Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Your Cheerful Price, published by Eliezer Yudkowsky on the LessWrong. There's a concept I draw on often in social interactions. I've been calling it the "happy price", but that is originally terminology by Michael Ellsberg with subtly different implications. So I now fork off the term "cheerful price", and specialize it anew. Earlier Facebook discussion here. Tl;dr: When I ask you for your Cheerful Price for doing something, I'm asking you for the price that: Gives you a cheerful feeling about the transaction; Makes you feel energized about doing the thing; Doesn't generate an ouch feeling to be associated with me; Means I'm not expending social capital or friendship capital to make the thing happen; Doesn't require the executive part of you, that knows you need money in the long-term, to shout down and override other parts of you. The Cheerful Price is not: A "fair" price; The price you would pay somebody else to do similar work; The lowest price such that you'd feel sad about learning the transaction was canceled; The price that you'd charge a non-friend, though this is a good thing to check (see below); A price you're willing to repeat for future transactions, though this is a good thing to check (see below); The bare minimum amount of money such that you feel cheerful. It should include some safety margin to account for fluctuating feelings. The point of a Cheerful Price, from my perspective as somebody who's usually the one trying to emit money, is that: It lets me avoid the nightmare of accidentally inflicting small ouches on people; It lets me avoid the nightmare of spending social capital while having no idea how much I'm spending; It lets me feel good instead of bad about asking other people to do things. Warnings: Not everybody was raised with an attitude of "money is the unit of caring and the medium of cooperation" towards exchanges with an overt financial element. Some people may just not have a monetary price for some things, such that the exchange would boost rather than hurt their friendship, and their feelings too are valid. Not as valid as mine, of course, but still valid. "I don't have a cheerful price for that, would you like a non-cheerful price" is a valid response. Any time you ask somebody for a Cheerful Price, you are implicitly promising not to hold any price they name against them, even if it's a billion dollars. If Tell Culture doesn't work for someone, Cheerful Prices may not work for them either. If a friend didn't already ask for your cheerful price, it may be good to explicitly tell them when you're naming your cheerful price rather than your minimum price. Life does not promise us that we will always get our Cheerful Prices, even from our friends. Q: Why is my Cheerful Price not the same as the minimum price that would make me prefer doing the transaction to not doing it? If, on net, I'd rather do something than not do it, and I get to do it, shouldn't I feel cheerful about that? As an oversimplified model, imagine that your mind consists of a bunch of oft-conflicting desires, plus a magic executive whose job it is to decide what to do in the end. This magic executive also better understands concepts like "hyperbolic discounting" that the wordless voices don't understand as well. Now suppose that I don't want to hurt you even a little; and that I live in terror of accidentally overdrawing on other people's senses of friendship or obligation towards me; and that I worry about generating small ouches that your mind will thereafter associate with me. In this case I do not want to offer you the minimum price such that your executive part, which knows you need money in the long-term, would forcibly override your inner voices that don't understand hyperbolic discounting, and force them to accept the offer. Those parts of you may then feel b...

If you assume, as I do, that sex work is legitimate work that should be destigmatized, then ideally it would be something that adults in the worker's family can discuss openly, honestly, and respectfully. Unfortunately, due to criminalization and stigmatization, that is far from standard in most families. Sex workers often report that one of the most difficult things about sex work is the need to hide it (and lie about to to keep it hidden) from family members; this “double life” can lead to a terrible feeling of isolation. For these reasons, I'm moved by the love and acceptance my friend and creative collaborator Ckiara Rose has been able to find with her mother and her son. Ckiara, 50, has done almost every kind of sex work since she started stripping at age 19, including escorting, brothel work in Nevada, and porn; she now focuses on sensual massage and professional Dominance. Ckiara's mother, Reverend Josephenie Robertson, 76, is an elder from the Miskitu people of Central America. Ckiara's son Saycsar Fleurima, 27, is a filmmaker. They work together as a family on activism for the human rights of Miskitos; Ckiara uses much of her funds from sex work to support her indigenous activism. To my knowledge, this is the first time an out sex worker has been interviewed alongside both her parent and her adult child. Josephenie is a devout Christian, and as she explains in this interview, had a difficult time coming to terms with her daughter's chosen profession. However, as is evident from the tenderness and humor in the interview, Josephenie has come to acceptance and love for Ckiara and her chosen life path—the same love and acceptance Sayscar has always felt for his mother and her work. The full video interview is being shared exclusively with the Daily Beast. What kinds of legal discrimination do people in the kink/BDSM community still face? Is BDSM between consenting adults still considered illegal in any US jurisdictions? What kinds of legal discrimination do people in the polyamory and swinging community still face? How likely are people to lose jobs if it comes out that they practice an alternative sexual lifestyle? Child custody Are people into alternative sexual lifestyles still routinely pathologized by psychotherapists? What has been your recent experience with anti-BDSM feminists? Do they still come after you with the same tired arguments against BDSM from the 70s and 80s? Do you think some of the strategies you've successfully used to decriminalize BDSM could also be used to decriminalize sex work between consenting adults? #055: Seduction, Porn, Deida, Consent & More w/ Guest Michael Ellsberg   Among many other topics, Michael Ellsberg and I explore: --> The problems with the pickup movement, which was (unfortunately) the place a lot of men went for "guidance" on how to relate to women. --> The ups and downs of the "conscious sexuality" movement, which has also been a place many men have sought guidance--though is starting to feel dated to a lot of people.   --> How David Deida's "The Way of the Superior Man" (published 20 years ago) influenced the (mostly white) American personal development culture, and why it's time to move beyond it.   --> How ingrained homophobia in our society limits men's range of expressiveness, and how to move beyond these limitations towards a fuller and richer life, even for those of us who are straight.   --> Why it's crucial that even "masculine" men embrace and explore our own inner feminine sides. (And what do these terms even mean anymore?)   --> Why any man identifies as masculine must come to his own definition of this term, rather than following pre-conceived scripts--and how to find our own natural definition and ideal.   --> How to navigate the perilous balancing act between many women's desire for a man to lead the romantic interactions between them and be the "pursuer," versus men's newly increased sensitivity towards not overstepping boundaries or being imposing. (This is so important and SO many guys are tripped up about this now.)   --> The why and how of allowing erotic interactions with women to evolve organically, while still feeling empowered to express our desires and intentions clearly.   --> This is a juicy one: Michael and I debate on the merits of "affirmative consent."   --> The two types of responses men have had to #MeToo--one really constructive, one really destructive. (And how to embrace the former.)   --> And Michael Ellsberg's favorite topic--p*rn. Michael is someone who creates Indy p*rn, whereas in my practice, I have seen many of the compulsive and negative ways men can relate to porn--so we hash out our differences here in this lively segment.     Michael Ellsberg is the co-author of "The Last Safe Investment: Spending Now to Increase Your True Wealth Forever" (Penguin, 2016), and the author of "The Education of Millionaires: Everything You Won't Learn in College about How to Be Successful" (Penguin, 2011), and "The Power of Eye Contact: Your Secret for Success in Business, Love and Life" (HarperCollins, 2010). In this episode, Michael Ellsberg interviewed Michaela for his podcast recently: "I've interviewed famous billionaires. I've interviewed rock stars. I've interviewed NYT-bestselling authors. And yet, of all the interviews I've done, the one I'm most excited about is the one I'm sharing with you now. Michaela Boehm is in my opinion the most advanced, master teacher on sacred sexuality currently teaching. For 13 years, she traveled and co-taught with David Deida, author of "The Way of the Superior Man." Now she has branched out to share her own unique blend of wisdom, synthesized from her 22 years of counseling practice, along with her training and experience as a lineage holder in a tantric tradition of Kashmiri Shivaism. Her private clients include Oscar-winning actors, producers, writers, and multiple Grammy-winning musicians--and now she's sharing her wisdom with us. As I love to do, in this interview we dove right into the nitty-gritty: The Dark Side of "Conscious Sexuality." I'm a student of conscious sexuality---but every scene and every philosophy has its own shadow side. What is the shadow side of the "sacred sexuality" scene? In this wide-ranging, no-holds-barred interview, we dive into the conversations no one else is having, and the things no one else is saying, around this controversial topic." Some of the topics we cover include: 2:30 - The true meaning of the "shadow side"- as opposed to how it is usually used in personal development circles 6:55 - Why "sacred sexuality" should not be used as a tool for healing 12:46 - The most important factor for healing old sexual wounding 23:00 - How so much spiritual practice ends up being a futile quest to gain love or approval from "daddy" or "mommy" in our minds - and what to focus on instead 26:11 - How so many teachers or "gurus" of spirituality and sexuality use scarcity and subtle shaming to keep students hooked on constant upsells. 29:40 - Why the focus on "commitments" and "accountability" in Men's Groups is misguided and ineffective, and what Men's Groups should be focusing on instead 37:25 - How Women's Groups often end up perpetuating the same shaming of women that the women are going into the groups to avoid, and what--in Michaela's opinion--Women's Groups should be focusing on instead 40:08 - The rise of the "Stepford Dakinis" 42:33 - Many women ask "Where are all the good men?" - and why asking this question is barking up the wrong tree. (The discussion we get into for the next 15 minutes is hands-down the most controversial segment of an interview I've ever done, watch out!) 57:36 - How can independent, strong-minded women (who are into men) find the man they want? 1:01:47 - How can a woman who wants the experience of surrender with a man, decide which man she can trust? 1:09:55 - How polyamory often bogs down and leads to "a lot more discussing than fucking" 1:16:03 - Why the tantra worlds and BDSM/kink worlds often judge each other, and how they can be integrated 1:22:15 - The single best first step for opening to the divine in sexuality ... Today on Trend Following Radio Michael Covel interviews Michael Ellsberg. Michael is an American author, blogger and public speaker. Michael Covel and Michael Ellsberg met for the first time in Napa Valley at a Tim Ferris conference. Today they talk about Michael’s newest work, “The Last Safe Investment: Spending Now to Increase Your True Wealth Forever.” The book is about making money, being an entrepreneur, and giving insights that can applied today. The two start off talking about entrepreneurism and dive deep into how people think about money. Michael, and his co-author Bryan Franklin, wanted to completely rewrite the script for how people think about making and spending money. Michael says the bottom line is to try and make your life as awesome as possible in every aspect. Most people want money for one reason or another. He has found that