Tune in to learn how to make mindful choices to protect your hormonal health and overall well-being. www.alidamron.com www.alidamron.com/consults www.alidamron.com/heal www.alidamron.com/period www.instagram.com/alidamron Facebook Group: www.facebook.com/groups/alidamron
https://www.drstevenlin.com/bpa-microplastics-affect-hormones/You may have seen the term on labels such as “BPA-free.” Should you be concerned about BPA and other microplastics? There is a growing body of evidence that microplastics can mimic and interfere with the production of sex hormones, for example. Bisphenol-A (BPA) is an industrial chemical used in plastics manufacturing and added to many commercial products, including food containers, baby bottles, plastic water bottles, hygiene, and even dental products. It has been used since the 1960s to produce strong and resilient plastics for food packaging and home kitchen use.To discuss the potential affects of microplastics is Dr. Anthony Jay. Author of the book, “Estrogeneration”, he is a double major in Biology and Theology from Ave Maria University in Naples, Florida, where he researched HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) inhibitors. Dr. Jay earned his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Boston University School of Medicine, researching fats, hormones, and cholesterol. Dr. Jay has also worked for 3 years as a scientific researcher at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, researching stem cells, epigenetics, and infrared light.
The adverse health effects of plastic chemicals have been known by scientists for decades. Phthalates and Bisphenol A (BPA) are perhaps the most infamous unsafe plastic chemicals, but there are hundreds more that pose equally as dangerous - if not greater - health risks. The dirty secrets of the plastics industry have been swept under the rug for almost a hundred years, but today we expose them for what they are. Join us in this episode to learn why BPA-free and phthalate-free "safe" alternative plastic products may pose a threat to your health, what the consequences of their use might be, and how you can protect yourself, and your family, from harm. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/elanie-welch/support

ADHD is a rising diagnosis in our society. Tune in to learn more about the possible causes hidden at the root of ADHD, including heavy metals.Every day we are exposed to toxins from our environment. We may ingest lead and copper from drinking water, phosphate from processed food and soda, various synthetic chemicals from plastic food containers, and pesticides from fruits and vegetables. Both natural heavy metals and man-made chemicals disrupt hormones and brain development. The brain, especially the developing brain, is very vulnerable to contaminants because of its large size and its high concentration of fats which serve as a reservoir for toxicants to build up. This episode will explain the role that heavy metals and environmental toxins play in ADHD.In January 2016, there was a declared state of emergency in Flint, Michigan where thousands of residents were exposed to high levels of lead in their drinking water. The corrosive water from the Flint River caused lead from old water pipes to leach into the water supply, putting up to 12,000 children at risk of consuming dangerous levels of lead. Lead poisoning can cause irreversible brain damage and even death, and growing children are especially susceptible to its poisonous effects. Even low blood lead levels reduce IQ, the ability to pay attention, motor function, and academic achievement.Since lead poisoning causes cognitive, motor, and behavioral changes, it is not surprising that it also causes ADHD. Lead exposure is estimated to account for 290,000 excess cases of ADHD in US children (Braun et al., 2006). A study on 270 mother-child pairs in Belgium found that doubling prenatal lead exposure (measured in cord blood) was associated with a more than three times higher risk for hyperactivity in boys and girls at age 7-8 (Sioen et al., 2013). A larger study on almost 5,000 US children aged 4-15 found children with the highest blood lead levels were over four times as likely to have ADHD as children with the lowest blood lead levels (Braun et al., 2006).MRI scans from participants of the Cincinnati Lead Study had striking results: childhood lead exposure was associated with brain volume loss in adulthood. Individuals with higher blood lead levels as children had less gray matter in some brain areas. The main brain region affected was the prefrontal cortex which is responsible for executive function, behavioral regulation, and fine motor control (Cecil et al., 2008).Copper is an essential trace mineral we must consume from our food supply. It is found in oysters and other shellfish, whole grains, beans, nuts, and potatoes. Like lead, copper can leach into the water supply when copper pipes corrode. One of copper's roles in the body is to help produce dopamine, the neurotransmitter that provides alertness. However, too