Finally, the Black Widow movie has been released! It's been delayed over a year, but now it's out in the theater (as well as on Disney Plus), and your intrepid crew has made the journey back to the theater to check it out. In this SPOILER-FILLED review, we'll share our thoughts on the film and how it works with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As a bonus, we also discuss the Disney Plus series Loki, which takes the villain/anti-hero through an adventure that has major implications for the rest of the MCU.Black Widow takes place between Captain America: Civil War and Infinity War, and provides a glimpse into Natasha's life before she became an Avenger. On the run from Thunderbolt Ross, Natasha winds up returning home after her long lost "Sister" contacts her, and she learns that the Red Room program that turned her into an assassin is still operating. The Planet 8 crew discusses what we liked about the film, the performances, the little bits of connective tissue to other MCU films, and so much more. This film introduces some major characters, including Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, aka the "other" Black Widow, David Harbour as the Red Guardian and the villain Taskmaster, whose identity is rather controversial. If nothing else, it was a great spotlight for Scarlett Johansson and a good send off for the character. The Loki TV show was a mixed bag for the Planet 8 crew. Certainly Tom Hiddleston did a wonderful job in providing us with a Loki of real substance who goes through extensive character growth. The story itself was complex and with the timestream fractured, should feed directly into Spider-Man: No Way Home and Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. What other Marvel properties might we see come out of this? Phase 4 looks to be full of surprises! Our Sensor Sweep brings us some great shows coming to the Bay Area. In August, there will be two Godzillafest shows at the Balboa Theater in San Francisco. On August 20-22, it will be King Kong Crashes Godzillafest, with a number of King Kong kaiju films as well as many Godzilla films, and special guest Linda Miller from King Kong Escapes. Then on August 27-29, it's Legendary Godzillafest, featuring many Legendary Godzilla films, with special guest TJ Storm, motion capture artist who played Godzilla. Both weekends will have vendors with tons of goodies. And there will even be a show t-shirt. Go to Bay Area Film Events to get all the info about tickets, what movies are going to be shown, and more! We'd love to hear your thoughts on Black Widow and Loki! Emmanuelle's story is an epic one. Perhaps that's why when she was connected with Ramon Perez (Jim Henson's Tale of Sand, Marvel Two-in-One) and was mentored under his tutelage with an eye to creating comics of her own, she came up with the beginnings of what would become her fictionalized autobiographical masterpiece Queen Street instead of the few drawn pages he requested. Aaron and Emmanuelle go deep on this story (her story) and all the multi-layered implications that as an exceedingly precocious 7-year-old she didn't truly understand, but as an adult in retrospect, had far reaching consequences on the rest of her life – both greatly positive and darkly negative in equal partsAaron learns that Emmanuelle is exceedingly self-aware, but also still that gifted dreamer with a hugely developed imagination that she was as a child. Her inner child is still active and it's what makes her such a lush creator and artist. They talk about the influence of growing up in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario as a half Filipino, half French-Canadian who used ballet as her first gateway to putting her creative energy to use in the physical world. Speaking of the physical world, the idyllic time of Queen Street eventually gave way to the grey of adolescent reality. Emmanuelle addresses what became of her in those grey times as the recession loomed, addiction touched her life and she grew into the adult she is today.Emmanuelle unpacks the spoken and unspoken barriers she faced as a women of colour of lower middle-class and how her unspoken personality sometimes comes directly in conflict with outdated societal expectations and assumptions about how woman are supposed to act. Then, we talk about her chaste christian-catholic upbringing and how she balances that with a modern culture that is very open with sex and sexuality. She explains how she walks that emotional tightrope as part of her new adult's only erotic comic (exclusively available on Patreon) Princess Bunyi. With a strong manga influence ala Rumiko Takahashi, a heavy romance novel bend and a little dose of straight-up sexual fantasy. Princess Bunyi is now published monthly for Emmanuelle's Patreon supporters, so go check it out! This episode of Speech Bubble is sponsored by Hairy Tarantula, which is having a 50% off sale on all trade paperbacks and graphic novels all through the month of November. It's the last full-length edition of 4-Panel for 2018, and in the spirit of the season Andrew, Mick and Producer Rob take a look at some Christmas comics. What could possibly go wrong? We mean well. Honest, we really do. So what comics did Santa leave under the tree for us? Well, there's Marvel Two-in-One: Silent Night … Deadly Night! (starring The Thing and Ghost Rider), What The--?! X-Mas Special (Milk and Cookies, Santa Doom, Chaplain America), Evil Dead 2: A Merry Deadite Christmas, The Lobo Paramilitary Christmas Special, Marvel Holiday Special Volume 1 (Yes, Virginia, There Is A Santron, Moleman's Christmas and Christmas Day in Manhattan), and the Wormwood, Gentleman Corpse Christmas Special. After that we round off this episode and this year with our usual look at comics and manga that we've been reading, and this week we've got Doctor Who: The Phantom Piper, Marvel Platinum: The Definitive Thanos, and Doctor Star and The Kingdom of Lost Tomorrows. Character Corner - A Podcast on Your favorite Comic Book Characters
Avengers Infinity War is in theaters now and is already crushing records (and souls). While you wait for Avengers 4 to come out, now is a perfect time to catch up on Thanos in the comics to see just how accurate the movie is. But before we can get into Thanos, we first have to give a brief overview of Marvel Cosmic. We've touched on Marvel Cosmic a bit with Inhumans and when we talked Alex Summers. But Thanos throws us right in the middle of it. Jim Starlin really helped solidify the cosmic side of Marvel and so we give a condensed rundown of the Celestials, Eternals, Adam Warlock and more. Trust us, we will revisit all of this more in later episodes in more details. We then jump forward a bit to go through Jason Aaron's Thanos Rising which while it's more recent (2013), it gives a pretty great (and dark) view of Thanos' origins. Then its back to the early 90's and Thanos collecting the Infinity Stones (or rather, Soul gems as they were called) in Thanos Quest, the Infinity Gauntlet crossover and more. We end with the recent Thanos solo book that if you're not reading it...you're missing out on greatness. Why are Dan and Mike covering Marvel Team-Up #32, along with The Brave and the Bold #118, instead of an issue of Marvel Two-in-One? For the answer to that, you'll have to listen. But that's not why you're here. You're here to hear about that dog. That poor, poor dog.