the three most popular reasons people want money is: happiness, freedom, and security. Michael always wanted to be a writer growing up. He used his savings to help pay his way to become a writer. Most save their money and figure that what they love can come later when they have enough saved up. The question is, “When do you want to start your passion?” When you retire? Or do you want to invest in those things you are passionate about now?Michael E. then goes into how important the presence of meaningful friends are, otherwise known as your “tribe.” He says that it is important to travel and figure out where you want to settle down and live. When you nail that down you can start investing in learning about the place, people that live there and invest your time in making friends. Traveling and learning where you want to settle down has a lot to do with gaining critical self knowledge which, according to Michael E., is the greatest investment a person could make. When you are self aware you get far more happiness out of the money and time you invest in things. You aren’t wasting as much time and money experimenting, trying to figure out what you like.Next, Michael E. answers the question, “What is the difference between a market skill and a super skill?” A market skill is any skill that you can sell directly, such as plumbing or marketing. Super skills are skills that can be taken across any job platform and are essential in any marketplace regardless of economic circumstances. Michael E. categorizes them into four categories: interpersonal, creative, technical and physical super skills. Different skills have different levels of entry. Public speaking is one super skill that they go into depth about. Michael E. says that if you learn how to speak publicly even semi well, you will be far above the rest of your competition. One of the last topics discussed are the areas in your life that create happiness. Relationships, health and money are the three big contributors to happiness. Each time you spend money you should look at how that purchase will impact every area in your life. If you go to buy a meal you should look at how that will affect your health and if that bleeds into happiness in your relationships. Michael has found that all of these things are interconnected. When you look at things as a whole, spending money can be looked at as investing rather than spending frivolously. In this episode of Trend Following Radio: Super skill vs. Market skill Systemic spending Cultivating meaningful relationships Thinking three dimensional Creating happiness in your life

Our system of education is built on the belief that learning is best achieved by bringing the best of the past forward through expert advice and clear example. Consequently, educators rise through the ranks like officers in the military: through compliance and conformity to the norm. But in this era of quantum change, are we really best served by imitating the past?  Let's look at two characteristics the innovative leaders of today all seem to have in common:   1. They tend to be college dropouts. Steve Jobs of Apple, Bill Gates and Paul Allen of Microsoft, Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams and Biz Stone of Twitter, Mark Zuckerberg, Dustin Moskovitz and Sean Parker of Facebook. Dropouts, all. The list goes on and on.   2. They have no fear of failure. Innovative leaders experiment constantly because they see failure as an unavoidable step toward success. These leaders know the truth about failure; it's an extremely temporary condition, a fleeting moment, nothing to be feared. Failure is motion and motion is life. Educators hesitate to experiment because they fear failure and reprimand. Consequently, the average teacher with 20 years' experience really has just 1 year's experience 20 times. In the October 22 issue of the New York Times, researcher Michael Ellsberg wrote, “Entrepreneurs must embrace failure. I spent the last two years interviewing college dropouts who went on to become millionaires and billionaires. All spoke passionately about the importance of their business failures in leading them to success. Our education system encourages students to play it safe and retreat at the first sign of failure… Certainly, if you want to become a doctor, lawyer or engineer, then you must go to college. But, beyond regulated fields like these, the focus on higher education… is profoundly misguided.”   Pennie had a fantastic idea while we were taking our morning walk. As she explained it to me, I realized her plan would make solid education more widely available, more relevant to the student and save a great deal of money as well. “Princess,” I said, “if someone isn't already doing this, they will be soon. This is the right idea at the right time so it's highly likely that lots of people are having this same idea right now.” I was right. Salman Kahn (pictured above,) already has the project well underway. Pennie's idea – and Kahn's – is to harness Youtube to deliver 10-to-12-minute tutorials in an effort to fill the painful gaps in public education. Stanford University professor Philip Zimbardo recently said, “There is a disaster recipe developing among boys in America dropping out of high school and college. And it's not simply poor performance. One of the problems is, a recent study shows, that by the time a boy is 21, he has spent at least 10,000 hours playing video games by himself, alone… They live in a world they create. They're playing Warcraft and these other games which are exciting… Their brains are being digitally rewired, which means they will never fit in a traditional classroom, which is analog. Somebody talks at you without even nice pictures. Meaning it's boring. You control nothing. You sit there passively. Disaster.  These kids will never fit into that. They have to be in a situation where they are controlling something. And school is set up where you control nothing.”  Video allows the world's best teachers to be everywhere simultaneously. And if you eliminate the time spent for roll call, bad behavior, discipline, silent reading and working on exercises, there's rarely more than 10 minutes of real teaching delivered during the average class-hour. Tightly scripted 10-minute videos allow the quicker students to move at 5 to 6 times their current pace while slower students are free to pause and rewind as often as they feel necessary....
