In this episode, Lisa and Annie discuss:The Disability Tax teens with physical disabilities and health conditions face as they begin their college journey. Differences in accommodations and support for your student college. How a college technically complying with federal law is different from being 100% accessible for all students and what your teen should consider. The adulting skills your student will need to learn regarding their health conditions.Key Takeaways: The ADA provides for reasonable accommodations. However, those can look different at different universities and colleges and even between programs at the same university or college. There is no perfect college for all students with similar disabilities. The right fit is the one the student chooses after having done the necessary research. Of the schools surveyed by United Spinal, only 16 colleges and universities were 100% physically accessible. Understanding the level of accessibility can be very important for your student and their needs. Manage your expectations - surprises will pop up in college. “The ADA, the Americans with Disabilities Act, also applies to the workplace. So when your student is seeking accommodations in college, that's a good training ground for thinking about what their needs might be later on once they graduate college and go into the workplace.” – Annie TulkinAbout Annie Tulkin: Annie Tulkin is the Founder and Director of Accessible College, as well as an educator, author and public speaker. She is an expert in the area of college preparation and transition for students with physical disabilities and health conditions. Annie was the Associate Director of the Academic Resource Center at Georgetown University for nearly 6 years. Annie has worked in the disability field for her entire professional career including positions as a Regional Disability Coordinator for Humanitas, Inc. working on the Job Corps disability support contract for The Department of Labor, and as a Project Specialist with the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) where she worked with both the National Service Inclusion Project (NSIP) and University Centers of Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD) Technical Assistance projects. Episode References:Accessible College partnership with the Reeve Foundation Navigating the Transition to College with ParalysisUnited Spinal: Wheels on Campus-20 wheelchair-friendly campuses guidePerkins School for the Blind-College Readiness Resource CenterHow Can Students with Health Conditions Successfully Navigate the College Transition?Job Accommodation NetworkGet Lisa's Free on-demand video: How-to guide for your teen to choose the right major, college, & career...(without painting themselves into a corner, missing crucial deadlines, or risking choices you both regret). https://flourishcoachingco.com/videoConnect with Annie:Website: accessiblecollege.com/ Twitter: twitter.com/AcssCollege Facebook: facebook.com/accessiblecollege Instagram: instagram.com/accessiblecollege/ LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/annietulkin-3b66b719/ Connect with Lisa:Website: https://www.flourishcoachingco.com/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@flourishcoachingcoInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/flourishcoachingco/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/flourish-coaching-co

As parents and caregivers, we put so much energy into helping our children become academically successful. We push for the right teachers, the right schools, and the right classes. What kind of skills do you find to be critical for us to instill in our children, regardless of their post-high school plans? Making sure our kids are prepared to succeed in school and beyond isn't just about academics, but also about preparing them to navigate the transition from high school to college successfully. Here, we'll talk about what constitutes the college gap and how you can help your kids bridge it with college prep activities that improve study skills, time management, and memory recall. Here are some things to consider as you listen to this episode:    Setting Them Up For Success - Boost Your Kid's Study Skills. The foundation of college success is built upon good study skills and is something we can be teaching our kids at an early age. Whether it's learning how to manage their time effectively, memorizing their class notes, or mastering test-taking techniques and exam preparation—the earlier we begin teaching these essential skills, the easier and smoother their transition will be from high school into college life.   Getting Them Ready For Adolescence: Start Early, Build a Strong Foundation and Encourage Creative Thinking. Some parents put off giving their children study skills until they reach high school – by then it's often too late. The longer you wait, the harder it is for kids to change entrenched habits of procrastination and disorganization. It's important to begin developing habits of good study behavior early so that these skills become second nature during high school.   Helping Them Manage Their Time: Parents often forget that their kids have a life outside of school and extracurricular activities. It's important that your child understands how to manage time effectively if they want their workloads, schoolwork, extracurricular activities, family time, and social life to balance properly. One way you can do that is by helping them develop study skills.  The following are some tips and tricks students should learn in order to maximize their learning potential throughout high school. Research Papers Are Often Too Long/Too Wordy: Teachers should specify page length; but more importantly, students need to understand that research papers aren't supposed to be a wiki-type experience where hundreds of sources are quoted verbatim with no analysis or commentary.   