Denisse Oleas-Arancibia has not been in touch with her son and is worried something has happened. As her son reports her missing in Queens, where she lives, the front desk at the SoHo 54 Hotel on Watts Street is being asked to perform a wellness check on one of their guests. Despite a "do not disturb" sign on the door, a hotel employee entered the room and saw the 38-year-old Oleas-Arancibia lying covered with a blanket. She looked like she was resting so the employee quickly backed out of the room and reported to the front desk that the guest was sleeping. Police, following up on the missing person report filed by her son, end up at the SoHo 54 Hotel in Manhattan. It is around 10:30 a.m. when a maid enters the room and realizes that Denisse Oleas-Arancibia is not sleeping, but rather, the blanket has been used to cover the body of a woman who has been beaten to death. Police arrive at room 1190 on the 11th floor of the SoHo 54 Hotel and find a bloody crime scene with evidence left behind by the possible killer. The victim has been beaten and strangled, and there are fragments of plastic embedded in her head and an iron covered in blood next to her. Police catch a break when they find a pair of blood-soaked men's pants with a receipt. Police find surveillance video of the man in the leggings walking through the lobby and immediately begin their hunt. NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny says police have video of the woman arriving at the location wearing a distinct pair of leggings and later on a male, leaving the hotel wearing the same leggings. And of course, the male pants covered in blood left behind in the hotel room Investigators say they can track the suspect's movements through the victim's credit card and MetroCard the suspect allegedly stole and is using. As investigators are identifying their suspect in New York, Arizona Police have their hands full with a one-man crime wave. On February 17, in Phoenix, Arizona, an attempted carjacking and stabbing happen. The next morning, February 18 at 8:30 a.m. in Surprise Arizona, a man goes into a McDonald's women's restroom, crawls under a stall door, and threatens a McDonald's employee with a gun. She screams and he stabs her several times before fleeing the facility. Police arrive at the McDonalds in Surprise Arizona but the suspect has fled on foot. Employees get out a good description of the man and in a matter of minutes, someone matching his description steals a car. Surprise, Phoenix, and Scottsdale Police are all alerted and looking for the stolen car when the Scottsdale Police see the vehicle and get a good look at the suspect driving. He is pulled over and police take 26-year-old Raad Almansoori into custody. Get up and get informed! Here's all the local news you need to start your day: The NYPD says a man died after a detective threw a cooler at him as he was fleeing a drug bust on a scooter. Meanwhile, people on Roosevelt Island can now use OMNY instead of their Metrocard to ride the tram. In this episode, I share the three different ways that I was able to survive off of breaking. When you find something you love, and that's all you want to do, there's nothing wrong with monetizing a portion of it so that he can fund the passion of it. When I first started breaking, I was a teenager, and all I needed was to be able to get a MetroCard to go to practice, buy a turkey cheese, lettuce, tomato mayonnaise on a roll sandwich, and get into the jams. As I got older, and became a father with major responsibilities, and then had to expand my resources and figure out different ways to stay consistent with my income so that I can provide for my family without having to give up my dreams. So I utilize my skills and did what I had to do so that I can be the best father I can be while maintaining my aspirations and breaking in this podcast, I share the ins and outs, the ups and downs, along with some tips and tools that may help you in a similar situation. I hope you enjoy. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/bboygravity/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/bboygravity/support
When I ran my Metrocard through the turnstile, it came up Insufficient Funds and I frowned and looked around for the machines to fill it up. (I was not in my usual station so it wasn't immediately obvious.) As I walked away, I heard this police officer call me back. There'd been three of them lounging by the turnstiles and one of them had come forward and was offering to swipe me in. I was baffled but not about to argue. He told me to have a nice day and off I went, very confused. As I rode home, I tried to work out why this might have happened. It did not feel like he was hitting on me in any way, so it wasn't a pick-up move. Was it an attempt to rehabilitate the reputation of the NYPD with leftie radicals like myself? I didn't think so. I don't think the NYPD is at all worried about what we think of them. I'm pretty sure this guy doesn't know or care that I'm very interested in defunding the police. While the cemetery leadership later apologized, they still did not address how such a thing could happen. Szef MTA Janno Lieber, podczas spotkania z mediami lokalnymi, przedstawił plan powrotu metra nowojorskiego do pełnego funkcjonowania oraz powiedział o staraniach dokonywanych w celu polepszenia bezpieczeństwa w metrze.

