A revealing account of National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster's turbulent and consequential thirteen months in the Trump White House. At War with Ourselves is the story of helping a disruptive President drive necessary shifts in U.S. foreign policy at a critical moment in history. McMaster entered an administration beset by conflict and the hyper partisanship of American politics. With the candor of a soldier and the perspective of a historian, McMaster rises above the fray to lay bare the good, the bad, and the ugly of Trump's presidency and give readers insight into what a second Trump term would look like. While all administrations are subject to backstabbing and infighting, some of Trump's more unscrupulous political advisors were determined to undermine McMaster and others to advance their narrow agendas. McMaster writes candidly about Cabinet officials who, deeply disturbed by Trump's language and behavior, prioritized controlling the President over collaborating to provide the President with options. McMaster offers a frank and fresh assessment of the achievements and failures of his tenure as National Security Advisor and the challenging task of maintaining one's bearings and focus on the mission in a hectic and malicious environment. Determined to transcend the war within the administration and focus on national security priorities, McMaster forged coalitions in Washington and internationally to help Trump advance U.S. interests. Trump's character and personality helped him make tough decisions, but sometimes prevented him from sticking to them. McMaster adroitly assesses the record of Trump's presidency in comparison to the Obama and Biden administrations. With the 2024 election on the horizon, At War with Ourselves highlights the crucial importance of competence in foreign policy, and makes plain the need for leaders who possess the character and intellect to guide the United States in a tumultuous world.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

SERIES 3 EPISODE 17: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: Trump is now claiming that the White House rigged the presidential election in 2020. HE was president in 2020. HE was in the White House. "Zuckerberg admits the White House pushed to suppress Hunter Biden laptop story, in other words the 2020 presidential election was rigged," Trump writes. I'm telling you: Mijni-strokes. SPEAKING OF WHICH: There's way more to Trump exploiting Arlington National Cemetery on Monday to take smiling thumbs-up selfies while literally standing on the graves of American heroes. An Arlington official tried to stop the photography; a Trumpist allegedly shoved him; the Trump Campaign decided the correct response was to claim the Arlington official was "suffering from a mental health episode."  JACK SMITH OUTWITS THE SUPREME COURT: This one weird trick actually works. He filed his superseding indictment in the Insurrection case in Washington. It's a little more complicated than this, but basically he got around SCOTUS by changing every reference to "President Trump" to "Candidate Trump" and calling the 1/6 Call To Arms a "campaign speech." RAGE IN THE MACHINE: Thousands of newspaper columns were deleted (hundreds at The New York Times alone) when Kamala Harris agreed to her first sit-down interview. It's with Dana Bash on CNN so she still hasn't scheduled one anybody will SEE. The Cook Political Report has moved two more states from "Lean Democrat" to "Likely" and moved North Carolina from "Lean Republican" to "Toss-up." Maybe that's why Trump has agreed to the September 10th debate - or seemed to. The actual words in his acceptance never says he'll actually be there. And we have the first polling on weirdness by party and while the GOP is accurately seen as more weird, the lead is hardly big enough. B-Block (23:55) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: RW troll blasts Democrats for "not being interested" in the Trump assassination attempt. Turns out all the Democrats on the House committee went to the site survey Monday. Only three of the seven Republicans bothered to. Trump makes the list too after what HR McMaster revealed about the Taliban Trump ordered released. And somebody who made this list in 2007 for indiscretions as a tv reporter is back for mocking Gus Walz while not merely a right wing media nut but also the volleyball coach at a high school with a praised and cherished program for learning-challenged kids. C-Block (33:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: 43 years ago now, my television career starts because the late Lou Dobbs had issues keeping his pants on. It's still amazing.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Got to check in with my buddy Keith McCants, Bryan County Democratic Party chair, to see how excited folks in South Georgia are that VP Kamala Harris and Gov. Tim Walz will be doing a two-day barnstorming bus tour. We discussed Walz' appeal to rural voters and what "black jobs" appear to be to Donald Trump and more. Speaking of Cadet Bone Spurs, reaction was salty, swift and angry from many, upon seeing him commemorate the three-year mark of the Abbey Gate suicide bombing ... at Arlington National Cemetery at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Gross enough the man sought to politicize the tragedy (why else would he be there on that day?), add to it his culpability that not enough folks are pointing to. His former national security advisor HR McMaster, however, did connect the dots on CNN last night. Not short on reasons to be repulsed by "the Don," the Seneca Project released a new ad rallying female voters with a long list of reasons to rebuke a second Trump term. Lastly, VP Harris' campaign dropped a new ad, themselves, outlining her housing initiatives. Long overdue - and I've some ideas how she can make them come to fruition.

