We (Jinny and Chris) kick off the first episode of What is Life with a retrospective of the decade since we ended our previous podcast, The Weekly Geek (welcome, Weekly Geek fam, we missed you!) We catch you up on what we've been up to in this extended hour-and-a-half-long episode covering a wide range of topics like blade smithing, parenting, comics, reality shows, corporate life and using creativity as a conduit for mindfulness. What is Life is a show about the things in life that make us stop and take notice, the things that activate us and keep us looking forward to the future. Future episodes will feature guest co-hosts, but for this intro episode we wanted to spend some time introducing ourselves first. We hope you enjoy it. Audio quality note: Being that this is our first time back in podcast land there is some background noise from our dog walking around on our hardwood floors and us shifting in our seats, screwing and unscrewing our coffee thermoses and so forth. This will be improved in future episodes! We will also get a proper theme song soon but for this episode it's Stem by Lower Dens off the album Nootropics. There are also a few curse words here and there, so if you're listening with kids around please be aware we drop a few F bombs from time to time. Connect with us on twitter @whatislifecast or leave a review and let us know what you think! Find Chris and Jinny on Instagram and Twitter @chrisfurniss and @jinnyjuice respectively.

On their new album Golden Doubt, Melbourne-via-Tasmanian quartet Quivers honor their resilience. Vocalist Sam Nicholson breaks down the LP title. “Golden, because musically we daydream with the guitars of Teenage Fanclub and The Cure, the singing of The Roches' sisters, the basslines of Another Sunny Day, and the drums of Lower Dens or Car Seat Headrest,” he says. “Golden Doubt, because hitting your thirties after losing people knocks you off balance for a while, but no longer caring what the world thinks is always a breakthrough feeling.” On today's Song of the Day, the band reflects on the beauty in the world. They explain in a press statement, “It is a song about being overwhelmed by someone, and somewhere, but also overwhelmed by the beauty of those strange, new experiences we used to have when travel was possible.” Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Chris Tabron is a very successful Brooklyn-based producer, engineer, mixer who has worked with artists such as Beyonce, The Strokes, Robert Glasper, Battles, Lower Dens, The Voidz, and Charlotte Day Wilson.I spoke with Chris about how he got into music recording and production, and about his approach to working with artists – and the art of recording and the skills needed to be a producer. Our conversation went on for about two-and-a-half hours, of which this is the first hour. The second portion was less formal – really just the two of us chatting about things. Chris had some questions for me, too. I’ll post that part of our conversation in a future episode.Chris recorded in his studio in Brooklyn, using a Shure SM7 mic into a Neve 1073 module. I was using my usual AEA 44 mic into a VT-2 mic preamp.

After Eight Show - Music That You Just Don't Hear Anywhere Else!

We had a cartload of #NewMusic in our playlist! An eclectic mix of original, intelligent, melodic, grown-up songs - #electronic, #rnb, #jazz, #blues and #acoustic. And mostly from artists who you have not heard of - yet! Think 'next series of Jools' - that's the kind of artists that we play. Amongst our selections, there was #NewMusic from Buzzy Lee (Sasha Spielberg), Moonshine Society, Feral Family, Salt Ashes, Shamiya Battles, Félix Rabin, Lower Dens, Kandace Springs, MAN IN A ROOM, MSEA, Teebs + Thomas Stankiewicz, Aware, Kittel & Co., Mia Carucci, Daniel Koestner, Smoke Fairies, Death And Vanilla and Purple Heart Parade. We also gave a beautiful song by oh emma miller its first ever radio play. Emma is an accomplished songwriter and performer and this song has a beautiful cello arrangement by Tender Central which adds enormously to the atmosphere of the song! Think Kate Bush at her most romantic. Our Luvva Cover was a punked up version of the first big hit from The Kinks from 1964. It's raw, raucous and utterly brilliant - the song is given a real going over by RID (Robots in Disguise)! This week's episode is brought to you by Stubhub. Coming to you live from the green room at Chicago's Aragon Ballroom, nestled up tight next to the L train tracks, this week we're excited to share a conversation with Jana Hunter of Lower Dens. The Baltimore band's take on indie pop has been adored since 2010 debut Twin-Hand Movement, and last year's incredible The Competition pushes that momentum into a higher plane of love and protection of the outcast and vulnerable. In this chat, Jana and I discuss queer and trans representation on stage, the first concert he ever saw, touring with Of Monsters and Men, and navigating the industry while staying true to intensely personal social and political messages. Enjoy!

Welcome to a late summer edition of the Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions podcast. On this episode, we’ve got two talks taped at AD HQ in Los Angeles. Up first, Lower Dens’ Jana Hunter. On September 6th, Lower Dens releases its fourth LP The Competition. The conversation reflected on Hunter’s solo beginnings, the formation of Lower Dens and the project’s subsequent sonic evolution over the past ten years. Also discussed were the intervening years between 2015’s Escape From Evil, Hunter’s experience with gender dysphoria, and coming out the other side. And on side B: Rain Phoenix, musician, actress, and host of the LaunchLeft podcast, which returns for its second season soon. Rain founded Aleka’s Attic in the late ‘80s with her late brother River Phoenix, and has recorded as paper cranes and with the “galactic country” band Venus and the Moon. On October 31st—the same day River passed away in 1993—she releases her debut solo album, River.