For episode 84 and the first narrowcast of 2021, I'd like to take a few moments to discuss the SLEAZY SIDE of the streaming radio sector. To wit, the heavy-handed attempts of one disreputable label, Kindly Cock Records, to influence the programming of this show. Unlike most of you, I've got something called ETHICS -- not to be confused with a no longer in vogue skate shoe --- and it will take much, more than an all expenses paid junket* to see the Brooklyn Nets host a COVID-depleted Los Angeles Clippers lineup on New Year's Day to get me to play your latest (dubious) conceptual work. You can send me "TERRENCE MANN > JUWANNA MANN" texts all night long, IT'S NOT GONNA HAPPEN.* - MetroCard, bottled water, nosebleed seat

New York, New York, it's a hell of a baseball town where local Mets and Yankees fans ride in a hole in the ground (hopefully wearing masks while practicing social distancing). The subway system has run parallel with New York City's baseball history for well over a century. In fact, five score and sixteen years ago local fans via the city's new subway system begin commuting to the Polo Grounds and Washington Park in Brooklyn. Before long fans are third-railing their way to Ebbets Field and Yankee Stadium and Shea Stadium decades later. Today's commute to the new modern parks is no different. However, Major League Baseball is doing its damndest to impose change upon the game and its fans. This begs the question: is it worth swiping a MetroCard be it to River Avenue or Rosevelt Avenue in order to see a seven inning ballgame? This is sure to spark a rather intense debate on Sunday evening's 64th episode of a Metsian Podcast. Longtime friend of the show, The Coop is back! Together with Sam, Rich, and Mike, they'll recap the five game Subway Series that was between Bronx and Queens; opine on the latest ownership developments; tap into their respective inner GM as the trade deadline approaches and jump into the time machine back to the year 1964, and revisit players who've worn number sixty-four through Mets history. Tonight's show kicks off at 8:00pm (EST), sharp! You're more than welcome to call 646-787-1919 with your comments and opinions.

In our last episode of the decade, Jeffrey and Jarrett discuss the Dellin Betances signing and Wrestle Kingdom 14.
Host Emily Scott tries her hand at a one-woman holiday show! With the help of some absent regular contributors, she discusses the plan to expand NYC's "Fair Fares" discount MetroCard program, an Impeachment update, an agreement among colleges to allow increased competition for applicants, and some world/music news. She also presents a few pre-recorded pieces, including "At Night I Fly" and "Wild Bird Fund: Tour of NYC's only bird rehab facilities," both by Objection's very own Matthew Schneeman, and an excerpt from local activist show Mobilize.
Sharon and Sean tackle a trending topic in this episode - the New York Time's interactive digital post about the NYC subway map. Check it out for yourself here and see if your favorite parts of it align with Sharon & Sean's - https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/12/02/nyregion/nyc-subway-map.html The whole feature takes less than 10 minutes to get through, and it's guaranteed to be some of the best 10 minutes of your day (besides the minutes you spend listening to this episode, of course)! Before they dive into the NYT's super cool subway map feature, Sharon and Sean catch up on how they spent their Thanksgiving weekends, which of course mostly involves Sharon talking about hers. Sharon is justified in dominating this conversation as she watched the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade irl, and witnessed firsthand as Ronald McDonald wreaked havoc. She is also reminded of an illogical MetroCard quirk based on the experience of her international visitor, former Subway Sagas guest, Victorrrrria! (@victoriamartinezbarrera) During News of the Week, Sharon shares a New York Times article about a full Thanksgiving dinner on the L train, and Sean discusses a non-NYT article about the deal the MTA recently struck with its major union. Also, Sharon and Sean disagree about a nostalgic treat.

