#STATETHINKING: Iran, maximum pressure works. @MaryKissel 1902 Persia
Læs hele analysen her. Vigtig investorinformation.
Læs hele analysen her Vigtig investorinformation.

The Biden administration is pressing for an end to the war in a hostage deal, while working to topple Benjamin Netanyahu's government. It has many allies and tools in this effort: the threat to sanction an IDF unit, the looming specter of international arrest warrants from the Hague, the Israeli anti-Netanyahu press and, from within the cabinet, an attempt by Benny Gantz to push for accepting a near-surrender hostage deal. At the same time, the right flank of Netanyahu's coalition has issued an ultimatum: should such a deal come to pass they will opt out and topple the coalition. Has Netanyahu reached the end of his rope?
Hour 2 of the MOnday Bob Rose Show for 2-5-24
Foremost Republican figure and former President, Donald Trump, recently expressed stern criticism over the foreign policy decisions of current President Joe Biden, in the light of a tragic drone attack that resulted in the loss of three American servicemembers and left over two dozen injured. Trump drew stark comparisons between his approach to Iran, defined by intense sanctions to limit potential attacks against U.S forces, and the current administration's stance. Trump's presidential term is remembered for its robust deterrent measures against Iran, which caused significant financial strain on the nation. His regime urged Iranian forces to refrain from troubling U.S. vessels in the Arabian Gulf, with a notable military action under his command resulting in the elimination of Qasem Soleimani, the commanding figure of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Quds Force, deemed liable for attacks on U.S. military personnel. Underscoring the erstwhile administration's effective diplomatic tactics, Trump voiced, "Iran was struggling and on its knees three years back. My maximum pressure policy ensured that they were so restrained financially that they weren't able to fund their terrorist proxies effectively." According to Trump, the Biden administration reversed the groundwork of his Maximum Pressure policy by endowing Iran with substantial funds. "Once Biden stepped foot into office, he flooded Iran with billions of dollars. This unfettered influx of wealth has empowered the regime to fuel violence and devastation across the Middle East," he shared.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Following a devastating drone strike against a U.S. military facility in northeastern Jordan that led to the tragic loss of three American service people and the injury of at least 25 others, the prior U.S. President expressed severe criticism against the current administration. Upon reflecting on this terrible event, he took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to share his deep condolences and thoughts about the incident. He expressed his heartfelt sympathies towards the bereaved families of the courageous Americans who gave their lives serving our Nation. He described the incident as a shocking act of aggression against the United States and a regrettable result of the existing administration's alleged leniency and capitulation. His messages were direct and filled with disappointment at the present state of affairs. He reminded the readers that just three years ago, Iran was financially challenged and vastly restrained due to America's stringent policies. He spoke fondly of the Maximum Pressure approach that he asserts left Iran barely financially able to support their problematic proxies.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Biden and his team still say they are against Iran getting nuclear weapons, but their actions tell a different story. In this week's Mideast News Hour, Caroline spoke with Gabriel Noronha, the former State Department Iran specialist who disclosed the scope of Biden's concessions to Ayatollah Khamenei earlier this month. The two discussed the details of the concessions and what it means. They then considered what Trump's Maximum Pressure strategy achieved and whether and how Russia's invasion of Ukraine impacts Biden's actions going forward.
