Has this ever happened to you? You get in the car and pull out of the driveway, just like you do every day. Then it dawns on you: “This is Saturday!” You’re halfway to the office when you realize you were headed to the store. Oops. It’s easy to drift along in the wrong direction. That happens in life. And it happens in business. That phenomenon is called the drift. Just like the current in a river, life has unseen forces that pull you along in a given direction. Lifestage, busyness, culture, obligations —all of that forms a draft that pulls you forward, whether you realize it or not. If you’re not careful, you can wake up to find that your business and personal life have drifted to a destination you never intended. We’ll show you how to avoid that by living your life with intention. We share three simple, powerful questions that will help you avoid the drift and navigate against the subtle forces of busyness and distraction. You can live your life on purpose if you pause long enough to answer these three profound questions. We are super excited about this episode! Why? Because we know how much these concepts have improved our lives. Here’s what we hope you’ll do after listening. Schedule some time on your calendar right now, and commit to using that time to reflect on the three questions we’ve shared with you. You’ll be amazed at the clarity you gain, and the determination to stay on course toward your biggest goals. Shout Out! Michael Hyatt is one of my favorite people in our space. He does things absolutely the right way and always works from a place of integrity and quality. You may recognize Michael as the author of the New York Times bestseller Platform: Get Noticed in a Noisy World and the coauthor of Living Forward: A Proven Plan to Stop Drifting and Get the Life You Want. In addition to being a highly successful author, Michael has worked in nearly every facet of book publishing in the 30 years since he began his career at Word Publishing (which was a part of Thomas Nelson) while a senior at Baylor University. Perhaps most notably, he played a large role at Thomas Nelson Publishers, which is the largest faith-based publisher in the world and is now part of HarperCollins. Michael was the company’s CEO from 2005 through 2011, and remained there as chairman until the company was sold in 2012.  Our conversation today includes Michael talking in detail about his experiences with the writing, publishing, and publicity processes. As you’ll learn here, his first book came very close to never being published, and only his own tenacity and persuasiveness saved it.  In addition, he’ll offer incredible value in the form of advice for anyone interested in writing or publishing a book. He explains, for example, why having your own platform is more important now than ever before. He also offers recommendations on topics such as starting with a blog (using social media instead is “like building a house on a rented lot”) and why you might want to rethink those gorgeous, image-filled emails to your mailing list.  For all this and much more, listen in to this episode of the Self-Publishing School podcast!   You can find Michael here: michaelhyatt.com Michael Hyatt on LinkedIn @michaelhyatt on Facebook @MichaelHyatt on Twitter michaelhyatt on Instagram   Show Notes [01:30] - Did Michael know that his book Platform would launch a whole arm of his business? [02:07] - Michael takes us back to the very first book he wrote, in 1997. He explains all the difficulties and struggles involved in both writing and publishing the book, and reveals that it came very close to not being published at all. [06:09] - How long a span of time did Michael’s 1,200 interviews on the book take place during? As he answers, he reveals the intensity of the publicity process. [08:22] - Michael explains what he means by going into “sales mode,” and shares some of what he did to publicize it and build his audience. [09:33]- We hear why Michael thinks his book went from something relatively few people were interested in to something that went on to sell hundreds of thousands of copies. [10:43] - Chandler zooms in on two things Michael has said: speaking in sound bites, and making the host sound good. [12:20] - We zoom back out to learn about Michael’s time at Thomas Nelson. He explains his experience in working in just about every facet of publishing. He then explains the dramatic change in publishing between 2006 and 2009. [15:18] - What are some of the biggest takeaways from that period that Michael now uses? He reveals that publishers now count on their authors’ platforms. [17:02] - Michael clarifies what he means by a “platform.” [18:40]- We learn more about platforms and how someone who’s just starting out can begin building their own platform. He recommends starting with a blog, and explains why. [21:44] - Michael talks about his audience-building methods he uses or recommends. He emphasizes the importance of having an email list, and creating an opt-in magnet. [25:50] - Does Michael think that the power of email is fading, or is it here to stay? In his answer, he discusses why he has recently switched from beautiful, HTML-based newsletters to text-based email without images. [27:30] - We hear what triggered all of the changes that Michael made a month ago. [28:35] - Michael takes a deeper dive into content and its creation. His blog is his workbench, he explains, and the ideas that work there make their way into other content such as his podcasts and books. [32:08] - What is Michael’s rhythm or process for creating content? [34:17] - Previously, Michael was more of a rhythmic writer; now it’s more system-based. He explains how his system functions. [37:01] - Michael’s content team has three people in addition to him. Here he explains his process for finding good people who stay for a long time. [40:23] - Because Michael came out of the world of book publishing (where every piece of content is assembled by a team), having a team help create his content feels natural to him. [43:11] - We learn what Michael recommends for someone who is just starting out and wants to get noticed by a publisher. [44:42] - In answer to the final question, Michael offers his parting tip for someone looking to publish their first book: write a book proposal for yourself. Not doing this is “like trying to build an addition onto your house without a blueprint,” he explains. [46:45] - Chandler has a free gift for listeners: a copy of Book Launch (FIND AND LINK THIS). Repurpose Your Career | Career Pivot | Careers for the 2nd Half of Life | Career Change | Baby Boomer