Last week, I started out with a quick measles update saying that the outbreak has mostly subsided, but I want to reiterate how important it is to get yourself and any young children vaccinated before the next outbreak begins. Israel-based Ynetnews revealed this week that a 43-year-old flight attendant who had contracted measles while working on the New York to Tel Aviv route for Israeli airline El Al died this week after a long hospital stay. Rotem Amitai was a mother of three who fell ill and was admitted to a hospital in Israel, where there has been a serious ongoing measles outbreak. She had only received one dose of the measles vaccination and was therefore still susceptible to the disease. In the United States, one does of vaccine is usually administered when a child turns one year old and a second is administered before the child enters school, and in city data, 46 of the total 653 measles cases in this year's outbreak were children or adults who had only received one does of the vaccine. El Al Airlines now requires all flight attendants to be vaccinated against the disease, and it's believed that people flying home from overseas trips and returning to communities in Williamsburg and upstate in Rockland County were the initial sources of New York's current measles outbreaks. 16 years ago on August 14, 2003 — A cascading power outage plunges millions into darkness across the northeast — What began as a damaged power line and a software malfunction in Ohio led to overloaded equipment throughout the interconnected power system stretching from Canada into the northeast United States. The power surge from Ohio triggered safety systems across the region, creating what is thought to have been the most widespread outage in both United States and Canadian history and the second-most-widespread in the world. It took around two days for all overloaded components to be checked and brought back online, with some smaller areas remaining without power for nearly a week. In New York, the city and most of the state were in the dark. Traffic lights were out and elevators and the subway were stopped, leaving many commuters in need of emergency evacuation and with no way to reach their homes as night began to fall. Some stayed in office buildings, on the floors of generous co-workers who lived nearby, or even slept outside, while others attempted to walk home or catch a ride on a bus or taxi, turning Manhattan's bridges into one-way exits. Update: The suspect was taken into custody around 1am on August 17th — Police are still looking for a possible suspect in Friday morning's bomb scare where two empty rice cookers were left in the Fulton Street subway station downtown. The proximity of the station to many government offices and the sheer number of commuters that pass through the station during morning rush hour, the area was quickly evacuated and subway lines were disrupted beginning around 7:30am. Police found the large silver rice cookers to be empty and deemed the situation safe, but a third, identical rice cooker was then found next to a city trash can in Chelsea at Seventh and 16th. The rice cookers were empty, and they may have been intended as hoax devices to cause disruption. Police released stills from security camera footage showing a white man in his 20s or 30s with dark, curly hair and a distinctive tattoo on his outer forearm, and described him as a person of interest. After seeing the security camera footage, a West Virginia man identified the person as his son, who may have recently been pan-handling in the city. No further info has been released and the police are still searching for the suspect as of this recording. Although the incident brings to mind the Chelsea pressure-cooker bombing of 2016, there have also been recent scares from abandoned rice cookers, one found in a suitcase in Midtown at a 6 Train station in 2017 and another in an F Train station on the Lower East Side in 2018. 42 years ago on August 22, 1977 — 19-year-old Richard Rodriguez from Staten Island sets a Guinness World Record for longest rollercoaster ride on the Coney Island Cyclone — His record time was 104 hours and 2,350 rides during the 50th anniversary of both the coaster and Charles Lindbergh's transatlantic flight. Rodriguez would break the record once again 40 years later on a UK coaster with a time of over 405 hours! Here's Rodriguez interviewed in the 1978 film 'Coney Island Cyclone' by Mike Edwards. OMNY, the MTA's new fare-collecting system, sees 1 million uses in just over two months — The new MetroCard replacement is only available at 16 subway stations along the 4/5/6 and on Staten Island buses, but the tap-and-go system reached the 1 million target four times faster than the MTA has predicted. To use the system, you wave a credit or debit card or a cellphone or watch above the glowing panel. The system aims to reduce the waste and complexity of issuing disposable MetroCards since the contactless system uses your payment method directly, just like at a cash register, although there will be a refillable OMNY card once the system expands, and the MetroCard is still scheduled to be used through 2023. According to the MTA, 80% of the OMNY swipes have used mobile wallets where people have added their payment cards to their phone, since very few credit or debit cards have the built-in technology, which is different from the chips that are now seen on some cards. We’ve analyzed New York City's top tourist passes to help you figure out which—if any—is right for you. You might just discover that the only NYC pass you need is a MetroCard for riding the subway.
