In 1991 the artist Angelica took a song from Rosie and the Original, kept the bubblegum pop melody, but swapped the instruments out for a fat synthesizer and released this version of Angel Baby, it was a hit, reaching number 29 on the Billboard hot 100.That singer is Angelica Garcia's mother. Garcia has released Gemelo, our Record of the Week on WNXP. It's an album that is similarly in love with the sounds of a synthesizer. Just like her mom's album.

In Berkeley Talks episode 180, Dania Matos and Fabrizio Mejia, vice chancellor and associate vice chancellor, respectively, for UC Berkeley's Division of Equity and Inclusion, join Berkeley student Angelica Garcia to discuss the campus's Latinx Thriving Initiatives (LTI) and how these efforts are supporting Berkeley's goal of not only becoming a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), but also of transforming Berkeley into a Latinx Thriving Institution.“There's a practical standpoint of this that's about becoming a Hispanic Serving Institution,” begins Matos. “That's why you'll hear HSIs a lot, and it's important in that naming and framing. Dr. Gina Garcia is a sort of national expert who talks about this, but for us, it's really taking it beyond that. Because becoming an HSI is about 25% enrollment of undergraduate students, which, by the way, the federal government does not count graduate students, and we care about graduate students here, too.“For us, we're thinking about (how to) build this ecosystem where we are honoring, bringing in more Latinx communities, but also honoring the different ways of knowing and being, which are so counter to the way U.S. higher educational system is done.“Latinx Thriving Initiatives is a multifaceted campuswide effort, but not just campus. It's really thinking and honoring our mission as a public institution, and (asking), ‘How do we center community in that?' We're not just a community center that people come to or get admitted to and leave from in four years, but a place where they're having an impact and creating that.”“It's collecting all the work that is happening,” added Mejia, “honoring that historical effort, that ongoing effort, but also asking ourselves, ‘What else? What does it look like to have a Latinx student body, Latinx staff, Latinx faculty that are all thriving from the moment they conceptualize “Is Berkeley a place for me?” to the moment they land on the campus and say, “Where do I see myself in this environment? How do I meet my aspirations? Am I getting the support all the way through?"'Listen to the full conversation in Berkeley Talks episode 180, “What are Berkeley's Latinx Thriving Initiatives?”This conversation was recorded in March 2023 as the first episode of Berkeley's Latinx Thriving Initiatives podcast, which explores what it means for Berkeley to become a Latinx Thriving Institution, and the direct impact it'll have on its Latinx-identifying campus community. It was created in partnership with Ethnic Studies Changemaker, a campus group of students plus a faculty adviser that aims to “amplify the voices and diverse experiences of marginalized communities.”Learn more about Berkeley's Latinx Thriving Initiatives and watch a video of what these efforts have accomplished over the past year on the Latinx Thriving Initiatives website.Photo by H.G. Today on the show, we're talking to Grammy award-winning musician, Adrian Quesada who's best known as one-half of the Black Pumas. During the pandemic Adrian started working on a solo project inspired by his longtime love of psychedelic music and Latin American love songs from the ‘60s and ‘70s. The result is an album called Boleros Psicodelicos that reached number one on the Billboard Latin album chart when it was released earlier this month. On today's episode, Adrian and a few of the singers featured on the album—iLe, Angelica Garcia and Tita—talk about how the new album came together, their collaborative process, and how boleros and baladas fit into Latin music today. Angelica Garcia's music is as colorful and eclectic as her many influences, ranging from traditional rancheras, folk and blues to electronic and pop music. In this intimate portrait, Angelica takes us into the worlds that shape her sound: the family parties in El Monte, California, where she first learned to sing; the empty church in Richmond, Virginia where she wrote her first songs; and her current practices of journaling and meditation that lead her to dynamic compositions. As she shares the inspiration behind her songs, Angelica reflects on her relationship with her voice: the memories it holds, and the lessons it has taught her as an artist.