In this episode, Marc discusses goals for 2017. He wrote about this very subject in a blog post last year. Listen in for goals that last all the way through 2017!   Key Takeaways: [1:22] The idea for this post came from a podcast by Pat Flynn where he interviewed Michael Hyatt, author of Living Forward: A Proven Plan to Stop Drifting and Get the Life You Want. The topic was goals. How bold of a goal do you want to set — in the comfort zone, the discomfort zone (the home of bold goals), or the delusional zone? [3:17] Michael Hyatt suggests going right up to the delusional zone, and then backing off. Marc, in his goals, is pushing himself out of his comfort zone. [3:34] Marc gives five areas in which to set bold goals. Finances (debt, retirement, earnings, or charity), Relationships (spouse, parent, child, or friends), Career (promotion, big project, or starting a business), Lifestyle (Camper, condo, getting children off payroll, or travel), Health (weight, blood pressure, diet, or exercise). [6:45] Michael Hyatt mentions three Rs of goal-setting: Recommit, Revise, and Remove. Mid-year you will want to look at your goals again, and adjust them as needed.. [7:15] Marc always asks, should he tell anyone his goals? Does he want someone to hold him accountable to them? Personally, for Marc, telling someone provides personal initiative for him to execute on the goals. [7:38] Marc tells his goals for 2017. Financial: Stop drawing from IRAs and be fully supported by the business within the year. Relationships: Work on spousal relationship and develop new friendships in support of their goal to move overseas. Career: build a supportive membership community. Lifestyle: prepare to move, maybe to Ecuador. [10:21] Ecuador seems to have a lower cost of healthcare, and Marc’s insurance premiums and deductible are very high. Marc’s idea is to simplify. Health: Marc had high blood pressure. With diet and exercise, it is now pre-hypertensive, and he wants to bring it back to normal this year. [11:15] Marc wants to challenge you to look at these five areas: Finances, Relationships, Career, Lifestyle, and Health, and sit down to work out your goals for the year, and also to make a calendar entry for early July, to look at the goals again, and recommit, revise, or remove, as appropriate to the need. [12:00] Marc wants you to ask, are you going into your discomfort zone, and how are you going to measure the results? Think about it! [12:25] If you are considering retiring overseas, Marc heard the Money Matters podcast mention the RetiredBrains.com website. They rank countries in eight categories. Ecuador was No. 1, Panama was No. 2, and Mexico was No. 3. International Living magazine has similar ratings, but puts Mexico at No.1, for the exchange rate. [13:07] Marc and his wife are looking to live where they will be stretched culturally, live a simpler life, and have good, affordable healthcare. Join career expert, motivator, and award-winning author Andrew LaCivita as he discusses how to visualize your way to success! Get full post, summary, audio, quote cards, and more at: http://milewalk.com/mwblog/how-visualize-way-success SUMMARY Have you ever felt like you were driving through your life or your career with the emergency brake on? It feels as if no matter how hard you work at something, you’re simply not progressing as quickly as you’d like? Today, I want to talk about a daily exercise I’ve practiced religiously—visualization. And, provide some insight into how to visualize your way to success. Five minutes of this every day will improve your life dramatically. When did that gray hair and eye wrinkle show up? I never notice my face change from day to day. Only when I look at pictures from a few years back can I see the transformation. Much of your life is like this. Your career is like this. Your marriage can be like this. While most people prefer to slow the aging process, many want to accelerate their lives and careers. Much like the unnoticeable change with age, your progress from day to day becomes imperceptible. Oftentimes, you’ll feel better about your advancements if you take time to look back at where you were one, three, and five years ago. That’ll help your psyche a bit. I’m sure many of you are like me. You feel where you’ve been is history. You care more about getting where you’re going—and you want to get there is a hurry! First Step: Before you look forward, take a deep breath and spend a few moments realizing (yes—realizing) how far you’ve come and all you’ve accomplished. In fact, spend a few minutes every day doing this. What’s the best way to get from where I am to where I want to go? There are few key principles to understand to help you quickly get from where you are to where you want to go: Identify where you want to go. Make sure you’re working toward something you love. Believe you can accomplish it. Identify. The first is you’ll get where you’re going faster if you know where you want to go. It also helps to know where you are. Don’t laugh. Most people are in a much better starting position than they realize. Love. The second is you’ll make greater leaps in life by doing small things you love than doing big things you don’t. You need to enjoy yourself each day because your passion and optimism will fuel getting things done. Most importantly, don’t let what you can do stop you from doing what you were meant to do! Believe. The third is you need to believe you can get there and be unafraid to jump in! At least once a day, I think about this fantastic quote from American Naturalist and Essayist John Burroughs. He said, “Leap, and the net will appear.” (If you’re really ambitious, check out The Art of Seeing Things: Essays by John Burroughs and You’ll See it When You Believe it by Wayne Dyer.) You believe it. Then it happens. It’s never the other way around. Where’s the 5-minute thing you promised me? I’m in a hurry… Okay antsy pants. Visualize yourself at your end-state even though you don’t know how to get there. Imagine yourself at your “destination.” What’s it like? How does it feel? How does it sound? What will the end-state allow you to do? Imagine this for five minutes. It’s okay to dream, but you’re more likely creating a reality. “Five minutes” means you can do this in the shower, on the train, or wherever. It’s best to do it in a quiet location. This visual of you in all your glory will have pull power—it’ll feel like it’s pulling you toward it. In actuality, you’ll be pushing yourself toward it one step at a time. There are really only two steps required for the greatest level of success: the next step and the extra step. You simply need to know what you need to do next to move toward your destination. Putting a little extra effort along the way will separate you from the masses who are unwilling to do that. Picture the end-state, what it’s like, how it feels, how is sounds, and what it will enable you to do. You need to do this repetitively as you work toward this transition and evolution. That will help you do this one-day at a time. Then take what you’ve identified as the next step. And take it. One step at a time. One fantastic resource to help you visualize your future is Living Forward: A Proven Plan to Stop Drifting and Get the Life You Want. It’s a great book by Michael Hyatt and Daniel Harkavy.