The stakes of this war are already high for Ukraine, but they are made exponentially higher – for countries across the globe – because of the looming danger of nuclear war.  Today, three star Lieutenant General HR McMaster returns to Honestly to talk about the chance of nuclear escalation, what plans our military has in place in the case of a nuclear attack on Ukraine, what a realistic end to the war might look like, how concessions will only embolden Putin, and why McMaster believes America needs to remain actively invested in this war until Putin is finally convinced that he has been defeated. May 14, 2021: Fully Vaccinated Americans May Go Maskless; Hidden Camera Sting Targeted FBI; GOP States Slash Jobless Benefits

AM Quickie

Play Episode Listen Later May 14, 2021 8:09

Welcome to Majority.FM's AM QUICKIE! Brought to you by justcoffee.coop TODAY'S HEADLINES: If you’re fully vaccinated against the coronavirus, the US government says you no longer need to wear a face mask in most places. That’s great news for about one-third of the population, but everyone else still needs to hurry up and get the shot. Meanwhile, a new investigation reveals that Project Veritas ran a secret campaign to discredit Donald Trump’s imagined enemies inside the government. With the help of a former British spy, it even targeted FBI agents for hidden camera sting operations. And lastly, nearly two million Americans in sixteen Republican-ruled states are facing imminent cuts to their jobless benefits. This is what they consider good government: making people suffer for no good reason. THESE ARE THE STORIES YOU NEED TO KNOW: This cause for celebration comes from the Washington Post. Americans who are fully vaccinated can go without masks or physical distancing in most cases, even when they are indoors or in large groups, federal officials said yesterday. The announcement paves the way for a full reopening of society. Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said, "We have all longed for this moment when we can get back to some sense of normalcy. Based on the continuing downward trajectory of cases, the scientific data on the performance of our vaccines and our understanding of how the virus spreads, that moment has come for those who are fully vaccinated." More than one hundred and fifty four million Americans have had at least one shot and one hundred and seventeen million are fully vaccinated, about thirty five percent of the population. The Post says Walensky cited a growing body of real-world evidence demonstrating the efficacy of the coronavirus vaccines. She noted the shots offer protection even against more contagious variants circulating in the United States. The relaxation of masking does not apply to airplanes, buses, trains and other public transportation, to healthcare settings, or where state or local restrictions still require them. Officials also noted that some business settings may require masks, especially since some workers remain unvaccinated. Walensky urged those who are immune-compromised to speak with their doctors before giving up their masks. For everyone else, enjoy feeling the air on your face. Hidden Camera Sting Targeted FBI This dive into conservative skullduggery comes from the New York Times. A network of conservative activists, aided by a British former spy, mounted a campaign during the Trump administration to discredit perceived enemies of Donald Trump inside the government, according to documents and people involved in the operations. The campaign included a planned sting operation against Trump’s national security adviser at the time, HR McMaster, and secret surveillance operations against FBI employees, aimed at exposing anti-Trump sentiment in the bureau’s ranks. The operations against the FBI, run by the conservative group Project Veritas, were conducted from a large home in the Georgetown section of Washington that rented for $10,000 per month. Female undercover operatives arranged dates with the FBI employees with the aim of secretly recording them making disparaging comments about Trump. Central to the effort, according to the Times, was Richard Seddon, a former undercover British spy. Seddon was recruited in 2016 by the security contractor Erik Prince to train Project Veritas operatives to infiltrate trade unions, Democratic congressional campaigns and other targets. The scheme against McMaster was one of the most brazen operations of the campaign. It involved a plan to hire a woman armed with a hidden camera to capture McMaster making inappropriate remarks that his opponents could use as leverage to get him ousted as national security adviser. He eventually resigned anyway to avoid being fired by Trump. Which suggests this Project Veritas campaign was yet another bottomless pit for conservative donors’ money. GOP States Slash Jobless Benefits Republican cruelty is also bottomless. The Washington Post reports that more than one point nine million Americans in Alabama, Mississippi and fourteen other Republican-led states are set to have their unemployment checks slashed starting in June, as GOP governors seek to restrict jobless assistance in an effort to force more people to return to work. The cuts are likely to fall hardest on roughly one point four million people who benefit from stimulus programs that Congress adopted at the height of the coronavirus pandemic, including one targeting those who either are self-employed or work on behalf of gig-economy companies such as Uber. Beginning next month, many of these workers are likely to receive no aid at all. According to the Post, the looming cliff reflects an emerging campaign on the part of GOP leaders to combat what they consider a national worker shortage. Arizona and Ohio became the latest states yesterday to announce plans to scale back benefits out of a belief that the federal payments have deterred people from returning to their old positions. The reality is more complicated. The slowdown in hiring may instead reflect workers’ concern about their safety and difficulty obtaining child care, or their trouble finding suitable positions in hard-hit industries on top of mounting frustration about wages they consider too low. That means the loss of unemployment benefits over the next month threatens to inflict new financial harm on those who say they’re already struggling. Our sympathy to all those affected in red states. AND NOW FOR SOME QUICKER QUICKIES: The Associated Press reports that Hamas sent a barrage of rockets into Israel yesterday as Israel pounded Gaza with more airstrikes and shells and called up nine thousand reservists who could be used to stage a ground invasion. And Reuters reports that individuals involved in the new eruption of Israeli-Palestinian bloodshed may be targeted by an International Criminal Court investigation now under way. War criminals beware. According to Bloomberg News, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo this week set an audacious new benchmark in her campaign to reduce car use: a ban on most vehicle traffic crossing the city center. The plan would stop through traffic from a large zone covering Paris’ core, to cut pollution and noise and free up more space for trees, bicycles and pedestrians. Très magnifique! USA Today reports that a Marine Corps officer was arrested yesterday and charged with assaulting police officers at the January 6 attack on the Capitol. Major Christopher Warnagiris, forty, of Woodbridge, Virginia, is the first service member on active duty charged for his role in the deadly riot. Semper Fuggedaboutit! The Washington Post reports that Joel Greenberg, a Florida politician who is central to the investigation into Representative Matt Gaetz for possible sex trafficking of a minor, signaled yesterday that he will plead guilty in his own federal case. It’s a a troubling development for the congressman as it suggests prosecutors have secured a potentially important witness against him. Too bad for Gaetz that Trump pardon fell through. General HR McMaster who served as Mr Trump’s National Security Adviser until he was fired in 2018. In terms of America’s role in the world, will the Trump years be seen as an aberration or a marker of underlying change?

