Public Support Grows for Luigi Mangione as He Awaits Trial in UnitedHealthcare CEO Murder Case Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel in December, continues to receive widespread public support. While political figures and mainstream media have condemned his alleged actions, a striking number of young Americans have expressed sympathy for him, with a recent poll showing that 81% of college students hold a negative view of Thompson. The murder has reignited debate over the U.S. healthcare system, which many argue prioritizes profits over people. A growing number of Americans report struggling with medical costs, with over half of U.S. adults saying they have difficulty affording healthcare and one in four stating that they or a family member have faced financial hardship due to medical expenses. Social media exploded with frustration after Thompson's death, with many sharing stories of denied claims and devastating medical debt. UnitedHealthcare has long faced accusations of putting corporate profits before patient well-being, and Thompson, as CEO, became the focal point of that anger. “We're tired of watching people die because they can't afford insulin or cancer treatments,” one viral post read. “UnitedHealthcare has blood on its hands.” Despite efforts by law enforcement and government officials to contain the conversation, support for Mangione has only grown. He is currently being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn without bond, awaiting trial. Yesterday, it was announced that a GiveSendGo fundraiser launched by the December 4 Legal Committee had raised nearly $300,000 for his defense. “We're thrilled that Luigi is accepting these funds so he can mount the strongest defense possible,” the committee stated. “The American private health insurance industry has ruined countless lives by denying people access to basic care and burying families in medical debt. It's no surprise that Luigi's alleged actions are understood and supported by tens of millions of hard-working Americans.” Reports have also surfaced that Mangione has been sharing his commissary funds with fellow inmates, a move that has only further solidified his status as a controversial but widely supported figure. Mangione faces an extensive list of charges in multiple jurisdictions, including New York, Pennsylvania, and federal court. In New York, he has been charged with first-degree murder in furtherance of terrorism, second-degree murder in furtherance of terrorism, and multiple weapons offenses. His federal charges include murder through the use of a firearm, two counts of stalking, and an additional firearm offense. If convicted on the federal firearm-related murder charge, Mangione could face the death penalty, following an executive order issued by President Trump, which mandates its use in applicable cases. While some view Mangione as a criminal, others see him as a symbol of growing dissatisfaction with a healthcare system that many believe has failed them. The U.S. government appears determined to make an example of him, sending a message that any disruption to the corporate-driven system will be met with severe consequences. Whether or not one agrees with Mangione's alleged actions, his case has undeniably forced a national conversation about healthcare justice and the limits of corporate power. His next court appearance in New York is scheduled for February 21. #HealthcareReform #UnitedHealthcare #JusticeForLuigi #MedicalDebtCrisis #HealthInsuranceScandal #SystemicFailure #LegalDefenseFund Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Speaker: Arman Sarvarian, University of SurreyDate: Friday Lunchtime Lecture: Friday 31 January 2025Dr Arman Sarvarian will speak about his forthcoming monograph The Law of State Succession: Principles and Practice to be published by Oxford University Press in April. The product of seven years' labour of approximately 170,000 words, the work includes a foreword by Professor August Reinisch of the University of Vienna and International Law Commission. The following is the summary of Oxford University Press:'The Law of State Succession: Principles and Practice provides a comprehensive, practical, and empirical overview of the topic, establishing State succession as a distinct field with a cohesive set of rules. From the secession of the United States of America in 1784 to that of South Sudan in 2011, the book digests and analyses State practice spanning more than two centuries. It is based on research into a wide and diverse range of case studies, including archival and previously unpublished data. Reconstructing the intellectual foundation of the field, the book offers a vision for its progressive development - one that is rooted in an interpretation of