OMNY arrives with a bang, as the MTA has rolled out its open-loop tap-and-go fare payment technology that will replace the MetroCard. But what exactly does this fare payment system of the future do? And when will New Yorkers get their unlimited OMNY passes? Al Putre, the executive director of the MTA's New Fare Payment Program, joins me to talk all things OMNY.
Kick It with Donna episode – 68 Ever wonder why you do things that make sense at the time and in hindsight make no sense at all? I’m sharing an experience today that helped me learn that I am not always right. Show Notes: Through the process of healing myself from the inside out, I am discovering parts of me that are not so pretty. It isn’t easy to look at myself and find truth in the ugly. However, I’m finding that it gets easier with more practice. How do I learn and grow unless I do the dirty work first? Three years ago, I took my son and his girlfriend to New York City for a week. We stayed in a boutique hotel not far from Times Square. Seeing the 9/11 Memorial Museum was very sobering. Most of the time we took Uber, but we did get a Metrocard to take the subway. How do you visit NYC and not get on the subway? I bought show tickets for Humans. My son was late (he’s always late) which made us all late to the show by 5 minutes. They would not let us in. This ruined the night. I came home from this trip annoyed and frustrated and shared that frustration with my daughter via text. I planned on talking to my son about it in my own time when the spirit moved me. After we returned, I took my son to Mattress Firm to buy him a new mattress. My daughter texted me and asked what I was doing. I told her. She couldn’t understand why I would buy my son something when I was pissed off at him. This made me angry because I felt it was none of her business. Truth be told, she called me out on my own shit and I was angry at her for it. This is what happens when I respond out of anger. Instead of looking inward, I lashed out at her. Why? I wasn’t willing or able to come down on my son for his shit. This is a long story for a podcast on another day. This anger at my daughter lasted for quite a while. It was a few months ago that I apologized to her for taking out my inability to deal with my son on her. She was very forgiving and appreciated that I came clean on this. I hope my honesty and forthcoming resonates with you in some way. We all have our shit that we throw on others because we don’t want to dig deep into ourselves and address a problem, The truth hurts. The only one who can fix you is YOU.

Emerging from glamorous Art Basel, where we rubbed shoulders with everyone from former Real Housewife Kelly Bensimon to grifting Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, we’re really struggling this week to acclimate to New York's rat and diarrhea-infested subway. In addition to demystifying Miami, on this week’s episode we shut down the hottest toy of the season, Poopsie, and explore the dystopian panopticon overseen by an Elf on the Shelf. Also: the Holland Tunnel struggles with a violent backlash to its holiday decorations; men embrace penis contouring; frenemies are orbiting and employees are ghosting. We respond to an #AskNope query about the merits of sharing business contacts with strangers and offer a hearty #Yup to incoming House Speaker/style icon Nancy Pelosi and a random straphanger who offered Brian a Metrocard. This year I the most grateful for all of the things I lost. I lost my favorite pair of socks in an AirBnB in Brooklyn that I spent 30-days living in because when it was time to pack up and leave, I forgot to grab them from the 8 layers of blankets that I used to keep me warm. I lost muscle on my arms because I traded in many workout sessions for nap sessions (this is something I don't regret). I lost my promise of always meeting deadlines because I never wrote the 50 pages of a new book I told my wonderful book agent I'd write by the end of October (this is something I DO regret). I lost a best friend of 7 years who one day, out of the blue, told me that she didn't want to be friends anymore. Her reason? I still do not know. I lost my temper a couple of times on the people I love the most because they said things that I knew to be true but didn't want to admit that because I'm inherently stubborn, and also, I like to learn things the hard ways (sorry mom). I lost my motivation, some days, to do much more than get out of bed, brush my teeth, and go through the motions of being a human. I lost my desire to care about the little things, like big bugs crawling in the apartment, or a mattress that was less comfortable than sleeping on the ground, or having only cold water in the shower, because living out of a suitcase, in a new home every 30-days, for over a year, breaks you down....in a really good way. I lost $25 at a casino in Colorado Springs, I lost 3 pairs of headphones, I lost a fully loaded MetroCard, I lost a few pounds, then gained them back, then lost them again, then...you get the hint. So why this year am I choosing to be thankful for all that I've lost? Because we all lose things in our lives and some are irreplaceable and other things are past-due to leave, and though we try to hold on and chase and feel resentment, we must move forward, we must eyeball all that we have and be grateful before it too is gone. Before we add it to our list, clean our hands of the past, and learn to inhale the future - even if's not what we imagined it would be. Ps. Happy THANKSGIVING.