much copper creates an excess of dopamine leading to an excess of the neurotransmitter norepinephrine. High levels of these neurotransmitters lead to symptoms similar to ADHD symptoms: hyperactivity, impulsivity, agitation, irritability, and aggressiveness. In children with excess copper, stimulant medications don't work as well and tend to cause side effects (agitation, anxiousness, change in sleep and appetite). Most ADHD medications work by increasing levels of dopamine, intensifying the effects of excess copper. In addition, excess copper blocks the production of serotonin, a mood-balancing neurotransmitter. This triggers emotional, mental, and behavioral problems, from depression and anxiety to paranoia and psychosis. The neurotoxic effects of excess copper are well known and a few studies have assessed copper's role in ADHD symptoms. When researchers compared copper levels in 58 ADHD children to levels in 50 control children, they observed that copper levels were higher in ADHD children. ADHD children also had a higher copper-to-zinc ratio that positively correlated with teacher-rated inattention Now let's move into Phosphate. Phosphate is a charged particle (an electrolyte) that contains phosphorus. Phosphorus is the second most abundant mineral in the body (the first is calcium). Phosphorus is a building block for bones and about 85% of total body phosphorus is found in the bones. Deficiencies are rare because phosphorus is naturally abundant in protein-rich foods like meat, poultry, fish, eggs, milk, and milk products as well as in nuts, legumes, cereals, and grains. Although phosphorus is an essential nutrient, too much can be problematic. The phosphate content of processed foods is much higher than that of natural foods because phosphates are commonly used as additives and preservatives in food production. Our daily intake of phosphate food additives has more than doubled since the 1990's (Ritz et al., 2012). Phosphorus, especially the form found in processed meats, canned fish, baked goods, and soda is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream so levels can rise rapidly.Phosphorus reduces the absorption of other vital nutrients, many of which ADHD children are deficient in to begin with. For instance, too much phosphorus can lower calcium levels. High phosphorus coupled with low calcium intake leads to poor bone health. The typical American diet contains two to four times more phosphorus than calcium and soda is often a major contributor to this imbalance. In the body, phosphorus and magnesium bind together, making both minerals unavailable for absorption. This is most apparent when magnesium consumption is low and intake of phosphorus is high. Researchers have found that adding Pepsi to men's diet for two consecutive days causes their blood phosphate levels to increase and their magnesium excretion to decrease (Weiss et al., 1992).In the 1990's, German pharmacist Hertha Hafer discovered that excess dietary phosphate triggered her son's ADHD symptoms. In her book, The Hidden Drug, Dietary Phosphate: Cause of Behavior Problems, Learning Difficulties and Juvenile Delinquency, she presents a low phosphate diet as a treatment for ADHD. A low phosphate diet led to dramatic improvements in her son's behavior, well-being, and school performance, rendering medication unnecessary. Her family's ADHD problem was resolved and her son had no further problems as long as he avoided high phosphate foods. Hafer finds that children with mild ADHD can improve simply by removing processed meats and phosphate-containing beverages like soda and sports drinks from their diets (Waterhouse, 2008).Everyday plastic products contain hormone-disrupting chemicals, such as Bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalates, that can migrate into our body and affect the brain and nervous system. These environmental toxins bind to zinc and deplete zinc levels in the body. Phthalates are synthetic chemicals used to make plastics soft and flexible. Phthalates are used in hundreds of consumer products and humans are exposed to them daily through air, water, and food. Multiple studies have linked phthalates with ADHD. Researchers assessed the urine phthalate concentrations and ADHD symptoms ADHD symptoms (inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity), rated by the children's teachers, were significantly associated with phthalate metabolites (breakdown products) (Kim et al., 2009).Prenatal phthalate exposure is associated with problems in childhood behavior and executive functioning. Third-trimester urines from 188 pregnant women were collected and analyzed for phthalate metabolites. Their children were assessed for cognitive and behavioral development between the ages of 4 and 9. Phthalate metabolites were associated with worse aggression, conduct problems, attention problems, depression, externalizing problems, and emotional control (Engel et al., 2010).In addition to heavy metals and plasticizers, pesticides can cause ADHD symptoms. The American Academy of Pediatrics