State practice that transcends the politics of the codification projects in the decolonization and desovietization eras. The book examines international law on State succession with respect to territorial rights and obligations, State property (including archives) and debt, treaties, international claims and responsibility, as well as nationality and private property (including concessions and investments). Its central focus is identifying the general rules of international law in order to guide States in the negotiation of succession agreements, the interpretation of ambiguous or incomplete provisions, and the regulation of succession in default of specific agreement.A highly relevant work, The Law of State Succession offers governments, judges, legal practitioners, and scholars an authoritative account of the current law. It enables negotiators to identify different legal paths within succession and assists adjudicators in interpreting provisions of succession agreements and regulating questions omitted from such agreements.' As the war in Gaza continues, it may seem the worst possible time to revisit the idea of a permanent political resolution of the wider Israeli-Palestinian conflict. US President Joe Biden however, says a two-state solution is still possible. So how realistic is that aspiration? If not two states, what alternatives are there and which country, if any, is trusted by both sides to broker a deal? Amidst the violence, is there any reason to hope? Shaun Ley is joined by: Anshel Pfeffer, an Israeli journalist based in Jerusalem who writes for the Economist and the Israeli newspaper Haaretz. Tahani Mustafa, who is British-Palestinian and a senior Palestine analyst at the International Crisis Group. Dennis Ross, who was Middle East Envoy in Clinton Administration and later served as Special Assistant to President Obama on his National Security Council. Also featuring: Danny Danon, Israeli member of the Knesset for the Likud party Hiba Husseini, former legal adviser to the Palestinian Liberation Organisation and current chair of the Legal Committee to Final Status Negotiations between the Palestinians and Israelis. From anti-discrimination provisions to access, the Americans with Disabilities Act represented a civil rights milestone at its enactment in 1990. We've now had 30 years to see how the act has empowered our communities and made them more inclusive. But we've also had 30 years to see where the act may have fallen short. In this episode, we’re joined by a lawyer who was 10 years into his legal career when the ADA was passed. It ushered in cases he pressed in labor and employment discrimination. Jay Hornack is now a Legal Committee member of Disability Rights Pennsylvania, a hearing officer for the Pennsylvania Office of Vocational Rehabilitation, and professor of disability discrimination law at the University of Pittsburgh's School of Law.
Produced at KSQD 90.7FM The Constitution is being strenuously tested. How is our Constitution being adhered to or challenged today? Or, is it just a quaint piece of paper as former AG Roberto Gonzales once stated? What are the impacts of the hostility between the president and a few Supreme Court judges who, like himself, are supposed to function as impartial judges and enforcers of the Constitution? Like the president himself, many executive roles have been manipulated to gain political advantage and powers expanded or contracted accordingly, but these certain governmental functions were intended to be above the fray. Also, as the President recently stated is he really the Chief Law Enforcement Officer of America? Are free speech rights under attack, or being abused? Interview Guests: Michelle (Mickey) Welsh, J.D., is a professor of Constitutional Law and Employment Law at Monterey College of Law with a legal expertise in employment, education and civil rights. She is a previous chair of the Northern California American Civil Liberties Union board of directors and has been an active member in the Monterey County chapter for 40 years. Currently, Mickey chairs their Legal Committee. In addition, Mickey is past chair of the Monterey County Women Lawyers Association and has served on numerous organization board of directors in Monterey County. Mike Rotkin is a former five-time mayor of the City of Santa Cruz and served six terms on the Santa Cruz City Council between 1979 and 2010. Mike retired after teaching 42 years in the Community Studies Dept. at UCSC, where he served as Director of the Field Studies Program. Mike was on the board of directors on the Santa Cruz chapter of the ACLU for several decades. And currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Coastal Watershed Council and the Democratic Women's Club of Santa Cruz County.