Today we're talking with Berkeley City College President, Angelica Garcia. Angelica is just finishing up her first year in the president role, one that she took on during COVID-19. She says she's mostly been working from home, maybe visiting campus two dozen times, and can't wait to get back on campus fully. With 116 colleges, in 72 districts, the California college landscape is all about communities. Angelica says being part of a community is what fuels her, and she will remain relentlessly focused on what students need. During these trying times, Angelica says constant communication has been key. She says there's a level of urgency, and we can't let up in certain areas. Angelic explains that she likes to be briefed with all relevant information so that she can show up in the capacity that she needs to. If there's a crisis going on, Angelica wants to know who's being impacted and everything about them, as well as understanding who's mitigating the conversation. She asks colleagues to make it easy for her to know what they need from her. Then after the crisis is over she likes to have a post-op conversation to discuss what they did well and what they could have done better. Angelica's leadership style is to understand and uplift. To be prepared she likes to look at her calendar one to two weeks in advance, having one day a week that she makes sure to catch up on everything. She says it takes a village for her to show up the way the community needs her to and that she can't afford to not be informed. Angelica says a mentor once told her to make sure you're excellent at the job you have now. Whatever is currently in front of you, show up as your best. Angelica's mom keeps her humble by reminding her that it doesn't matter if you're a custodian of a college president, it takes everyone to run a college smoothly. Whether as a college president or in her personal life, Angelica says her role will always be to advance equity, racial justice, and to make sure anyone interested in higher education has access. Angelica says the advice she would give a new college president is to get an executive coach, figure out who your group of critical colleagues are, and be excellent at the job you have in front of you. -- Welcome to innovating together, a podcast produced by the University Innovation Alliance. Here it is -- my top 10 of 2020! There are probably a lot of people you’d expect me to have in my top 20, like John Moreland and American Aquarium. While those artists made huge strides in pushing their own boundaries, they just didn’t make as much of an emotional impact on me as the albums featured here. For me, top albums need to both push boundaries AND make me FEEL SOMETHING. These are the 20 albums this year that made my heart skip a beat. Kory Quinn -- “On the Borderline” (Home of the Brave) Maya de Vitry -- “Bread for the Circus” (How to Break a Fall) Ben de la Cour -- “In God We Trust...All Others Pay Cash” (Shadowland) Juni Ata -- “I’ll Try Anything Twice” (Saudade) Nana Grizol -- “Plantation Country” (South Somewhere Else) Fern Maddie -- “Of Song and Bone” (North Branch River) Angelica Garcia -- “Jicama” (Cha Cha Palace) Jake Blount -- “The Angels Done Bowed Down” (Spider Tales) Stephanie Lambring -- “Daddy’s Disappointment” (Autonomy) Shameika Stepney -- “Shameika Said (feat. Over the last two weeks, both the Republican and Democratic parties have proposed their visions for America and they could not be more different. President Trump used his primetime speech to convince those watching that he was still the outsider that had been elected four years prior and that he would not conform to establishment politics, even though he is now the establishment. Joe Biden used his time to demonstrate that he believes that Trump is a threat to democracy and that reelecting him would mean four more years of divisive politics and the continued mishandling of the coronavirus.   Toluse Olorunnipa, White House Reporter at The Washington Post, Tim Alberta, Chief Political Correspondent at Politico, and Elaina Plott, National Political Reporter at The New York Times analyze the Republican National convention and share what the next 60 days could look like.  The economic slowdown caused by the coronavirus pandemic has left millions of Americans without work. That includes Angelica Garcia, who was a barista at Starbucks in The Rio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas for 19 years. She shares what the last few months have been like for her and what her hopes are for the future. Plus, Heather Long from The Washington Post describes the overall health of the U.S. economy and whether Americans can expect more economic relief from the federal government.  In 2018, former defense department analyst Elissa Slotkin flipped a seat from red to blue in a suburban Michigan district that Trump carried by seven points. She credited extensive grassroots organizing for her success, including the 200,000 doors her team knocked. This time around, the restrictions related to the coronavirus pandemic have made it impossible for her to reuse her 2018 playbook. Congresswoman Slotkin shares how she's adjusted her campaign and how she's working to safely interact with voters in person and online.