Subway Sagas reaches a major milestone - double digits!! (Sorry for the spotty audio quality in this episode- we're not sure what happened but will fix moving forward!) In the 10th episode, Sharon and Sean discuss the MetroCard and its many foibles and nuances. Several loosely related tangents ensue. Also, Sean takes the ferry.

About the Episode Fake news is a dangerous construct. It allows people to quickly dismiss facts that don’t mesh with their worldview. Lee Caraher and Anne Green talk about why the truth matters, point out why you should stop using the term ‘fake news’ and argue that the stakes have never been higher to advocate for a communication platform that values ethics and facts. About Anne Anne Green is a 25-year veteran of the communications industry. She kicked off her PR career at Burson-Marsteller in the early 90s, and has been helping to lead and grow the wonderful team at CooperKatz since 1996. She's proud to have partnered with scores of dynamic clients over the years - from her early days on GE and DuPont, to more recent engagements with Memorial Sloan Kettering, Fiserv and Coldwell Banker Real Estate. Just two of her career highlights include unveiling MetroCard for the NYC MTA and launching Virgin Mobile in the U.S. - with the added plus of engaging directly with Sir Richard Branson. In addition to overseeing the agency's strategic direction, growth and operations, Anne serves as a senior counselor to many CooperKatz clients. She is deep into digital and loves the highly-integrated nature of PR work today. And she's a seasoned media and presentation skills coach with a passion for executive training. Anne serves on the board of directors of the PR Council and has collected some nice industry accolades along the way (though that "40 Under 40" seems like a while ago now!). In her personal life, she's a singer married to a drummer and is good at steadily over-committing herself to many great organizations. Key Takeaways The idea of “fake news” has become weaponized. We have responsibilities and values we need to uphold as an industry. The press is not only essential to our jobs as PR professionals, but essential to our society. Have open, intentional, consistent discussions about ethics. Social media is just like every other human institution - it is the best of us, it is the worst of us. It is our job as PR professions to see how it is being used and misused, and what we can do to make it a more communicative platform.
Mike and Charles are back in their command seats with a big bag of brickbats to deliver to all and sundry, from bad headline writers, to stock pundits, to phone sellers, and beyond. The tour of the tech news galaxy starts with the big story of the week -- the launch of the iPhone X and all the usual hysteria that accompanies that, along with news that the iPhone 8 is actually selling just fine (and a theory about why we were told otherwise last week), and a warning about buying your iPhone from Best Buy. Also discussed are Apple's new leather sleeve for the MacBook, a new rant from Mike about entitled Mac owners, balanced with some good news for Mac owners -- new super-fast SSD expansion options from OWC. Also covered in this episode: the latest legal wranglings, from the University of Wisconsin to a re-re-retrial of patent damages from the first Apple vs. Samsung trial (yes, eight years on); the FBI being whiny babies; Apple's smackdown of the "Face ID accuracy reduced" lie; Microsoft kills off the Kinect, and Google needs to work on its QA; and the Amazon CloudCam and (the ill-thought-out) Key idea. The return of the Lightning Round sees more insight on the Cochlear Nucleus 7 hearing implant, Walmart becoming more friendly to Apple products in their IT, Honda's new CarPlay-compatible Gold Wing motorcycle, and news that NYC is replacing the Metrocard with contactless payment systems at last. Last but not least, Mike and Charles take a closer look at insurer John Hancock's offer for a cheap Apple Watch ... and what's behind that. All this and more, cadets, so make sure you have your truth detectors tucked into your utility belts -- the space junk is thick on this orbit!
