Dr. Michael Hirsch is a Professor of Sociology and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Houston, Towson University in Austin, and Mr. Quincy Dunlap, President, and CEO of Austin area Urban League. In this episode Dr. Gaye Lang, Dr. Hirsch, and Mr. Dunlap discuss: Inequities within our justice system. The positivity and diversity of peaceful protest and demonstration. National symbols and how they are used negatively. Investing in diversity, equity, and inclusion through sustained effort. Key Takeaways: We need to look to and put pressure on our elected officials to make it their responsibility to work to resolve this problem within our country. It's important to support businesses and people who make it a point to bring inclusivity and equity. We must start by challenging smaller inaccuracies, “attack the untruths,” and prove that they are false then keep moving up through the larger inaccuracies. “Before we can look at anything else we need to look at our own self deficiencies in this space of healing.” - Mr. Dunlap Connect with Dr. Michael Hirsch: Website: https://htu.edu/faculty-directory/dr-michael-hirsch LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-hirsch-a35a337/ Connect with Quincy Dunlap: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/quincy-dunlap8a8a1960/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/quetothepoint?lang=en Austin Area Urban League: https://aaul.org/ Connect with Dr. Gaye Lang: Don't forget to subscribe to the show, so that you don't miss a single episode; and please leave a rating and review.
This week, we are so excited to introduce you to the amazing Michael Hirsch and the incredible organization he runs in Oklahoma called Loveworks. We know that Michael is amazing and Loveworks is incredible because we actually flew to Oklahoma a few months ago to meet Michael and visit the summer leadership camp that was in session at Loveworks, which coincidentally is also called Dream Big. Michael had discovered the Dream Big Podcast, and was kind enough to invite Eva to be the keynote speaker at the leadership camp. This was Eva’s first experience speaking on stage, and Michael and his team could not have been more gracious. Listen to this engaging interview to learn more about Michael, Loveworks, and Eva’s experience speaking at the summer leadership camp. For our show notes, visit DreamBigPodcast.com/148

Akustisch.

Vitale poses that question vividly in his The End of Policing: Are the police guarantors of social peace or its disruptors? Is the force’s mandate to serve the public equally and fairly, or to act as social-control agents, protecting property and its few owners at the expense of the many?
