A big part of dealing with legacy systems is not on the level of software architecture but interior design. The code needs to be welcoming for people who use it and maintain it, free of clutter, clean and tidy. Today we talk with Ester Daniel Ytterbrink. Ester Daniel is a coder who likes to think about how people work as a group to create great software sustainably. They have a blog (Chocolate Driven Development) where they write about software development with human interaction and psychology in focus. They tell us about the main principles of software interior design, guiding you to build more comfortable, functional, and efficient code. Key Points From This Episode: - Felix introduces himself and what he does as a game designer. - Felix explains what it means to be a game designer, using a door in a game as a metaphor, - Game development and how it parallels with user experience or user interface design. - How Felix strives towards guiding people through an optimal and less frustrating experience. - Felix explains what a AAA game is – they are the big-budget, summer blockbusters of games. - Hear more about what led Felix to game design. - Going into gaming, Felix had some programming knowledge from his HTML coding hobby. - How Felix leads a user to make certain decisions, from lighting and UI to manipulating time. - Felix defines affordances as what’s possible with an object as expressed through its design. - Felix outlines some examples of how game designers include prompts to guide players. - Restrictions and repetitions are introduced throughout a game to establish a design language and what the affordances are for the user. - Felix explains how he balances high intensity difficulty with ease of play through play testing. Tweetables: - “We have to constantly strive to make sure that people are being guided towards an optimal, not so frustrating experience. Unless we do want to frustrate them, in which case that's an entirely different design challenge. The goal is to make sure that anybody can play our games with the minimum amount of direct interference or touch on that”. — @uhfelix [0:05:07] “Games are this thing you just make up in [their] entirety. Down to the very weird, basic, physical elements, you can use all of them to influence people.” — @uhfelix [0:14:54] “Affordance is this concept of how does the design communicate its use to the user? In games, it’s very important because in the virtual world anything is possible. You want to be able to really limit the space of possibility within the player's mind, or else they'll be stuck. They’ll be at a loss as to what to do to progress, or move forward, or to accomplish goals.” — @uhfelix [0:17:57] “If you have a lot of focus on player experience, then that would lead you to integrate more player feedback into that process.” — @uhfelix [0:25:11] Links Mentioned in Today’s Episode: - Felix Park on Twitter (https://twitter.com/uhfelix) - Felix Park (http://www.felixpark.com/) - The Design of Everyday Things (https://www.amazon.com/Design-Everyday-Things-Revised-Expanded/dp/0465050654) - Enjoy the Vue on Twitter (https://twitter.com/enjoythevuecast?lang=en) - Enjoy the Vue (https://enjoythevue.io/) Special Guests: Felix Park and Ringo Kim.

Johanna Larsson is a community-minded software engineer whose project, Hex Diff, generates highlighted git diffs, right in your browser. In this episode, we talk to Johanna about how Hex Diff can benefit Elixir users, the differences between code architecture and code design, and the debatably under-appreciated role of Elixir umbrella apps. We start the conversation by chatting with Johanna about her recent move to London and her work for Duffel; a startup helping travel agencies book trips. After talking about how she got into software development, we dive into Hex Diff versus GitHub, with Joanna detailing how Hex Diff offers greater security for your code. We ask Johanna about the origins of the Hex Diff project and she explores its aims and her experiences working on the project. In line with this month’s theme, we discuss what architecture means to Joanna and the need for domain-driven design. We quiz Joanna on her approaches to problem-solving and she explains how her coding process emphasizes building an early prototype and constantly iterating on it. Despite hearing that umbrella apps are bad news, Joanna makes a case for their value while acknowledging how that they need greater tooling. We round off our conversation by asking Joanna how she tries to grow her skillset and what her favorite Elixir resource is. Following our discussion with Johanna, we open with another edition of Pattern Matching with Todd. This week, friend of the podcast Todd Resudek asks five questions of Elixir community member Bruce Williams. They talk about Bruce’s work as an Arabic cryptologic linguist for the US Airforce, his software career, and the therapeutic uses of playing Animal Crossing during a pandemic. Key Points From This Episode: We introduce Johanna Larsson and she shares how she is doing in London. How Johanna developed a love for software and how Elixir brought her to London. Details about Johanna’s job at Duffel; a startup that helps travel companies book trips. How Hex Diff is solving problems that arise when using code from GitHub. Johanna’s experience working on Hex Diff and the problems that they aim to solve. Hex Diff’s caching system and what Hex Diff does to counter malicious software uploads. The disconnect between system architecture and implementation. Johanna’s view on the differences between code design and code architecture. Why domain-driven design increases usefulness to the end-user. How Johanna approaches a problem and her steps when building code. Hear what key lesson Johanna learned from her latest big project. Johanna’s experience with umbrella apps and why they need tooling functions. How working in a strong team can motivate you and help grow your skill set. Why the Elixir Slack group is Johanna’s favorite tool. Why you should check out Hex Diff; it’s a great introduction to Elixir.