This article is the third in a series of articles on the situation in Cuba recently written by Manolo De Los Santos and Vijay Prashad. On July 22, US President Joe Biden and his Vice President Kamala Harris released a “fact sheet” on US “measures” against Cuba. The release from the White House said that Cuba was a “top priority for the Biden-Harris administration.” On March 9, Biden's Press Secretary Jen Psaki said, “A Cuba policy shift is not currently among President Biden's top priorities.” On July 12, NBC News reporter Kelly O'Donnell asked Psaki if Biden had reassessed his priorities regarding Cuba after the protests on the island the previous day. “In terms of where it ranks in a priority order,” Psaki replied, “I'm not in a position to offer that, but I can tell you that we will be closely engaged.” Not a priority, closely engaged, top priority: matters have moved rapidly from March 9 to July 22. What moved the Biden-Harris administration to focus so quickly on Cuba? On the morning of July 11, some people in Cuba—notably in the town of San Antonio de los Baños—took to the streets to express their dissatisfaction with the social and economic problems created by the US-imposed blockade and by the global pandemic. The reaction to these events in Havana and in Washington, D.C., is instructive: Cuba's President Miguel Díaz-Canel heard the news of the protests, got into a car, and drove the 40 miles to San Antonio de los Baños, where he met with the people; while in Washington, Biden used the protest to call for the overthrow of the Cuban government. US government-funded nongovernmental organizations and Cuban American groups hastened to take advantage of the frenzy, excited by the possibility of regime change in Cuba. On the evening of July 11, tens of thousands of Cubans rallied across Cuba to defend their revolutionary process. Since that Sunday evening, Cuba has been calm. Over the course of his 12 uninterrupted years as prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu left a profound mark on Israel's foreign policy. Since taking the reins from him last month, his successor, Naftali Bennett, has tried to capitalize on some of Netanyahu's accomplishments—such as the diplomatic normalization agreements with Arab states that are known as the Abraham Accords— while also charting a new course when it comes to relations with traditional partners like the United States and Jordan. Born and raised in Southside Jamaica Queens the artist Nikko Tesla experienced very humble beginnings even though his musical lineage would say otherwise. The Nephew of disco legend Gloria Gaynor who sang such hits as “I Will Survive” and “Never Can Say Goodbye” and the Son of Sondra Simon who sang back up for Gloria and was the lead singer of Simon Said, Nikko didn’t have to travel far to fall in love with music or get a music lesson. Nikko’s love of music was instant watching his family sing while he learned to play various instruments, but his love of hip hop came from his favorite emcee “Nas”. Nas’ influence on Nikko was dramatic. Before long Nikko would start writing his own story and rhymes , his mother Sondra then began to give him song-writing lessons with homework that needed to be completed to move on to something new. On this edition of Parallax Views, we welcome a guest that has an inside track within the beltway. Namely, Ret. Col. Lawrence B. Wilkerson. For the unfamiliar, Col. Wilkerson served as the Chief of Staff under Secretary of State Colin Powell during the George W. Bush administration. He also served 31 years in the U.S. army and teaches as an adjunct professor of government and public policy at the College of William & Mary. Since retiring from the military Wilkerson has been an outspoken critic of the Iraq War as well current U.S. foreign policy in other parts of the Middle East and around the world. Right now, he is working with the Transition Integrity Project, among other groups, to "War Game" possible scenarios in which the 2020 Presidential election doesn't end with a peaceful transition of power.Among the topics covered:- The Transition Integrity Project (TIP) and possible scenarios that could cause chaos in the immediate aftermath of the general election. Is Trump not allowing a peaceful transition of power just alarmism? What are the simulations, or what the press calls "War Games", done by the TIP and what insights can it give us about human decision making processes in relation to governance? - Col. Wilkerson mention Bill Barr's Christianity conservatism (or is it Christian Nationalism?) and groups like the conservative Catholic sect Opus Dei. What does it mean for U.S. governance? Thoughts on Steve Bannon, Hillsdale, and more - What is the relationship between the past and the Age of Trump present? What role do the Presidencies of Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, etc. have in laying the groundwork for the Donald Trump White House. Predatory capitalism and the endless war state. - What to make of foreign policy under Trump? What is the state of foreign policy in the U.S. and relations with North Korea, Iran, Russia, etc. The Trump administration's "Maximum Pressure" campaign on Iran and the fallout it will likely create in our relationship with Iran. The ruination of agreements under Trump, the Venezuelan regime change efforts, and Trump's threatening of Russia. - President Barack Obama's foreign policy, Col. Wilkerson's telling experience with Obama, Obama and his National Security Advisor Ben Rhodes vs. the Washington, D.C. foreign policy "Blob" and the "D.C. Playbook"; the foreign policy consensus within the beltway and its pro-war bias - What is the extent of foreign influence on U.S. foreign policy, for example Israel and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia? The strange alliance between Christian Zionists and Israel; the belief in end-times prophecy that drives Christian Zionists like Pastor John Hagee - The relationship between Iran and the U.S.; why can't the U.S. and Iran have a non-hostile relationship?; the role of the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and other countries in the hostile relationship between Iran and the U.S.; influencing buying and money; is their any possibility of a non-hostile relationship with Iran in the future after Trump's dismantling of the Iranian nuclear deal?; Wilkerson's view, based on experience, that Iran is extremely rational and willing to work out a decent relationship - The New Cold War with China? Nuclear weapons and China; we are at a moment where science can identify and fix our problems... but if we don't take that opportunity it may spell our peril. In about two weeks’ time on September 20th, the global sanctions on Iran – which was lifted five years ago and included an embargo on conventional arms - will snap back into force due to an American decision to veto any United Nations Security Council action to avoid it. This is the latest move in U.S. President Donald Trump’s so-called ‘Maximum Pressure Campaign’ against the Ayatollah regime in the Islamic Republic. In defiance of Washington’s move, Tehran unveiled domestically produced long range ballistic and cruise missiles while simultaneously seeking international support through striking a deal with the International Atomic Energy Agency. Will Porter returns to FPF to discuss Trump's maximum pressure policy against Iran and Venezuela. Will explains how the US seized four oil tankers that were carrying oil to Venezuela. Iran responded with a lack of concern saying the oil was no longer being carried by Iranian ships. At the UN, the US pressed for a resolution that would have extended the arms embargo against Iran. The resolution failed with only two votes, the US and the Dominican Republic. Even US allies - France, UK, and Germany - refused to vote for the US resolution. Iran remains at the center of U.S. decision makers attention in the Middle East as Tehran grapples with the effects of Washington’s “Maximum Pressure” campaign and the catastrophic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. Meanwhile Tehran continues its “Maximum Resistance” response through maritime provocations, space vehicle (potential ICBM) launches and backing Iraqi militias that are in conflict with U.S. forces. This Tennessee World Affairs Council Webinar is part of the “CxC Amplified: Ideas Summit – Putting the World Back Together Again” — a weeklong series of virtual events organized by the 90+ councils of the World Affairs Councils of America.