notes, “Children encounter pesticides daily in air, food, dust, and soil. For many children, diet may be the most influential source. Studies link early-life exposure to organophosphate insecticides with reductions in IQ and abnormal behaviors associated with ADHD and autism” (Roberts & Karr, 2012).Among pesticides, insecticides may be the most harmful to humans. Insecticides were first developed during World War II as nerve gases. They work by targeting and destroying, an enzyme that controls the neurotransmitter acetylcholine which plays a role in attention, learning, and short-term memory. Even organophosphate exposure at low levels common among US children may contribute to ADHD prevalence. Researchers at Harvard University studied more than 1,000 children aged 8-15 from the general population and found that those with detectable urinary levels of an OP metabolite were nearly twice as likely to be diagnosed with ADHD (Bouchard et al., 2010).Source: JAMES GREENBLATT, MD REFERENCES:Braun et al (2006). Episode 013: An action plan for getting the most out of The PTSD Blueprint. See, this is the last podcast in The PTSD Blueprint and now you know just how complex PTSD issues can be. In the last episode you can see how Endocannabinoid Receptor Deficiency burns out the body system and makes people susceptible to suffering the symptoms. In this episode, we'll look at the toxins, nutrition, exercise and environmental stressors that can all affect PTSD. The worst-case scenario occurs when an increasing number of dimensions are struggling at the same time. For example, physical pain, anxiety, insomnia, loneliness, and guilt. Combinations of symptoms like this affect the physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional dimensions. The PTSD survivor feels like there is no where they can turn to get relief. Now that you've gotten through The PTSD Blueprint, you can see how puzzling it is for people. We should probably marvel that our PTSD therapies work at all. That they do work, highlights only how resilient people are and not necessarily how bright psychologists and psychiatrists have treated trauma wounds over the years. The PTSD Detox Now that you've listened to the first 13 podcasts, downloaded The PTSD Blueprint, you're ready to put it into action using the PTSD Academy 100-Day Detox Challenge. The premise is simple, take specific actions in each of the four dimensions of self: physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional. Imagine how good you will feel if you not only exercise your physical body for 100 days in a row, but also your mind, emotions, and spirit. Rules for the 100-Day Challenge Do at least one item for each of the 4 categories per day, for 100 days. Put your own spin on it - after all, it's your plan to get better. After 100 exercise repetitions per day for 100 days, you will have done 10,000 repetitions! Toxins in the food supply Our bodies are made to be integrated with nature, not inside climate-controlled, man-made boxes with unnatural light that doesn't have the full spectrum. It's been well documented that the food supply has artificial, man-made ingredients that are not recognized or are downright toxic to the gut. This triggers an inflammatory response that directly affects brain health and mental health problems. When health nutrition is supplied, depression improves, so I would expect it to also help PTSD. Water and food are packaged, processed, and delivered while in contact with plastic. Plastic leaches out toxic chemicals, worse under heat. Bisphenol-A (BPA) is one of the chemicals that come off the plastic. This is why people say don't drink water out of plastic bottles that have set out in the heat. Many companies are now offering BPA-free plastics, but BPA is only one of many chemicals that leach off the plastic. Dental root canals can mimic PTSD symptoms I watched a scary documentary called Root Cause that made a convincing case about the danger of leaving dead tooth tissue inside the root that gets left behind. Botulinum toxin, the same toxin that is injected to make nerves die and causes rigor mortis, gets released slowly from the old, dead nerve root tissue. Just like medications and food preservatives, toxins entering the body are monitored, arrested, and destroyed by the immune system. The complexity of the biochemistry of an inflammatory response leads to what can be thought of as a final common pathway for disease: inflammation, swelling, weight gain, decreased immune response with increased propensity to get infections, insomnia from the cortisol, cognitive clouding, and increased perception of pain. When you start feeling like this it becomes very difficult to maintain self-care, so the medical problems can really start piling up. Environmental stressors that impact PTSD Our earth has become toxic. Many believe we are witnessing our last days on earth as we know it. Our food and water are contaminated. Oh, and it turns out that cell phone signals are actually bad for you and,

Is BPA as bad as it seems? I’ll let you decide.
