"I have TMJ" - Yes, patient... you have two actually. If you are a practising dental clinician, chances are you've encountered patients with temporomandibular joint dysfunction - TMD. In Part 2 of this interview, Irene discusses this tricky disorder with Dr. Tony Urbanek, who specializes in its treatment using wearable custom-made devices. Why is it more prevalent in women than men? What makes it so controversial and difficult to treat? Is Botox an effective treatment, or is it all a scam? Tune in to find out what our surgical TMJ doc thinks about the Botox craze.  Dr. Anthony P. Urbanek DDS, MS, MD Tony is a double-degree Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon. He received his DDS and MS in Anatomy and Cell Biology from Indiana and his MD and internship/residency from Vanderbilt. While at Vanderbilt, he held a research fellowship with the National Institutes of Dental and Craniofacial Research, focusing on laser-induced intrauterine surgery and creating animal models with facial growth anomalies.  He has been in private practice in Nashville for the past 46 years, focusing on the most complex types of maxillofacial surgery.   During his long career he founded charity medical clinics in both Haiti and Jamaica  and is proud to have 54 years as a private pilot prompting many “hold my beer” moments.  Based on 10 years of research, he discovered the common denominator for TMJ/TMD and is now the president and CEO of TMJ Services which has developed  a network of doctors dedicated to the non-surgical solution for this devastating and very common disease.  Tony's greatest joy in life is spending time with his three grown children, six grandchildren, one great grandchild and his wife Ann.  For more information and to connect with Dr. Urbanek, check out his social media profiles: Instagram: @tmjservicesofbrentwood Website: https://www.urbanektmj.com/  YouTube and TMD Demystified Podcast: @urbanektmjdevice If you made it all the way down here, hit a like and share a comment. But how about running eight practices all at once?  Dr. Dylan Hyam is a specialist maxillofacial surgeon in Canberra, and along with his business partner, he also operates TMJ clinics around the country.  In this episode, Dylan and Jesse have a really wide ranging conversation with some great lessons around decision making, and how to make decisions that are effective over the long haul.  Dylan has a very deliberate and considered approach to both his life and his businesses, underpinned by a strong sense of values and principles. And one of those principles that Dylan holds above all else, the work must be good.  Now, we all know that as healthcare providers, we want to do great work that we're proud of, and what Dylan shares is his long term approach to building success in practice. Based on this value of doing great dentistry or great work. And he's also a really astute businessman and Dylan explains how he builds teams and his businesses to operate remotely from his headquarters in Canberra. And he's been able to instill great culture remotely.  So if you've ever wanted to own more, more than one practice, or even if you want to run your one practice much better this conversation with Dr. Dylan Hyam will help you. Dr. Dylan Hyam gained honours degrees in both Medicine and Dentistry from the University of Sydney. He began his career serving in the Royal Australian Army before taking up his first residency post at Westmead Hospital, Sydney.  A/Prof Hyam trained in Sydney, Canberra and the United Kingdom, in order to maximize his exposure to the management of complex maxillofacial patients.  In the United Kingdom he gained valuable training and experience in the management of head and neck cancer, orthognathic surgery, and complex bone grafting procedures. A/Prof Hyam is the Director of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Unit at The Canberra Hospital. He divides his time between both public and private practice.  A/Prof Hyam holds multiple appointments within the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons, relating to the provision of training to young surgeons. His appointment as Adjunct Associate Professor at the Charles Sturt Dental School allows for a continuum of education for undergraduate dental students. Based on this value of doing great dentistry or great work. And he's also a really, really astute businessman because what he talks about is how he builds teams and his businesses operate remotely from his headquarters. And he's been able to instill great culture remotely. So if you've ever wanted to own more, more than one practice, or even if you want to run your one practice much better this conversation with Dr. Dylan Hyam will help you. Why do humans have wisdom teeth if so many of them get removed soon after they appear?Wisdom teeth, the third molars in the back of our mouths, are so called because they normally appear in late teenage, early adulthood – the time in life we supposedly have learned some wisdom. But around 25% of people don't develop all four. Of those that do emerge, it is not uncommon for them to appear at nasty angles, jutting into the tooth next door causing potentially dangerous infections and pain. Because of this, for decades many people have them surgically removed. Listener Khaleel was preparing to have his remaining wisdom teeth removed when he wrote to CrowdScience to ask about them. Given that they can seem to cause more harm than good, why has evolution resulted in these troublesome teeth? But many people have perfectly uneventful relationships with their wisdom teeth, so have we perhaps removed more than we needed to over the years?Anand Jagatia chews it over with the help of surgeons and dentists to try to extract the truth – why DO we have wisdom teeth?Featuring: Tanya M Smith, Professor in the Australian Research Centre for Human Evolution at Griffith University, Australia Patrick Magennis, Consultant Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon at University Hospitals Aintree, Liverpool UK Verena Toedtling, Dentist and Specialist Oral Surgeon, UKPresented by Anand Jagatia Produced by Alex Mansfield

