, resulting from our most recent analysis of activity. While 45% of locations with house markets have positive rankings in our latest analysis, 67% of unit markets are positive. This includes 24% of house locations classified as rising markets, in contrast to 37% of unit locations. This coincides with further evidence that a growing share of dwelling sales in the Greater Sydney market are attached dwellings.  Comparing the June Quarter results for the past four years, the market-share of units was 48% in 2021, 50% in 2022, 52% in 2023 and 54% in 2024. So the latest quarter has shown a resurgence in sales activity in Sydney, inspired by rising demand for attached dwellings. In the City of Sydney LGA, two-thirds of suburbs have positive ratings, headed by the unit markets in Sydney CBD, Surry Hills, Waterloo, Chippendale, Darlinghurst, Elizabeth Bay and Redfern – all rising markets. In the Canterbury-Bankstown LGA, which has recorded a steady rise in sales volumes over the past 18 months, 60% of locations have positive ratings, most of them unit markets. Those with rising sales activity include the unit markets in Bankstown, Belmore, Canterbury, Campsie, Lakemba and Wiley Park. The City of Parramatta fits this pattern also. Two-thirds of markets have positive ratings and 10 of the 13 ranked as rising are unit markets – headed by North Parramatta, Sydney Olympic Park, Toongabbie and Westmead. Top end municipalities that continue to pump strongly include the Woollahra LGA, where there have been steady increases in quarterly sales over the past 18 months. The apartment markets in Double Bay, Vaucluse and Edgecliff are all rising, while those in Rose Bay, Woollahra and Paddington have consistent buyer demand. The City of Randwick is also very consistent with its sales levels, boosted by rising activity in the unit markets of Kensington and Matraville, the house market in Randwick, and both houses and units in Maroubra. In the City of Waverley, another place with steady quarter-by-quarter sales, the leading locations with rising sales are the unit markets in Bondi, North Bondi, Bondi Junction and Waverley. In the outer-ring areas, the City of Penrith at the western fringe of Greater Sydney has recorded a recent upsurge in market activity and six out of ten markets have positive rankings. Rising locations include the house markets in Jamisontown, Kingswood, Penrith, St Marys and Werrington, as well as the unit markets in Colyton, Kingswood and St Clair. But the City of Liverpool is where house markets are doing best, amid a recent upturn in sales volumes – led by Green Valley, Moorebank, Prestons and Wattle Grove. The unit market in the central suburb of Liverpool is also notably strong.

Maggie Beer started her working life at the age of 14 in a chenille bedspread factory. Two decades later, in a pheasant farm in the Barossa Valley, she found her dream jobLegendary cook, author food producer and educator Maggie Beer grew up in Lakemba in South-West Sydney, and got her first job when she was 14.Maggie had to leave school early to go out to work to help support her family after her father's business went bankrupt.Although she had a varied working life over the next two decades, it wasn't until her mid-thirties that Maggie found her purpose.She and her husband Colin began a pheasant farm in South Australia's Barossa Valley, then added a farm gate shop and a restaurant.In the process, Maggie discovered that she loved to cook for people. For the first ten years they struggled to make the restaurant work financially, until a big award catapulted the business to fame.Eventually the hours and the demands became too much, and Maggie's husband Colin issued an ultimatum - it was him or the restaurant.Maggie chose her husband, and eventually began her media career writing newspaper columns, and then became a TV star on The Cook and the Chef and Masterchef.In 2010 Maggie was named the Senior Australian of the Year. Queerstories 2020 is a special series of the Queerstories podcast recorded during the lockdown months of 2020, featuring LGBTQI+ storytellers reflecting on the events of the year. Witt Gorrie is a white trans social worker who has worked alongside communities impacted by criminalisation for the past decade. They are currently based at Flat Out supporting survivors of family violence who have experienced criminalisation, duty failures and violence from police. They also provide outreach support to trans and gender diverse people incarcerated across Victorian prisons. Their writing on abolition has been published by the Guardian. Ahshanul Shourav came to Australia to study accounting, and discovered a love for cooking while he was here. With the help of his Mum he learned all the Bangladeshi staples from afar, and honed his skills on his flatmates. A year and a half ago he opened  Bottola restaurant in Lakemba. He learned on the job, and these days Bottola is bustling and busy-- serving up all the classics from Bangladesh.