We're learning more and more that health isn’t just about diet and exercise. We’re now hearing, more than ever before, on how toxins in consumer products that we use every day, inside of our homes and on our bodies contain harmful ingredients that damaging our health. They can cause confusion in our bodies, inflammation and wreak havoc on our hormones. In this episode, I’m sharing seven safer and practical choices that you can start making TODAY to detox your home and reduce your exposure to harmful toxins, specifically phthalates, Bisphenol-A (BPA) and PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid). Steaming Things in Platic Bags - Is It Safe? Jillian Michaels talks about how she absolutely refused to promote steam fresh products on the biggest loser as she wouldn't promote anything that promoted steaming in a plastic bag. What's the big deal? It comes down to BPA which stands for bisphenol A. BPA is an industrial chemical that has been used to make certain plastics and resins since the 1960s. No, you can read that according to the Mayo Clinic that, "the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has said that BPA is safe at the very low levels that occur in some foods. This assessment is based on a review of hundreds of studies." For me, I don't believe a single word out of the FDA as every documentary I've ever seen shows how corrupt that government agency is. According to Livstrong.com, "These bags are sold with the vegetables inside and as stand-alone products. In general, microwaving foods in plastic containers may carry some health risks due to the transmission of BPA and pthalates from the plastic to the food. However, the bags specifically manufactured for use in microwave steaming do not contain BPA or pthalates. Further, many other types of plastic containers on the market today are safe for microwave use. Still, you should use steam bags as described by the manufacturer and not reuse them for other purposes." For me, I don't like the word, "MAY" as it may carry some health risks. To me, health risks is a yes/no question. If someone said, "May cause death, or may cause pregnancy" I'm not going to go down that path. Many of the above articles mention an article from Good Housekeeping that states their studies show very little trace. It also states, "Many hadn't heard of bisphenol A before it grabbed the headlines earlier this year, but the chemical has been in our lives for decades" To this I ask, "So the fact that we've had a potentially bad chemical in our lives for years makes it ok to keep it?" What's the big deal with BPA anyway, "BPA and phthalates are what are known as endocrine disruptors — chemicals that can interfere with our hormone systems, mimicking, shutting down, or modifying the chemical signals that regulate everything from metabolism and reproduction to our bodies' response to stress." source The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, part of the National Institutes of Health, advises against microwaving polycarbonate plastics or putting them in the dishwasher, because the plastic may break down over time and allow BPA to leach into foods. source BPA - Who Cares? Some things that have been tied to BPA include: Lower sperm counts and other reproductive abnormalities Early puberty Cancer Obesity and diabetes Neurobehavioral abnormalities My First Experience With a Steamer Basket So I purchased a steamer basket that pretty much fits in any pot see http://amzn.to/2H2CufB. I bought a head of cauliflower ($3) and put an inch of water into a pan, and turned the heat on high. I washed the cauliflower and broke it up, and by that time the water was boiling. I put in the basket, through the cauliflower in and set a time for 5 minutes. It came out perfect. The only struggle is getting the basket out and getting the cauliflower into my bowl. While you can grab the handle and pull it out, I opted to put on my Hot Hands (silicone heat resistant gloves) and picked up the basket via the handle and then carried the basket to my bowl and just dumped it in. (I LOVE my Hot Hands). The head of cauliflower will be the same as two bags of cauliflower (without the added spices and salt) and I avoid plastic. I do end up with a pot that needs cleaning (in a way, if you consider bowling water a dirty dish). Consider Yourself Nudged If you are a regular listener/reader, you know I've been gone over the last few weeks. I've been to Orlando for a podcasting event, and then out to San Diego for a Social Media Event. In February I kept telling myself, "When I get back from San Diego" I will refocus on my health. I wasn't off the rails, but the exercise routine was moved down the priority. Well, now I'm back. Am I a liar? No. Then I guess I better hit the treadmill. I did. I guess I better eat right (see above). I'm cooking healthy options as I write this. The bottom line is we all often put