Sometimes you just need to take a mental health break! It’s all good...we have a refrigerator on the way. Also, I’m starting a new thing! I’m going to feature an album each episode!   Album of the Week: Samantha Crain -- A Small Death       Americana is becoming more expansive as the people who started the millennium off playing punk with a twang move on to more challenging terrain. Crain’s A Small Death is a wide-ranging album that dabbles in jazz and electronic music. Fellow Tulsa singer-songwriter John Calvin Abney is along for the ride and adds some more cosmic layering to Crain’s gorgeous songwriting. It’s an astonishing synthesis of Crain’s explorations into pop and her folk roots and easily one of my favorite album this year. Good morning, RVA! It’s 40 °F, but highs today are back up in the 60s and we should see plenty of sunshine. As far as the weather goes, we’ve got a bunch of pleasant days ahead of us.Water coolerAs of this morning, the Virginia Department of Health reports 1,484 positive cases of the coronavirus in the Commonwealth, and 34 people in Virginia have died as a result of the virus. VDH reports 170 cases in and around Richmond (Chesterfield: 59, Henrico: 78, and Richmond: 33). Big grain of salt with these numbers this morning, though. 11 hours ago (which is more recent than the last update to the VDH site), Michael Martz at the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported 103 positive cases in Henrico and 67 in Richmond. Again, my standard disclaimer about the number of tests administered still applies.Sean Gorman and Mel Leonor at the RTD have some updates from the Governor’s press conference yesterday. I appreciate the Gov saying that Virginia will hit peakvirus between late April and late May and that he wants “Virginians to prepare themselves for the long haul.” I think we should keep in mind that the long haul might, in fact, be much longer—even after peakvirus. This tweet from @pinboardresonates: Once we get through the worst of times locally, it’ll be really hard for folks to continue sheltering in place—which is exactly what we’ll need to do!Reminder: City Council meets today at 3:30 PM for a special meeting to introduce legislation that will allow them to meet remotely and finally get around to passing some laws. They will stream audio from this meeting, and, assuming no technical issues (probably a totally fine assumption, right?), you can tune in here. After they get the audio sorted and we can all hear what they get up to, I’m excited for Council to keep thinking about what public engagement looks like moving forward. More and more I feel like if you want folks involved, you have to provide asynchronous ways for them to do that. I’m not sure what that looks like for City Council or how they can do it equitably, but I am sure a single Facebook Live session at a specific time is not it.The YWCA announced that they have re-opened their downtown preschool and will provide full-day childcare to essential personnel in Richmond. It costs $250 per week, but there is a sliding scale and full scholarships for families that qualify. If this sounds like you or an essential worker you know and love, apply via sprout@ywcarichmond.org. Also, while we’re talking YWCA, their regional hotline for domestic and sexual violence is, of course, open 24 hours a day: 804.612.6126. Another number to put in your phone for whenever you may need it.As pictured above, the Brook Road bike lanes are totally under construction! I walked out there with my family yesterday during our scheduled “go outside” time, and grabbed that picture of the southbound lane near Bellevue. Crews are still working on paving the northbound lane in that area, but, progress! Plus, I hear work on the Patterson and Malvern lanes will begin soon, too. If you see other cool infrastructure popping up around town, please send a few pictures my way.NPR’s World Cafe stopped by Richmond to talk with Matthew E. White from local recording studio Spacebomb. Spacebomb just put out that new Angelica Garcia albumthat I can’t stop listening to, so make sure you check that out after listening to this interview.Yesterday was “Census Day,” of which I was unaware until I saw a bunch of people tweeting about it last night. If you haven’t taken the literally four minutes to fill out the Census, please make sure you do so. A lot of federal funding, something that’s going to be absolutely critical over the next year or two, is distributed according to Census data. Filling out the census means more money for the place you live. This morning’s longreadCities are on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic — not the cause of it.I love this piece from a city councilmember in St. Paul. Imagine what Richmond could be like if our City Council was filled with progressive people who loved cities this much?At the end of the day, here’s what our response to COVID-19 will tell us: you either care about people of color, young people, old people, poor people, sick people, transit-dependent people, undocumented people, queer people and people who can’t afford a home — or you don’t. You either believe our cities and communities are for all of us, or you openly and proudly hope the experiment to make it that way fails, because you stand for the opposite. Candidates, columnists, and anyone else right now crowing against urbanism, science, human decency and good governance are telling us what they stand for. Let it be known in this moment, in our cities and across our country, what we stand for. We are fighting for a rent and mortgage suspension, moratorium on evictions, healthcare for all, massive transit and green infrastructure funding to aid economic recovery, compassionate homelessness response, labor rights for those taking care of us, bailouts for the people whether or not you have papers, and so much more, because we don’t just believe in the idea of cities. We believe in the people of them, and in our non-negotiable right to live with what we need, where we are, close to those we love.If you’d like your longread to show up here, go chip in a couple bucks on the ol’ Patreon.

And what does it REALLY look like to "love yourself" and the people around you? How does this all play a part in the healing journey? Tune in to Episode 3 of OVERTHINKER, where I chat with Angelica Garcia from @withlovehelly about LOVE and how it looks in everyday life, even in the midst of frustration, codependency, and feeling like you've got nothing left to give.