Welcome to the 141st episode of the Tooth or Dare Podcast with Irene Iancu! (@toothlife.irene) and this week's guest Dr. Ben Johnson aka @pnwoms.  Ben Johnson was inspired to go into oral surgery by his father, Dr. Carl Johnson, and their lifelong friend and colleague, Dr. Rick Edwards. He saw the differences they were able to make in patients' lives and wanted to be able to do the same. Now, Dr. Ben works with his father on a daily basis and feels extremely lucky for the opportunity. He shares a similar philosophy with the other oral surgeons at Pacific Northwest Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons regarding patient care and satisfaction, which centers on providing highly focused, patient-centered treatment. Dr. Ben strives to treat every patient like they are a part of the family. He understands that coming into the office for oral surgery can be a potentially anxious process, and he works hard to make each patient's experience as comfortable as possible. Dr. Ben enjoys practicing oral surgery because it provides him with the opportunity to improve patients' lives. In this conversation with Dr. Ben Johnson, we chat about the profession of oral surgery, where he went to school, where he grew up and how Ben got to where he is today.   In the world of dentistry, is it perceived as a heavy-handed, “rough-and-tumble” specialty, or is it actually a delicate skill that requires creativity?   Dr. Ben is the kind of person who “likes to be bored at work” - if you call a routine wisdom teeth extraction boring. He shares his wealth of experience as an oral surgeon through stories of bone grafts and implant failures. Hang on to your suction - if you haven't seen his Instagram feed, be warned because he is NOT afraid to share all the juicy details of a procedure.   Above all, Dr. Ben cares about his patients - getting them a good outcome, making sure they're comfortable, and being transparent about his practices. His contribution to dentistry doesn't stop at his patients though. Dr. Ben is also behind the Dental Influencers Alliance (DIA), a network of professionals who promote education and positive dental practices through an annual conference. Learn more about DIA and where it's happening next in this episode!   For more information and to connect with Dr. Ben, check out his social media profiles: LinkedIn: Ben Johnson https://www.linkedin.com/in/benreedjohnson/  Instagram: @pnwoms Art by Ben's twin  sister: https://www.jennyvorwaller.com/     Dental Influencers Alliance: https://www.influencedentistry.com/ Irene will be speaking again this year at DIA from April 25th-27th Come and check it out in Dallas!    If you made it all the way down here, hit a like and share a comment. In the world of anesthesia, Articaine is a product riddled with controversy. Whilst recent studies have proved that Articaine is relatively safe to use, many are still skeptical due to the previous narrative that Articaine has a higher chance of causing paralysis than Lidocaine and other anesthetics. So today, we sit down with Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, Dr. Ben Hechler, to get to the bottom of Articaine's safety by unpacking a few studies that were published in the last five years.  Our first study denotes that on an absolute scale, Articaine is not riskier to use than Lidocaine, and Dr. Ben explains why he agrees wholeheartedly. We also discuss anesthetic efficiency and discover that, once again, there is little to separate Articaine and Lidocaine. To end, both our host and guest detail how they use Articaine in their practices and Dr. Ben explains why every oral surgeon should be embracing Articaine instead of running away from it.Key Points From This Episode:Why we've chosen to speak about Articaine and we dive into our first case study. Dr. Ben explains what he likes about the study in question. How there's no definitive proof that Articaine causes paralysis more than Lidocaine. The second article that we discuss explores anesthetic efficiency. How Articaine is slightly more effective than Lidocaine (within certain parameters). The way Doctors Ben and Grant use Articaine in their practices. Why Articaine should be embraced by all oral surgeons. Links Mentioned in Today's Episode:Dr. Ben Hechler on LinkedIn — https://www.linkedin.com/in/ben-hechler/   ‘Does the Use of Articaine Increase the Risk of Hypesthesia in Lower Third Molar Surgery? Seeing the devastating and deadly effects of marijuana in his patients, family, and friends, Dr. Raymond Wiggins began investigating the subject, and what he found shocked him. His search for answers revealed an overwhelming body of evidence showing the adverse effects of marijuana. Soon, he found he was not alone. As people learned of his quest, many had similar stories of friends and family who had suffered harm or died from this drug. The stories are heartbreaking. Every story is fuel on a fire that cannot be quenched. This investigation has now become a passion to bust marijuana myths and spread the truth about this dangerous drug. He believes if he saves one life, it is worth the effort. His mission is to save as many people as possible from the physical, mental, and spiritual ravages of this drug. Dr. Wiggins has studied the subject of marijuana for many years, examining the subject from both medical and biblical perspectives. He has the expertise to evaluate the mountains of information about marijuana, weed out the lies, and present the truth about the subject in an understandable, informative, persuasive, and engaging manner. Dr. Wiggins has earned over five hundred college credit hours, most in biological and medical sciences and most at the graduate and doctoral levels. He has two doctorates—a DDS from Texas A & M School of Dentistry and an MD from McGovern Medical School. When he saw the specs, he was sold.In this episode of the Prosperous Doc®, our host Shane Tenny, CFP® welcomes Dr. Carlos M. Moretta to discuss his medical missionary work, the way his worldview has changed, what inspires him to continue his work, and why he encourages others to take part in a medical mission.Tune in to hear some stories from Dr. Moretta's most memorable missions and what he learned along the way.