Providing Support on the Home Front: Tips on how to keep supporting your child even after you've given them all of your advice. Provide some tips on what parents can do to help their children through tough times, even when they're not there with them. Be sure that everything you say is positive and encouraging.   At SouthernSoulPodcast.com - Livestream Podcast & Music Hangout we cover a variety of topics, this show we're hosting a session for parents, high-school students, and families.    Links   Recommended by Dr. Rudy Jackson, Panel Moderator College Prep Professionals help parents navigate the college admission and scholarship process by helping students develop personal Success Traits that win competitions for college admission and scholarships. Instead, Noah enrolled at his dream school, the University of Georgia as a student. How did MLB Top 50 draft pick Matt Mikulski go from Fordham University to the big leagues? There is a tremendous amount of talent at all levels of baseball. You don't need to be a Division I player in a top conference, such as the ACC or SEC, to be noticed and ultimately, drafted to play professionally. My guest on this episode, Matt Mikulski, is a perfect example of this. He was recruited by Fordham as an undersized left-handed pitcher and ultimately, worked hard to develop into one of the best pitchers in America as a senior.Matt talks about how he has developed as a player and a person, and how his willingness to improve made him a top 50 pick in the 2021 Major League Baseball draft by the San Francisco Giants. What was your biggest takeaway from my conversation with Matt Mikulski? For me, it was that being humble and coachable can lead to long-term athletic success. Matt took his lumps as an undersized freshman recruit at a mid-major baseball program to become a top 50 Major League Baseball draft pick through hard work and the willingness to learn. Further, Matt stresses that the name on the front of the jersey isn't as important as the desire to be great and having confidence in yourself. My suggestion to high school student-athletes would be to have a long-term vision to fuel daily motivation to get better. Where you start is not remotely an indicator of where you can finish.I want to thank Matt for his kind generosity and the wisdom he shared with The Freshman Foundation Community. You can find Matt on Instagram @mattmik_44.You can learn more about The Freshman Foundation on our website at freshmanfoundation.com.Thank you for listening. How do college student-athletes find their way academically in their freshman year?Athletic departments across America have academic success teams that focus on bringing a vast array of resources to incoming freshmen in order to make their transition to as college seamless as possible. Divine Franklin is that person for Clemson University's football program, one of the two most successful programs in the United States over the past 10 years or so. In this episode, Divine talks about how Clemson has built a culture of academic excellence that aligns with its on-field performance. Divine also talks about the very real challenges freshmen student-athletes face despite having many academic resources at their disposal.Perhaps the biggest takeaway from this episode is that student-athletes would be wise to fully utilize ALL of the resources made available by their universities. Professionals like Divine Franklin are focused on ensuring that young men and women not only succeed on and off the field during their four years of college, but position themselves for success for 40 years after. My suggestion to high school student-athletes would be to understand all of the resources that are available to them BEFORE arriving on campus and have a plan to maximize use of those resources when they arrive on campus.I want to thank Divine for his kind generosity and the wisdom he shared with The Freshman Foundation Community. You can contact Divine on Twitter @divine_thought5 or at divinef@clemson.edu.You can learn more about The Freshman Foundation on our website at freshmanfoundation.com.Thank you for listening. Bill Burke on Beating Tom Brady, Playing for Nick Saban, and Learning Life Lessons Under CenterQuarterback is probably the single most important and difficult single position in team sports. The position demands athleticism, intelligence, poise, and elite decision-making skills. Those who excel at the position must be truly gifted and even so, it is not a guarantee of a professional career. My guest on this episode, Bill Burke, is a perfect example of this. Bill played quarterback at Michigan State University - my dear alma mater - from 1996 to 1999. During that time, Bill started at quarterback his final two seasons.Bill discusses some of his great wins, including beating #1 ranked Ohio State in 1998 and Tom Brady's highly ranked Michigan team in 1999. He also talks about playing for the legendary Nick Saban. Despite his success, he spent only one pre-season in the NFL demonstrating how difficult it is to play quarterback professionally.Bill has moved onto a successful professional life outside of football, including hosting The Dropbaq Podcast, where he interviews former quarterbacks about their experiences and life lessons playing the most difficult position in team sports. Bill followed a rocky path to Michigan State, put in the time and effort required to elevate himself to starting quarterback, and ultimately achieved great results through persistent hard work and sacrifice.Further, Bill has successfully applied the lessons learned on the field and in the quarterback room to his life after football. My suggestion to high school student-athletes would be to believe in yourself and remain patient in your athletic pursuits. While things may not always unfold the way you expect, the lessons learned through hard work and patience will last a lifetime.I want to thank Bill for his kind generosity and the wisdom he shared with The Freshman Foundation Community. You can learn more about Bill @dropbaq and dropbaq.com.You can learn more about The Freshman Foundation on our website at freshmanfoundation.com.Thank you for listening.