lines in the dirt. Our favorite line is "tomorrow" and we all know it never comes. When it comes time to put up or shut up, you know you can do this. Take that first step. I met a woman in San Diego. We had met a few times at different events. She's really a target customer for me as she really should start a podcast. When I met her again I was informed she had indeed started a podcast after buying a competitors product that cost multiple times more than mine. Why did she go to the competitor? He challenged her to start a podcast. With this in mind, I challenge you to take your health more seriously. I challenge you to plan your next meal. I challenge you to block off times where you can exercise. My New Why For new people to the podcast/blog, I've been divorced for two years. I'm really not interested in starting a relationship, and to a certain extent thought "that part" of my heart may be dead. My ex-wife really took a toll on my self-esteem, and left me with what my friend Rany Cantrell from Leaning Toward Wisdom calls, "Head Trash." Well over the last few events, low and behold I still find a woman attractive, and low and behold actually found the strength to talk to a few. My game is very, very, rusty and it took a lot of courage and stepping out of my comfort zone, but in the end, I ended up with what amounted to a schoolboy crush on one woman. As these events are much like summer camp, I'm logical enough (hence the name of the show) to know the difference between a crush and legitimate feelings. With the new "Hey my heart still works" mentality I did think ahead to the future. If I am ever to be naked in front of a human being again, I need to take some steps. If I'm going to attract a woman with something besides my wit and charm, I'm going to need to take some steps. I'm going to need to change my lifestyle. We all have different a "Why." Maybe you want to be there to see your grandchildren get married, or be there for your kids, or maybe you're just sick and tired of being sick and tired. For me, this new motivation is working. It may not work forever, but it's working now and as the old saying goes, "If it ain't broke don't fix it." So figure out you're why, and on those days that you don't want to exercise, or you're really craving some bad food, think back to your why. Are you noticing that perfumes bother you more as you age? You’re not alone. A recent study of 17 high-end perfumes showed that on average, each contained 17 unidentified chemicals, including toxins such as hormone disruptors. For women, removing toxins from our environment and products becomes critical after age 40 because of one word: hormones.Starting at age 35, our ovaries begin to decline in function. By age 40, our adrenal glands are starting to take over the production of female sex hormones from the ovaries. Because our adrenal glands are working to pump out hormones, they become fatigued and we experience chemical sensitivity and increased allergies. It’s not just women, men with adrenal fatigue also experience this reaction to toxins but for women, our drop in hormones occurs more suddenly due to menopause.Women start entering peri-menopause in our early forties and are menopausal - with cessation of periods - by age 51. During peri-menopause, our bodies start acting differently because our ovaries are working hard to push eggs out, and we begin having hormonal drops and surges that we only had as teenagers. The difference being that as teens, our hormones were fluxing up while in peri-menopause our hormones are fluxing down. The introduction of toxins into our bodies will worsen this hormonal fluctuation and increase our sensitivities and allergies. As we get older, natural becomes a “must,” not a “nice-to-have.” The top 3 common toxins found in our homes are: 1. Phthalates - these are typically parabens that are hormone disruptors and are used in preservatives in personal care products, 2. Bisphenol A (BPA) - is also a hormone disruptor and is found in plastics and linings of tins, and 3. Formaldehyde - is a carcinogen that can even be found in vinyl flooring.Removing key chemicals from our lives will help reduce stress on our adrenal glands and also reduce the disruption of our hormones that are already fluctuating due to peri-menopause. So, in this instance, talking dirty can clean up our lives and create better health as we age.air date: 5/2/17