In Act 1, Tyler tells a building story comparing his recent digitally-enabled journey from New York City to Baltimore with the types of experience-guiding journeys we might have in buildings. He asks whether we should at this point consider GPS- and app-assisted travel to be miraculous or mundane, and why those experiences don't existed at the same scale in buildings. He also asks: will they ever exist in buildings? In Act 2, we are joined by Dhaval Shah, the Senior Product Manager of the Digital Buildings Division at Schneider Electric Global. Dhaval has been incubating (and just launched) a new service called Workplace Advisor that addresses the burgeoning needs of commercial office tenants and occupants with respect to optimizing space layout, occupant well-being and facility services. He discusses the emergence of the experience economy built on the groundwork laid by the growth of the digital economy, and explains how enabling humans to perform better and more healthily in today's service jobs makes all the sense in the world. Dhaval describes the different levels of way-finding (static, dynamic, and integrated) and where we are in that frontier with buildings. He is excited to be able to both alleviate and harness footfall traffic in facilities to optimize office experiences, and believes that from what he's seen of early-adopters, within five years the market will be at such a level of maturity that we'll all be asking him "what took so long?". Dhaval views the building technology industry as a Blue Ocean for both technology and business innovation offering huge, untapped opportunity to improve experiences - and that the timing for doing so could not be better. The band’s first EP was recorded on an 8-track cassette recorder and subsequently released on Instacrush Records. Since its release in 2015, they’ve tirelessly toured up and down the East Coast, joining the likes of Titus Andronicus, Lower Dens, Sheer Mag, Alice Bag, Ought and more on stage.  “Reveries,” Vonderkuhn’s first full-length album, was released earlier this year to glowing praise. The album's lead single, "Worry" is a powerful pop tune drenched in messy garage tones. With a follow-up invitation to showcase at South By Southwest 2018, Vonderkuhn has drawn comparisons to music icons like Joan Jett and Liz Phair.  Set list: Candy Buttons Bad Habits - interview - Cellophane Worry

Before Jenn Wasner (Wye Oak, Flock of Dimes) and Jana Hunter (Lower Dens) were famous musicians, they worked long shifts together in a Baltimore restaurant. The friends watched each other's artistic careers explode, and when they sat down in the Sonos room at Rough Trade NYC — for one of three conversations that Talkhouse curated for Northside Festival — their chat was both hilarious and moving. (You can listen to Jlin with William Basinski now, and Suicide's Martin Rev talking with Julianna Barwick will drop soon.) As well as tales of those early days washing dishes and lying to annoying customers, their talk takes in the baggage of being "a girl with a guitar," the pros and cons of ceding control in the creative process, and... Abba. Essential Tremors talks to musicians and other creative people about the music that shaped them. In the debut episode, hosts Matt Byars and Lee Gardner speak with Jana Hunter, singer, guitarist, and songwriter for Baltimore indie-pop band Lower Dens. Turns out the melancholy in the band's mercurial sound has its roots in Jana's experiences with the music of the Smiths, but also Vivaldi and a certain '70s AM hit.

Lower Dens leader Jana Hunter is a frequent Talkhouse contributor and a fine writer — in April of 2015, she wrote a widely read piece for Cosmopolitan titled "What It's Like to Be a Female Musician When You Don't Identify as a Woman." And Perfume Genius, aka Mike Hadreas, has said he's pretty fluid with gender too. But that was only one reason why we invited these two to sit down and chat for the Talkhouse Music Podcast. Lower Dens and Perfume Genius make some of the most interestingly beautiful music around, and Hunter and Hadreas are two intriguing, well spoken people. Sure, they talked about "gay/gender stuff" but they also just related as musicians — and talked candidly about inspiration, how to conduct yourself on stage, the perils of social media and dealing with hate mail. And they related as people too — they talk about dealing with email, the awesomeness of Rihanna, their methods for quitting smoking and why Clark Kent is hot. Hadreas and Hunter had met only briefly once before, but they're fans of each other's music, and when they sat down at the Talkhouse Music mikes, they hit it off immediately — in fact, almost from the start these two very thoughtful people were giggling like teenagers. They do have one big difference, though: Hadreas believes in everything, but Hunter doesn't believe in anything.

Lower Dens' music is about mood more than stage-stalking showmanship: Singer Jana Hunter's icy-cool demeanor sets a hauntingly atmospheric tone that's all about mystery, washes of guitar-saturated noise and the difficult emotions that lie, unexpressed, beneath the surface. Mixing songs from 2010's majestic Twin Hand Movement with material from the hotly anticipated Nootropics, Lower Dens seethed through a gorgeous, brooding set at NPR Music's SXSW day party, held Thursday at The Parish in Austin, Texas recorded on March 15, 2012.