How to Handle a Mosul Victory?

Mid East Matters Online

After Mosul, Raqqa will fall surely and with it many other pockets of ISIS in Iraq and Syria. This is a blessed piece of good news for the Middle East region that has been under a black cloud of terror and horror since the city of Mosul was first invaded almost 3 years ago day-for-day, by the hordes of Islamic radicals brandishing their black flags and black beards and destroying all signs of civility and civilization in a war-torn Iraq. We will hear countless tails of heroism by the Shia militias and Iran for a battle that was truly won by the Iraqi Army, supported by US air and superior firepower, and assisted by the Kurds. But in the Middle East, like sometimes on Wall Street, those who rush to claim credit for a deal on which they have labored albeit marginally, tend to cling on to the idea, and spread it too, that they were the true fathers of such success. However, the ‘bonus pool' so to speak in 2017 Iraq might be differently allocated now that a Trump administration is in place, and with it, an assertive Iraqi Prime Minister who revels in an image of a national (not only Shia) leader, and who is not –so far- branded as an Iranian puppet. Let's hope he lasts that way. What may be different this time around from the disastrous and failed policies of the Obama admiration is the so-called gang of ‘adults' of the Trump administration. The new National Security Adviser Lt. Gen. HR McMaster has actually fought in Iraq and is an expert in counter-insurgency. He is also very wary of the expansionist drive of Iran in Middle Eastern affairs and especially in Iraq. In a WJS article, Lt. Gen. McMaster was critical of the roles of Russia and Iran. He is expected to be more surgical than tactical in his advice to the President on how to solidify the Iraqi Army, unify the country and tribal structures, and eliminate any loopholes that could give Iran a false sense of victory. Lt. Gen MacMaster, at a talk delivered at Policy Exchange earlier in the year, emphasized the ‘forward positioning of forces' because ‘deterrence by denial is what is effective'. Someone should translate that in Farsi ASAP. The Secretary of Defense John Mattis' animosity towards Iran is so intense that it led former Pres. Obama to replace him from Centcom. He is a Marine, and as it has been said in many circles, the US Marines are the closest thing to a military tribe. The Marines –and Mattis chief among them- holds a grudge against Iran since the bombing of the Marines' barracks in Beirut in 1983. In 2012, he repeated that the three greatest threats facing the US were ‘Iran, Iran, and Iran'. Quite an obsession some would say, others would argue for a legitimate enmity. Mattis has linked Iran to the rise of ISIS. “I consider ISIS nothing more than an excuse for Iran to continue its mischief,” he said. “Iran is not an enemy of ISIS; they have a lot to gain from the turmoil that ISIS creates.”  To make my point shorter and crispier when evoking the third adult in the current administration, Secretary Tillerson, when responding to a question from a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee about the U.S. position regarding regime change in Iran, said, “Our policy towards Iran is to push back on [its regional] hegemony, contain their ability to develop, obviously, nuclear weapons and to work towards support of those elements inside of Iran that would lead to a peaceful transition of that government.” Could such collective thinking  form the future US policy in the Middle East especially as it relates to ISIS and Iran? Time will tell, but one should remain hopeful that it will. Raqqa will fall next, and as a result, ISIS will be denied a physical territory of its own. That is ‘actual' ISIS whereas ‘virtual' ISIS, the one that lives in the hearts and minds of thousands of followers, those sleeper and non-sleeper cells, in the Middle East, Europe, North America, Asia and elsewhere, will unfortunately endure. To crush Radical Islamic Terrorism one needs to add...