There are many different ways that our hormones can become imbalanced. Endocrine disruptors, nutrient deficiencies, stress and the use of anabolic steroids, which can cause permanent irreversible damage. All these can cause Low Natural Testosterone-Low T. A simple overview on how our body produces Testosterone in the testes is as follows. It starts in the brain. The hypothalamus in the brain releases Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone (GnRH). Underneath the hypothalamus is the pituitary and the GnRH causes the front portion called the anterior pituitary to release Luteinizing Hormone (LH). This Luteinizing Hormone then travels to the testes and causes them to release Testosterone. This whole system is self-regulating. When Testosterone is at the right level it creates a feedback to the hypothalamus to stop releasing GnRH. This means less LH is released and then testicular production of Testosterone is reduced. This is called negative feedback or feedback inhibition. If the Testosterone level is too low then GnRH is stimulated for release, which increases LH, which then increases testicular production of Testosterone. The causes of hormone depletion can occur any where along the entire cascade pathway just described. Dr. Seik learned a lot from Dr. Edward Lichten, who lectures on what a dramatic effect that endocrine disrupting chemicals (environmental toxins that disrupt our endocrine system) have on our HPGA Axis. HPGA stands for Hypothalamic Pituitary Adrenal Gonadal Axis. Many of these endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are very similar to Estrogen, such as Dioxin and Bisphenol A (BPA) from plastics. There are thousands of chemicals in our environment, toiletries, cosmetics, cleaners and housing materials that we are exposed to on a daily basis. Since 1975 till today, the average sperm count in men has reduced by 50% and this coincides with hormone decline. EDCs are at fault. These EDCs that act like Estrogen can mimic and inhibit the release of hormones causing an imbalance in the body. Another factor that can disrupt our hormones is stress. Stress can actually cause hypogonadism, where the testicles are not producing enough testosterone. There are many different kinds of stress that can cause this such as emotional stress, physical stress from environmental toxins and there is also overtraining stress that you find in athletes that leads to exercise-induced hypogonadism. One of the most prevalent of the endocrine disrupting chemicals is Anabolic Steroids. They are typically synthetic chemicals, which means they are not structures made by the human body. There can be prescription anabolic steroids, which have a good therapeutic application, but there are an enormous amount of advertisements in magazines that offer quasi-steroids, or knock-off molecules that are very similar to testosterone. Many athletes are looking for the benefits that testosterone offers, like building muscle, increased strength, energy and increased workout production. The problem with these chemicals is that there is not a good way to test for the presence of all of them in the blood and there is also not enough knowledge on the effects that these quasi-steroids have on the system because they do not act the same way that testosterone does. They can cause a permanent malfunction of the HPGA Axis. Another example of how delicate this system is with regards to nutrient deficiency is how Zinc deficiency can decrease Testosterone. Zinc acts in many different ways. It is needed for the production of Testosterone and it prevents the conversion of Testosterone to Estrogen by inhibiting the aromatase enzyme. Why this is important is because Estrogen is a very strong inhibitor of LH. So, if you don't have zinc then you have Testosterone conversion to Estrogen and then Estrogen inhibits the release of LH, which then means the testicles are not going to be producing as much Testosterone. Now think about this in regards to chemicals in our environment that mimic Estrogen and you can see how they can cause lowered Testosterone levels. by Robert Seik, PharmD
The Mind Renewed : Thinking Christianly in a New World Order
Our guest this week is Dr. Frederick vom Saal, Curators' Professor in the Division of Biological Sciences at the University of Missouri-Columbia, who joins us to discuss the substance bisphenol A (or BPA), and to share with us his serious concerns about its impact upon human health. A component of many of the plastics we use every day, and commonly to be found in products as diverse as computer casings, tooth sealants, canned food linings and even thermal paper till receipts, BPA is used in vast quantities across the globe, and widely considered to be safe by regulating authorities. But, as Dr. vom Saal explains, mounting research is increasingly implicating BPA as a likely significant contributor to a wide array of human health and fertility problems. Dr. vom Saal also explains how the chemical industry continues to resist these findings by hiding behind outdated principles of toxicology, and shares with us how we can modify our lifestyles to begin reducing our levels of BPA. Senator Dianne Feinstein, Member, United States Senate (D-CA) In conversation with Greg Dalton, Founder of Climate One at The Commonwealth Club In this Climate One conversation at the Mark Hopkins Hotel, in San