The targeted killing of General Qassim Suleimani sent shockwaves around the world and sparked staunch debate about the Trump administration's "maximum pressure" campaign. Supporters argue that this strategy, which includes leaving the JCPOA and imposing harsh economic sanctions, will safeguard American interests, quell Tehran's human rights abuses, and halt the state's support of terrorist networks. But opponents see "maximum pressure" as dangerously misguided. They argue that abandoning the hard-fought JCPOA and undermining the Iranian economy has promoted violence, isolated allies, and fueled anti-American sentiment. Recovering from a ransomware attack isn't like paying your electric bill; there's no guarantee that the lights suddenly come back on. How, then, should organizations like municipalities and hospitals plan to remediate in the case of a ransomware attack — or better yet, take preventative security measures? Matthew DeFir and Robert Gates, both members of the IBM X-Force IRIS team, share their advice on how organizations can prevent ransomware attacks. They discuss why attackers choose moments when they can apply maximum pressure, the importance of backing up systems, insights into taxpayers' views on ransomware, and why organizations should not pay the ransom. Plus, Pam and David discuss how ransomware has impacted the cities they live in. For more security stories, visit SecurityIntelligence.com or follow IBM Security on Twitter and LinkedIn.

More than a year after US President Donald Trump withdrew from the multilateral Iran nuclear deal, the Opec member's oil exports have hit historic lows. Official crude sales have slumped below 200,000 barrels per day from above 2 million b/d in the first half of 2018, as the country's traditional customers have largely stopped lifting to abide with US sanctions, piling more pressure on Tehran at a time when tensions with Washington are escalating. The US has blamed tanker attacks near the Strait of Hormuz on the Islamic republic and is upping the ante after Iran downed a US spy drone that Tehran says entered its airspace, raising the prospect of direct military conflict. For now, Trump has said he prefers ratcheting up economic pressure on Tehran over a military strike, slapping new sanctions on the country, including on the supreme leader. With oil exports at historic lows and its economy reeling, Iran's back is against the wall. Hosted by: Amena Bakr, Senior Energy Correspondent and Oliver Klaus, Dubai Bureau Chief
Iran is the subject of our 142nd episode. Former U.S. Ambassador Ryan Crocker served in the Middle East for much of his career, representing the U.S. in Iraq, Syria, Kuwait and Lebanon. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In this conversation, we explore President Trump’s decision to pull back on a planned military strike, what a proportionate response to Iran shooting down an American drone would be, whether reopening negotiations is a worthy strategic goal, how the US can restore deterrence, whether the ‘Maximum Pressure’ campaign is working, how our allies in the region may be viewing this, what the chances of war are, and what it was like to be stationed in Iran in 1972.

South Korean president Moon Jae-in announced Friday evening that, together with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un, North and South Korea will work towards a formal end to the Korean War by the end of 2018. The two countries will also work together on the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula. The announcement sent ripples of hope and suspicion across the globe. North Korea has a track record of promising peace only to later continue business as usual. Gordon Chang, a Daily Beast columnist and author of “Nuclear Showdown: North Korea Takes On The World”, thinks the new push for peace talks may be an attempt by Kim Jong-un to divide the U.S. and South Korea. Chang joins Rick and guest co-host Matt Mackowiak to lay out his concerns and suspicions as we witness the historic summit between the North and South Korean leaders. Mark McKinnon, executive producer and co-host of Showtime’s “The Circus” talks about documenting “the wildest political show on earth.”