I hate how society demands how "ME" I have to be. You want "ME?" Cut me in front of a Metrocard machine, yo. It's a twice-a-year thang to get a Metrocard. And I understand panhandling. I get you ain't got cash on hand. I see your failed credit card interaction. Does that give you a ticket to both Metrocard machines without me losing my cool. Yes! Yes, it does. I will play it cool because fucking white people give enough a bad name to this America so like, "I'll forever exisist humanity's jackass." Keep talking, Clifford. This is juxtaposition of the flagrant. Now leave. Shivering. A naturally evolving country of white people left to where they have always belonged: underground in a segment we like to call, "Please, Pretend We Never Happened. Thanks! Kay." Ohhh, if y'all just knew how much I wanted to completely rip apart my body and watch it put itself back together in the pain of frustration. Emotional status on a physical node. Saying I used to scratch Nike symbols into my skin as a kid. Saying anything at all in belief of faith. Humanity crumbling into a dimensional internet that was always fucking here; and I'm the fool: because I really am. Look at me [refer to the above picture]. People not really liking anything but themselves inside on a nice day binging everything they can consume in one heaping pile of trash bags that're memories bestowed upon an afterlife nobody will ever fucking care about because the memory of YOU is worth a fucking wooden nickel with a buffalo on it that's been a burger since 1956, digested into shit, sewage, and is now soil for a money-tree in some region of West China that only dynasty family may enter. Hi ppl! We're back together. Again. And because tomorrow is the last day of this year (am I alone in asserting that even though we're all here and alive as evidenced by my writing this and your reading this and therefore truly in no position to complain, some drastic element of the year fucking sucked?), here is an episode about resolutions, not to be confused with goals. Things covered in the episode include: +The fact that this was recorded while I was sitting in the passenger seat of a rental car in Los Angeles +Why following a somewhat tumultuous but overall subservient relationship with resolutions, I don't want to make them anymore +The one time I kept a resolution (hold on to the same Metrocard for one whole year), how it made me feel (fine), and see previous bullet point +My control issues (I'm so vain) +Grief (which is seemingly the only thing I can talk about these days) +Letting go (another theme you might be tired of hearing about) +Abie +How relieving and gratifying it feels to say to yourself, "I think I was an okay human in 2016, so I'm just going to continue on that path in 2017." Take a listen, let me know what you think, and down here by the ~*~girltalk~*~ station that is our comment feed, tell me if you're making a resolution. What is it? If you're not, why not? For what it's worth, you were an okay human in 2016, so if you decide that you're just going to continue to maintain the status quo in 2017, that's completely and utterly fine by me. Self-improvement is great, but being proud of who you are right now -- flaws, hang ups, curious tendencies and all -- that's fucking awesome. A Way with Words — language, linguistics, and callers from all over
It's a brand-new season of A Way with Words! Grant has big news, too: He's used up his last Metrocard, packed up his belongings, and moved to the Left Coast. He reports on some features of California language there that are already catching his ear. Also in this episode, what's the real meaning of decimate? Is it related to beta as in 'beta-testing software'?The word decimate has a grisly etymology. It derives from a Latin military term meaning 'to execute every tenth man in an army unit'--the penalty for a failed mutiny. As a result, some sticklers insist that the English word decimate should be used only to indicate 'destroying a fraction of something' rather than 'destroy completely' or 'utterly wipe out.' She wonders if she's been saying it wrong all these years. There's a new Facebook group called People for a Library-Themed Ben & Jerry's Flavor. They say that libraries are awesome, B&J ice cream is tasty, so why not combine the two and convince Ben & Jerry's to produce a new flavor with a library theme?