Francisco, Senator Dianne Feinstein touches on some longtime pursuits – national security experience and protecting the California desert from development. She also pledges to investigate the safety of the US nuclear fleet, protect children from toxins, and continue to shield California’s coastline from oil drilling. Feinstein is clear that clean energy is California’s future. “Energy is the largest source of new jobs for this state,” she says, citing an estimate placing the number at 100,000 additional jobs. Those new energy jobs – such as building large solar thermal power plants – should not be located, however, in the state’s undeveloped desert. “There is plenty of land in the desert that is disturbed that can be used. I think all of these [solar] companies are essentially finding other places to build, where there is no real environmental challenge to things that are endangered like desert tortoises,” says Feinstein. A trickier problem, especially in the wake of the disaster at the Fukushima nuclear complex, is how to ensure the safety of, and store spent fuel from, America’s nuclear reactors. Insufficient attention has been paid to the full nuclear fuel cycle, Feinstein says. “I believe very strongly that we need either regional or centralized nuclear fuel storage. It’s asking for trouble to keep hot rods in spent pools for decades and dry casks right along the side of nuclear reactors. I think they should be moved right away.” She also pledges quick action on plant safety. “I’m going to try to push as far and as fast as I can push to see that we really take a good look, a real examination, of all the facilities,” says Feinstein. Feinstein warns against the danger posed by exposure to chemicals, especially for infants. Of particular concern is Bisphenol A (BPA), a known endocrine disruptor, which, she says, is added to the inside of canned goods and baby bottles. “I become very interested in chemicals that are added that we know very little about,” says Feinstein. Though a proponent of greater energy efficiency (in the Q&A, Feinstein cites her decades-long quest to boost fuel efficiency standards for new vehicles as her proudest Senate achievement) Feinstein says now is not the time to raise the gas tax. “I’d go slowly on that. We have very long commutes for workers in this state,” she says. “This is not the time, when gasoline is this high, with the nation trying to pull itself out of recession. We need to keep gasoline below the $4 mark right now,” Feinstein says. She blamed speculators for the high prices: “Demand is down, and supply is even – so what can it be?” She reaffirms that oil companies should not look to California’s coast for additional supply. “The people of California have spoken through initiative. They don’t want oil drilling off the coast.” This program was recorded in front of a live audience at The Commonwealth Club in San Francisco on April 27, 2011
Bisphenol A (BPA) is used in a wide variety of consumer products, and biomonitoring studies indicate widespread exposure to the compound. Much of the hesitation to regulate BPA up to now has stemmed from uncertainty about whether health effects reported in laboratory animals—which include heart disease, obesity, diabetes, reproductive health problems, and several types of cancer—can be extrapolated to humans. In this podcast, Frederick vom Saal discusses recent findings that suggest mice, rhesus monkeys, and humans metabolize BPA at similar rates, raising the possibility that effects observed in animal models may be relevant to humans as well. vom Saal is a Curator’s Professor of biology at the University of Missouri. Guest: Retha Newbold, PhD Host: Jim Keany, MD Found in everything from baby bottles to contact lenses, to tooth sealants and soda can linings, bisphenol A (BPA) is a chemical used to make plastics more resilient. It is also a recognized hormone disrupter, with recent studies raising concerns about a potential link to cancers, diabetes and obesity. What is our current understanding of the true risks to humans? Should we be advising patients to avoid exposures to BPA? Dr. Retha Newbold, developmental reproductive biologist for the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences, breaks down the issues related to this pervasive and potentially harmful product, which some states have even moved to ban in children's products. Dr. Jim Keany hosts.

Bisphenol A (BPA) — a substance that may have harmful health effects — occurs in 94 percent of thermal cash register receipts, scientists are reporting. The recycling of those receipts, they add, is a source of BPA contamination of paper napkins, toilet paper, food packaging and other paper products. The report, which could have special implications for cashiers and other people who routinely handle thermal paper receipts, appears in ACS’ journal Environmental Science and Technology.