If you read or hear about a case alleging a violation of civil rights or civil liberties anywhere in the State of Alabama, chances are good that attorney Hank Sherrod is involved with the lawsuit. Hank’s office is located in Florence, Alabama but he handles civil rights, employment law and jail death cases throughout Alabama. Hank graduated with high honors from Birmingham-Southern College and then attended Vanderbilt University Law School where he served on the Vanderbilt Law Review and Order of the Coif. He is also a graduate of the Trial Lawyers College founded by legendary trial lawyer Gerry Spence. Following law school, Hank moved to Texas and worked there for a while before settling in Florence where he started a law practice that has allowed him to focus on the areas of law that he is really passionate about. Hank is a founding board member of the Alabama affiliate of the National Employment Lawyers Association and has served as its President. He has served on the board of the ACLU of Alabama since 2005 and currently serves on the Legal Committee. I have talked to Hank over the phone on a number of occasions over the years but this is the first opportunity that I have had to sit down with him face to face and learn about his story.
We are honoring William “Bill” Colwell with a teleforum on a topic we know he would love – the President’s power to approve – and revoke – security clearances. We will discuss recent media accounts of the President reportedly ordering the revocation of clearances of former government officials and insisting on other clearances being granted over the objections of senior government personnel. We will also – in true Federalist fashion – examine the historical wellsprings of each branch of government’s power to act within this realm. It is time to take a closer look at whether there are any practical limits on the Executive’s discretion, and whether Congress can and should play a stronger role. Bill Colwell was a great patriot and friend to many of us in the Federalist Society, and a pillar within the Washington D.C. legal community, but his appeal was by no means limited to one side of the aisle or to people with whom he agreed. As one recent description phrased it, Bill was “a beautiful mind of insatiable curiosity and creativity, a comedian who made us laugh until tears rolled down our faces, chef and mixologist par excellence.” Bill, a devoted and loving husband and father, was a man of great faith. Bill was Assistant General Counsel and Corporate Director of the Northrop Grumman Corporation. Prior to that, he was employed at The Boeing Company and Wiley, Rein & Fielding LLP. He served in the United States Navy as a nuclear submarine officer on the USS Hampton, where he received numerous awards. A nationally recognized expert in government contracts, Bill frequently spoke and published on procurement issues. He served on the Board of the Federal Circuit Bar Association, chaired the Legal Committee of the National Defense Industrial Association, and recently received the 2018 NDIA Howard H. Cork Memorial Award for exceptional service to NDIA and the defense industry. But beyond all professional interests, Bill loved his family and is mourned by his wife, Robin, their twin daughters and their extended families. We sit down with Walker Wallace, managing partner of O'Melveny's Shanghai office, to discuss how foreign tech companies should think about entering the China market. It's worth noting that most tech start-ups should not even consider China entry in the early days, as building up tech and achieving a focused product-market fit should be the only priority, and a premature obsession over China could very well be a huge distraction. But for companies that have built up a relatively sustainable business and are looking to scale, a thoughtful, well executed China strategy could create significant value. Today we discuss: what type of tech companies should consider entering the China market? What should their key considerations be before designing a market entry strategy? What are the different options and structures available? How do JVs work, and what is the value exchange between JV partners? Any other best practices to keep in mind? Walker J. Wallace is a leader in O'Melveny's China practice. He has extensive experience in international transactions and has worked with clients in a wide range of projects across Asia, from multi-nationals seeking to invest in China, to private equity funds pursuing investment strategies in Southeast Asia. In China, Walker has helped clients negotiate the complexities of investing and structuring business operations in numerous industries, including consumer products, healthcare, real estate, software, media and entertainment, retail and education. Walker has been working in the Shanghai office since 1997. He is the former Chairman of the Legal Committee for the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai, and is the co-author of “Acquisitions of Companies with Chinese Assets,” “Foreign Private Equity Investment in China: Which Way to the Exit?,” “Onshore Financial Investing in China,” and “Enforcement on Defaulted Loans and Mortgage on Real Property under Chinese Law.” Walker was named as a leading lawyer by Chambers Asia 2016/2017 under the categories “China, Corporate/M&A” and “China, Private Equity: Buyouts (International Firms)”. Walker earned his J.D. from Columbia University, and his B.A., cum laude from Williams College. He is admitted to the bar of New York.
